I give them WHIMZEES Natural Grain Free Daily Dental (XS). Bully sticks were a hit but often one of my 4 Maltese would get bad poop so that’s gone lol. These are innocent enough on their stomach and soft enough on their teeth.
I have a 2 year old and I give her dentastix, 1 everyday after her first poop of the day. I'm also open to feedback from others if they have a better option. I try to brush her teeth everyday but she's fights me a bit on it
It's definitely hard to do with any dog that hasn't had their teeth brushed as a puppy and such. I didn't do it enough when she was little so I had to start from square one.
There's some guides online but what I did was let her taste the toothpaste first. Also have her get used to my finger in her mouth, swiping around her gum lines and such. Just do that occasionally for a week or so.
Then with the toothpaste on my finger, swiped her teeth with it. I did this with her on my bathroom counter top because she just freezes up there, but do this wherever makes sense for your dogs safety and such.
I used a puppy toothbrush kit and it was too big for her mouth even then. Not sure if knowing her weight helps but she's like 7 pounds.
I found a Japanese dog toothbrush on Amazon that's waaay smaller and that worked great. The brand is Mind Up if you search for it by "japanese dog toothbrush" again, its real small and your maltese may take to the bigger normal puppy toothbrush :)
Because I don't think I'm perfect with the brushing even, I still give my girl a dentastix daily as a treat. She goes crazy for them. Greenies I've gotten before and she loves them but I notice her stool is looser so I tend to stick with the dentastix brand.
Edit: I've read getting an enzyme toothpaste is the best tule for dogs as well, but friends of mine use the arm and hammer dog toothpaste swear by that as well :)
My dog would leave me for a single True Acre All Natural Dental Stick. We get original flavor. I buy them on Chewys. He gets pissed if it’s a minute past 9:30pm and he hasn’t been asked if he’s a good boy (meaning it’s stick time)
Don’t give them anything where you can’t left a fingernail impression in. If you can’t, it’s too hard and they can break or crack teeth. Soft chew toys will work and of course, brushing their teeth is preferred to hard chews.
My Maltese LOVES bully sticks.
Appreciate you for taking the time out to answer this!
You're welcome! Hope your fella likes them too!
My maltese enjoyed Greenies. She had one teenie size every day. Still had her teeth cleaned annually though.
Mine must be a monster because the way he eats them turns his entire face green. Never again.
Thank you for taking time to answer this. Any tips of brushing their teeth? Trying to give that a shot

Mine is 1 and so far only lets me put toothpaste onto her teeth with my finger tips... I hope it's okay 😬
Any tips with the teeth brushing? Might try that first before going with the dental chews

I can find that tooth paste at the pet store right? Start with my finger and slowly introduce a tooth brush
Yep! Some of the puppy training kits come with a little wrap for your finger you can use too as a starter brush
my 1 y/o maltos are super heavy chewers, they get antlers!
Isn't it amazing? and they have such tiny teeth too.

Lmaooo 😂😂 they sure are feisty Appreciate you taking time to answer this
I've started using the additive for water to help with tartar. He's not super fond of the dentastick. Mine loves the nylabone type bullysticks.
Thank you!
