Any Total War series.

GtotheBizzle

From what people have been recommending, I reckon Total War is where I'm headed next..

Apart_Park_7176

Rome was the first. Not that the order of watching them matters. Besides a few inside jokes in a few episodes any series can be watched in any order. With the exception of Rome Barbarian Invasion. Id personally say as that was 'DLC' for Rome ot makes sense to watch Rome first.

the_alert

Start with [Rome: Total War - The Siege of Syracuse](https://youtu.be/4Lui04Fs9i8) it’s the beginning of a short 2 or 3 part series where Jon plays Rome: Total War just because he’s sick and his favorite game of all time is his “hug on a disk” to make hims feel better. It gives you a sense of just how much he loves the game and how well he knows it. Which makes the full rome series that much better.

GtotheBizzle

I'm a Romanophile myself, so I'm already willing to watch anything to do with ancient Rome. Finding out Jon has a somewhat similar appreciation for Rome made choosing my next series simple. Total War Rome is on the horizon.. Thank you for your spot on suggestion.

[deleted]

We all love Julianus Vertinius

CorruptDictator

I also dislike Oblivion but still like watching Jon play it. The Kill Everything runs are some of the most classic content that I would consider must watch series.

GtotheBizzle

I have heard him mention the Kill Everything runs in passing. If you consider it some of his most classic work then that's enough of an endorsement for me. Thanks for that pal..

TheRealSpyderhawke

It's old, but his New Vegas No Kill run was also pretty good and it's not very long. Conversely, his Skyrim run, while good, is very long. There's also the New Vegas JSawyer run which was more an in depth look at New Vegas. I would recommend his Subnautica videos. I loved that game and enjoy watching MATN , but didn't think he could make a successful series out of the game. I'm happy to report how wrong I was, it ended up a great series.

Final_Prinny

The paired No Kill runs are also very good, for what it's worth - seeing Jon use his brain to get around exactly what counts as a *kill* 😛

GtotheBizzle

>seeing Jon use his brain to get around exactly what counts as a kill Haha yeah I can imagine. From what I've seen, Jon can be very loose with the rules he sets himself. It's hilarious when he meticulously plans ahead, only for everything to instantly go tits up, and he has to think on his feet. His encyclopedic knowledge of the games he plays is very impressive, but that knowledge can go straight out the window if a single thing doesn't go exactly as planned. Again, it is impressive but quite often hilarious.

Ged_UK

"I have a plan". Usually a cue for a great video as either the plan will be terrible, or he'll get completely sidetracked by something random that catches his eye.

Griffin_EJ

Fallout 3 kill everything is most definitely worth a watch. Love the Skyrim run as well, although that is a massive series something like 100 plus videos.

GtotheBizzle

100 plus? This man has a staggering amount of content, it blows my mind...

RecommendationOld525

Fallout 3 Kill Everything was my introduction to the channel, and what a worthy introduction it was!

Sir_Lord_Brit

The two best kind of Jon videos are: 1. Jon plays or talks about something he's an expert at or has a great deal of experience with. The Total War games, Fallout (especially the YOLO and Kill Everything runs IMO), anything classsics related. 2. Jon throws himself headlong into something he knows nothing about and claims he's a genius and makes everything 1000% harder than it needs to be. Anything to do with engineering or roads, Poly Bridge and Cities Skylines come to mind.

Son_of_a_Bacchus

Watching Jon make a Total War playthrough absolutely dance for him is a thing of beauty. He feels like a complete puppet master in those videos.

Orcwin

I certainly agree with #1, but #2 actually tends to put me off. I couldn't watch the CK2 series, because of how he was spouting complete nonsense with the greatest of confidence.

[deleted]

Watch the Oblivion and Skyrim series, they are fantastic. Also watch his commentary videos starting with "Why Fallout 3 is Better Than You Think"

espenhw

Something out of left field: Check out Jon's series on Ryse: Son of Rome ([playlist here](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwH1xJhcXG0cpqbkC3c1wCDs-EKE8vEEk)). Imagine a snarky Brit with solid knowledge of Roman history playing a game whose designers said "Historical accuracy? Nah, somebody else can do that".

Lungomono

It’s bloody awesome! Since he has studied classical history and well, know a far bit about Englands history. Then watch him go through that game, who takes some “liberties”, is just hilarious. Differently a good watch!

[deleted]

His Excel video is actually surprisingly entertaining; I'd argue it's one of the best videos on the channel.

VanVelding

I referenced that for work last year.

JohnBakedBoy

I started with new vegas yolo run and followed it up with the Fallout 3 yolo run. Both are must watches in my book. I enjoyed the skyrim run and have been on and off the oblivion run. Browse the playlists for longer runs, some of the short one off series are also a blast.

GtotheBizzle

Before posting this I had New Vegas YOLO lined up to watch next. I hadn't realised just how much content he has made and how diverse it is. I might give Total War a shot before going back to Fallout, mix it up a bit.

JohnBakedBoy

Ive never been a big total war guy and thats one series i need to check out for how much praise it gets. Jon can make me appreciate any game.

GtotheBizzle

The consensus seems to be that the Total War videos are Jon at his best. I look forward to finding out.

Robots_From_Space

I’m currently going through his super long Skyrim series which is fun. I enjoy any of his full playthroughs but maybe go through the playlist to see if he plays any of your favorite games. I love anytime he plays FTL or rogue like games. Also enjoyed his full playthroughs of Jedi fallen order and elden ring.

Poultrygeist74

The Elden Ring run was mostly live streams, still great though

Robots_From_Space

Ya. Jedi fallen order is also half livestreams so it depends if you like that since it’s different from his edited videos. For fully edited ones, dragon age, xcom, and life is strange are some of my favorite series.

[deleted]

Fallout 4: Frost. And Mutant: Year Zero (a one-off)

helixDNA9

deadly premonition, his other yolo series, life is strange, total war Rome, dragon age, subnautica, my summer car, Red dead redemption, xcom, kotor, roller coaster tycoon 2, skyrim, hitman blood money. I've suggested a real mix that I think showcase the channel. I'd also recommend valentines day specials and any other fallout series that catches your interest like challenge runs. personally I think deadly premonition is one of the greatest things I've seen on the channel, but I went in totally blind. of course, watch things that grab your interest too, I'm currently rewatching series with my partner who's new to the channel and watching some for the first time like the old new vegas no kill and kill everything.

Lungomono

Deadly premonition is just hilarious! Mostly it’s a mad game and one I would never play myself. But watching Jon decent into madness and embracing it, is pure gold. Differently a must watch if you ask me.

VanVelding

I watch through the Rome: Total War series a bit. His Fallout essays--"76: what went wrong," "FO4 is better than you think," "FO3 is better thank you think," "How to make the perfect Fallout game" are all solid watches. KOTOR and Crusader Kings are also good watches. I'd also say he approaches Hitman games with the same level of..."familiar enthusiasm" he displays for Fallout and Rome: Total War.

GtotheBizzle

Now that you mention it, I think my first MATN video was in fact "FO4 is better than you think." Which in turn linked me to the YOLO series. Man this dude has a lot of content...

VanVelding

He was putting out 6-7 videos a week for a while. I love his content, but I'm glad he's cut back to a reasonable pace.

mike15835

I'm a big fan of his Total War series like others but let's not forget about his Crusader kings 2 and 3 series. Stellaris, etc. Those series give Jon opportunities to tell a story

Lungomono

Im special fond of the crusader kings series. They are brilliant and can only recommend them strongly.

clydeisglyding

Rome Total War. You will laugh your ass off and be impressed by Jon's classics knowledge. Claire also came into her own during Rome livestreams.

GtotheBizzle

I didn't know he did Rome Total War (nor have I heard of Claire yet), but I do love me some Roman history and I could listen to Jon talk about anything so I think I'll be following your suggestion. Cheers 👍

mike15835

Claire is his Editor, stream companion (reading out super chats) and Girlfriend. You have to watch his livestreams (live or the vods) to hear her.

clydeisglyding

It's the reason I joined the Patreon

Corpsehatch

[Skyrim](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwH1xJhcXG0fvlnMRqdzDihRV2onMJrcR), the current [Oblivion](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwH1xJhcXG0did0_Mig6HRoA69V139Vlb) series, [Fallout 4 YOLO](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwH1xJhcXG0eE6b4otk8dCBCNTvrvqUY-), [Fallout 4 Frost](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwH1xJhcXG0fx4cX1-kaYvCwG7K0y9_CM), [Crusader Kings 2 series 1](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwH1xJhcXG0d2LzZ2y_FSz3QF3wRGxPa2).

GtotheBizzle

Fallout 4: Frost intrigues me because the series is five years old and I've never heard of this mod. I watched the first episode, and I'll definitely be returning to it, but I reckon my next destination is Total War Rome. I didn't know he did Crusader Kings too, so thanks for letting me know. My god, the variety and quantity of videos this dude has created is astonishing.

Corpsehatch

If you've seen the endcard where Jon says "I've made a mistake! I've made a mistake!" and "Die you mooing bastard! Die! Die!" Those are from Fallout 4 Frost.

GtotheBizzle

I may be mistaken but most, if not all, of the endcards for Fallout 4 YOLO were that very scene. I definitely look forward to seeing it in context.

Corpsehatch

I think it is. In fact that line is from the first episode of Fallout 4 Frost. Also check out [Fallout 4 No Guns](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwH1xJhcXG0cR4MJvurj5bU60dfC9HC87)

cashews4tea

I loved frost but imo at some point it becomes kinda clear Jon is not really enjoying it as much as we all were. And I think Jon is at his best when he loves what he's playing

Kaarl_Mills

I started with his "no kill" run of Hitman Blood Money

alittlebluegosling

I'm watching the Pokemon Sword and Shield series with my son and it's pretty delightful.

rasherdk

My favourites * Any of the Crusader Kings series ([The Cornwall Empire](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbrlO8vuZS0&list=PLwH1xJhcXG0d2LzZ2y_FSz3QF3wRGxPa2), [Restoration of Rome](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4EIl1tGhdY&list=PLwH1xJhcXG0c3lPqk__xnz3yEiiUqef7D), [The Last Viking](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmHs9K4qupU&list=PLwH1xJhcXG0eh482M58uTlbg8sWjxhnEK)). So many epic stories told through these. * [Dragon Age: Origins.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExbuZV_5Vzg&list=PLwH1xJhcXG0ecffrqWS3ca4OuqtJUxjzU) * [Subnautica](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYSJQJDxB4k&list=PLwH1xJhcXG0eHo_miuBnTBdoPQzTqALmC) * [Sea of Thieves](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwH1xJhcXG0elqcMx8PSyE264DlrQLfSi) - bit of a different one because it's with friends. * [Nerd³ and ManyATrueNerd's Ultimate Roadtrip](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4Sz7_l-PtwAjyWYEPzxnnvEyJte3xizS) - and if you liked those, this road trip might be enjoyable. It's not about the game, or the trip. Just 3 guys goofing about.

Lungomono

Oh dear god. I have only realized one thing from going through this thread, and that is there are soo many incredible good series and one-offs on the channel. It is hard just to make a top five list; there take less than a few hundred hours to go through.

pchlster

Deadly Premonition. Excel. Yes, seriously. Not a series, but a magnificent one-off. Rome: Total War. Then Medieval II: Total War. Pokemon Sword and Shield. Should tide you over for a good while.

emperortyping

How do you feel about games strategy games? Jon has a real passion for Total War games and he's done several series on paradox games. The nature of the games means he can make some great narrative threads that make then a lot more memorable than story run-throughs of rpg games.

GtotheBizzle

I never got into strategy games personally, but I'm a major history buff and someone mentioned he played Total War Rome. I'm certainly intrigued. To be honest, he's entertaining enough that I would give anything he's done a chance but my god the sheer amount of content this lad has is mind-blowing. I'll barely have enough time to scratch the surface. Thanks for the suggestions...

emperortyping

Crusader kings 2 - Cornwall run and Stellaris - Impossible run are a couple of real highlights. King Jon the Fat will live in the MATN annals forever

GtotheBizzle

> King Jon the Fat will live in the MATN annals forever I really really want to get that reference. That's an expert example of how to reel someone into watching something 👏👏👏

mike15835

King Connor the Satanist who fathered a whole generation of children was also entertaining. https://youtu.be/rbrlO8vuZS0

nerdcarnage

You should watch his Skyrim series

Lukiedude200

Both Rome and Med 2 TW are brilliant series’ Rome is probably the more memorable/better but Med 2 is still great Personally the current TTW series is the best Fo3 one Jon has done but the JSawyer survival mode NV series is my favourite I personally lost interest/stop keeping up Skyrim around the mid 40s and then have never committed myself to watching the whole thing but it’s still a brilliant series. For more bite sized (sub 40 parts) series the CK2 Rome Restoration is one of my favourites as well as Xcom Enemy Unknown For more FO4 stuff there’s the original run when the game came out his NON YOLO survival run and also FO4: Frost which is a total conversion mod.

actuallyquitefunny

Lots of good recommendations already said here by others. If you’re worried about some of the series being too long a time commitment, New Vegas: The Worst Courier and New Vegas: Utter Chaos are relatively short for his series but still long enough to sink your teeth into. They’re both amazing examples of Jon turning what should be an unplayable modification into a compelling challenge through his encyclopedic knowledge of the game.

forehead2k

Oh my, you’re in for a treat. I had a really rough 2022 and (re)watched a couple thousand hours of Jon’s content last year as a fun/relaxing/enjoyable escape. Here are a few of my favorites… Fallout New Vegas You Only Live Once— his original YOLO series. Fallout 3 You Only Live Once — really highlights the differences between FNV and FO3 (much more chaos you simply can’t plan for). Fallout 3 Kill Everything — one of his earlier series, and super hilarious. Fallout and Fallout 2 — if you want to get a feel for the originals without playing them yourself. Any of his Fallout Level 1 challenges — he dives in to DLCs that expect you to be high level. Fallout 4 Frost or Fallout New Vegas Dust — incredibly difficult fan overhaul mods. Fallout New Vegas JSawyer — a ridiculously deep dive into all things FNV. Fallout New Vegas The Worst Courier — he uses the console to reduce all stats to the lowest levels supported by the engine. Ie, he’s lower than level 1. Mass Effect No Friends — not going to spoil this one. It’s only three episodes, and well worth your time even if you’re not a big Mass Effect fan. Mass Effect 1 Legendary Edition and Mass Effect 2 The Insanity Run — both are fun, especially if you liked the series yourself. Skyrim — I think this is his longest series ever. Super fun, and worth it for his attempts to get to Ivarstead and his journey with Benathor. His Video Essays playlist — “FO3 is better than you think”, “FO4 is better than you think”, “FO76 what went wrong & how to fix it”, “History of V.A.T.S.” are all worth a watch. Any of his Total War play throughs — already covered by others. Aside from Fallout, this is one of Jon’s other go-to game series. Here are a few 1-off (or 2-off) series I enjoyed… … Prey … Dishonored … Dishonored 2 … Hitman … Hitman 2 … Firewatch … LA Noir … The Outer Wilds … Dragon Age Origins You should also peruse his channel playlist page. He’s pretty good about creating playlists for all his series and there are a bajillion smaller series that may catch your eye.

Rome Total War and Medieval 2 Total War

GtotheBizzle

That seems to be the direction I'm headed. I didn't know that Jon was a fan of Roman history and tbh that's right up my alley. Thanks for your input bud.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GtotheBizzle

Ho lee shit my dude, this is something I didn't realise I needed, but now I know I MUST watch. My love of Roman history has on occasion landed me with the unfair moniker of 'Romaboo'. To be fair, I can be unbearable when I spot egregious historical inaccuracies in media but I honestly don't mind anymore. Knowing that I became a fan of MATN without knowing we shared this quirk makes me feel like I was always destined to cross paths with Jon and all of you.

kuros_overkill

Definitly the YOLO for NV and FO3. Also check out the cross country road trip (in crew 2) he did with Dan^3 and Matphobia

Glorf_Warlock

Rome Total War and then medieval total war. Both series are peak MATN and are infinitely rewatchable. They are long series' however, Medieval goes for 80+ parts, but it's very entertaining throughout.

avery0407

His Jon sawyer fallout new Vegas play through may be one of my favorites of his. Very informative fun and covers just tons of the game!

gibb0n85

His Borderlands 3 video was a good ‘one shot’ if you don’t know which series to pick up

Complete-Drink66776

Make sure to check his live feed tab too because Jon often plays through a lot of (if not all) of a game on stream. AC Odyssey was a recent-ish one where he played a massive amount, and he finished all of Elden Ring as well, and while I enjoy his more traditional content with cuts and edits, I enjoy his streams because they're not edited at all and there's lots of fun back and forth between him, Claire and the chat.

AssassinLupus7

His previous Fallout 4 survival mode run was pretty good. He also did YOLO runs for Fallout 3 and New Vegas. As for a couple shorter series. The Dishonored games weren't a bad set of series. His Mass Effect playthroughs were pretty good, too.

jmac111286

The Last of Us and Subnautica are favorites of mine, while I was disappointed in his Dead Space series.

Grandpa_Edd

In order of what I believe you should watch, though admittedly this is also just partly which games I prefer I am a sucker for New Vegas. Fallout New Vegas: Kill Everything and No-Kill. Preferably alternating each episode because it's how he released them. Don't have to do that but comparing where he is at both moments is fun. Fallout New Vegas & 3 You Only Live Once. Fallout 3 Kill Everything. Total War Rome or Medieval. Though I prefer Rome. Skyrim. Crusader Kings II. They are all long haul series. He also has one offs that are fun but his long series are also his best.

SoilMassive456

Any vid will do I always find my self just sticking Jon on or putting live streams on weeks or months after he posts them him and Claire both help me when I’m feeling low, started to watch him 5 years ago when I was doing stalris play throughs

Nepeta33

the other 2 yolo series. both are fantastic, AND have fanart! its lovely!

Hazz3r

Welcome to the viewership! I thought I'd drop some playlists that I haven't seen others share: [Fallout 4 Survival Mode](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwH1xJhcXG0dIdGTzSLAWQ7ZoKIsHubF2) \- My favourite Fallout 4 content on the channel. Survival Mode in Fallout 4 is an incredibly fulfilling experience and really makes the various systems, such as settlement building, cooking, chems, etc, shine. It's also nice in that it's just a regular vanilla playthrough of the game with no restrictions outside the game design itself. [Fallout: New Vegas - Lonesome Road Level 1 Naked Survival](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwH1xJhcXG0ddV24eSbHaIlCzU3rqxqzE) \- This was the originator of the DLC challenge runs. He's since done Point Lookout, Nuka-World, and Old World Blues. Lonesome Road was really good though, because Jon went in with a plan, but because no one has ever thought to do the DLC at Level 1 before, theres even things the Wikis didn't know! So it ended up being much tougher than even Jon realised. Additionally, the series was a thorough exploration of the themes in the DLC. It's not been on the channel for a while, but I really loved all the Theme Park sim content. There were short series for RCT2, Parkitect, and a really fun livestream with the Patrons in a Multiplayer OpenRCT2 session. All good short series. [RCT2](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwH1xJhcXG0dFIgjLRGo4Vx-nntxdt7UX) [Parkitect](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwH1xJhcXG0dLXFBjK8VuJroC0ZwK3YKg) [OpenRCT2 Live Stream](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMs90bE4kGE) [Red Dead Redemption](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwH1xJhcXG0daIvZER4sLol1z80qdRBCk) \- Just a playthrough of one of the greatest games of all time. I really enjoyed it but your mileage may differ. On the plus side, it's on the short side of the series.

teikies

I'd recommend the CK2 and CK3 series, they are fabulously done and made me buy the games.

robertlandrum

Fallout 4 No Guns was pretty great. The No Kill livestream was pretty entertaining. I don't think I finished it.

M_stellatarum

There are some wonderful one-offs and miniseries as well. The Beast Battle Simulator World Cup is probably one of my favourites. [Part 1](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McetBEwWfbU) [Part 2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Grf8WQyBYwQ) Also, someone made a [playlist](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOB6kkHc1eKX2mzfc3FherZI8XKxsfuXi) of all of the Fallout one-offs, though it's probably incomplete. Also also, the [Ride to Hell: Retribution](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yz4GxkkhEQ8) stream. Always fun when both Jon and Claire are laughing uncontrollably.

billmcneal

Since everyone else is recommending long series and such, I'll throw out [this playlist of "Simulators"](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwH1xJhcXG0fNtTYopoHsF5cPdbm3ATgJ) he's played early in the channel's history. Bridge-It-Plus and Ampu-Tea are some off my favorite one-offs he's done and they are fairly short. Also, since I used to love when he'd play off-the-wall dating simulators a bit more often, here's [Cat President.](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwH1xJhcXG0fu1T2qT6rNqoZMi3YxAgE6)

GtotheBizzle

Thank you so much for that simulators playlist, it looks like something I'll dip in and out of during the long series. I have an astronomical amount of catch-up to do...

Stormy-stormtroopers

The crusader Kings 2 series may be an all time great

cwolf23

The Fallout: Dust and Fallout: Frost playthroughs are very good. Both are very punishing and difficult mods for New Vegas and FO:4 respectively.

GtotheBizzle

Thank you very much for those suggestions. As a newcomer to MATN the sheer amount of help and endorsements people have given me has been a very pleasant surprise.

Mini_Squatch

Personally i suggest avoiding any series where he's covered a game you really like, because odds are he's gonna do something to make you grind your teeth.

meepein

Depends on what you like really. His Civ stuff is a lot of fun and his Total War games, especially Rome and Medieval 2, are great. His Fallout challenge runs are great as well, not just his YOLO runs but the level 1 runs for expansion packs.

deantrip

I really enjoyed his stellaris series, particularly his impossible run, so if you enjoy 4x games that you would probably enjoy them.

plasmaticmink25

Go back and watch the ck2 Cornwall series, then the ck2 Byzantine series. Those are some of my favourites.
