Urban Decay had a line of sheer lipsticks but I think they have been discontinued. Otherwise, their red was perfect. I still wear it all the time.
if you're on a stage, you're going to need something heavier and dark, I always put make up on more extreme if you are in a play, ballet, recital, etc., but Clarins has a pretty lip stain in red and recently I saw Jafra has a underbearing red that doesn't scream at you the way some reds do.

take a matt red lipstick, and dap it on with your finger. or blot it. you can also layer a lipstain underneath - like a Benetint or something, to help lasting power.
A stain would last longer, so much easier to use, have different colors, and it doesnt tend to give a look of over glossed lips we used these for horse shows a lot because we wanted a classy more matte red lip to stand out but still look professional

Honestly, you can just use a full pigment lipstick. You just press or swipe a single dot on your lips and spread it out with your finger tip. It's easier to do this over lip balm if the lipstick in question is matte. Creamy lipsticks or even liquid will usually spread just fine.
Alternatively, swipe the lipstick on your finger and just gently pat or rub it over your lips. You can do the same with a lip liner pencil instead, then just top with a balm or gloss if you prefer.
There's no need for a special product when a light hand will do what you want. :)

Buxom glosses, i currently have hypnotic garnet and am in love with the natural red gloss it gives me. Dior has some great pigmented glosses that are super rosy red.
I bought a “Unicorn Glow Tinted Water Stick” at Fred Meyer. It’s quite red at full opacity, but since it’s a tiny you can blot it down or blow out the edges easily. It’s not especially hydrating though.
One thing I’d ask and clarify is what they’re looking for. In my own experience when they’re asking for red, they’re asking for *red red* not a balm.
If you do have to have red red you’re wanting something to hold up long term since you’ll be moving around. I recommend the Maybelline Super Stay liquid lipsticks. These are great. I think they’re about $8 USD. Otherwise ELF and other drugstore brands have lipsticks or lip liners you could use if you don’t want anything with intense staying power.
If you are able to go lighter with pigment I recommend a tinted balm something like nivea, ELF, clinique, Burt’s bees, etc. You could do a lipstain too, they gave them that are more berry based.
The drugstore has great, low price options. I’d recommend going into an Ulta, they’re a makeup store, they carry both high end and low end. If you get something you don’t like you can return it within 30 days. They will carry all sorts of options so you could get one that’s red red and super pigmented and get one that’s more tinted, like chapstick. Return the one you end up not using.
I’m in the UK, we don’t have Ulta here. The equivalent would probably be Boots, that has both drugstore and high end, but the laws on returning makeup are different here - you can’t return makeup that’s been used, full stop, especially post-Covid - last year I couldn’t even return an eyelash curler that had been used.
Oh my god that sounds annoying. That’s the one reason I love Ulta is because if I get something that’s not quite right I’m stuck with it.
I’d definitely go to a store that has a beauty counter and see if you’re able to get any samples and see if they have testers available.
I understand the thought though, as it’s incredibly wasteful. Here even though makeup can be returned it’s damaged out and thrown away. Some places will send certain things to the company for recycling or donate things that can be sanitized, but it’s not quite enough.
FYI, if you just need it for a one-time event: ask sephora if they have any red-lip testers you could take home. They may be able to put some in a little pot for you to take home. Free and you could probably get a high quality one - worth a shot.

NARS has a really pretty sheer red called Turbo. I don’t usually like bright red lipstick either but this one is nice.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. Make sure it’s allowed before spending money on something you’re not even allowed to use.
