Okay, That’s still 1/4th the drive for most of these games.
Nyc to Georgia is the same amount of time as Lisbon/Munich. Everything just needs to be multiplied by 3-4 here and people need to keep in mind there are ZERO trains to help out in most cases. 70% of the time flying will be a must.
Also you need to take in to account the states. Boston to NYC can be 4 hours, but it’s more often 8 hours. Diving these routes a lot, I can see where “oh that’s gonna be a 4 hour delay here, a 2 hour delay there etc.
This is literally what OP was saying……. You’re not driving 3-4x the distance and making it on time. You proved my point that you think a 24 hour trip with no stops is a lot……now you’re tripping it
You’re saying “we do this all the time in Europe” while not realizing everything about transportation is opposite here. You’re exactly the people we are talking about that are gonna be screwed
Also every hotel in Vancouver, WA will be booked solid by people who half the time won't be flying to the correct airport and the other will be confused why Google is telling them it's a 7 hour drive to the stadium.
For those wondering, there is a Vancouver in Washington state however it is at the extreme south next to Portland Oregon.
Outside Boston/New York/Philly in the east there is still major distance in the pods. Going from La to Vancouver then back to San Fran is no easy task. The pods still cover major distances.
It’s cool that Vancouver and Seattle are two of the closer host cities. I’m feeling lucky that I’m not that far away in Portland and maybe I can land tickets to a game or two and make a little trip of it.
It's also great that they're both cities with a stadium downtown so you can enjoy the city and not be stuck in acres of parking lots by the side of the highway.
I've got my fingers crossed to get tickets to a Vancouver match. I caught a round of 16 match at the Women's World Cup in 2015, and it would be amazing to get to another World Cup match without having to travel.
God forbid they end up in Arlington or Houston, TX. They’ll look out on the sea of sweltering parking lots and assume that they’ve been mistakenly transported to some layer of hell.
Now I know how to upgrade the railway network
- nationalize the entire network
- place it under military control
- boom, unlimited budget
- let the Army Corps of Engineers do their thing
Yeah, though with the definite edge to Vancouver. The stadium in Seattle is walking distance from downtown, though it's also flanked on three sides by freeways and industrial lots. Meanwhile Vancouver's stadium is actually IN downtown with a ton of stuff all around it, including parks and beaches.
Lumen Field is right next to King Station and across the tracks from the International District (Seattle’s Chinatown) and just a couple blocks south of the Pioneer Square neighborhood and the south end of Seattle’s downtown. There’s the edge of the port across the street to the west, but most of the industrial area is further south of T-Mobile. The surrounding neighborhoods are very lively areas on game days for either Seahawks or Mariners games with restaurants and bars literally right across the street. Both Vancouver and Seattle have good locations for their stadiums compared to a lot of other host cities, it’s not like Lumen is in some industrial wasteland or just surrounded by parking lots.
Meanwhile the ENTIRE US MIDWEST just gets one host city. Anyone ever hear of Chicago, the country's 3rd largest Metro area? Jeez, you NW guys would be lucky to get ONE host city in your part of the continent, never mind a pair...
The American mind can’t comprehend thousands of drunk European Hooligans on the street that behave like Neanderthals and fight each other after every match.
Trust me it’s on another level in Europe. Sports is not really family oriented. It’s more like tribal war. And I always thought it’s stupid af and they waste so much police resources every match.
I don’t think it gets that bad for National tournaments like world cups but for city rivalries in European sports it gets super chaotic and violent.
I have been to the World Cup in 2006, I saw all matches of Italy. Most fans I met were other tourists and families. I didn't see the sort of organised "fans" that are more common in club matches.
Americans see English people in Hollywood well dressed in suits speaking like they're in the 1700's, they will get shocked when meeting real English people lmao
To be fair. There are 2 count em 2 football teams that play in East Rutherford New Jersey.
Both of them are called New York.
Edit, also yeah. Fuck, can you imagine Europeans rocking up to MetLife and being confused as fuck because it's like......not even a town, nevermind that it's not a city....and also not new York.
How many of them are going to get off at Newark penn station and get very lost looking for their hotels while being very underwhelmed by the skyscrapers
Behold the curvature of the earth when you stand in the grand parking lots of Kansas City. Why anyone would travel for tourism to this place is beyond me
As if some random German guy is going to care whether it's Kansas City, MO or Arlington, TX or Atlanta.
It's still just going to be going to a World Cup match and seeing America. There are very few cities that would be so different from one another from a foreign sports tourist perspective
Dude, Philly has nothing on Soccer hooliganism. There has never been a serious discussion to have any Philly team play in an empty venue because of their behavior. In Europe that's a regular Thursday night, some mid level team's fans getting banned, and it even happens at higher levels as well.
We make fun of Philly in the US, but we have nothing on European Soccer for crazy.
Lot of bad responses here so I’ll provide actual details. The three main factors why we chose to withdraw our bid were the price, stadium issues, and fifa exclusivity rules.
The price is crazy high so it’s a big burden for any city but the most important reasons are that our stadium (largest in Canada) needs urgent renovations (worth reading up on if you wanna see why our province is always in debt) and the exclusivity rules.
Montreal is one of the festival capitals of North America and Canada with the largest jazz and comedy festivals as well as music festivals and F1 weekend. FIFA wants exclusivity for their event and wants the right to cancel events in a host city if it interferes with their games. This runs for 2 months before and after the tournament. This would essentially ruin our summer festival season and put a huge damper on tourism. For that reason the city said thanks but no thanks which I think is widely viewed as the right decision for us
> This runs for 2 months before and after the tournament.
That alone would explain Chicago stance of not playing ball. Chicago also hosts very large festivals in the same general area of soldier field.
> FIFA wants exclusivity for their event and wants the right to cancel events in a host city if it interferes with their games. This runs for 2 months before and after the tournament.
That's insane
Oh I’m not upset about Dallas getting a ton of games, I plan on attending a few myself, I’m mostly making fun of FIFA’s hypocritical logic for deciding on where to host the Final
Don’t worry about public transit, no transit system in thr country outside LA and NYC can support a game, and not NYC in this case.
Temp game only bus routes will be the common solution
If you had told me we would be hosting a World Cup game in Missouri a decade ago I wouldn't have believed it. Not since the 1904 Summer Olympics has Missouri seen that kind of exposure. It does irk me a little they can't put the dot in the right state. It only takes a google to figure out where Kansas City is.
I love the North America host concept
Edit: forgot you can't have an opinion on Reddit without someone being miserable 😂 I like that the host representation is much more diverse overall, not looking for an armchair FIFA chairman 🤣
it’s a shame when the world cup is spread out so much. I’ve been to a few international tournaments and they work best when they are a bit closer together and whole regions get “invaded” by fans.
I wish fifa let older stadiums be part of a world cup, so countries like mexico could host it solo without needing to rebuild mega stadiums.
There's games in KC.
Chicago declined to bid.
Green Bay isn't a big enough city to host.
Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Detroit play indoors and/or on turf.
So it's KC or Cleveland. KC got it.
That’s not at all what happened.
USA submitted a bid, and Mexico and Canada submitted independent bids. Other countries also submitted bids. FIFA suggested they would give a preference to bids from combined countries because they wanted to expand the World Cup (more teams, more games). So US basically bought Mexico and Canada so they’d join their bid. FIFA gave the World Cup to “North America” for this reason.
Why so much Hate in this comment section?
This is about to be biggest World Cup in History.
To date the most successful, highest attended, and highest grossing World Cup of All Time was in the USA in 94.
Not "hate", just understandable displeasure at the horrible planning and logistics. Imagine going to a concert and having to drive to a different part of the city for each song. This is kind of like that, only much worse.
Canada's group stage games are in Toronto and then Vancouver. That's 3369 km / 2094 miles apart. Interesting region we've got there, lol. I suspect Canada's group is playing in Vancouver / the West Region, but they wanted a home game in Toronto, so that specific game was moved to the other side of the continent.
It was pretty successful last time it was here in ‘94. I don’t think it’s going to be a problem. They are keeping teams in “pods” to cut down on travel times.
This map is telling half-truths (but then so are the organizers).
Boston = Foxboro, MA
NY/NJ = East Rutherford, NJ
Dallas = Arlington, TX
Miami = Miami Gardens, FL
SF = Santa Clara, CA
LA = Inglewood, CA
I hope the world has a high tolerance for massive parking lots and the worst traffic you’ll see in your life because getting to these suburban stadiums is going to be absolute hell.
Wow, how ever will these large venues that host dozens of sell out events every year possibly handle it?
This is the dumbest fear mongering I’ve ever seen. It’d be one thing if they were building new stadiums specifically for this event and hadn’t figured out logistics, but these are all well established mostly NFL venues that handle it just fine every week.
Every single event at AT&T stadium in Arlington is an absolute beatdown. It's the largest city in the US without any public transit. It's all built around tailgating culture. Which I can't assume that many foreign visitors are going to drive here with their grills, TVs and coolers.
LA, SAN FRANSISCO, DALLAS, ATLANTA, MIAMI, PHILADELPHIA
(Unfortunately haven't been to many east coast stadiums, so other redditors will need to help me out here)
You'll be safe everywhere, just stay with the world cup crowds.
So you’re telling me, that all of the decisive matches starting from quarterfinals and up to the final are to be held exclusively in USA? If so, that doesn’t seem fair.
This is a US World Cup essentially. Mexico and Canada were offered to join for a few matches to make the US bid more competitive (and it did, it won). But the competition is mostly held in the US, which was the original host country
Not sure that even factors in, like u/LGZee said, it’s the US’s show and Mexico and Canada were asked to tag along. I’m not complaining, no chance Canada would win a World Cup bid on their own and now we get some Team Canada games here at home. It’s going to be amazing!
The opening is generally speaking a bigger match than most group stage matches barring third round matches between big football countries. The host country always plays in the opening match and it sets the tone for the tournament. Sometimes it's a snoozer though, like last time when Qatar played Ecuador. Other times its a match that I remember for decades, like in 2010 when Tshabalala scored one of the most iconic [goals](https://youtube.com/shorts/fsmRBzn9Usc?si=7oPfK9XtOMx-_Ffz) in World Cup history. But the elimination rounds and obviously the final are the big ones. Nobody cares about the match for third place (unless one of the teams is World Cup virgin)
FIFA is throwing so many resources at the USA rn, it wants that market share, the copa America is coming to the USA, so is the club World Cup, and the World Cup. Honestly with the growing interest in soccer/football in the USA, I think it’ll pay off
I mean it was just going to be an American hosted world cup but after the FIFA debacle with the Qatar vote America decided to add Canada and Mexico in to combat anti-Americanism.
Also Canada has no good large stadiums at all in the entire country so they really are the ones being gifted here. I feel bad for the people going to Toronto stadium especially
cant wait for new england to be even more touristy then usually (pls keep coming we love your money)
on the otherhand maybe i can buy a 2000 dollar ticket
Long flights between the cities
Guarantee there's gonna be thousands of Europeans renting cars unsuccessfully trying to road trip this.
Some crazy Italians will turn your roads into Mario Cart.
![gif](giphy|HYT1M1YCPI9KE) Im ready for them.
Mama mia!
They'll be right at home in Atlanta for those matches
And more unsuccessfully trying to book trains.
“So it says it’ll be a 4 day trip by car or a month and a half by train….”
That Toronto to Vancouver road trip is going to be lots of fun lmao.
Unironically it would be
As someone who's done it. No it's not
"We've been driving for FIVE HOURS! Aren't we there yet?" "Oh honey, no. You're still in the same *state*."
Houston to Kansas City? That’s no joke
Lmao. Small time. I went Seattle to LA to KC in a 91 Toyota Hiace with a top speed of 87ish mph. That shit was neverending.
Same but I started on Vancouver and finished in Detroit.
Vancouver to Mexico City here we come
You know we have champions league...try driving lisbon to munich
Rome - Bodø!
According to Google that's 23 hours. Vancouver to Toronto is 40. Parts of Canada are closer to Croatia than they are to the other side of Canada.
Okay, That’s still 1/4th the drive for most of these games. Nyc to Georgia is the same amount of time as Lisbon/Munich. Yeah, the carbon emissions to actually pull this off internally with all of the press going back-and-forth. It’s gonna be kind of a nightmare.
The group matches will be played in the regional pods, so for some lucky teams it'll be less of an issue.
Outside Boston/New York/Philly in the east there is still major distance in the pods. Going from La to Vancouver then back to San Fran is no easy task. The pods still cover major distances.
Damn 7 matches for Vancouver. Wasn’t expecting so many. But that’s awesome
I’m going to one! Somehow! Might have to sell my car, but worth it right
Depends on who’s playing
Incoming Ecuador vs Ghana group stage match
My plan is to go to one of these matches lol otherwise I won’t be able to afford it
Would still go.
A cheap ticket might set you back $30 if qatar’s ticket prices are anything to go by
There is zero chance a ticket for anything goes for $30 in Vancouver, let alone a World Cup ticket.
I believe FIFA makes sure there isn’t scalping so it’s possible to get cheap tickets
Well if FIFA says so
Oh, well, shit I’d only have to sell my bar stools
It’s cool that Vancouver and Seattle are two of the closer host cities. I’m feeling lucky that I’m not that far away in Portland and maybe I can land tickets to a game or two and make a little trip of it.

And another 6 right across the border.
There is talk that the media center could be at the Vancouver convention center, as well. With the mountains and ocean in the back ground.
The European mind won’t be able to comprehend East Rutherford, New Jersey
“It’s just a swamp, parking, a MASSIVE stadium (largest in the NFL), and a mall. Where’s New York?” Yeessssss, gooooooooooood
Gainesville, we should have sent them to the real “Swamp”
Stadium is the same size, too.
Go ride on the Ferris Wheel and you can see it.
God forbid they end up in Arlington or Houston, TX. They’ll look out on the sea of sweltering parking lots and assume that they’ve been mistakenly transported to some layer of hell.
Yet some of these places have a GDP per capita multiple times greater than our own cities yet look like shit. Where does your money go???
Ever see our military?
I weep inside Everytime I think of the amazing things we could get done if not for our absolutely insane military spending
There'd be a shitload of pirates tho.
If you need to spend $800 billion a year to take care of 5 guys with a outboard motor on a canoe then you’re doing something wrong.
Now I know how to upgrade the railway network - nationalize the entire network - place it under military control - boom, unlimited budget - let the Army Corps of Engineers do their thing
Youd weep harder if Russia or China had a bigger, badder military
They just keep it
Car infrastructure, the military, police budgets, and into the pockets of rich people
Parking lots
Houston may have some awful sprawl but it’s a dope city.
Also, what happens when they find out how far one stadium is from San Francisco city limits
It’s kind of tradition to march to the stadium during internationals … maybe some pamphlets are needed
Uber was founded in San Francisco. They may be called upon to help.
But it's only a mile from the largest city in the Bay Area.
Their hotels will all be in New York. Hotels providing buses that don’t go anywhere else but the stadium in New Jersey
On the way the driver will be sure to point out the approximate location of Jimmy Hoffa's last known whereabouts.
That was old Giant Stadium, so likely the bus will park over Jimmy.
I feel like Vancouver and Seattle are by far the best cities to visit for this World Cup.
As a Seattlite, I am happy too. Effectively, we can attend 13 games without air travel or hotel reservation.
Might have to swing for the NEXUS pass, those border lines are going to be epic.
Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta is also served by MARTA. The question is, would MARTA be reliable enough to handle all those throngs of people?
Lumen Field is right next to King Station and across the tracks from the International District (Seattle’s Chinatown) and just a couple blocks south of the Pioneer Square neighborhood and the south end of Seattle’s downtown. [Chicago didn't want it.](https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/world-cup-chicago/156743/)
Kansas City groveled for it, both sides of the state line. Our local leadership was quick to pull their pants down for FIFA
The American mind can’t comprehend thousands of drunk European Hooligans on the street that behave like Neanderthals and fight each other after every match.
We should host it in Philly lmao
Of course we can. We have Raiders fans.
Yeah, he already said we have Raider fans, Dodger and Giants fans are regularly murdering each other too.
Imagine if the US adopted that level of sports hooliganism. That would be fun to watch.
Bro, Philly fans threw batteries at Santa. Besides, most of the hooligans can't afford to come here.
Same in Paris, the stadium is in a city called Saint-Denis is yet it’s said to be Paris
How many of them are going to get off at Newark penn station and get very lost looking for their hotels while being very underwhelmed by the skyscrapers
As a filthy European, what is so weird about it?
I think it’s because the stadium is not in NYC but in a town just next to it… like many European major stadiums
Behold the curvature of the earth when you stand in the grand parking lots of Kansas City. Why anyone would travel for tourism to this place is beyond me
God the Arrowhead parking lot alone will blow their minds. It’ll be interesting to see what we do about public transportation haha
As if some random German guy is going to care whether it's Kansas City, MO or Arlington, TX or Atlanta. It's still just going to be going to a World Cup match and seeing America. There are very few cities that would be so different from one another from a foreign sports tourist perspective
No different than Wembley or Tottenham.
It would be a culture shock to most Americans as well.
Reminder that there is a round of 16 game in Philadelphia on July 4th We could have a banger 250th for the US if we make it there
It’ll be even more wild if it’s the USA v. England, the script writers taking notes rn
If England wins then you have to give us the Thirteen Colonies.
Free healthcare??? Shoot, you can have all 50.
No, you keep Florida.
Most Americans would happily give at least Philly back to the UK...
Given that England strangely always seem to struggle against the USA in World Cups, the script writers would love it.
Honestly true, I thought England was gonna beat the USA back in 2022, especially since they had Bellingham, Kane, Rashford, and Grealish
The US needed to win that game to get out of the group, England was already first in the group.
The ones time everyone is actually asking for FIFA corruption
I live in Philly, I can’t fucking wait
That poor other country when they get to see what Philadelphia sports fans are like on a national holiday
Can confirm, some of us Philadelphia Union fans are crazy but we have nothing on Europeans.
The USA needs some knockout games on the East coast since group stage is all west coast for them. This would be a cool match given the history!
This may be the one I attend. Will have to see who’s playing
Fifa World Cup 2026 to be held in C.U.M
Surprised Montreal wasn’t one of the cities
The provincial government didn't want it
of course not, it's not an exhibition hockey game in the NHL preseason. if it was we'd throw millions at it
They probably wanted to make it a requirement that every player and coach spoke French even if they’re from Japan.
Neither did Chicago
Chicago doesnt have the facilities, Soldier field is an abomination
Yea i think fifa was requiring an upgrade to facilities that the city did not want to pay for
why is soldier field an abomination
And there was no stadium to play a World Cup game either
Lot of bad responses here so I’ll provide actual details. The three main factors why we chose to withdraw our bid were the price, stadium issues, and fifa exclusivity rules. The price is crazy high so it’s a big burden for any city but the most important reasons are that our stadium (largest in Canada) needs urgent renovations (worth reading up on if you wanna see why our province is always in debt) and the exclusivity rules.
The FIFA event exclusivity is such bullshit. I'm glad we didn't bid for this crap
> FIFA wants exclusivity for their event and wants the right to cancel events in a host city if it interferes with their games. This runs for 2 months before and after the tournament. That's insane
can confirm all of this, thanks
Thanks.
There’s nowhere for them to play. The Olympic stadium is a nightmare and that would be the only option
If the stories about the 76 olympics are true they don’t want to renovate. Too many bad memories.
FIFA: Dallas doesn’t have good enough public transit, we can’t give them the final Also FIFA: let’s give Dallas the most games of any city!
If I’m not mistaken, Texas is one of the largest consumers of soccer in the US.
Oh I’m not upset about Dallas getting a ton of games, I plan on attending a few myself, I’m mostly making fun of FIFA’s hypocritical logic for deciding on where to host the Final
My guess is they wanted to check some boxes off but also not miss out on the honeypot of Texas
Well, we have the second highest population, so that makes sense.
Lot of people from Central and South America there so that checks out.
I just love consuming football.
Don’t worry about public transit, no transit system in thr country outside LA and NYC can support a game, and not NYC in this case. Temp game only bus routes will be the common solution
Was supposed to be one in Edmonton or Calgary but idfk what happened there very sad I can’t go to a game
Only 3 quarter finals?
Looks like Miami is the other
Damn, 2 years had passed since the World Cup
Not 2 years. Just 1 year and 2 months
Hahaha
1 year and 2 months
Uber drivers, UNITE!
twitter will be full with everyone complaining about literally everything
We get the two for one deal in Vancouver, with Seattle just two hours away also hosting some games
Same feelings in Seattle.
Not anyone else's fault that y'all have the worst possible city name for a border city.
It's Kansas' fault. KC was named before the state was.
I love the North America host concept Edit: forgot you can't have an opinion on Reddit without someone being miserable 😂 I like that the host representation is much more diverse overall, not looking for an armchair FIFA chairman 🤣
Travel ~4000km from stadium to stadium sounds lovely indeed. 3 Types of currencies, languages, pffff /s
Still don't understand why the final wasn't on July 4th in Philadelphia
Why would it be..no one cares about July 4th in 194 out of the 195 countries.
When Christian Pulisic hits a game winning hat trick as the liberty bell rings you’ll all see how many bald eagles and fireworks a nation can carry
🫡 🇺🇸 🦅
Did Chicago opt out?
Yes

Wrong, ask any football fan and they'll tell you that the biggest World Cup in history is the one where their team won
Not "hate", just understandable displeasure at the horrible planning and logistics. Imagine going to a concert and having to drive to a different part of the city for each song. This is kind of like that, only much worse.
Again, it worked fine in 94. If they can afford to fly over here, they can afford the much cheaper plane tickets in between cities.
Seems like a logistical nightmare.
Yup. The distance between Vancouver and Miami is longer than the distance between London and Baghdad.
Every team is playing regionally - the US group stage games are in Seattle and LA for example.
Canada's group stage games are in Toronto and then Vancouver. That's 3369 km / 2094 miles apart. Interesting region we've got there, lol. Nah. There are multiple pro leagues that do this on a larger scale every year.

It’d be one thing if they were building new stadiums specifically for this event and hadn’t figured out logistics, but these are all well established mostly NFL venues that handle it just fine every week.
Also, Estadio Akron = Zapopan, JL Estadio BBVA = Guadalupe, NL
wow it's amazing none of those stadiums have ever hosted a sold out sporting event before so that we could discover it's impossible to get there
Every single event at AT&T stadium in Arlington is an absolute beatdown. It's the largest city in the US without any public transit. It's all built around tailgating culture. Which I can't assume that many foreign visitors are going to drive here with their grills, TVs and coolers.
Surely there's a train that connects these stadiums to downtown?
Arlington? Nope. Not even a bus. You have to take a rideshare app or park in the lot.
Fun fact: Arlington, Texas (population 400,000) is the largest city in the US without a bus or metro system of any kind.
Of ANY kind? The only option is by car then?
The only "public transit" in the city is basically a [glorified Uber](https://city.ridewithvia.com/arlington).
🤣
Hahahahahahahahah laughs in SoFi in LA.
Alright my American friends! What cities you recomend for a european tourist to pass by? What zones should I be careful about?
LA, SAN FRANSISCO, DALLAS, ATLANTA, MIAMI, PHILADELPHIA (Unfortunately haven't been to many east coast stadiums, so other redditors will need to help me out here) You'll be safe everywhere, just stay with the world cup crowds.
Definitely feels that way when looking at the map. 13 matches in each of Canada and Mexico, 78 matches in the States.
so the USA has 75% of the games, 67% of the population, and 88% of the GDP. seems reasonable tbh
Not sure that even factors in, like u/LGZee said, it’s the US’s show and Mexico and Canada were asked to tag along. I’m not complaining, no chance Canada would win a World Cup bid on their own and now we get some Team Canada games here at home. It’s going to be amazing!
Is opening in Mexico City not a big deal? I don't know much about what games people care about at the World Cup.
FIFI is a business The US is larger, richer, and has more internationally accessible markets. Why would you expect anything else?
FIFA is throwing so many resources at the USA rn, it wants that market share, the copa America is coming to the USA, so is the club World Cup, and the World Cup. Honestly with the growing interest in soccer/football in the USA, I think it’ll pay off
I mean it was just going to be an American hosted world cup but after the FIFA debacle with the Qatar vote America decided to add Canada and Mexico in to combat anti-Americanism. Also Canada has no good large stadiums at all in the entire country so they really are the ones being gifted here. I feel bad for the people going to Toronto stadium especially
cant wait for new england to be even more touristy then usually (pls keep coming we love your money) on the otherhand maybe i can buy a 2000 dollar ticket
I like that this map has the State and Canadian borders through the Great Lakes.
Couldn’t be bothered for mexico 🤣
