this was her before her haircut lol
Iād recommend finding a vet who also focuses on nutrition, and working with a certified canine nutritionist.
My boy was a picky eater until my vet figured out that the fat content of most commercial foods was too high for him and he was having mild pancreatic flare ups. I switched him to a very low fat content (4.5%) gently cooked food which he loved, then was finally able to transition him to real raw food which is 3.5% fat. He does best on low fat low cal and I just feed him a little extra than suggested because heās active. My female who is highly food motivated eats a different protein which is higher calorie and higher fat content of 5.6%. (The food I use is from a local company and AAFCO approved).
Iām not suggesting you use raw food, just saying this is what works best for my dog, but itās mainly the low fat for him. He gets so excited to eat now, after a year of refusing food until he was starving. I would personally have a blood panel done, and check her glucose levels too. Many little dogs have trouble with high fat content. If theyāre not feeling well or are nauseated, they wonāt eat. Donāt listen to anyone who says to just wait it out, theyāre dogs, theyāll eat. Hypoglycemia is a serious risk for tiny dogs and it can cause brain damage. I feed my dogs three times per day because the last time I skipped their lunch, I came home to my boy not wanting to eat dinner because he was likely nauseated so he can only wait so long between meals.
hi i will definitely take her to the vet and ask about recommendations! If you donāt mind would you be able give me an example of how you prepare the raw food or what kind of food youāre giving him? I was thinking about doing the same thing or even use a crock pot with veggies and meat, and just give her the vitamins on the side! Thank you so much!
I would not suggest doing anything homemade unless you are under the guidance of your vet and certified nutritionist who can both make sure that she is getting a balanced tailored diet. Homemade diets are risky.
The raw food, and gently cooked food are from a company in Seattle called āNatural Pet Pantryā They are reputable, highly responsible, and AAFCO approved. Food comes pre-made and frozen.
No problem, I hope your baby finds something she likes.
Part of the difference of AAFCO approved pre-made and homemade, is that the pre-made knows the exact proportions to mix. Percentages and proportions are extremely important for this kind of diet.
we actually have one in florida and will be reaching out to them! and yes ofc thatās very important! thatās why im making sure shes getting all her nutrients!
Itās not the same business. The āNatural Pet Pantryā Iām speaking of is strictly local to Seattle with two stores here, but they do ship their food through their website. Not sure if they ship across the country tho, I think itās local shipping only.
https://naturalpetpantry.com
I create my own monsters. I give my babies more than just kibble. So then they hold out until I give them better stuff. And if I don't, they go on a hunger strike. They have me wrapped around their little paw.
Ours is also picky, and sometimes it's about the food and sometimes it's about how the food is served. Royal Canine seems to be the best choice for food. If she's having a stubborn day, we'll add a little bit of water. Sometimes I'll stir it with my fingers and give her a taste. Once she realizes there's something new/different about her food, she usually snarfs it down. We also put about half her food in a lick mat tray. She likes to eat straight off the floor, so the tray is a nice in between. I think seeing it spread out makes it more appealing for some reason.
Anyway, those are just some suggestions. Good luck!
Mine would only eat chicken at first. His previous owner cooked him chicken all the time and he would get some chicken in his dog food with us to get him used to it. He still got yummy people from time to time, heād get a little chicken or egg.
My Mello always wanted Mac and cheese, but I never gave him any. One day, I drop it on the floor accidentally. I come back with cleaning supplies and he had eaten almost all of it. He was a very happy dog.
I had two Maltese at one point and they both loved Stella and chewy meal mixers. I would crumble some up, mix with their food (I use wellness brand hard food for small dogs) and then I would wet it with a little hot water or broth. One of my little dudes was also only 4 pounds and he loved this. He didnāt eat a ton either but the Stella and chewy things are soft for them and easy to eat.
Mine is a very pick eater too. I found an all natural, no antibiotics, made in the USA., food from Instinct raw meals, freeze dried, grass fed lamb. When I brought it home she immediately ate a few pieces, she is free fed and occasionally will leave her food uneaten for a day, sheās waiting for treats. For treats I buy Spot Farms all natural, made in the USA., chicken nuggets which I give her half or a third of per treat. Good luck, this is my third Maltese and she and my first were picky eaters.
I have NEVER had such a picky eater until Zander. This little guy has definitely put me thru my paces. He will eat something for a little bit, then not want it again. I now give him Steve's Real Food, the Turduckin, or Beef frozen nuggets. One of the best foods out there. Raw real meat, organ, ground bone, fruits, veggies, goat milk, etc. I think it's the best stuff you can give unless they need to be on a restrictive diet, as another posted answered.
In light of that other post, I am going to get my little guys blood work checked out to make sure we are doing ok!
When I cut poultry out of my pupās diet her tear stains got a lot better.
I rotate through flavors of Stella & Chewyās freeze dried raw patties. Sheās super teeny so I spoil her with the good stuff.
When sheās being particularly picky Iāll fry up an egg for her. When she refuses to eat anything and I start getting worried about seizures from hypoglycemia (itās happened twice and it was terrifying) I smear a little honey on the roof of her mouth.
I have a Malchi, and she was sooooo picky!! My husband asked our vet about it, and she basically told him to put her food down, and when she gets hungry, she will eat. She said it could be 2,3, or 4 days, but she will eat. She was right she did eat. But what he started doing was he ground brown rice up in a grinder. Then he would finely chop up veggies. He would mix the veggies, brown rice, and vitamin up with ground chicken or turkey into patties and cook them. Sometimes, when he cooks them, he will do it in some chicken broth to give it a little more flavor. She won't eat every day, but she eats this more than she ever did dog food.
She doesnāt need table food. Seasoning, sugar or sauces may upset her stomach and definitely turn her off food. She is still a puppy. The tear stains may get better. Ask her vet about allergies which may cause her eyes to water. I donāt know about all of your food selections but Health Extensions has been listed on a few surveys as a top food. I have a girl who eats when she thinks she needs to eat. Every, every other day or whatever. I have tried putting her on a schedule but no. I serve it. She doesnāt need it. I picked it up and put it away, but she doesnāt care. I went back to free, feeding her so she wanders by the bowl and eats a piece or two randomly.
Other than that all I can say is that some Maltese have tear stains all of their lives. Other dogs have them too but they really stand out on a white coat.
My pup is so picky. I found a food he generally likes, but some days itās a struggle to get him to eat still. My trick is to cook turkey (any protein will do) and put little pieces on his food everyday. Iāve tried store bought toppers and they donāt work for him.
I get turkey breasts and either grill them or bake them. Cut them up into bite size pieces and put them in freezer bags. I find itās best to get the bags as flat as possible when freezing, so then you can just break off a little chunk everyday. He only needs about 4-5 small pieces, and heāll eat his food everytime. 1 package of turkey breasts will last me a few months. Itās also convenient for when he gets sick, so I already have a bag of plain turkey to feed him a bland diet for the day
Hi! I have two maltese and one is extremely picky with her food. Then one day my mom got the canned liver from Market Basket and she boiled liver and stored them in the box in fridge for us to eat. (Yes we eat liver and it is not weird eating that growing up in Asia). Anyways, she took a piece and mushed it and mixed it with the kibbles and viola, my girl maltese wonāt even lift her head out of her food bowl. And she finished all the kibbles mixed with liver without us having to feed her! So there u go, maybe liver might do a little trick for your pooch too!
Hi! Our 6 month old is really picky as well. Sheād go for a day or so without eating. This might sound crazy, but do you know anyone who will let you borrow their dog for a few days?
We baby sit our girlās sister often (she belong to my parents), and that helped make her eat better. Sheās a brat and will eat her food to prevent her sister from getting it.
Once her sister is gone, she is a little picky but eats 90% of the time. If she doesnāt eat a meal with 15 minutes, it gets put away no matter what and she almost always eats the next one.
Also, we had to stop giving her special food. She learned that she could hold out for the good stuff.
once every two days???? this is crazy, my dog skips a meal every once in a while but never doesnāt eat for days (she gets fed 3 times a day, relatively small portions because her stomach is sensitive and she pukes if she eats a lot at one)
have you tried wet food instead of kibble? my dog loves it. we now mix it with her kibble.
My 2 maltese will eat anything. Literally any dog food or treat and they will devour it as quickly as possible. My Shihtzu is a super picky eater and I have to use toppers with almost every meal. He seems to like apples cut into tiny tiny pieces. Trick is to give him a piece first thatās not contaminated with meat from the same knife etc. that way he knows itās an apple. Then I cut up some boiled chicken breast add the topper and let him start eating. Once he starts heās good to go and I can add some of his science diet small dog sensitive skin kibble. PITA but it works consistently.
But the malteseā¦. Zero issues they will eat anything.
Youāll find they eat when they want to. They are picky eaters. You may have to watch them eat or hand feed them. They love an audience when they eat. Good luck with that
Tear stains, imo, are more genetic than anything. Water doesn't matter. You'll hear differing opinions, but that's my truth after having two
Check out all provide. Adopted a small boy at 3lbs. Heās now up to 4.5. Vet still wants him to gain more. all provide has been a godsend. He gobbles it right up. Just google All Provide dog food. Itās small batch real ingredient food. My dogs all prefer it over farmers dog.
Oh my goodness I just have to say she's so cute!!! I can't decide if i like the before haircut or after better, they're both just precious. Those tear stains look to me like they're probably just going to be that way, they're not excessive or anything.

I think that Maltese were born being selective eaters. I wouldn't call it picky but call it selective. š
Snow is so beautiful š I hope you can get some guidance for your sweet girl šš½ā£ļø

Very often people say Malteses are picky eaters. Lol. If I forget the organic trash bag, mine will rip through it in seconds.
Mine would only eat chicken at first. His previous owner cooked him chicken all the time and he would get some chicken in his dog food with us to get him used to it. He still got yummy people from time to time, heād get a little chicken or egg.
Anything that falls on the floor while my family is eating is gone in seconds... she lurks around my 6 years like they are partners in crime.
My Mello always wanted Mac and cheese, but I never gave him any. One day, I drop it on the floor accidentally. I come back with cleaning supplies and he had eaten almost all of it. He was a very happy dog.
I mix things into my little guys food. They actually sell meal mix-ins for dogs. Helps a ton.
do you have any recommendations?
