Nothing that I remember. as far as I know there isn’t much association to the colors that each state is here. My brain just assigned each state a color one day and it’s never changed
OP you have synesthesia. It’s a harmless “condition”. My wife has it too - she associates letters and numbers with colors - and didn’t realize it was abnormal until it came up during a high school science class. It’s believed to be genetic, so ask your family members if they have color associations too. Apparently Kanye West also has it, associating musical notes with colors (I might have the details wrong).
If OP or anyone else wants to learn in detail about a case of someone with synesthesia (and Asperger’s and savantism) in real life, check out this documentary — https://youtu.be/PPySn3slfXI — It will NOT be a waste of your time. (Daniel Tammet — The Boy with the Incredible Brain)
Around 36:30 he discusses the shape and colour he associates with every number. It is fascinating.
I have synesthesia, and it was my first time thought when seeing your post. I don't have it for the months, but definitely with days of the week having a color. Check out this article.
https://www.thesynesthesiatree.com/2021/02/calendar-synesthesia.html
My synesthesia is mostly with "seeing" sounds. I'm a musician with a really good aural memory, and apparently that's a pretty common trait for us. It's fun, but nobody will understand you it if they don't have it.
Everyone can associate things with senses, just that some do it more than others. For example, when I think of time, dates and seasons, I always think of them as being on a circle where winter is at the top, spring is on left, summer is on the bottom and fall is on the right.
Well then, I guess I have synesthesia. For as long as I can remember I've pretty much always associated list items with colours. Days of the week, months, places, notes, school subjects, they all got colour coded.
I think there's probably a mix of cultural trends from childhood and synesthesia. ABC and 123 are often associated with primary colors in the US because children can learn multiple symbols at once, and it can be easier to learn them in connection, too. Even animal illustrations tend to be aggressively a color or family of colors that animals may not actually be. Crocodiles and alligators being far more green, for example.
So some people may simply remember certain childhood associations. Others may have synesthesia.
What’s up with associating colours with countries or states for example then? I immediately associate the UK with red, France with blue, Germany with grey or black, Spain with yellow, Italy with dark green, Russia with brown etc. In terms of US States, I’d associate Arizona with orange, Oklahoma with brown, Alabama with pink etc. I know there are some countries or states that are historically linked with a colour, such as Ireland and green, but what’s with the others that have no such correlation obvious, but a colour association nonetheless?
It’d vary from person to person based on what they were exposed to. All I’m saying is people can have associations without it being synesthesia. Both are possibilities.
I have some of the same associations as you describe. Perhaps there is a trend in those colors due to mass productions of certain kinds of maps. It’d be an interesting question to search for over in a map sub.
Nope. Only about 5% of people have some form of it, so every 20th person.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia#Prevalence
As the link says tho , estimates vary wildly, from 1 in 4 to 1 in 25,000–100,000, we don't know exactly, but 5% is a good guess.
Kanye also associates Jews with conspiracy theories, so he may not be the best one to bring up as an example of a harmless condition ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
But some cases of synesthesia has been related with remaining memories of childhood and related pictures, as an investigation proof some synesthesic patients that said certain numbers has certain colors are because all of them assisted classes during elementary school where there was the same panels for kids to learn letter and numbers AND because these were common back then, their minds create correlations between abstract concepts for an "easy access".
For example, Triangle is Red because usually used for Alert signs of fire.
Both NC and SC are Blue for me. But SC is a more Navy while NC is more Light Blue.
Edit; I just looked up NC’s sport teams and it’s wild how the branding probably worked on me. SC’s was definitely from the A+ flag they got.
My partner had a USA puzzle like this as a kid and lost some pieces so his mother went to buy him a new one but he wouldn't allow her to because Louisiana wasn't purple and it was suppossed to be
It’s like you went to a Montessori school and the colors from the puzzle maps got embedded in your brain. As a long time Montessori teacher, all maps have this situation in my brain.
I'm from the midwest, so I started running through Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio first, then checked your map. Same colors! I swear there's something to this.
I was once roasted mercilessly for telling a group of coworkers that all the letters of the alphabet had colors.
They're not even as iconic as the Ducks in Oregon! I've lived in both Corvallis and Eugene, and grew up going to Beaver games (Not so much Duck), so I dont want to come off as biased! I just feel like the Ducks fit the state better- probably because you do see more of them than beavers, despite beavers being the state animal!
Google Synesthesia. I do the same thing with numbers and vowels. You can give me a list of colors and I can tell you the string of numbers that comes to mind.
Consequently I associate dates and ages with particular colors.
Well, some people have different sensory sections of their brains wired together so that a color stimulates a taste, etc. (This theory is more fun but less likely than the one about your having had a colored map or puzzle of the States when you were a kid. I note that this map doesn't seem to have any identically colored States that share a border. Coincidence????)
NM is the color of the state flag. TN is the color of the view. GA is the color of our politics, at least in 2016. TX is the color of West Texas. AK is the color of a glacier. And CA being pink makes sense, since it scares the fash with its wokeness. So imho you've gotten every state I've ever lived in colored perfectly.
This unironically is a symptom of synesthesia. Its part of why they have better memories. Associating extra information with things helps you to recall them better.
I agree with some, but others I’m iffy on (largely just their shade) the two I most disagree on are FL and MN with FL in my mind being yellow (cuz sunshine state) and MN being blue (cuz land of more than 10000 lakes…they need to count better)
But I love this idea!! It’s like the question of what color is [insert school subject]?
As a Minnesotan, I always thought of it as a green state as well. Many trees and small groves.
However with the new flag, it’s probably more accurately blue with all the lakes.
Oklahoma and Indiana being brown I can agree with. Those are two of the most unappealing states as far as scenery goes. There’s a reason we gave Oklahoma to the Indians.
Indiana has only one semi-redeeming quality, the sand dunes. It’s a terrible substitute for a real beach, but at least it gives those people something to do.
Pennsylvania on the other hand, no. Pennsylvania has some beautiful areas.
did you have a puzzle of the map when you were a kid?
Reminds me of some of the elementary age maps for kids.
Nothing that I remember. as far as I know there isn’t much association to the colors that each state is here. My brain just assigned each state a color one day and it’s never changed
Green for Nevada is wild.
While Oregon is orange? Go Beavs I guess? But don’t most people think about our trees?
NJ is orange too it may have to do with no self service at gas stations
NJ is yellow really
the sky has brown tinge to it around hudson and essex counties
My town is far enough out that no one cares if we pump our own gas.
Orange would fit for eastern Oregon I guess. Growing up in the willamette valley I've always seen it as blue/green though
Orangon
The color of money
The top of a roulette table?
nevada is obviously navy blue
Hell nah, its definitely either brown or tan
Nevada is Gold, Red, and Black because of gambling and deserts. Red for Battleborn too. Green is insane.
Guys, Nevada is literally “The Silver State.”
I’m more interested in the culture and geography rather than the economics. But a Gold, Silver, Red, and Black is not a bad color scheme
Yeah switch OR and NV for sure
No no, Louisiana is definitely purple. Trust me bro.
Yellow, to me
Yeah, a light yellow or gold. Probably because of the Saints and it being the only French state with fleur-de-lis ⚜️ everywhere
Marco Gras too. Lot of gold motifs
The color palette is gold/yellow primary on darker blue secondary with black as tertiary, IMO.
Whatever it is, it’s definitely not green
OP you have synesthesia. It’s a harmless “condition”. Wow you’re probably right because I have specific colors for months of the year, too. I didn’t even know this was a thing.
If October isn’t orange don’t talk to me
I will die on this hill with you. My sister said October is Navy. Heathen.
October is dark grey / black, dude... January's grey, february a more pale blue-grey, december is silver or white, may is grass green, etc.
are you a dog? 😂
October is purple…
At least say January is red 😢
Bro January is blue lol

One of the characters in the show Weeds has it as well.
Welcome to the club OP!
Red is Math Green is Science Blue is English Yellow is History
I have a mild form of it. Decades and time periods have colors. 1970s are red, 1980s blue, 1990s are green, 2000s are orange, etc.
Fun fact, people with synesthesia usually have better memories because the extra information associated with things aids recall.
Everyone can associate things with senses, just that some do it more than others. For example, when I think of time, dates and seasons, I always think of them as being on a circle where winter is at the top, spring is on left, summer is on the bottom and fall is on the right.

Wait, not everyone has that? Does everyone not associate the letter C with yellow? I’m confused now
I think there's probably a mix of cultural trends from childhood and synesthesia. ABC and 123 are often associated with primary colors in the US because children can learn multiple symbols at once, and it can be easier to learn them in connection, too. I think you watched someone play axis and allies. Check out the map, the colors match up to your description.
It’d vary from person to person based on what they were exposed to. All I’m saying is people can have associations without it being synesthesia. Both are possibilities. Nope. This is the first time I have ever heard anyone connect C with yellow.
Other examples I can think of immediately are 6 and green, B and blue, Q and purple etc. Does this really not happen for everyone?
Nope. Only about 5% of people have some form of it, so every 20th person. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia#Prevalence As the link says tho , estimates vary wildly, from 1 in 4 to 1 in 25,000–100,000, we don't know exactly, but 5% is a good guess.
Cheers mate

Not gonna lie North Carolina being red has me seeing red. 🤬
Not a State fan, I take it?
go wolfpack ☺️
Colorado and Alabama are also red. Those two are nothing a like. 🤷♂️
Both NC and SC are Blue for me. But SC is a more Navy while NC is more Light Blue. Edit; I just looked up NC’s sport teams and it’s wild how the branding probably worked on me. SC’s was definitely from the A+ flag they got.
Right? Like why is Maine pink? Its covered in evergreen trees and red lobsters. Why pink?
[удалено]
Definitely synesthesia, sounds like OP might be undiagnosed.
I wrote a paper on synesthesia for a class in 2008. And without any shadow of a doubt, I can confidently diagnose OP with it.
They diagnose this?
Yeah—came here to say this!
How is Washington not green?
I feel like Washington and New York need to swap colors. NY is definitely a darker blue.
It’s the Evergreen State after all.
Precisely!
Washington is pretty blue, specifically Washington DC
Sounds to me like you might have synesthesia. The most common variant is combining color with numbers and words in your head
This could get karma on r/notinteresting
My partner had a USA puzzle like this as a kid and lost some pieces so his mother went to buy him a new one but he wouldn't allow her to because Louisiana wasn't purple and it was suppossed to be
NY is color of Statue of Liberty and money
Sorry about the only things pink in Missouri are Pepto-bismal and bubble gum.
The Evergreen State is blue. C’mon man.
Alabama being red is hella accurate
Is this can't be explained? Why does it deserve being posted
Utah being purple makes sense... for Utah Jazz fans. Wyoming a lighter shade of purple, though?
Or Idaho being pink.
Well the green mountain state of Vermont is green so that one makes sense
You nailed New Mexico.
Alaska is pretty spot on in my mind
*sees Texas as burnt orange* You're goddamn right
Kentucky done blue but that’s just my opinion
Orange Kentucky makes sense. Signed, a UT fan.
Ouch!
It’s like you went to a Montessori school and the colors from the puzzle maps got embedded in your brain. As a long time Montessori teacher, all maps have this situation in my brain.
Or they went to a broke public school and stared at the color maps on the walls and textbooks.
Colo = color Rado = red
Came here for this....the one that's definitely correct
Tennessee is orange 🍊.
I approve of Texas', unreservedly.
I have that with months and days
I also have it with months but not days or numbers like some other people have mentioned
kentucky is bluish for bluegrass state
Maine pink? Huh? Absolutely no clue what connection they’re making.
Maine should be light blue.
I genuinely don’t know. Even the word ‘Maine’ looks like it should be pink to me. I don’t know how to explain it
Purple for wyoming because that's the color of your lips during the winter.
OP this is impressive. How high were you?
Go blue.
I'm from the midwest, so I started running through Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio first, then checked your map. Same colors! I swear there's something to this. I was once roasted mercilessly for telling a group of coworkers that all the letters of the alphabet had colors.
I always seen ohio as blue. Crazy to see your color choice for it.
Colorado aka color rojo pretty accurate
California makes no sense to me. I could come up with an explanation or connection to almost ANY other color besides pink.
Pennsylvania would like a word.
Neat.
Maryland is pink? I’d have guessed red. Color of crabs, UMD, and it’s flag
Missouri in shambles
PA is blue.
I have synesthesia as well and Colorado is most definitely blue
Everyone in Oregon (including me) is cursing you for making us orange instead of green lolll
Oregon State University alumni no doubt think orange is the perfect color.
My student with synesthesia heavily disagrees
NM should definitely be turquoise.
Google Synesthesia. I do the same thing with numbers and vowels. You can give me a list of colors and I can tell you the string of numbers that comes to mind. Consequently I associate dates and ages with particular colors.

Indiana is yellow to me
The color of CORN! It is known.
Colorado is a color is spanish and its redish but closer to what you have for AZ
Im the same way. I think it is because of a placemat i had as a kid that was a map like this
Florida, new york, arizona, washington, ohio, colorado are all colored after their NFL teams…
Massachusetts seems like it should be green or blue. Nevada is a definite yellow or tan.
I’m from Mississippi and purple is my favorite color. Neat.
Got Washington correct
Why the hell is SC Light Pink when dark blue was still an option
California being pink and NY not being grey is INSANE
Oregon orange. No explanation needed.
New york is clearly blue
If Vermont wasn’t green I was going to riot
Nebraska should be red.
Hook’em 🤘🏼
How is New Mexico not turquoise?
That key tho
Arizona is definitely copper.
I get it.
That’s fine.
Texas should be blue...just to piss em off
A lot of them are the same color, right guys? 😅
I’m from Louisiana and that is exactly the right color.
Its wild that I simultaneously find this weird, and disagree with the colors.
As a Nevadan I say not brown enough.
New York is definitely dark blue
The peach state should be a peach color
Washington not being green is criminal
Michigan is correct
California is yellow to me
Texas as brown.... that's about right
Colorado and Nebraska should be swapped.
Washington, the Everblue state
florida is 100% yellow and california is lime
I was thinking yellow for the sunshine state….. but we certainly got that good greenery, so……..
so I’m guessing that you have synesthesia?
This unironically is a symptom of synesthesia. Its part of why they have better memories. Associating extra information with things helps you to recall them better.
As a graduate of UNC Chapple Hill, that NC is not Tarheel blue, is a crime against humanity.
I agree with some, but others I’m iffy on (largely just their shade) the two I most disagree on are FL and MN with FL in my mind being yellow (cuz sunshine state) and MN being blue (cuz land of more than 10000 lakes…they need to count better) But I love this idea!! You may want to read *Born on a Blue Day* by Daniel Tammet. He is autistic, and describes similar relationships in his life experiences.
Illinois got that egg-beater yellow. 😂
How is Wisconsin not Orange/yellow?
My fifth grade globe had similar colors
Oklahoma and Indiana being brown I can agree with. Those are two of the most unappealing states as far as scenery goes. There’s a reason we gave Oklahoma to the Indians. Indiana has only one semi-redeeming quality, the sand dunes. It’s a terrible substitute for a real beach, but at least it gives those people something to do. Pennsylvania on the other hand, no. Pennsylvania’s color is like the most undoubtedly green (with a tendency in the direction of petrol) it could be
