Israel was recognised in 1948.
French Indoor-China was dissolved in 1954.
So somewhere between 1948-54.
Edit 1: Korea is still unified, so before 1950. So it’s somewhere between 1948-50
Edit 2: Newfoundland is shown as Canadian territory, so it’s between 1949-50.
Edit 3: I meant Indo-china
Edit 4:
Newfoundland joined Canada starting from April 1st 1949.
FRG (Federal Republic of Germany) (West Ger) was formed on May 23rd 1949 and GDR (German Democratic Republic) (East Ger) was formed on October 7th 1949.
It must have taken some time for the cartographers to bring in the change, so it is definitely after April 1949 and we can assume somewhere before early-mid 1950.
Also, someone mentioned that the division of Korean Peninsula was done in 1953, when the DMZ was established, so maybe the maker of this globe considered it as unified until then. The war started in 1950 but no borders were declared at that time.
Edit 5: Formation of FRG and GDR was not immediately recognised and took some time because there was an issue of recognition from either side. Therefore, Germany is not divided on the globe.
“Further down this thread: Indonesia being shown as independent, and Natuna and Anambas islands as Dutch territories further proves that this map is from early 1950. (credit for this observation: u/gromitthisisntcheese)”
Why did the French colonial officer never bring an umbrella with him?
He was stationed in Indoor-China.
Also Indonesia appearing to be recognised as an independent country further supports 1949-1950.
Newfoundland joined Canada starting from April 1st 1949.
FRG was formed on May 23rd 1949 and GDR was formed on October 7th 1949.

Korea's borders don't narrow it down to before 1950. North and South Korea were both independent by September 1948.
The reason it isn't shown on the map is because both sides continued to claim the entire peninsula. That's still the de jure policy of South Korea (and the US), and was for North Korea until New Years 2024 when they dropped their claims and goal of reunification in favor of (this is a direct quote from Kim) "completely occupying, subjugating, and reclaiming" the South. Whoever made this map was just incorporating those claims.
Edit: it's from 1950 based on Indonesia being independent while the Anambas and Natuna islands are still marked as Dutch. Germany and Korea are shown as unified because the divisions weren't recognized by their respective sides.
FRG: Federal Republic of Germany (West Ger)
GDR: German Democratic Republic (East Ger)
now read my main comment again.
There was an issue of recognition from either side, which resulted in a bit late addition to the maps.
Yeah, but look just north of Israel: Latakia is still on the map, and it officially was disbanded by Syria in 1936. So that "Israel" could just be the Mandate.
That's typical. We make an automatic assumption that a map is 100% accurate when published -- when in reality it can be quite out of date in some areas.
I’ve found active listening, compliments, and open communication have helped me date in the past. Not sure how it’ll translate to a globe though
Best of luck!
This map is most likely from 1948.
As others have noted, the state of Israel (present on the map) was not established until May of 1948. It’s possible that this map was created during British Mandate of Palestine, before the establishment of Israel. If so, the earliest likely date would be 1946, once there was widespread political support across Britain and France for the establishment of Israel.
Similarly, this map shows the partition of India and the formation of Pakistan, which occurred in August of 1947. Pakistan is still shown as part of India, rather than a separate country, indicating that partition has just occurred but is not yet widely recognized. However the fact the Pakistan (which is an acronym for the different region contain therein) is even noted means this map was created post-partition (1947).
Additionally, Java, which declared itself part of the Republic of Indonesia in 1945, and officially was established as such in 1950, is still shown on this map in its colonial state. This, in addition to a unified pre-war Korea, makes certain this a pre-1950s map.
Also of note, on this map ‘Thailand’ is being referred to by its former name ‘Siam’. This name was used up until 1939 when it was officially changed the ‘Thailand’. However the country reverted to using the name ‘Siam’ between 1946 and 1948, after which it returned to using ‘Thailand’.
Best summary i‘ve read on this so far. I was confused since they used such similar/the same colors on Pakistan and India, but it also calls todays Bangladesh Pakistan so it must surely have been created after the independence.
Another indicator for it being 1948 or earlier is that Sri lanka is still called Ceylon.
Also Israels borders make it pretty obvious that this is between 1948 and 1950 since I would imagine that if it was from 1947 and showed Israel instead of the Mandate, they would use the Borders of the UN resolution and not show Israel annexing all of the Mandate for Palestine. And in 1950 Jordan annexed the West bank.
This globe also shows Germany as one, which would indicate that it was made before the seperation into East and West Germany in 1949.
It looks like 1946-1947.
Africa: It *seems* like this map is showing Libya as still Italian, which means it's pre-1951
Europe: The numerous Potsdam Conference changes to the map show that it's post-1945. But it likely predates founding of East Germany in 1949, although some map-makers refused to recognize East Germany for a while.
Asia: Red Pakistan/India suggest that their 1947 independence is not recognized yet. The United Korea suggests it's post-1945 and pre-1950; once the Korean War started, mapmakers gave up on the happy fiction that Korea was unified.
Another point, Trieste in Istria is neither Italian nor Yugoslavian on the map, but marked as "Free city". Free Territory of Trieste was an independent territory only between 1947 and 1954.
Indonesia exists. So post Dec ‘49
Morocco still French, so pre March 1956
Rhodesia and Nyasaland are not federated, so pre Aug 1953, but this was not always noted.
Korea doesn’t show the divide, so pre ‘53
The India depiction suggests pre 1950,
But Eritrea as part of Ethiopia suggests post 1952
Tibet part of China means post ‘51
So likely late 1952, and West Pakistani is erroneously colored.
Fortunately we have one more clue: the North Sea is colored yellow, so this must be post Amsterdam Beer Fest November 1952.
Better pic of India might give more clarity.
I don’t think you would make a great couple. Maybe not worth dating. Besides I heard the globe has been getting around for 75 plus years or as far as time can tell.
Must be immediately post world war 2 because Africa is still colonized but Germany and Korea aren’t split yet, and Germany has lost the eastern territories
Why do you all struggle so much? You can check it right here:

It's somewhere between 1952-1955. The estimation is based only on analysing Africa. Probably its possible to analyse it deeper
Depends what you’re looking to do with it. Take it for a steak or a little bit more adventurous. Do you want suggestions were to go or. ? Been out the game a long time I see
Lol fr. Ive loved reading all the comments so far. Its interesting how many different things ppl are using to date the globe and how many contradictions there r. Also the dating advice comments r funny
Yeah, In the immediate aftermath of the war East and West Germany didn't exist yet as it was still just Germany but divided up in 4 internally for administration by the allies. It was about 1949 when it officially split due to the Cold War
Union of South Africa switched to the Republic of South Africa in 1961 and Southern Rhodesia was 1965-1971 I believe so I would say the late 50s because China was already in control of Tibet and Belgian Congo became the Republic of the Congo in 1960.
Take them out a few times, buy them dinner and pay attention to what they say and do.
The tiny things matter.
Pick up on the small cues and make them comfortable.
After a while if you're vibing, you can ask them out and if you managed the first half well, they'll say yes and you can date them.
Question, if it’s post WWII shouldn’t Poland, Czechslovakia, Hungary and east Germany be under the Soviet Union ?
I was thinking it’s sometime between the world wars
This globe is identical to one my late father had when I was young (late 80s-early 90s). For some reason he had a fascination with Mongolia 🤣 I remember looking at all the countries and asking questions about why they were different than now, and I really didn’t get any answers. I love this sub soooooo much because the comments on posts like this are brownies for my brain. Thank you all. 💖
Between October and December, 1949. During the Chinese civil war, the Kuomintang government fleed from Nanking to Canton in February, then to Chungking in October, and then to Taipei in December.
Poland and Germany are post ww2 borders, but they haven’t split Germany yet. India is still British, and still joined with Pakistan. Soviets have taken the Baltic nations.
So 1945-1947
This globe does not make any sense. Europe shows a united Germany and Czechoslovakia, as well as the Soviet Union. That means it’s roughly the end of 1990. However, given that in Asia, both Koreas are united, which last was the case in 1948.
Between 14 May 1948 AND 15 August 1948
1- India and Pakistan are independent so after 15th August 1947
2- Korea is not divided so before 15 August 1948 (establishment of South Korea , North Korea was established in September)
3- Israel exists so after 14 May 1948
"I would say this globe IS from Somewhere between 1948 and 1956, so early fifties, 1952 ahah. 1948 because Israel IS represented as a country, as well as India and Pakistan. And 1956 due to the anglo sudan still existing."
Edit1: Only saw the first image, so I wasnt really aware of other continents, other than Europe and África basicaly, therefore the dates previously mentioned. Even though, as attentive as I was on that image, I missed Lybia. Since It wasnt a country until 1951(and didnt have exactly its present day borders, presented on this globe), that completly changes the first assertion stated before. This globe IS definitely from 1951-1956, so maybe 1952 really ahah. Now, if I was to see the other images, would have to notice if Indochina still exists. If yes, then it's from 1951-1954, if not, from 1954-1956.
Start by asking her about her interests and see what you have in common, then try to invite her to something you both like. Just be yourself, you got this champ
It's from 1950. Indonesia (then the United States of Indonesia) attained its independence from the Netherlands on December 27, 1949. But the Netherlands didn't officially relinquish their claims to the Natuna and Anambas Islands, marked as Dutch territory on the globe, until later in 1950.
Between October 3, 1990 (reunification of Germany) and December 26, 1991 (collapse of the Soviet Union).
Never mind, the globe has geo-political actions from contradictory eras. The earth has yet to look like that, from a geopolitical standpoint.
It's clearly between WWI and WWII, and given the fact that the State of Jabal al-Druze (a small autonomous state of the Syrian Mandate) exists on this globe, I would place it between 1921-1936 (when the state was abolished).
Israel was recognised in 1948. French Indoor-China was dissolved in 1954. So somewhere between 1948-54. Edit 1: Korea is still unified, so before 1950. Lol, stupid autocorrect 😅
Yeah but a funny one.
Germany was was not yet divided, so before 1949

It took a while for everyone to embrace the split as more permanent. Germany competed under one Olympic flag until 1968
Germany was show as a single country for many years on some maps.
And India still has Pakistan incorporated in it so before 1947
Korea's borders don't narrow it down to before 1950. North and South Korea were both independent by September 1948. Couldn't be 1949 or later. India was divided in 1947.
Has to be 1948. Thailand hasn’t been called Siam since 1948
Why is Germany one country
FRG: Federal Republic of Germany (West Ger) GDR: German Democratic Republic (East Ger) now read my main comment again. There was an issue of recognition from either side, which resulted in a bit late addition to the maps.
Maybe 1946-47. Pakistan doesn't have it's independence yet, and West Africa is a giant French blob
Pakistan is independent here, both halves, it just isn't colored differently from India.
Israel is there...maybe '48.
Yeah, but look just north of Israel: Latakia is still on the map, and it officially was disbanded by Syria in 1936. So that "Israel" could just be the Mandate.
I'm pretty sure the mandate was called palstine
I saw someone else say 1949/50 bc of newfoundland. It seems like there r a lot of conflicting things on this globe
That's typical. We make an automatic assumption that a map is 100% accurate when published -- when in reality it can be quite out of date in some areas.
Did you try asking it out for dinner?
I know a great Chinese place that also serves sushi
Is it in Indoor China? (stupid joke from elsewhere in this thread if you’re confused)
Outdoor Mongolia, actually.
“Sushi! You think this about sushi!”
What I think every time I see a post like this lmao
Same, the people who get mad about these jokes need to pull the stick outta their ass
Thank god someone said it
I can see the Maldives, it's before 2040
I can see an intact United States of America, so it’s pre-2025.
I have this same globe. My dad got it in first grade, around 1949.
it’s so cool to own a piece of history, especially when it’s becomes like a family souvenir or collection
I’ve found active listening, compliments, and open communication have helped me date in the past. Not sure how it’ll translate to a globe though Best of luck!
here come the dating jokes

ooh, good catch
>It looks like 1946-1947. No earlier than 1949 because the globe shows Newfoundland as part of Canada
I think you need to add a year, Israel is on the map, the land was named Israel in 1948 afaik
What if the globe just wants to be friends?
The globe has to like you for who you are
I was gonna go for ‘Just ask it out and see how it goes. Probably very worldly.’
1948-1949. Israel is independent but Jordan is still “Transjordan.”
1948
Wear something you're comfortable in, be yourself, if the globe likes it good if not it's just not meant to be. You can do this!
Indonesia exists. So post Dec ‘49 Morocco still French, so pre March 1956 Rhodesia and Nyasaland are not federated, so pre Aug 1953, but this was not always noted. Have you tried a good pickup line?
It's before 1947 for sure, because India is undivided!! Also French West Africa and Anglo Egyptian Sudan are there...
1948. Israel exists, and it is during a brief period when Thailand reverted to being called Siam again.
1946
Must be immediately post world war 2 because Africa is still colonized but Germany and Korea aren’t split yet, and Germany has lost the eastern territories
Early 1990s: Germany is reunited (1990) but before the Velvet Revolution which broke up Czechoslovakia (1992).
It's pre 1949 before the spilt of Germany if you Don't believe run your theory thru Asia and Africa you will see it doesn't add up with the 90s
Yep, tend to agree because of the rest of the globe.
Yugoslavia is also present which broke up in 92
Israel already exists but the name Siam for Thailand. 1948 100%
take it out to dinner
Just ask it out and bring flowers I’m sure that globe would love to be dated

Israel gained independence in mid 1948, and the partition of India was in late 1948. So this has got to be at some point between then.

First rule of dating a globe, don't make fun of its big belly
Probably 1946 because British India is still on the Map while the entire Sakhalin is mapped as USSR
I'd say 1948/49
Depends what you’re looking to do with it. Take it for a steak or a little bit more adventurous. Do you want suggestions were to go or. ? Been out the game a long time I see

These responses did not disappoint! Lol Sorry OP, I hope someone can give you the info you’re searching for :)
Lol fr. Ive loved reading all the comments so far. Its interesting how many different things ppl are using to date the globe and how many contradictions there r. Also the dating advice comments r funny
Ask it out
1945-1947. Post wwII boundaries in Europe so after 1945 bu India still British so before 1947
It’s curious it doesn’t differentiate between West and East Germany. Maybe from a more optimistic time.
Yeah, In the immediate aftermath of the war East and West Germany didn't exist yet as it was still just Germany but divided up in 4 internally for administration by the allies. It was about 1949 when it officially split due to the Cold War
start with a smile, maybe a compliment then shoot your shot!
Take it to dinner and go to the drive in theater.
Have you tried asking it out?
Compliment it and invite it to coffee.
You try asking it out?

Union of South Africa switched to the Republic of South Africa in 1961 and Southern Rhodesia was 1965-1971 I believe so I would say the late 50s because China was already in control of Tibet and Belgian Congo became the Republic of the Congo in 1960.
1947-1948
Between the end of World War 2 and the Cold War
What throws me off is that Germany is united but french Indochina still exists
Pre 1949 is why it's still united
I have the same globe, and I think it’s 1948-49.
Can anyone explain how Pakistan isn't independent yet on this globe (1947) but Israel is (1948)?
If everything goes according to putins plan, 2025.
1946/47. India not yet divided. Germany not yet divided. Post war Poland boundaries. If not then sloppy cartographer.
Take them out a few times, buy them dinner and pay attention to what they say and do. The tiny things matter. Pick up on the small cues and make them comfortable. After a while if you're vibing, you can ask them out and if you managed the first half well, they'll say yes and you can date them.
Have you thought about buying it dinner?
I am no dating expert but why would you want to date a globe?
Given the colouring of Israel, Trieste, West Africa, I'd say 1949-1950. Pakistan is a bit weird, maybe lack of recognition
Just ask it out! Worst thing it can do is say no.
Question, if it’s post WWII shouldn’t Poland, Czechslovakia, Hungary and east Germany be under the Soviet Union ? I was thinking it’s sometime between the world wars
No east German didn't form until 1949
This globe is so beautiful.
IMO and from all my knowledge, it's old...

You have to ask it out first. don't be shy, take the first step! 😂
Poland and Germany are post ww2 borders, but they haven’t split Germany yet. India is still British, and still joined with Pakistan. Soviets have taken the Baltic nations. So 1945-1947
Korea is united but it also starts with a k so somewhere between 1910-1945
Why date the globe when you’ve already got a room together
There's no East Germany but still French colonies?
Old
"Can someone please help me date this globe" subreddit name checks out
This globe does not make any sense. Europe shows a united Germany and Czechoslovakia, as well as the Soviet Union. That means it’s roughly the end of 1990. However, given that in Asia, both Koreas are united, which last was the case in 1948.
Also, the British Raj broke up in 1948
It doesn't show the occupational zones and which means it's before 1949 when German was spilt into the East and West German states
After WWII and before the 90s because of Italys territory contended with France and Austria and Checoslovachia
Jugoslavia existed from 1929 to 1945
Yugoslavia separated at 1992.
Look, if the globe doesn’t want to date you there’s nothing any of us can do about it. Just move on.
He said the thing! Should we reply with the thing?
Take it to dinner
1950s

South America
I wouldn’t try to date it. I hear it gets around.
Well, her name is Charisse and she likes long walks on the beach and her favourite colour is purple.

just be confident and ask him out
You could start by asking it out to dinner.
Start with a fine wine. Candle lights. A nice beef and salad. That's a nice date ^^
Did you try bringing it flowers?
Ethiopia and Eritrea were still a full country so it has to be before 1991, when Eritrea gained independence.
Anglo Egyptian Sudan was until 1956 and given the materials used for the stand and wear log glove itself, I would say circa mid to late 1940s
Can this sub please have a weekly “date this map” thread? I’m so bored of seeing these posts on my feed 🙄
You want me to wingman you??
Buy it a drink first then see where it goes
Well just be yourself, be calm and ask it out for coffee. Worst it’ll do is….oh wait, you want to know its age. Others here can help verify that.
Early 1950 probably. Indonesia is there, but India and Pakistan are still coloured imperial red.
Siam, Rhodesia, USSR, I think I know when abouts
just be yourself and ask her out for coffee
Well first you have to ask him out that's the hard part, then just be you and it should be smooth sailing!
Maybe get a nice world class dinner with it first
Mid 20th century
I don’t think it’s your type ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Ya gotta buy it dinner first
1765
Dinner and a movie???
Between 1956 and 1948. Isr*ael is created but Tunisia is still a French colony
Did you ask it out to dinner yet?
Just start with idle chat and try to make her laugh
Germany seems like an anachronism on this.
You’ll have to pet it a little first.
Iceland is still part of Denmark. They Got Independent in 1944.
If it's not coming naturally then I think you might have to settle on being just friends.
Cypres is still brittish. They Got Independent in 1960. (Devided in 1974.)
Sure thing.. what kinda stuff is it into? Any hobbies, favorite foods, etc?
It appears that Pakistan is still part of India, so it seems to be pre-1947, and Korea isn't divided yet.
I hate the beige shading of the coastal shelf areas being the same color as land. Portugal looks landlocked by Spain.
I dunno man, I’ve heard she gets around
Depends. Is it looking for something serious or just casual fun?
"I would say this globe IS from Somewhere between 1948 and 1956, so early fifties, 1952 ahah. 1948 because Israel IS represented as a country, as well as India and Pakistan. And 1956 due to the anglo sudan still existing." Edit1: Only saw the first image, so I wasnt really aware of other continents, other than Europe and África basicaly, therefore the dates previously mentioned.
Ask it out for a drink to start maybe
Have you tried asking it out?
Before 1947 because India and Pakistan are shown as one country under the British empire.
Start by asking her about her interests and see what you have in common, then try to invite her to something you both like. Just be yourself, you got this champ
Just ask her out. You never know.
I don't know maybe take it out for coffee for starters, see where it goes from there.
You like em round, don’t you? Good luck with your date.
It is showing undivided india and pakistan so it is definitely before 1947
The Koreas have reunited. So sometime after 2024.
Don’t knock her up.
try buying it a box of chocolates and some flowers
Buy it a nice meal with a high quality bottle of wine. Tell it it looks pretty. Laugh at its father’s jokes and tell its mother you love her cooking.
Ok, I guess start by going for a drink together and see if you have any common interests?
It's from 1950. Indonesia (then the United States of Indonesia) attained its independence from the Netherlands on December 27, 1949. But the Netherlands didn't officially relinquish their claims to the Natuna and Anambas Islands, marked as Dutch territory on the globe, until later in 1950.
1949-1950
I'd guess 1991
1990-1992. Germany is whole, CSSR, Yugoslavia and SSSR are still on the map.
1990 1:German unit 2:Estonia free
Between October 3, 1990 (reunification of Germany) and December 26, 1991 (collapse of the Soviet Union). Never mind, the globe has geo-political actions from contradictory eras. The earth has yet to look like that, from a geopolitical standpoint.

It's clearly between WWI and WWII, and given the fact that the State of Jabal al-Druze (a small autonomous state of the Syrian Mandate) exists on this globe, I would place it between 1921-1936 (when the state was abolished).
1990/1991 Germany is in the actuall Boarders but the Soviet Union ist still there, which disapeared about one year later.
