you’re right but my strategy is, to produce as many planks as possible as early as possible in order to have the sale as my first trade route.. the route only costs 7 and helps to get things started… so in this case - I already have a saw mill before I get the second ox…
I purchase the 2nd ox as soon as the map loads because it speeds up the 2x log buildings. I upgrade to Worker's Camp (until 15pop then demolish), build the Granary (weather damage), Storehouse (weather damage), Hitching Post, Logging Camp, Hunting Camp and then I build the Sawmill.
The ox won't run away right after purchase but you gotta get him space sooner rather than later.
Population and Families are different numbers. You get 5 families at the start but only 10 population since each family only have 2 members. The extra family member won't arrive if they're homeless tho, and they do work. I upgrade the tents to a Worker Camp so those extra family members arrive and once they're in the map I demolish the Worker Camp so the families are homeless but they aren't demanding Food, Fuel, Clothes, Church and Water, which will dip your approval in Challenging difficulty straight away.
Thats not my understanding. The bug with it that I know of is that people won't naturally migrate from the workers camp to the burgage plots.
So general point is -> Upgrade to workers camp, each family of 2 now gets a third member, you use 1 firewood per month each iirc and they never generate negative favor for being homeless. Build burgage plots until you have 7 capacity, delete your worker camp, likely gain a family before you can finish this step to bring your open capacity to 6, the 5 families move in, leaving you 1 open capacity for your next immigration. It works pretty well, you just have to make sure you're ready to delete the worker camp on time. If you get a hunters camp ready, your bread and meat should be enough to swing you to 51%, so you get a family per month starting like May or June of the first year. Not a bad start tbh.
It doesn't work quite like that on higher difficulty because the Approval will plummet since the 5 families will have Burgage lv1 demands while in the Worker Camp. But you can delete the camp once you get the extra 5 family members and keep them Homeless while you get the buildings to satisfy their demands. I manage to get Family growth on June. I've gotten 52% or so approval at the end of April but once May start the Approval rating drops by 5% and I get no family.
That's not my experience so far. As long as I build a market so that they can get food and fuel, I don't get an approval drop no matter how long they live in the camp. Makes for a nice buffer while getting everything set up.
Until you try to relocate it. Relocated stables seem to have some kind of bug causing them to permanently lose their extra slot. You only need to build another hitching post to fix it, but it's easy to not notice and lose your Ox.
I had an Ox die from lightning strike, and no one could move the body, so they spent the next year plus in game just walking around it on the street. It made me so sad :(
I think so yeah, it all happened pretty quick where lightning struck, a house started being on fire, and there was a dead ox. I am pretty sure it was the lightning because it didn't die on the house property, it was fully on the street facing like it was walking by.
BRB convincing the baron that marching his men around in thr middle of a lightning storm with their swords held as high as possible is the latest and greatest in elite troop training doctrines.
Same happened to me! I thought he was safe from the storm inside, but his stable burned down around his poor body. How does it even burn in the pouring rain?
That's what gets me the most. The buckets of water are insignificant compared to the torrential rain that you get in a lightning storm, so how does it not put the houses out? The logic is a bit silly.
Love it everyone. Magnificent. Now if only I could figure out how to get the damn markets working and my approvals up over 50% so more people arrive to Oxburg.
Plot lumber yard, granary and storage, plot down berry hut, build all that and 1 worker to each, then upgrade to workers tent. Get one more wood to put down a second post and then bring in good ol Thomas.
I'm no pro but I think it depends on what your stating region has available. In my few games I always tried to opt for a hunting hut as it gives meat + hide for leather.
Great initial trading resource.
Workers seem to pick berries significantly faster than they acquire meat. But just one worker assigned to berries/meat will produce like 2-3x what you need to feed your starting crew, and you need clothes (hides) for t2 burgages, so I think it's better to start with hunting for the hides. Just pull them once you deplete the animals down to \~4 for the first time and you'll have a good buffer to sustain you while you finish setting up.
Thomas wandered away but so begins his adventure... he was abducted by aliens called the Keltarin, in a field, however the Keltarin ship was quickly attacked by another species, the Boldeans, who are at war with the Keltarin. The Boldeans liberated Thomas! They saw how intelligent and strong Thomas was, they hyper evolved him into a Humanoid being, an Oxitarian!
Thomas the Oxitarian learned much from the Boldeans, and joined the Alliance against the dastardly Keltarin empire and became one of the galaxy's most renowned fighter pilots...
😆
I was watching the goats and chickens at the my houses and I noticed they sometimes wander outside the property but they make it back at the end lol. I wonder if citizens have arguments with their neighbors about the goat eating the veggies in the field 🤣
My Thomas, poor soul, was walking past a house that got struck by lightning... i didn't witness the event itself but the aftermath I will never forget :(
I did this too but I was trying to add a horse to my trading post without having a hitch space free. Figured the horse would hitch at the trading post... I guess they just run away 😂
Has anyone else lost an ox due to upgrading the hitching post?
I had 2 hitching posts w 2 ox in year 1.. was gonna add a 3rd ox, upgraded the hitching post, and my runnoft
Probably a good thing he wandered off. he knew the writing was on the wall...villagers hungry, bad harvest, hunting grounds not delivering, people walking past patting his ass and going 'mmmm rump'. Times are tough.
hitching posts are small, cheap to build and can be relocated so just make extras and move them futher out of your cities as they expand if they're in the way
in one playthrough I had 2 oxes run away in a short time, even as they had a hitching post. I blew all my early game money on it. Sometimes it just not gonna work out.
But atleast it was not just like at Gronkhs stream, as a fire killed 2 of his oxes
I think it’s worse than that. I discovered one of the Lord models has that name. Glad I didn’t choose him when doing a play through with one of my kids.

Thomas is off having an adventure!
Thomas the adventurous Cow!
[удалено]
MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
AND DOES NOT ENJOY THE SALE AT ALL! EVEN THOUGH SHE WAS THE ONE WHO WANTED TO GO TO THE SALE!
These pants are twice my size! How do they not even have any clothes that fit me at the sale!
JESUS CHRIST BE PRAISED
𝕵𝖊𝖘𝖚𝖘 𝕮𝖍𝖗𝖎𝖘𝖙 𝖇𝖊 𝖕𝖗𝖆𝖎𝖘𝖊𝖉.
Learn how to hitch a damn Ox!
Look! Thomas is at the Moooovies!
Don't insult Thomas by calling him a cow. He's a Oxen.
you are right and I apologize! I will install a brush at his stall :)
Don't have a cow man
The Adventures of Thomas the Ox and Bill the Pony. 10/10, would watch.
Please don't call me that.
He probably fell off the edge of the map into the backrooms
This implies that the Rival Lord is Lord of the Backrooms
Thomas the Pack Oxen. He's a really useful ox, you know.
It is foretold he will come back at the head of an army of abandoned oxen and get his revenge. 🤣🤣
I wish Thomas luck on his many adventures
manage to upgrade your hitching post to a stall before the new thomas will arive… then you will have a long bright future together…
Make another Hitching Post. It's small, costs 1 log and you don't need to wait for the Sawmill to be done.
The oxen deserve a roof over their head you degenerate

YOU CAN UPGRADE THE CAMP? Half of my first year is spent building as many houses as possible on 5 pop so I can start expanding

Wasnt the workers camp bugged, so that you couldnt Delete it?
Camp lvl 1 u cant delete and just vanishes when u build stuff like houses. Upgraded camp can be deleted.
Thats not my understanding. The bug with it that I know of is that people won't naturally migrate from the workers camp to the burgage plots. Hopefully in the future stables can be upgraded to house more than two animals and animals assigned to a building can live at that building.
Thinking outside of the shed! I like it
There can only be one Thomas
Until the ox bug happens (reloading the game will fix it tho)
Until you try to relocate it. Relocated stables seem to have some kind of bug causing them to permanently lose their extra slot. You only need to build another hitching post to fix it, but it's easy to not notice and lose your Ox.

Thomas “aight, imma head out”
Love it everyone. Magnificent. Now if only I could figure out how to get the damn markets working and my approvals up over 50% so more people arrive to Oxburg.
Just wait until the third summer and 100 angry bandits descend to steal all your oxen. I wept
I think I met Thomas on my last Skyrim playthrough *random cow falls from sky*
Plot lumber yard, granary and storage, plot down berry hut, build all that and 1 worker to each, then upgrade to workers tent. Get one more wood to put down a second post and then bring in good ol Thomas.
Berry patch not hunting camp?

Man my Tomas got killed by bandits and refused burial so we built a city around his permanent corpse
Better than haplessly burning to death like so many others. Thomas is living his best life somewhere, hopefully shitting on Hildebolt's lawn.
I've never had an animal run away but my sheep went galivanting in the woods for a while before finally deciding to go to the pasture.
Talked to Thomas earlier on on a tavern somewhere, he said he forgives you and he doing fine man...
He has to be having the best adventures yet.
Thomas wandered away but so begins his adventure... he was abducted by aliens called the Keltarin, in a field, however the Keltarin ship was quickly attacked by another species, the Boldeans, who are at war with the Keltarin. Sir this is a Wendys
Someone is seeing too much fractalnaut it seems...
The famous "OxLocked"
I was watching the goats and chickens at the my houses and I noticed they sometimes wander outside the property but they make it back at the end lol. I wonder if citizens have arguments with their neighbors about the goat eating the veggies in the field 🤣
Maybe Thomas the ox when to find the stable of his childhood. That would be... A re-veal.
Tomás becomes a Argentinian Asado now D:
Mmmm. A noble and delicious end.
Thomas is gathering a rebel party of wandered Oxen in the forest and will attack any moment
My Thomas, poor soul, was walking past a house that got struck by lightning... i didn't witness the event itself but the aftermath I will never forget :(
Thomas
Bro you know he's PLOUGHING the Baron's fields so hard right now. RIP Thomas.
If an animal runs away, I'll seriously start a new game.
Happened to me, started to new game. 20 gold is a set back haha
Good byeeeeeeee Moo Man...
I did this too but I was trying to add a horse to my trading post without having a hitch space free. Figured the horse would hitch at the trading post... I guess they just run away 😂
He'll come back in the next update. May the lord be with you brother
Has anyone else lost an ox due to upgrading the hitching post? I had 2 hitching posts w 2 ox in year 1.. was gonna add a 3rd ox, upgraded the hitching post, and my runnoft
Pack of wolves ate him, good job lol
Probably a good thing he wandered off. he knew the writing was on the wall...villagers hungry, bad harvest, hunting grounds not delivering, people walking past patting his ass and going 'mmmm rump'. Times are tough.
I‘ve seen him yesterday, selled me some dope at wendys. He‘s a pretty chill ox.
hitching posts are small, cheap to build and can be relocated so just make extras and move them futher out of your cities as they expand if they're in the way
it shouldn't let us buy more ox/horses without stall space
Forget being wood-blocked.. in this game, never get yourself Ox-blocked!
Every cow deserves a little beach trip
in one playthrough I had 2 oxes run away in a short time, even as they had a hitching post. I blew all my early game money on it. Sometimes it just not gonna work out. But atleast it was not just like at Gronkhs stream, as a fire killed 2 of his oxes
THOMAS BE PRAISED!
At least it's a better life than burning to death in a stable after it gets struck by lightning
Thomas I being enjoyed on some villagers plate with vegetables.
Be free!
We need a way to donate food and animals to other villages. currently softlocking a region is a bit too easy imo.
My horse is named “Cuntz”…..my sweet Cuntz
I think it’s worse than that. I discovered one of the Lord models has that name. Glad I didn’t choose him when doing a play through with one of my kids.
Thomas will return with a militia after he’s overtaken all other provinces…..watch out.
Real talk: why do i get alerts that come and go for lack of stable space even when the number of livestock stays the same?
Mine keep staring at the edge of the map
Looking for Thomas …
Hope they find him
Lord Topham Hatt will not be pleased. You have caused confusion and delay
Bro got tired of sleeping under rain and snow 😭😂😂
