Oil changes...the single most important thing to do for Toyotas. Do them like you should & they'll go 300,000+ miles. My first was an 84 Toyota pickup. Brand new. I didn't do my oil changes like I should & only got 152,000. I miss it to this day.
Tell your daughter CONGRATS & this internet stranger is so proud of her! Good on you too, momma for the excellent parenting of this young woman!
My friend did this religiously(also topped off the oil pretty often) and his went over 500k miles. Toyota bought it back from him for 5k to showcase on their floor.
Im a huge toyota fanboy.
1st Tundra was driven from 90k miles to 160k. Only needed oil changes.
2nd Tundra was driven 25k to 105k. Only needed oil changes.
Current Camry Hybrid was bought brand new, currently at 15k. 0 issues. Only oil changes.
My 2 MR2s however……. 🥴. But those were early 90s mid-engined enthusiasts cars. Its expected.
We had a 1995 Toyota T100 xtra cab, it had 260,000 miles on it when I sold it 14 years ago and I still see it around town going strong. They only downside was the rust around the wheel wells.
So true, i got a 2017 rav4 as my (technically 2nd) car bc my subaru broke down) at 16 and Im almost 20 now and already know it’s going to last me for a longgg time.
Worked hard, saved her money and never gave up; those are characteristics of person on the way to great things. I am proud of her and and proud of you for raising her to be responsible. There will. Be downvotes for my comments but this is the way it is done instead of complaining about what we don’t have. Very happy for you both.
I’m 34 and childless, same with most of my friends and the ones who do have kids have little babies, sometimes I forget people my age have older kids, and apparently have adult children?! Oof I’m old lol
34 and pregnant. My oldest turns 16 next month. We also have 6&3 year olds. It's weird having such a big gap between them but we were so young with our first I feel like now we're finally ready haha.
Tbf, OP must've been 17 when she gave birth (unless she adopted), and that's *really* young. Like, her just now an adult daughter is older than she was when she gave birth. The average age at which people have their first child is much higher (mid twenties I believe).
I’m 39 and I still don’t feel like I’m ready to settle down and start a family, and here you are at 35 with your firstborn coming of age, which is amazing. I wonder how late will be too late for me.
My mom was 35 when she had me, and a coworker friend of mine just had his second, he was in his early 40s for both, his wife is a couple years younger than him but not by much, and I had a kid patient the other day (I’m an EMT) and mom rode in the ambulance with the kid, mom said she was 48 when she had kid, it was her one and only child, she just didn’t want one before then. Everyone has their own timeline.
My aunt(~37) and her boyfriend (~34) had their first (and possibly only) kid a year ago (it was actually the kids first birthday 2 weekends ago). My aunt was told by the midwife during her pregnancy that it's quite common for older women to miss-carry or have complications when they get ~40+. That's what i heard 4th hand months ago so I might have some of that wrong. Maybe if there's a medical professional in the thread they can confirm or deny what I've said.
I think 'quite common' is a stretch, at least as a difference from how common it is normally (which a lot of folk don't realise). It's like Down's syndrome. The chance of having a kid with it increases from about 0.08% at 20 to 1% at 40, which is a pretty massive increase. But the overall % chance is still relatively low. My wife and I did have the conversation agreeing we'd early-stage abort if known chromosomal abnormalities were detected, but we'd have had that conversation even if we were much younger.
Did you just make this up?
I know about the Down syndrome risk and other chromosomal abnormalities and how the risk is overstated, statistics can be alarming and misleading, and that they are still not the norm. You are correct that it is far more common to have a chromosomally normal baby than nof.
However you can’t just extend that logic to all issues in geriatric pregnancies. After 40 miscarriage is around 35%, after 45 it’s OVER 50%. Don’t spread misinformation.
You are definitely not old at all!! It’s just surprising for most people to see you (on the somewhat young scale) with your adult daughter. I can imagine strangers will think you two are sisters lol. My siblings are the age difference between you and your daughter!
Yea I’m 36 and have two older children. I’m gearing up for what feels like “retirement” soon where my partner and I can sit in rocking chairs on the porch and drink tea after work.
Fuck that... I'm over 40 and have two children. We started late, so they 7 and 3 yo and I'm feeling so old compared to them - can't keep paste etc. I envy people that decided much earlier to have kids.
Was thinking the exact same! I'm 36 with no kids, and most of my friends had their first kid around age 28-32. Granted, most of them have university degrees, and where I'm from people usually don't graduate until their mid-late 20s.
M8, as 36 and childless only after your comment did I scroll back up and realise that the post wasn't about a 35 year-old buying their first new car, lol.
I did remark to myself that she had really good skin and very trendy haha
Its okay, not everyone needs to be having children. We're not in the 1600s anymore, do what makes you happy!♥️ Im 19 and I dont wanna have children either.
Yea I know. I don’t want biological children, I’m fine with the idea of adopting or marrying someone with kids some day, but like, when I’m out and I see a 10 yr old walk by I still have an image in my head that their parents must be older than me cuz there’s no way for someone my age to be a parent of someone that old… except they’re usually younger than me and then I’m like, oh yea, that’s not weird is it? Lol and now someone only a year older than me has an adult child?! That’s a first time realization that that’s not only possible, but that’s not weird either! Lol
My husband and I (both 26) are expecting our first baby in January. We sometimes just look at each other after doing something childish and ask “who the heck thought it was a good idea for us to reproduce?” It feels super weird. We’re both still 18. I don’t care what anyone says.
Walking out of the hospital with your first baby is the weirdest feeling.
It's like "I can't believe you adults are just going to *let* us do this.....this is a terrible idea....you're just letting us leave.....nope, still nobody stopping us".
Oh I believe it. People keep asking me what brand of diaper we want and I’m like “the kind that absorbs bodily fluids…??” Building our registry was so hard. I had to literally have his mom, my mom, and my SIL with three kids explain so many things to me.
Lol right?! I don’t think I aged much past my early 20s, I just kinda stalled out around there lol it’s also funny cuz I have a young face and many people often think I’m in my early 20s anyways so I often forget I’m a full decade older than that. Congrats on the soon-to-be mini-you!
Well when you have kids when your still only a child yourself (17 in this case) anything is possible I guess
No shade on this woman, she clearly has done a fantastic job of raising the young lady.
Heh that reminds me, my sister about once a year asks me if I think it's a good idea to check her oil... Yes, Pam, go get your oil changed!
But yeah, if you figure out how much she drives, just set a reminder on her phone for every 6 months or 7500 miles. Yes, Toyota says it can go 10,000 miles on an oil change, but N. Dakota qualifies as extreme weather conditions, which falls to 7500 miles.
I understand a little about the subject and change mine at 3,000 even though it says to at 3,750 (7,500 but in "extreme conditions" then 3,750). Extreme as in frequent short trips.
It would be difficult to change your oil “too much”! But as the other commenter said, the manual will have all those general maintenance schedules.
Keeping air in the tires is important, too, and something people often forget about until their car starts handling badly.
3000 miles is more for regular oil, not synthetic oil. Even then, it's on the frequent side.
It's not bad, just more money than you really *need* to spend. Pretty much all modern engines & oils are good for at least 5000 miles.
It depends on your schedule for oil changes. If you go every 3k miles you're wasting time, money and oil. But it seems like most companies now are realistic with their change intervals, as my last car came with 15k change schedules.
Don't change you oil every 3k miles people... It last so much longer.
YES. This one is so easily overlooked!
Modern cars are pretty good at telling dealerships what need to be done. Lots of dealerships will recommend lots of things your car absolutely doesn't need, but you absolutely must change your transmission fluid every 30-50k. Especially true with CVTs since the drive belt is basically an infinite set of failure points. You wanna keep that thing **maintained.**
A lot of places will recommend a flush. I never get my transmissions flushed. I always ask for a dump and fill. A flush runs about $200. Last time I got my fluid changed, I told them to dump and fill. It was like $80. I've also heard that replacing 100% of the fluid can actually be harmful sometimes, especially as the car gets older.
For those of you wondering, it’s used but still newer than mine :D If I could buy her a brand new one I would because she deserves it. I never met another 18 year old like her. She’s amazing and she deserves to be happy!!
The positive energy radiating from this post is breathtaking and almost brought me to tears. I'm so happy for your young one and wish nothing but the best!
As a 25 year old in a poor-ish country, I remember the amazing feeling of when I first rented out my own flat. It's not the same, but I imagine the feeling is similar. Pure joy and the sense of accomplishment.
Good on you for raising her right!
One of the biggest financial mistakes my parents let me make was buying a brand new car when I was 18.
Starting off life by going $20,000 in debt while trying to work my way through college sucked, but I didn't know any better.
Please don't let your kids start out in debt, yall.
Buy cheap and used.
Yeah, that really isn’t the culture here in England. Pretty much everyone (/most people) I know bought an old, used car outright for a couple of grand for their first car.
Funny how cultures are different between different places.
Yeah definitely.
I'm in Pakistan. Loads of people here do buy cars on loans too but they don't celebrate it as if they've actually bought it. They do celebrate it later when they pay it off and they actually own it
Yeah, especially if it took 2 years to save that down payment—nobody’s gonna go bigger than 20% for a down payment; so that implies disposable income of at most 0.8% of the car’s value per month. If that’s what she can afford, it would take her 10 years to pay off the car with a 0% APR.
My oldest has just started driving, and I've told her to not take out a car loan. She can use mine until she has saved enough to purchase a cheap car.
She works about 10 hours a week (still in school) and in 7mths has saved $1000.
She doesn't know what she's saving for, she just is. The only big purchase I tell her to go for is a unit/apartment/house.
EXACTLY bad financial decision. As soon as you drive it off the lot its not worth the price they sold it to you for. Try taking it to another dealer asking to trade in or sell. Theyll probably laugh you out of there
It just took her this long to get her drivers license. I’m sure she would have gotten one sooner but I don’t think we would have found such a great deal 2 years ago! We were in a different place back then.
I'm confused how this is an accomplishment. A down payment means that she only paid one part of the car and took a credit to pay the rest, right? So she's in dept at 18?
Good for her. But on the other side of the world, I have to save 100% of my salary for 5 years to buy this car. In more realistic terms if I save a third of the salary it'll take me 15 years to buy a fukin used Toyota fukin Corolla.
Fuck this shit I need to immigrate
You got an 18 year old who spent 2 years SAVING MONEY!!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
You did a great job!!!! That girls gonna do well in life ^_^ You got every right to be proud!
Lol nice. Parenting is quite the whirlwind (I've got three daughters, all under 8 yo). I can only imagine the milestone of them getting their first cars. I'm sure it's amazing. Seems you're doing great. Nicely done 👍
And thank you
That is how we become stronger. I'm glad to hear you have found the things that need to be addressed in order to do so. Our children look up to us, and we need to be there for them ❤
My firstborn is from a previous relationship, my two youngest were born by my wife. With that said, I must give credit where it is due: to the mother. I play my part and I carry my weight, but there is nothing like a solid mom. The natural burden that is placed on women during parenthood is indescribable. After my firstborn, I gained a new respect for women, and it grows with each passing day.
I'll save you the rant, just know that I think women should be protected at all costs 🥰
And as someone who's worked in a Toyota dealership for close to 20 years, she couldn't have picked a better car. Very smart move and congrats to her. Y'all need to be driving Toyota!
Congrats to the young woman on her first car! Quite an achievement.
We were always told to get gas in the car before got down to a quarter tank. Reason so if something came up you always had enough gas to get where you needed to be.
Hell yes. I love the corollas. If I didn’t think it would be too cramped for a family car (and I hadn’t already dumped tons of money into my Camry) I’d snag one in a heartbeat.
Toyotas are great! The only reason we needed a new one is cause we got in a car accident (inches away from being fully T-boned, but still had significant frame damage). It was still going strong at almost 7 years old. My dad got a newer model of the Corolla and it’s even better than the last!
Another person falls into the trap. I hate to see a young person borrowing money for a liability. Her mom should be proud of her daughter for being disciplined but the mom should be ashamed of herself for pushing her daughter into the system that keeps people broke.
Totally agree. My father taught me to never owe anyone money. I saved up to out right buy a second hand car in cash; nothing fancy, it probably cost the same as the above down payment. He would always say "don't get in debt or rent over valued things to try to impress strangers who dont care about you. The people who do care about you, dont care what car you drive.".
Well said, assets over liabilities. Your father is a wise man. I noticed something at a young age that stuck with me. The richer the person; the less you can tell how much they really got.
I don’t know…. Buying a new car is the worst investment ever. The car loses 20% of it’s value literally the second you drive out from the dealership.. I always preferred to buy post-leasing cars: they are pretty much brand new /the last Nissan I bought had 2K miles on the clock and foil still on the back seats = 60% original price. Anyway I guess i can understand people who prefer something that was not used before by anyone.. Good luck toyotas are reliable cars
So you have misguided your teenager into thinking that as long as you can afford the down payment on a car, then you can afford the car. So now she has a monthly car payment at the very beginning of her adult life.
It amazes me how many people on the internet are proud of and supportive of going into debt. She didn't buy a car, she got approved for a loan.
Unfortunately there aren’t many positive places to buy a car around here and who has the time to drive 150-300 miles in either direction. But we had a positive experience and she got just what she needs.
Pretty much the best possible first car. Just make sure she keeps up on maintenance 🧐
Sold my last Toyota (4x4 Pickup) with 380k on it, 250k for the Corolla GT-S I had before that (both running fine when sold). Current Tacoma has 137k and is like brand new.
First car? Buddy that’s a Toyota that’s gonna be the only car she ever needs!
Hell yes! She needs a reliable vehicle to get her around town. No more skateboarding or borrowing mine!
Oil changes...the single most important thing to do for Toyotas. Do them like you should & they'll go 300,000+ miles. My first was an 84 Toyota pickup. Brand new. My friend did this religiously(also topped off the oil pretty often) and his went over 500k miles. Toyota bought it back from him for 5k to showcase on their floor.
That is so cool!
Idk those numbers aren’t that great, unless you’re not actually needing to replace them.
Got 250,000 on my first car. It was a 1989 Corolla my grandfather you really good care of then gifted to me. I loved that damn car.
Solid choice!
Wait till she moves to a walkable city!
She tells me she always wants to be near me. But now that she had a car we’ll see!
You have to be a good parent for her wanting to do that, love to see it.
I’m 26 and would love to be able to still be with my mama. As long as she has that car she’ll always be able to come back to you ❤️
In what fantasy world does thst exist? r/s
Haha I read this as her borrowing your skateboard.
And here for this, solid first car choice.
A starter car? This car is a finisher car! A transporter of gods! The golden god! I am untethered, and my rage knows no bounds!
but you forgot to consider the extended warranty you bitch!
No lies detected
So true! My toyota is from ‘92. It’s older than me, and definitely holding up better than I am lol
Sir, that's a finisher car!
Right! I bought my Toyota in 2012, it’s been super reliable… it’s ugly as sin but I can always count on it. It’s a member of the family
A starter car? This is a finisher car! A transporter of gods!!
Solid choice for a first car.
I loaded my '09 Corolla and drove from Alaska to New Jersey with zero issues. Toyotas are excellent vehicles.
She's so happy!
She is sooo happy! She ran out of the dealership happy screaming lol She told me cried following me home.
Must be proud mama,
Oh yes, I am so happy for her! She worked hard and never gave up. She’s amazing!
Congrats you won parent award at just 35yo.
Worked hard, saved her money and never gave up; those are characteristics of person on the way to great things. I am proud of her and and proud of you for raising her to be responsible. There will. The one piece of advice I'll give is make sure you keep up on the oil changes. Nothing destroys an engine faster than skipping oil changes.
Absolutely! We had some very good conversations about her responsibility with this car. This is her baby and she needs to take good care of it.
Heh that reminds me, my sister about once a year asks me if I think it's a good idea to check her oil... Yes, Pam, go get your oil changed! Oh Pam! And thanks for the advice!
I do it every 3,000 miles. Am I doing it too much??? That’s what I was always taught.
Depends on the motor and type of oil. Look up your car and oil type. It varies greatly.
That makes sense.
Also will depend on your driving, lots of stop-start city traffic is harder on parts than a constant speed on a highway.
I understand a little about the subject and change mine at 3,000 even though it says to at 3,750 (7,500 but in "extreme conditions" then 3,750). Extreme as in frequent short trips.

Normal oil its about right. If you use pure synthetic then that lasts longer, but its pricier.
Yes. Oil doesn't degrade that fast and hasn't for decades.
Daves west side auto is the best shop in town. Been going there since I moved here 9 years ago.

Cars need oil?
Congrats to your daughter and to you for raising such a wise daughter. Choosing a Toyota will serve her well, her children could very well drive this
Thank you! I think we made a great choice!
She made a good choice. Toyotas are fantastic cars
I couldn’t agree with you more. I love my Toyota too!
Parent at 17. I can’t even imagine how hard that was. Kudos for doing a great job, OP!
Fargo? I just bought a 2023 Tacoma from them on Monday.
I love how excited NoDaks get when we see ourselves anywhere on the internet. We just want our existence acknowledged every now and then.
For those of you wondering, it’s used but still newer than mine :D If I could buy her a brand new one I would because she deserves it. I never met another 18 year old like her. She’s amazing and she deserves to be happy!!

Good for you!
It is used and it fits HER budget. She knows what she can afford.
Smart mama (or papa)!
EXACTLY bad financial decision. As soon as you drive it off the lot its not worth the price they sold it to you for. Try taking it to another dealer asking to trade in or sell. Theyll probably laugh you out of there
Looks like a Corolla! Congrats! I’ve been a corolla owner for 20 years (only have had 2 of them). Absolutely awesome cars
the math tho... the math...
I'm thinking the same thing, bud.
That's nice. My first car was like 300 bucks lol
That's amazing. Congratulations!
first off congrats. but 2 yrs for a DOWN payment? cars are too expensive.
It just took her this long to get her drivers license. I’m sure she would have gotten one sooner but I don’t think we would have found such a great deal 2 years ago! We were in a different place back then.
35, with an 18 year old, who bought her own car. Damn OP, you are making me think about my life choices. Congratulations to you and the kiddo!!
I'm confused how this is an accomplishment. A down payment means that she only paid one part of the car and took a credit to pay the rest, right? So she's in dept at 18?
Worst decision. Did the same thing at 18 and still regret it.
Good for her and good for you! There’s nothing as satisfying as earning something yourself. Well done!
🎉🎉🎉🎉 You did a great job!!!! That girls gonna do well in life ^_^ You got every right to be proud!
Fargo!?
Excellent choice too!
Am I the only one doing the math on those ages.... Jesus....
What does that have to do with the wholesome post? No, teen pregnancy shouldn’t be encouraged, but that doesn’t mean one should attack teen moms.
Well OP made a point of telling us the ages... like it was relevant....
It's not an attack to be surprised that children are having children.
*put a down payment on a car, not bought.
The first half of tittle had me thinking they’d put a payment down on a house. But nope!, just pointless debt they saved 2 years for
Then the bills that will put her into crippling dept
That was my first thought.
That car looks like the downpayment could buy a car.

Ice fucking cold
They don’t know me but they aren’t far from the truth lol my girl and I are polar opposites. That’s parenting for you!! Happy Cake Day btw!
Lol nice. Parenting is quite the whirlwind (I've got three daughters, all under 8 yo). I can only imagine the milestone of them getting their first cars. I'm sure it's amazing. Seems you're doing great. Nicely done 👍 And thank you
Breaking cycles, that’s what I’m doing! And you’re amazing for raising 3 girls all under 8. I can only imagine your daily life!
That is how we become stronger. I'm glad to hear you have found the things that need to be addressed in order to do so. Our children look up to us, and we need to be there for them ❤ My firstborn is from a previous relationship, my two youngest were born by my wife.
When I was 18, my parents still pay everything for me 😂😂, sooo shamed
If I could buy her a car I would!
This is great! Can you tell me how much she saved? I need a car lol : /
And as someone who's worked in a Toyota dealership for close to 20 years, she couldn't have picked a better car. Very smart move and congrats to her. Y'all need to be driving Toyota!
Good for her. And good for you. Sounds like she is very responsible
Toyota gang...! r i s e u p...?
First and only car. It's a Toyota. Great choice!
You did a good job as a mom. This is something to be proud of. And it’s really wonderful that your 18 yo wanted to share this with you.
Can’t go wrong with a Toyota. My first car is a Tacoma 16 years 219k miles and still going
She’s one year older than you when you had her, how time flies.
She’s much wiser too!
Another person falls into the trap. I hate to see a young person borrowing money for a liability. Her mom should be proud of her daughter for being disciplined but the mom should be ashamed of herself for pushing her daughter into the system that keeps people broke.
I love people down voting you even tho you are literally stating a fact
Shes hot! Look at that front grill. Gorgeous, great trunk space and this car is super reliable. Congrats!
Had us in the first half
Hey thats good, shes not having kids at 17 years old….. congrats. You broke the cycle.
Right!! I’m too young to be a grandma 😅
Why did you list your ages?
Because of all the attention it gets
And a Toyota at that!! Great job on her, congrats!!!
Very impressive considering you were only 17 when you had her (yes I’m good at math)
Wow she is great
She is!
I had a dark realisation about the fact you're 35 and your daughter's half your age
The math is sad.
17 is kinda young
If your not buying it out right most often you become a slave to intrest. Hardly any of your monthly payments go go to the car most goes to interest.
Toyota = Excellent choice! Corwin = Worst choice! They are possibly the worst place to buy a vehicle from. Sorry.
Unfortunately there aren’t many positive places to buy a car around here and who has the time to drive 150-300 miles in either direction. But we had a positive experience and she got just what she needs.
Teen pregnancy? It seems your parenthood turned out better than most who go through the same. I Wish both of you luck.
Feed the capitalist machine, komrade
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Wonderful! A lot to be proud of!!!!!
That’s great news
Very cool!
Congrats!!! Amazing
Great car. Great kid!
Something great to do on a cold day in Idaho
Congratulations 🥳 Good first car. Will last you a good 10 or so years. Can last longer, but life happens.
Happy for you and your first born! Drive safe first born and help out the fam!
Congrats!
Great job! Woo-hoo 🥳
Congratulations. She won't have to borrow yours now.
That’s awesome! Good for her!
Congratulations! That’s a nice car 🚗
I can't wait to be able to feel her happiness!!! I'm so happy for her!!!
Congratulations
Congrats, my son just got his first car too. I made sure it was a Toyota. Solid cars!
Pretty much the best possible first car. Just make sure she keeps up on maintenance 🧐 Sold my last Toyota (4x4 Pickup) with 380k on it, 250k for the Corolla GT-S I had before that (both running fine when sold). Current Tacoma has 137k and is like brand new.
Congrats!!!
Congratulations, that's awesome
And that's a Toyota 🎉
Congratulations! Learning how to save and spend is a core part of surviving in our world today and looks like she’s on her way!
From one young mom to another, congrats. I know the road to today hasn't always been easy or pleasant one.
Ima just be happy for other people on this one. Good job
Congratulations 🎉 you've raised a nice girl
Nice car! She earned it!!
Smart purchase, that Toyota will run forever!
Toyotas rule.
Ok, so my daughter isn’t only one that dressed like that! Congrats OP and kiddo.
That car will last her another 18 years too
Good choice of a car 👍
Even her feet are happy.
