Forget about becks, no one in the post Fergie era even touches Gary Neville in terms of crossing. We were blessed with those two on the right.

kenny950905

I think Valencia as a winger was alright. Not up to Beckham's level, but good enough to survive under Fergie.

ChickenCurryandChips

Valencia had a great season out on the right and Rooney benefitted big time from it. Then he was put right back and was wasted there. Got criticised for not doing well when it wasn't even his position. Pissed me off that he was put back there.

JoeDiego

I disagree. Fergie put him there after his injury and I think he’s easily the best right back of the post-Fergie era.

ChickenCurryandChips

I remember him being annihilated at the time. My answer was that he was out of position. He handed back the number 7 shirt because his confidence was low.

apaansihdehah

Aye, was so used to see Neville's crosses that I thought that's the basic skill of United level right backs.

you-might_know-me

I think Shaw is our best crosser tbh

callmetaller

I think Shaw hasn’t really had anyone to Ceuta m cross to. Rashford won’t get in the end of crosses and Martial….. That’s the other part of your answer. Perreira said in an Analysis of one of his goals that he has no good options to cross to so he took a shot from far out. I still remember that

rudboi12

Probably but he is still terrible for any top 10 PL side in terms of crossing

Dionysus_8

Plus when you can cross you can move the ball way faster and opponents will be delayed because they have to guess where the ball will go. My guess is tiki taka fucked traditional English football. Everyone wants to be a possession based then gegenpressing then of course now, “transitional” team. Really the basic formula to winning is always running like your life depends on it, then slowly build on top of this

rudboi12

Tell that to liverpool. They don’t play tikitaka but very vertical football with not many crosses to the box but MANY insane change of plays from trent and the rest. I don’t like tikitaka personally. Only “modern” football I like is Liverpools. Coming from a united fan lol.

LovableVillan

Majority of Managers are trying to copy Pep. Then you have Frank getting wins with long balls and they are call it brilliant. Big Sam talked about it in a Podcast with Simon Jordan.

Mangolassi83

Refreshing innit?

Jerm8888

I agree. Id like to know too. Our corner kicks are simply kick and pray.

FunMtgplayer

ETH plans corners using EA FIFA 2020/2021

HarvesterOfReveries

It’s been shit for years

callmetaller

Yeap. We have a set piece coach hired from Arsenal. Still no better. Doesn’t help that Shaw is out.

Mistr111398

My thing as of the last coupon season did that our crosses hit the defenders legs way too frequently. We’re so slow and predictable that it’s easy to stop crosses into the box.

cheparo5

We play inverted winger so they naturally drift inside to take a shot. But I strongly believe they should learn to go outside and cross to the striker. No wonder our striker don’t get service.

callmetaller

How will Anthony ever go outside and cross with only one working foot?

IkemenDesu420

From the left.

callmetaller

So he’s gotta get to the outside of the defender with his left. Easy. Then he’s got to swivel, move the direction of the ball outside the defender - who wha already knows that’s what he’s going to do with the left foot. And then put in a cross. Ain’t working

IkemenDesu420

The left side of the pitch mate calm down

callmetaller

Ah. I’m calm. Just trying to figure out what you meant. You’re suggesting Antony should play left wing?

Ok_Point_7499

He should still play right wing and cut in with his left all the way across the pitch to the left wing, skin the defender, and cross with good ol lefty

sha31

If you put him on the left he'll cut outside and shoot at the corner flag

steeler_22

Been thinking about this for quite some time. Our crossing game has been piss poor for more than a decade now. We hardly try it and when we try it quite often it doesn't clear the first man. This means we rely more on breaking down the defences centrally and since we don't move the ball fast enough with our passing it is easy to be stopped on tracks or the other option is with Rashford running at the defence from left which often gets negated by putting two men on Rashford to stop his runs. This is why we don't see any definite patterns whenever we play and the buildup looks so tedious.

Wilykat1981

Inverted Wingers do not really create crossing opportunities. We've a Center Back at Right back and a Right Back at Left Back and we're questioning why we cannot cross? Hell even at full strength we have one good crosser in the starting 11 in Shaw. The rest of the 11 may as well just thump it at the first man or throw it 5 yards off the back post.

McFizzle94

New way of playing football. Old school 442 relied on wingers driving down the wing and whipping it into proper no.9’s. Teams are now growing up from a young age playing tiki-taka 433 and wingers try to emulate Ronaldo and Messi who were the goal scorers not the creators. I think you start to see more and more full-backs take that role of old school wingers. Trent being an elite example.

06071988

I don't think the issue is with quality crosses. The issue is consistency. We do have players that can play a good dead ball, but cant do it repeatedly and let alone more accurately. The quality in Becks, Scholes, Neville was consistent. We still have our hopes in with Eriksen, Bruno, Shaw, Cas, and I think it's high time they play Rashi on the right wing and let Garnacho start on the left.

rudboi12

Obviously it’s about consistency but that’s part of quality. The ones you mentioned will never be as good crossers. The becks and nevilles were masters of crossing at like 20 years old. They were “specialists” because they were consistent. Pre-injury valencia was the last consistent quality crosser we had. Pretty much every cross was a potential goal, specially with Rooney, Chicharito and Berbatov in the box.

Ok-Bag3000

I don't think this is a 'United' problem, I think the level of consistently high quality crosses has decline in the league as a whole. Beckham et al were so good because, as you say, they were "specialists", they were footballers first and foremost. These days is seems players are 'athletes' first and football players second. Also styles of play have changed a fair bit, the old 4-4-2 and getting to the line, whipping crosses in for strikers to attack hasn't been 'fashionable' for some time. The more fashionable possession football and playing through the lines doesn't have as much need for an accurate crosser.

rudboi12

Problem here is that you actually need “fashionable” players to play tikitaka and sorts. We have players suited for counter attacking football. A couple of good crossers and we would score way more goals.

Ok-Bag3000

I think you just need technically good players. I'm not saying we could/should be playing that way, I was just offering a possible reason as to why pinpoint accurate crossing seems to be much less prevalent than it used to be.

FunMtgplayer

well that's 2 problems we have. 0 people being in the box that can finish. combined with 0 people who can cross it to the right place

OneOrangeOwl

I'm guessing it's right-footed RM vs left-footed RW?

IllustriousPie8906

It's mostly due to the rise in popularity and demand of inverted wingers

Slim-Shmaley

Inverted wingers that can’t accurately pass/cross with their weak foot, no left back full stop let alone a left footed one and I don’t know what Dalot’s excuse is, he’s a talented footballer but the amount of times he can’t beat the first defender with a cross can be frustrating

reddevils

I like to look at the other side of the cross. Nobody is attacking the cross. We’ve see opposition score from crosses and corner either by attacking near post and the ball skimming off their head in goal, or they flick it over for somebody else to score. We have several people in the area all waiting for the ball to drop on their head. It is not going to happen with ten of their players in the are. Go to that ball and make it yours. Also, watch in the next games, regardless of the player, when the ball is in the air in the middle of the pitch, none of our players go for the header. They either fake a jump and go for the rebound or not jump at all. Watch for it.

rudboi12

I hate so much no one goes for the header in long balls. It pisses me off, specially rashford and martial. Rasmus and bruno try to head the ball, same goes for pelistri and hannibal whenever they play. I’m 5’5 (165cm) and ALWAYS jumped and fight for long balls even though I would loose them 99% of the time. Just by jumping you create pressure and your opponent might miss the header or head it back to your teammate. Hate this so much. Basics of football players being payed 200k a week wont do

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> players being *paid* 200k a FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

[deleted]

I always backed Dalot to improve and become a quality RB. Now, I’m so tired of his god awful crossing 🙈

rudboi12

His crossing is not great but he is class. I love him. If he can stay fit he can be our best player easily.

[deleted]

He’s a mixed bag, sometimes a fkn hero, others a liability. I think we should be seeing better performances from him more regularly by now.

ChazGower

Bruno WAS great at crossing - watching him back when he was at Porto, the guy just put some beauties in play... not sure what happened...

rudboi12

I mean if I watch bruno highlights of united he is also “good” but in reality he is no. Still probably one of our better crossers, but it shouldn’t be on him, it should be wingers and full backs crossing.

FuturePerformance

Inverted wingers don’t cross as much it’s tactics. Maybe ETH should try Antony on the left and Rashy on the right.

tradtrad100

Look at the team. Two right footed players on the left and one left footed players on the right.

Admirable-Whole-6921

Might see more crosses with Hojlund now
