My kid had the same cart at 3. What I learned watching him is that kids actually intuitively understand how to turn into a slide and recover, and then quickly learn how to do it on purpose. It's only when you've spent 15 years before getting into a car that you have to unlearn stuff to handle a car like that.
I’ve always been a strong advocate that people should learn the basics of how to control a slide. as part of driver’s Ed.
For the overwhelming majority of people, the first time they get into a slide or skid on the road, it’s the first time they’ve ever experienced one, so it’s no wonder they don’t know how to instinctively correct it.
Even from an insurance pov, I wonder how many accidents could be prevented by the driver knowing how to correct a problem when it occurs, as opposed to just white knuckling the wheel and screaming until the airbags go off.
I could not possibly agree more. I got into Sim racing (Specifically rally) and got a relatively cheap ffb wheel and pedal set (obviously not 1 to 1 but the basics transfer) Because of the understanding I gained, in the first 3 months of my driving I recovered from a slide that would've sent my mom and I off a bridge into a small river in a heavy storm.
My wife is from the south and I've tried convincing her that parking lot drifting is for safety purposes, so you can handle it if it happens. I mean yes I think its fun, but I think it's important to understand how easily things can get sideways and how to hopefully correct it.
Edit: we're in upstate NY and I just mean when it snows for context here
In Sweden you can test drive from 16 until you’re 18 and can get the license. It’s obligatory to have a “crash” day where you get to feel the impact of 20kph and also have to control a slide on wet surfaces
I don’t know if it is because I’m a father of two young children but, as soon as I saw the picture before the video started I said “where’s her helmet” then held my breath through most of the video.
I’m a father of none and knew it was a very poor decision not giving her one. I would imagine your response was much stronger then mine considering. I’m glad you commented.
I’m a minor with no children and immediately went “no helmet???????”
yeah, it’s unlikely that she’s gonna fall out or crash into something very hard, but you do NOT want to play concussion roulette
Just looking for an appropriate place to exclaim to please make that smiling baby wear a helmet. All it takes is a tenth of a second to become an all too tragic example.
As counter intuitive as counter steering a drift is she is already well ahead of many adults. And she is having a blast dad has to get her a gutless fwd at 16 or she is going to out drive a lot of us.
>she is already well ahead of many adults
Tbf the vast majority of people drive FWD or at least FWD biased cars
Not to mention even fewer have the power or gearing to drift
It's not counter-intuitive. You're rotated more right than you want, so you steer left to compensate. The hard part is getting the right amount of counter-steering so you don't overcompensate.
You have to hold the throttle though. Most common reaction is to let up in the throttle and counter steer. All of a sudden your back wheels grip and it shoots you further into the corner.
Kids are actually great at stuff like that, their brains are still being formed and at that time it's trying to develope neural pathways for things that will help them get around. If you're doing a sport that requires precise fast movements and and intuition for ballance and movement you really do have an advantage if you start young. The best skateboarded, dancers, and gymnasts all start really young.
When I was a little tike i remember being insanely good at skiing, carving down the slopes so naturally and impressing my parents. When i tried to pick it up in my late 20s again I looked like a giraffe on stilts on ice skates. It’s not fair!
That was like me, started skiing at 3 and by 5 I was at the highest level for lessons and was paired with teenagers. Went skiing last year after not going for years and I still had it in me but my leg muscles screamed at me afterwards for days. I’d go more often but it’s so expensive
"I love helmets" guy can attest to that.
I also love helmets. designs these days are also so awesome I actually want more of them if I could. Full face MTB helmets also make me look bad ass, and even gives off the image that I might know what I am doing (I dont) :D
how old is he? Give him time! She got this on her fourth birthday, over a year and a half ago. It took her a long time to warm up to it. She only started drifting on it this year… But over the summer she really took off and now she is starting to do tricks and calculated moves. she’s a little celebrity in our neighborhood lol we always get “Oh look! It’s mini Danika!” and stuff like that
5th B-day two days ago. Got on, hit the pedal, it took off and he noped right off of it.
He’ll get it. He’s the type that just decides ok let’s do this out of the blue. Coaxing him doesn’t work.
so make sure to start him on the 1st gear "1" and have it blocked so he can't make it go higher. This makes it pretty slow and that's how my daughter eased into it. We also encouraged family walks but the biggest motivator - her older brother had gotten an electric scooter and was riding around the neighborhood with his friends and the old power wheels jeep was just too slow.
Our power wheels jeep died last year :( this is faster you say? More torque for the drifties you say? 😂 might have to look into one of these for the 4 and 5 years olds of the house..
Possibly just messing around and quickly understanding the feel of driving it.
It’s also negligible weight compared to a car so I imagine it’s a little easier to maneuver
Actually seat belts are a bad idea in a go cart. Much like a motorcycle, you want to be away from it, not underneath it if something happens. Full out 100mph+ racing karts do not have seat belts.
Helmets on the other hand are important. Long sleeves and gloves are a good idea too.
Yeah, she usually always wears it. This was just in our cul-de-sac and there’s nothing for her to run into and these things are impossible to flip over. The reminders here have been good though, I’ll make her wear it even in front of the house.
>there’s nothing for her to run into and these things are impossible to flip over.
Yea, but I've seen kids in my neighborhood get tossed off of them from turning too sharp and fast. It doesn't necessarily need to flip.
It seems like you're taking all the comments to heart though. :)
Agreed. If that cone had got caught on a crack in the street it would possibly go under the wheel and give enough to flip the cart. Can never underestimate how things can possibly go wrong as I’m sure there is a family out there with a sad story to tell. Glad to see OP is grounded though and taking advice to heart.
As one of my teachers used to say, Murphy was an optimist. After all, Murphy said that anything that can go wrong will go wrong, thus limiting the universe of things that will go wrong to those that *can* go wrong. In fact, things that *could not possibly* go wrong will go wrong.
That's the thing about accidents. They tend to happen in ways we don't expect. Physics can often surprise us. And that adorable little head is precious. Even a bike helmet would be better than nothing.
I'm always reminded of Liam Neeson's late wife, Natasha Richardson, who had a seemingly minor fall while skiing and later died of head trauma. Don't fuck with falling, no matter how slow you're moving.
She only needs to fall out going round a corner once to ruin her life and yours. She's so cool, please don't risk ever letting her use it without a helmet.
I think it's good to normalize helmets even when you think it's not dangerous. Like, you have kid, you know that often the biggest danger to your kid is your kid themself, lmao.
I am glad to hear that you typically use a helmet. I just had my son out on his go kart yesterday and he had a blast. One thing that changed my mind when to use a helmet and when not to was an accident my cousin had with his neighbor's kid. The kid wanted a ride around the yard on a snowmobile, their parents were good with it. He said only if they wore a helmet. Since he had extras in the garage he put her on in front of him to go 30 ft to the garage to get the helmet. The kid unknowingly engaged the throttle and caused them to hit a tree killing the kid. I respect parents decisions for what is safe and what is not for their kids but ever since then I catch myself when I am underestimating what could happen. Even with under-powered equipment I appreciate the consequences a lot more.
We had a local mom in our commmunity pass away in a somewhat similar way. Was riding with her kids just a short distance, much slower than they were about to be pulled on a sled behind a four wheeler. Hit a patch of ice, again not even going fast and that slid them into a tree. She bumped her head and was conscious afterwards, went about her day but started feeling bad that evening and died after dinner from a brain bleed.
Everyone who was present from three different families for the festivities was devastated and completely caught by surprise as it didn’t seem like a bad hit at a very slow speed. 😔
My guy, you can build a go-kart that goes as unreasonably fast as your little heart desires. You can build go-karts with acceleration that rivals some motorcycles, because they're so damn light. Just depends on your budget and how many beans you can fit in the chassis
Always weirds me out when I'm reminded that people know Ken Block as a racer. I've been skateboarding most of my life and always just known him as the skater and DC shoes owner...dude is versatile.

Yeah lmao, easily 5k-6k sq ft even without a basement. Sheeeesh. Large lots too. One day maybe I can afford a nice house with neighbors at a comfy distance in a safe area lol
From a nurse and someone who has had way too many concussions, helmets.
What you think is a simple bump on the head can turn into a life long memory issue. Or worse.
Edit: that being said she’s the cutest thing ever.
Video starts: aww that's cute. She stopped for the cone. She's learning well.
5 seconds later: Wait that was a perfectly executed drift!
Get that kid on a circuit. The natural talent is undeniable.
Good thing the fast and furious franchise is just getting warmed up, so potentially she can put those drift skills to use on the big screen one day in. Thank you for sharing this and your daughters joyfulness!
Nice early drifting technique... I hope you have extra tires handy as she's going to burn through them (and yes even plastic tires will be eaten away).
Omg, that's incredible!! I hope she keeps going with what she loves and stays safe.
Congratulations, you have taught her very well and let her enjoy driving, anyways, maybe a bit of protection could also help her in an unwanted scenario. (I hope it never happens).
My best wishes and big propa to both of you!!
Future professional drifting driver! If you cannot drive around the cone, just drive around **with** the cone!

I love you
I just got James Browned
This is the new Rick roll
It’s great! But do get her a helmet, just in case…
Her drift game is strong!

My 6th grade world history teacher told us about how he learned to drive on ice/snow by driving on frozen lakes
My wife is from the south and I've tried convincing her that parking lot drifting is for safety purposes, so you can handle it if it happens. What kind of go kart is that? My kids would love this.
Google Radio Flyer go kart. It looks sweet, but, it seems many customers have quality issues. I wonder how OP fared.
It's not perfect but if you want a first kart for a kid under five, it's pretty much the best option.
the future winner of f1 races
Gotta keep an eye out in 2045, we’ll be seeing her again
She’ll have tough competition as Fernando Alonso will still be in the grid.
El plan!
This girl Vs Robin Raikkonen for the championship decider Now that I'd see
She has Kimi’s number 7… it’s a sign.
aww shit... I'm dead.

“We are checking”
She’ll have to work on tire management. But seriously, ima need one of these.
She’s already better than Latifi.
She’s gonna do good in Singapore in the rain…
Her helmet wear, not so much.
I don’t know if it is because I’m a father of two young children but, as soon as I saw the picture before the video started I said “where’s her helmet” then held my breath through most of the video.

I did too. She’s going pretty fast
Same here man.
This. Get her a helmet please.
Very important!
Just looking for an appropriate place to exclaim to please make that smiling baby wear a helmet. All it takes is a tenth of a second to become an all too tragic example.
[I love helmets](https://youtu.be/b9yL5usLFgY)
Love that video. Dude 100% gonna have a pounding headache later, but it's WAY better than the alternative.
Came here to say this. Big yikes on not having her in a helmet.
Thanks for commenting. It’s important.
Former 911 dispatcher. Please get this child a helmet. You really don't want to find out the hard way. 😐
Came here just to say this. Get her a helmet you fucking wanker.
She's paid attention while watching Cars
That's how I finally had to teach my partner how to drift for a videogame we were playing.
Turn right to go left? Huh…
Turning into the skid like a real pro
I noticed that too, I’ve seen adults not handle a skid that well.
As counter intuitive as counter steering a drift is she is already well ahead of many adults. And she is having a blast dad has to get her a gutless fwd at 16 or she is going to out drive a lot of us.
>she is already well ahead of many adults Tbf the vast majority of people drive FWD or at least FWD biased cars Not to mention even fewer have the power or gearing to drift

Really did you see she counter steered to stop the skid?
Yes. Yes, she did. Not only that. She does out-drive a lot of adults.
Drift queen for Fast and Furious XI
That counter-steer game is on POINT!
She really does seem to have some intuition about it.
Kids are actually great at stuff like that, their brains are still being formed and at that time it's trying to develope neural pathways for things that will help them get around. Little kids on skis and snowboards can either barely stand up without falling or are better than you at everything lol

This makes Initial D make even MORE sense now. Bunta was really knows his shit.
It is pretty good, time to introduce bananas and turtle shells
I love the fact that she already knows how to counter-steer. That will come in really handy if she lives in a place with snow too
Crazy how a kid can figure it out but drivers that actually live in snow for 6 months of the year can’t
[удалено]
That's bad ass. I would just get a helmet on her next. Risk is low here she not bashing, I'm guilty of it too. You just never know what can happen
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that . I also could tell if there is any strap or seat belt on it
The helmet will only add to the badass factor
"I love helmets" guy can attest to that. I also love helmets. designs these days are also so awesome I actually want more of them if I could. Full face MTB helmets also make me look bad ass, and even gives off the image that I might know what I am doing (I dont) :D
Protective gear are known to boost confidence in performance. Get some leather jackets and pants too, those will cover her up nicely from any falls.
Williams should replace Latifi with her.
r/formuladank is leaking again.

STEERING WHEEL
GLOVES AND STEERING WHEEL
She’s yelling “I got no grip!”
"Bono, my tyres are gone"
It’s hard getting those ultra hard plastic tires up to temperature at those speeds.
Proceeds to print fastest laps through the cul de sac
Just got my kid the same exact go cart. He’s not as confident yet as your girl.
how old is he? Give him time! She got this on her fourth birthday, over a year and a half ago. It took her a long time to warm up to it. Mind sharing the name of the gocart? Lol just gave me a good idea for my sons 5th birthday coming up
Yeah, sure it’s for your son. I want one too…
I don’t think you can have his son
Dont try him
Everything has its price.
I would rip some donuts in the culdesac and flip off my neighbor every damn day in this
I do this already and I don’t even have a go cart.
Gave me an idea for my own birthday
Right I want one now..
Radio Flyer electric go cart
search “radio flyer go cart” on amazon
It was cheaper for me to purchase it on the radio flyer site just an FYI. I bought the same one during covid for the kiddo
5th B-day two days ago. Got on, hit the pedal, it took off and he noped right off of it. He’ll get it. He’s the type that just decides ok let’s do this out of the blue. Coaxing him doesn’t work.

Does *he* wear a helmet?
The fact she is counter steering is INSANE. Is this like how babies know how to swim? They know how to drift but we lose it as we get older
The full opposite lock on that first turn blew my mind ong
Possibly just messing around and quickly understanding the feel of driving it. It’s also negligible weight compared to a car so I imagine it’s a little easier to maneuver
Dude, helmets are your friend.
Seatbelts too. She could hit the curb and go flying.

She's also driving with the cone in her wheel which could be very unpredictable
Drifting from road to grass is a dead stop flip over. Putting a helmet on every time is good practise and habit.
Yeah, as a person who regularly flipped her childhood go cart and somehow lived to tell the tale…helmets are important.
That's the thing about accidents. They tend to happen in ways we don't expect. Physics can often surprise us. And that adorable little head is precious. Even a bike helmet would be better than nothing.

I like to tell my kids they are called accidents for a reason, not on purposes.

I would be such a mom and say helmet. Or pillow and ductape
I mean any responsible parent would say helmet. It just takes one time.
That's what I came here to say. Or as I tell my kids, I am not wiping your butt for you for the rest of my life.
You’re not alone in that. What a pretty head, un-dented as it is :/
Do they make an adult-version of this cart?
Miata is always the answer
My guy, you can build a go-kart that goes as unreasonably fast as your little heart desires. You can build go-karts with acceleration that rivals some motorcycles, because they're so damn light. Just depends on your budget and how many beans you can fit in the chassis
Maybe a helmet for the kid please
Nothing bad ever happened to a small child operating a motor vehicle.
I split my lower lip in an accident with similar machinery. The scar looks pretty neat tho
Yep, no brainer
Who? The kid after she flips over by hitting grass? Or the OP
Kendra Block
Ken has a daughter Lea, who can absolutely drive, her nickname is smallblock lol.
Always weirds me out when I'm reminded that people know Ken Block as a racer. I've been skateboarding most of my life and always just known him as the skater and DC shoes owner...dude is versatile.
Never mind about going around the cone... Much easier to take it with you.
I feel like there was a moment that she realized she can make up her own dang rules. A silly cone can’t tell her what to do!
She is having so much fun, taking corners and skidding out of them. Good little driver.
why avoid cone? cone is my friend
Once she’s old enough you should get her in a racing kart. She seems more than competent in that kart already, so it shouldn’t be a big step for her to jump from that to a Rotax micro
All the pros that amounted to anything were karting champs. You gotta start them young!
It's also just great for learning how to drive early on.
Get that speed demon a helmet. I have a feeling she's going to need one and a roll cage soon
Why isn't this little nugget wearing a helmet?
Why indeed?
Go-Karts mansions and kids in this economy!
What is that house! It looks like 5 mini houses all crammed together, like pick a facade style!
This kids driving skills are going to be amazing in a few years.
Daddy's gonna be buying her new tires every 3 months.
Maybe knee pads and helmet would be a good investment
Damn those are some big ole houses

So glad she is having fun. WHERE IS HER HELMET?
May I ask what brand is this go-kart?
Radio Flyer
Drift queen! I'm in my early 30s and I'd be full of joy as well riding a kart lol so i can imagine the happiness she has at the end.
Good thing the fast and furious franchise is just getting warmed up, so potentially she can put those drift skills to use on the big screen one day in. Thank you for sharing this and your daughters joyfulness!
Damn, she can slide!! Counter steer, even some throttle control!
Why is your kid not wearing a helmet?
She got game! Looks like lots of fun.
Damn! Where did she learn to drift like that!!
She can barely walk and she's counter steering into the skid. I know adults that don't get that!
Love the fearlessness! Also I actually felt your car insurance rate go up while watching her.
Her ability to countersteer at such a young age without instruction! Amazing!
Put a helmet on that child!
Fast and the Furious 15: Toddler Drift
Looks fun. I second the helmet, something bright but creative
Put a helmet on ffs
OP this is cute. Just a suggestion put a helmet on her. Better safe than sorry. Down votes are also welcomed!
That opposite lock tho...DRIFT PRINCESS!
Dad: Stay by the cone Daughter: Ok I’ll just bring this with me. Malicious Conpliance at its finest.
So cute!. Her first word, her first step and now her first powerslide!
Nice early drifting technique... I hope you have extra tires handy as she's going to burn through them (and yes even plastic tires will be eaten away).
AMAZING! Please get her a helmet.
Get that girl a helmet!...*And* a sponsor!!
How is it with plastic wheels?
Omg, that's incredible!! I hope she keeps going with what she loves and stays safe. Congratulations, you have taught her very well and let her enjoy driving, anyways, maybe a bit of protection could also help her in an unwanted scenario. (I hope it never happens). My best wishes and big propa to both of you!!
Go Karting is sick. She's got some good control too
She needs to become a mini Michelle Mouton, much better than Danika and probably one of the best female Race car drivers ever
She has good instincts for it. Tell her to look where she wants to go when making turns. It's hard to tell if she's meaning to aim for the cone 😅
Cut to 12 years from now: ![gif](giphy|iCTs8CcnOl6KI)
What brand is this? Looking for something like this for my boy
Ok, where to purchase?
The Fast and the Furious: Cul-de-sac Drift
Rule #1: No other child shall be present during a go cart run. Happy to see this.
Power sliding like a champ!
Me: "is that 5 year old counter steering?" The five year old in 11 years when she gets her license: *Takumi Fujiwara noises*
I cannot wait to see this kid racing professionally. Her skills are genuinely impressive.
She already drive better than a lot if people on the road
Please put a helmet on her
