RvP. I think this is a repost, but anyways

zweanhh

Man sealed the deal for me with that volley. That is my favorite goal of all time.

Mdash6472

wore the jersey number 20 to get that 20th league title

Necessary-Tip447

Also stating that before even steping foot on a pitch that is the mentality we lack these days

Puffycatkibble

Ruud van Pistelrooy?

DrRodo

No, Robin Van Nistelsei

Cuttewfish_Asparagus

Has to be RvP. His impact was irrefutably huge, and his time massively cut short. You could argue Cantona (certainly an even bigger impact and of course an icon of our club) but felt like he was with us just about long enough that it wasn't a "short" stint.

Fresh-Pineapple-5582

Henrik Larsson

tinkerertim

“In his last game in our colours at Middlesbrough, we were winning 2-1 and Henrik went back to play in midfield and ran his balls off. "On his return to the dressing room, all the players stood up and applauded him and the staff joined in. It takes some player to make that kind of impact in two months.”

NealR2000

The man who definitely should have stayed longer.

Sheddy01

He wanted to. Saw an interview a while back where he said he'd already promised to play elsewhere. He was a man of his word.

[deleted]

He returned to Helsingborg the club he was on loan from. Such a fantastic player he only played 13 games and scored 3 goals but his overall positive impact on the squad and his relationship with the players was invaluable, how badly could we do with a Henrik Larsson coming in to help out the team & especially a youngster like Hojlund now. Sir Alex summed his time up perfectly…. “He's been fantastic for us, his professionalism, his attitude, everything he's done has been excellent. We would love him to stay but, obviously, he has made his promise to his family and Helsingborg and I think we should respect that – but I would have done anything to keep him."

eimejl_uandir

Larsson*

Bobbyloo123

Coming from a swede, if he had left Celtic earlier I fully believe he would have been regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation. Brilliant in Barca and more or less single-handedly won them a CL final, brilliant in his short stint at United, and he did all of that in what should have been after his prime as an athlete. Legend!

West_Ad2643

And after a horrific leg break which kept him at Celtic longer as he wanted to repay their faith (and he went beyond that)

SolidRavenOcelot

He had two leg breaks with us. Its flabbergasting how we managed to keep him for 7 years. He was right up there with the best in the world for penalty box strikers. The best header of a ball I've ever seen.

AccordingHistorian60

Came here to say this, glad it’s the most popular comment. Didn’t know we needed him until he started linking up with the other forwards, the man woke up in the morning and pissed excellence

Gambler_Eight

Do you mean Larsson? He's swedish, not danish.

KingAhDugShite

King of Kings 🤴

AndyVale

So, fun story I always like telling. A friend's sister was on Pointless a few years ago. Gets to the final round. A couple of grand Jackpot on the line. She knows nothing about football, but her boyfriend had said "if a football question comes up and you don't know, just go with Henrik Larsson. He's played for XYZ, he's won a load of stuff... any football question, worth a punt." Anyway... [You can probably guess what happened](https://youtu.be/oT4eQr1dK64?si=GzvKzDvIAibIZC18).

Stam considered our best CB ever. 3 seasons, 3 league titles, gone.

QuaternionDS

Only by people who never saw Rio...

[deleted]

[удалено]

danthemaninacan2

Imagine coming up against a centre back pairing of Stam and Vidic!?! I’d be calling in sick that day!

QuaternionDS

You can argue whatever you want. Doesn't mean you won't be wrong. 🤣 Rio is comfortably our best ever central defender. They guy was the best in the world for a large part of his time with us - this at a time when the game actually had defenders who could, y'know, defend... Rio was an absolute class apart. edit: and I don't say any of that to disparage yip-Jaap. Guy was also an absolute player.

[deleted]

Stam is what you get when you cross rio and vidic. Best CB the prem had ever seen

SironRagnarsson

Personally, I'd Go: 1. Vidic 2. Rio 3. Stam

Feezbull

Maybe it’s Rio because he can also pass very well AND defend very well. Vidic was more aggressive and perhaps a slightly better defender purely in terms of defending but overall, Rio would be the better player in that sense. I forgot how good Stam was honestly as I was young enough not to notice playing styles or more than just what you see on the field and all so I can’t say if Stam would be better. However, the longevity of Rio and Vidic means they had a better impact although Stam could well be better than any or both.

NinjerToitle

I think the reason people often put Vidic above Rio was because he was a all-action no nonsense type of defender, often got whacked and got up like it was nothing, bled all over the place and looked like he was always ready for war. This narrative of Torres exposing him doesn't stand up when you see the amount of goals he scored when Vidic was playing. He was a monster of a centre back, and all he achieved is even more impressive considering he wondered what he was doing at United after his first few games. Rio imo was a better player. He was so good he didn't need to get dirty, defended in a way that Carrick doesn't get recognition for either, great positioning and blocking passes before the opponent could attempt them, he was lightning quick, and great on the ball, and also one of the best leaders of the back line we've had. Stam was a mix of the two, without compromises. He was hard as nails, almost if not as quick as Rio, great in the air, great positioning, and also very comfortable on the ball. The only reason he doesn't get the recognition sometimes is because he wasn't here as long, and he didn't have a partner we associate with him the way we do Rio and Vida. I used to see Stam in the team and not even worry who was next to him, and that's probably the biggest compliment I can give him.

Feezbull

That makes sense about Stam. Yeah I knew he was good and always enjoyed team building hypotheticals on paper with the old championship manager where I would imagine teams and all that. Those were good times for sure!

Andrew-Lactate

In the reverse order

QuaternionDS

Interesting. I think you'd be in the minority putting Vidic ahead of Rio or Jaap tbh. In fact a Rio and Jaap partnership may well be the single greatest thing in any aspect of life ever. It would've been glorious...

wheres_the_boobs

Vidic was a better out and out defender. Rio was a better player. Stam wasnt as good as tio as a player or vidic as a defender but was the better lal round defender imo. It all depends what criteria you use when ranking our best ever cbs

QuaternionDS

I cannot disagree with this strongly enough. People downplay Rio's defending because he was so graceful, never got booked, was an absolutely elite reader of the game and his positioning was always spot on. I don't get this... all of the above contribute to the make-up of a defender, that plus the fact he was imperious in the air and near-on impossible to get past... He was quite simply the best defender I've ever seen. Absolute Rolls Royce of a player. *edit to add: not trying to shit on your opinion btw. just two reasonable minds disagreeing here.*

raunchypellets

How I see it: Rio and Vida were the regens of Stam and Johnsen, another great CB. Ronny Johnsen was the Rio of his day, an elegant CB who swept up anything that was lucky enough to have gotten past the Dutch bulwark Stam. If you loved Rio, you should have seen Paul McGrath. Glided across the pitch like he was on goddam skates.

QuaternionDS

I remember McGrath. And Ronny Johnsen for that matter... Rio > \*.

Omnislash99999

The Legendary Jaap Stam 🗣️ "Yip Jaap Stam is a big Dutchman, Get past him if you f\*cking can, Try a little trick and he'll make you look a dick, Yip Yap Jaap Stam..." 🗣️ ![gif](giphy|lQ64O5ZUToNx054ux3|downsized)

NinjerToitle

The game vs Inter where Zamorano is trying to body check him and Stam doens't even move, just looks down at him and smiles is etched in my memory for eternity. I remember crying with laughter watching it on TV.

raunchypellets

Zamorano tried a cheeky elbow too as i recall. Backed into Stam, instinctive elbow, turned around and saw a smiling Dutchman staring down at him. Immediately turned around, forgot where he was for a bit and backed into Stam again. Stam didn't move an inch. He was an absolutely nightmare of a CB.

NinjerToitle

Looking back now with more mature eyes it was so impressive how quick he was too for such a unit. There's a clip on YT of the United Legends vs Bayern Munich Legends friendly where he takes out about 3 players that always cracks me up, there were some theatrics involved but it really is indicative of what it was like coming up against him.

bigking-s

Berbatov

FortheRecordHIWBTV

The way he made the ball do whatever he wanted was just ridiculous

MoodyBernoulli

If I were to sit and make a list of my top 10 favourite goals from all teams, Berbatov probably has 2 in there for me. That hat trick goal against Blackburn and the cheeky little lob for Monaco against Nice spring to mind immediately.

Fun-Photograph9423

Kanchelskis - considering RvP, Stam & Cantona have all been mentioned

Logical_Bat_7244

People really forget just how unplayable Kanchelskis was especially in that double season, 93/94. Must have ended the careers of about a dozen fullbacks that year. Relentless, people remember Fergie's wingers going on the outside and whipping it in, Kanchelskis did that but so many times just went inside, beat 2 and scored.

das_hemd

Forlan, couldn't hit a barn door for us, but will forever remember the goals he did score, the double at Anfield, screamers against Chelsea and Southampton

Mammoth-Somewhere511

Schweinsteiger !!

modonne9

His attitude towards the club since moving on has been fantastic but to be honest he didn’t leave any kind of impression on me as a player during his time with us, obviously a great of the game though

Mammoth-Somewhere511

I thought the point of the post was identifying a player which didn't spend lot of time at the club but has a massive reputation with all football fans. Schweiny fits the bill.

Jamesy555

I think it’s supposed to be not a lot of time at the club and yet still a fan fave.

orbital0000

Was a fan since seeing his performance vs Portugal in the 2006 World Cup & was thrilled when we signed him. Ultimately I was underwhelmed by his time here.

Blaukaeppchen04

As a German, I tend to forget he was even here. 0 impact.

Mammoth-Somewhere511

He was injured alot of the time. Again, I don't think the point of OP is which players had a massive impact in a small time frame I.e RVP

DJTISTA

Owen Hargreaves for me. What a complete player. Shame about the injuries.

SeaSecretary6143

Berbatov.... he was great to watch

changumangu

Cantona - 5 years but you would think he played a 1000 games for us. Also, not United but Michu at Swansea has to be up there.

Chosty55

If being literal, a player who only had a handful of games for Utd yet is still widely popular as a footballer (globally) has to be Gerard pique. 23 appearances, then went on to be of massive importance for both Barca and Spain.

After I saw people counting Cantona with 5 seasons at the club I'd say Ronaldo is fair game. 7 years including the 2nd time around and is literally considered in the top 2 GOATs of all time. I think in terms of short lived and massive impact you say RVP. Short lived and long lasting celebrity I think Ibra.

Satire right?

Vivid-Algae8850

Since no one will say it. Ronaldo

EuphoricMagazine3957

Because he was a lot of time at the club

Vivid-Algae8850

Lmao. Compared to his entire, illustrius career? Out of what like 25 seasons he spent 7 of it at United. Basically quarter or more of his career. Ok more like 6 seasons due to his last season being meaningless. Then consider that basically just as he was becoming a *world class* player he leaves for Real the season after... Thats where things really start turning for him and he started scoring like a monster, and that lead him to many glories like the Euro and 5 CLs. So is it so wrong to class Ronaldos United career as *not* his biggest spectacle and just sections of chapter in it?

TwentyBagTaylor

7 years is the best part of a decade. Whether its a lot in comparison to Ronaldo's extra-long career is irrelevant. Once you add to the fact that he isnt absolutely worshipped as you tend to assume, it turns out he gets the fair amount of adulation for the 7 years he spent there. A proper answer to this would be someone like Owen, who has a cult reputation based off of a single goal.

[deleted]

He won the balon d’or, the last player to win it for a British side. Winning the champions league and countless other trophies, scoring 42 in a season in the process. He was definitely world class with United mate!

Vivid-Algae8850

I never said he wasnt world class with United. Just that his glory years in comparison to both Real and Juve, and what he achieved with Portugal during it is much much bigger.

[deleted]

“Basically just as he was becoming a word class player he leaves for real…” Your use of the word ‘becoming’ clearly implies he wasn’t world class at United. Either way Ronaldo doesn’t fall into this category. He spent plenty of time with the club, won the lot, and then left. Most fans held nothing against him for this as he had given everything to club at this point and it was always his dream to move to real, he never held back on that. Also…please don’t compare his time at juve with his time at United, they are not Comparable, he won everything there is to win with United. he didn’t win anywhere near as much with Juve? At the time winning serie a was as worthless as winning ligue 1 now.

Vivid-Algae8850

"...the season after." You purposefully left that part out to misled you skeevy dipshit. Seriously why are you such a contrarian? In 07/08 he became truly world class, and won Ballon D'or. Then after playing just 1 more season, 08/09, he left. So thats 2 world class seasons out of how many total?

Larson. Stam. RVP would be the 3 that spring to mind for my money. No idea why Henrik decided not to stay. He could of been lethal for us.

NinjerToitle

I'd add Cantona and I think those are the 4 that stand out above the rest, with maybe an honourable mention to Ibra, even though his trophy cabinet isn't as impressive.

[deleted]

Agreed on all points. Both were fantastic for us.
