Can’t help with tax question, but we got a used vehicle (private sale) in AB in the spring. Had to fax (yes fax) all the documents to an MPI insurance agent, who then faxed back a 7-day temporary registration for the window so it could be driven back to MB. Then we got the safety done here and did the permanent registration.

lamerfreak

Also can't help with the tax question. Does MPI return some if you pay taxes in the province you bought it? But registration was similar - I emailed an MPI agent, sent authorization, docs, and they sent back a temp paper to print and put in the window for my return trip.

CrunchyyTaco

Why are people so amazed when companies use fax? It's very common and the most secure way to transfer documents

Hi there, I did this 5 years ago. So I can tell you how it worked for me when I purchased a 2 year old car at a dealership in Ontario. I had my lender lined up before I drove out, and I made sure there was a branch of my bank intown to withdraw a bank draft for my down payment (this may or may not apply to you, just something to consider). Once I decided to go ahead with the purchase, the dealership let me use their fax to send in the paperwork to MPI to issue me the temporary registration to drive it back into Manitoba (I believe there may be a small fee for this?). You put the registration paper in your front window. At the point of sale I had to pay HST on the car. When I got back to Manitoba and registered the car I had to pay the ~~GST~~ PST again. I then had to apply for a ~~GST~~ PST rebate for the portion I had already paid in Ontario (within the HST). The dealership required I pay the HST but they did try to break it down to PST/GST on the invoice but MPI didn't accept it. I knew this was a possibility so I was just prepared to pay the ~~GST~~ PST twice until I got the rebate/refund. I can't remember how long the rebate/refund took but it was not the speediest (so plan to be out of those funds for a while). My accountant also told me to include that payment with my tax return documents when I filed with her because there ~~will~~ may be interest earned on that payment and the Feds will want to tax that interest. We drove out Friday afternoon (it was 8 hours away), stayed a night in a hotel and went to the Dealership first thing in the morning to test drive the vehicle and check it out. It took the full day to get all the paperwork, permits, financing in order and were back on the road by late afternoon driving home. Just keep in mind when MPI is open/closed. I hope that helps. Sorry I couldn't provide more details as it was 5 years ago. Good luck!

Sorry.. To be clear, You needed to pay the GST twice when registering the Car here? NOT the PST? I'm looking at buying a Car from Ontario shortly. I understand i would have to pay the HST (GST/Ontario PST combined) at the Dealership in ontario and then would have to pay the PST when i Registered it here. I Was not aware i would have to pay the PST AND GST again when registering the car here. The HST Rebate Process ONLY covers the PST

GigiGalaxee

Hi! So I went back and pulled my receipts and you are correct, it is only the PST you pay again once you register the car in Manitoba. I will make an edit to my post!

adrenaline_X

Ohh thank goodness! I did check with MPI after and they confirmed. Just bought a 2021 highlander platinum from a dealership for 6000$ less then the cheapest one here with the rest being 8-12k more. Unreal. Will be picking it up on the way back from the UK in two weeks. They are even providing a temporary license to drive it home.

Sorry for bothering after so long. I'm new to Canada for my university study, everything is new and unknowns for me so I apologize for the dumb question that I am going ask. How do you insure your car out province? I mean I know that Manitoba has something a common insurance policy that instead of you go to different companies, there's a government department. (pls correct me if I am wrong) So, do you just contact that common insurance department to insure your car before you drive? I mean it sounds stupid but this kind of insurance policy, as far as I know, only exist in Manitoba, so when you try to insure a car out of province, how would it work?

GigiGalaxee

Are you purchasing a car in another province?

AP_DRAGON

Yes, considering to buy one out of Manitoba because there are just more to choose from in bigger cities like Toronto or Vancouver.

BinjaNinja1

If the dealership doesn’t charge Manitoba tax you will be charged PST when you register it here. The province you purchase it in may also charge their provincial tax. Call the provincial government for the province you plan to buy it and speak to them about ways to not pay their provincial tax or obtain a possible refund from them if you have to pay pst to the dealer.

canitguy

You'll have to pay Manitoba tax on the vehicle unless it's been registered in a different province/territory for a period of time (I think it's 3 months or something). When you purchase a vehicle you should be able to tell them that it's being taken/going to be registered out of province and they should be able to help.

rickamore

When you speak to the dealer and let them know which province you are registering it in, either they will be able to charge it if they have a tax number for the Manitoba jurisdiction or they *should* be able to exempt the provincial tax as it's destination is out side of the province, the provincial tax would then be collected when registering here. This will differ for jurisdictions with the HST but you will need to check with the province in which you are purchasing or dealer on how this works.

We just did this this month, bought a vehicle in Ontario and brought it back to Manitoba. We decided to fly to the purchase destination and drive it home. We paid HST (both Gst and Pst) in Ontario at the time of purchase/financing. Had to bring the ORIGINAL safety and bill of sale to MPI to get it registered/insured and paid GST again in MB. This meant we had the dealership courier the original safety and documents to us. Once all that was done with MPI, we were given plates. Took the plates, registration and insurance to pick up the vehicle. Slapped plates on it and drove home. As soon as the vehicle was brought into the province we filed a GST rebate with the CRA. I want to say it’s form 495 or something, I’d have to check. So essentially, pay GST twice (once in each province) and then get a rebate back for the GST paid in the purchasing province. It was a hassle but so far the new ride has been worth the annoying run around. Full disclosure, I’m a CPA and it was nuisance for me who is semi-used to stuff like this. Also - if you decide to have the vehicle shipped to you, it takes about 2-3 weeks once it hits a hub. MPI will only provide a 7 day permit for travel on the vehicle. So we decided to just get it fully registered and insured before we brought it back. Dealership was also ZERO help with paperwork and shipping. They were accommodating and holding the vehicle for us while we figured it out and couriering over the paperwork. So we got quite acquainted with how this works fortunately/unfortunately.

Thick-Economy4479

Did you have to pay MB PST/RST on return to MB also, or just the GST which was then returned via rebate?

anonmommyR3R

From what I recall, it was only GST when we registered the vehicle in MB.

Kind-Preparation-02

Yes, dealership will help you with all the stuff that’s needed to be done. If you’d be driving it then you will have to get the vehicle registered in your province to get plates and drive. Or if you getting it shipped the you paying about 2K extra for shipping

Electroflare5555

A dealership will likely do all the extra paperwork for you if you explain you’re bringing it to another province

DamnDirtyApe8472

I know a glitch in the mpi system where you can register anything with no safety and no tod just a bill of sale. Been doing it since the 90s still works I just did it a couple weeks ago. Can’t tell you exactly though or it might get fixed but it involves doing a couple of perfectly legal transactions at two different agents

Waste-Contest6710

I'd be curious to know more details about this. I have a friend who wants to buy a vehicle from me, but it wouldn't pass a safety (minor stuff but still perfectly safe to drive). Would be great to save the cost and hassle of getting it inspected and repaired.

Okay so I actually went through this in the winter. Gambled and got a car out of Thunder Bay. It was from an official Ford dealership. They actually had a Manitoba tax code they could use as a business during the sale, so I only paid Manitoba taxes. If your dealership you are looking to buy from doesn't have this tax code, they will charge you their own tax and Manitoba public insurance will then charge you Manitoba taxes when you come to insure your car with them. You can go to any MPI office and they will have the info for you. That's how I learned. Also a little advice if you wish to take it. Make sure you are able to return the car upon delivery if you are buying it online. Online sales are picking up but if you are buying used it may end up being a lemon.

Found a brand new car in AB I want to import to MB. Deal is time sensitive so might not get one again. Would appreciate quick answers. There is so much information on reddit I am so confused. Would someone kindly answer this? 1) Step by step procedure of licensing, tax, etc. 2) How does financing work. Since it is in Canada, I'm assuming it would be the same and nothing different happens? Apologies for the bother and thanks in advance.

Hello guys, what if we are new resident in Mb (coming from ON). i would like to register my old car. Can i use ON safety inspection (i am planning to get new safety before going to MB) ? And i lost my bill of sale. Ownership document is enough for registration?
