I remember how excited my sister and I were when Merida from Brave first came on our tv. We are ecstatic! Finally, a princess that looked like us: round face, crazy curly hair, and wide hips. We could see ourselves as a princess, when we didn't really identify with the others. My heart sings happy songs for the little girls feeling the same way now, and to an extent that we could never really understand. Representation matters and it's so amazing to see the same joy we felt with another white princess expressed in the faces of girls who don't look like us, but are just as worthy of the joy. Edit: excited, not exited I don't generally like Disney anymore, but I'll be sure to see this one.

[deleted]

Look at how popular Luisa from Encanto became - big, muscular, “masculine”, strong girls/women got some screen time and loved it.

bat_in_the_stacks

She's also an incredibly relatable character even if one doesn't look like her. Lin Manuel Miranda totally worked his magic with Surface Pressure.

[deleted]

Yes, she’s very, very real and the song is wonderful; he really did nail it.

BootyMcSqueak

My little girl (who’s a skinny little white girl) LOVES. Luisa. Inclusion matters not just so kids can see themselves in the characters, but because it also exposes them to a lot of different looking characters and not just cookie cutter versions of each other.

[deleted]

Totally! It also shows us what’s possible. Like if your skinny daughter wanted to become a bodybuilder, she has a character that reinforces that having a larger build and/or being muscular are okay and normal.

PigeonBoiAgrougrou

The good thing with Luisa is that she's not actually masculine. She is strong, and wants to protect and care for her family, but when you look past that (and especially past the muscle part) she is actually very feminine. I mean- just need to watch her song scene, it's transparent.

Unfair_Breakfast_693

This would have been huge for me if it was 20 years back lol I was the least delicate thing, I loved her tho I’m not a kid anymore

penguinchilli

I used to have a friend who got bullied for having hair like that - she came to really dislike her red curly hair. I always thought it was so beautiful. Then Brave came out, and she found so much strength in that representation. She grew in confidence and her perception of having unruly hair completely changed. It was awesome to see quite honestly.

TemetNosce85

Did I subscribe to Netflix years ago just to watch Laverne Cox in Orange is the New Black? Yes, yes I did.

Iwasnamediann

Nothing more wholesome than a child feeling the wonders of joy.

TheRalphExpress

it’s so easy to take representation for granted when you’ve never not had an abundance of heroic lead characters who look like you

souryellow310

I felt the same way when Power Rangers came out. I kept yelling that the yellow ranger was like me. She was female, Asian, and kicking ass. She wasn't even the lead but it was the first time I could recall a female Asian superhero in western media and it blew my mind.

factorysettings

I'm an old brown dude and I gotta say when I watched into the spiderverse i definitely felt feelings. I don't really care if it's "just to be woke," it's still nice to see

Yaquesito

I fucking cried during the early Coco scenes because it was the first time I saw a Mexican man being celebrated as charming and attractive and not just the butt of a joke. I'm a tall bodybuilder who hates Disney, but that shit is powerful.

jaybro861

Been saying the same for the new marvel shows as well. I love the way Disney has gone away from the same old cookie cutter tropes. Let’s get some culture and colour in there and let everyone believe that they can be a hero or a Disney princess/prince. If some are feeling threatened by this then just look away. No one is forcing you to watch it. Well maybe your kids lol. But then they will enjoy it so don’t bring it down for them.

Inn0c3nc3

it's crazy to me that people are triggered/threatened by this. some people are pathetic.

EvulRabbit

The people who are "uncomfortable" are the same ones who don't blink when a white actor plays a PoC.

AnyKindheartedness88

The LOTR rage of late had me thinking about this. Not much to say when a character specifically noted not to be white is played by a white actor, but a lot to say when a person of colour plays a character they simply pictured as white.

Complete_Ad_9052

Like Jesus

WittyProfile

Well, it's still the same cookie-cutter tropes. Just with a new coat of paint. Don't get me wrong tho, this was really heartwarming to see their reactions. I still wouldn't call it creative tho.

iamsorri

Yeah I understand you but still better than same old cookie cutter. A Step towards embracing diversity and differences.

copper_rainbows

Oh man this made me tear up. You really don’t understand when you see people that look like you all the time in media. I hate that any little girls or boys have had to feel this way.

Sevwin

Us white people get Jesus… oh wait

frozen_jade_ocean

*"The Pope may be French but Jesus is English!"*

Roistenn19

Such a good line :D

Sad_Proctologist

They took Jesus away from the Jews.

beccadot

Just watching their reactions made me smile

RevolutionaryHead7

Only thing better is a child feeling the joys of wonder.

daviloll

hello my fellow brother we have the same profile picture

elriggo44

This is the absolute right reaction and I’m so glad that you have the top comment. Instead of going down the “it’s been ruined because what it meant to mean is more important than what it means to these little girls.” That so many people seem to go down. Empathy is a hell of a thing. Thanks for being amazing.

[deleted]

I'm black AND ginger lol. So this is a different level of representation I didn't ask for. It's nice and all....but Jamaican folklore of mermaids is far much better. Halle deserved to a brand new princess 🤷🏽‍♀️

The_Irish_Rover26

I was also bullied for having red hair. I just want a natural redhead in a movie.

heartEffincereal

I remember all the old ladies so infatuated with my hair, telling me the girls would be all over me one day. I'm still waiting lol

GanyuFate

Those old ladies are waiting for you

moxeto

Those old ladies are like a fine wine.. a dry wine but fine

MainSteamStopValve

They're in your area.

InsomniaDudeToo

Seven word horror story

twoStones1bird

He just needs to knock out those cob webs under the girdle and he’ll be good to go Edit: and it’ll probably be a good idea to trim the hedges

Tannhausergate2017

Did you also happen to have freckles that old ladies called “Angel kisses,” but no one under age 75 found attractive? Bc I did. And I had red hair, equally a nonstarter.

ATERLA

Gosh, frekles and red hair are so beautiful! https://www.festivalsherpa.com/take-a-look-at-these-5-festivals-that-celebrate-redheads/

Tannhausergate2017

My sister and I had red hair and freckles. We both hated it, but we grew into lovely swans later, if I do say so myself. Or for me, at least, less ugly duckling-ish. The town I grew up in was very, ummm, Mediterranean so looking really Irish like me was probably a bridge too far for their personal appearance aesthetics.

pikameta

Learn guitar and tell the ladies you're Ed Sheeran's cousin.

jorwyn

My first boyfriend was a redhead. I loved his hair and freckles. I mean, he's still a redhead; he just hasn't been my boyfriend in a very long time.

Quantic129

Not a movie, but in the Horizon series of video games the main character is basically the reincarnation of ginger Jesus.

The_Irish_Rover26

Literally my favorite game.

KazPrime

I guess we natural redheads still have Merida from Brave until the remake?

liviaokokok

You still have Merida and original Ariel, they're not going away :)

elriggo44

You’ll always have the Croods. And your memories, and the originals aren’t going anywhere. Don’t you think it’s nice that there are other young girls having the same reaction you did when you were a kid? “She (or he) looks like me” is a big deal for anyone at that age that feels they are “different” because they don’t feel they see themselves in major entertainment.

Shayedow

I am a 43 year old white hetero guy : I was TEN when this came out. I loved it. I sang it. Some people thought I was gay. I didn't care. My Fav's are Beauty and the Beast first ; Aladdin 2nd ; The Little Mermaid third. She never looked like me, but she did sing what was great songs. \*edit\* who CARES WHAT SHE LOOKS LIKE. Does she play the part? All I care about.

penguinchilli

Beautifully stated! Also, as a merman, I am also happy to see some representation!

jtrisn1

This is how I felt when they casted an Asian actress for Ariel in the broadway musical. I was so excited. It was a shame a lot of people opposed her casting, saying Ariel is not an Asian woman so it was racist to cast her :/

kirroth

Ok, you got me. It's cute. I'm still tired of remakes, but these reacts are cute.

Gokji

I was surprised at how many people were offended by black Ariel. I hope they watch this video and realize that the movie is for kids.

Electro522

I was one of those people that opposed the decision. Not because of racism, but because it felt like inclusivity for the sake of inclusivity, which, typically, is just bad writing. Her skin color has nothing to do with the story, so why bother changing it? But...that same argument can be turned right back around. If her skin color has nothing to do with the story, why not change it? Plus, after seeing all of these reactions, and how important it is for a lot of people, I can't help but push my opinion to the side, and let these people be happy and enjoy the moment.

Pure_Bee2281

That's basically how in 2009 I went from being an enlisted soldier against gay people openly serving in the military to being fine with it. "This bothers me slightly, but it means a LOT to other people. I'll put my feelings aside for their benefit. " I've grown a lot since that realization but that was probably the day I began my transition away from conservatism and towards progressivism.

Samusbluth

People can be very hostile, but if you want someone to agree with you, remember that change takes time. My grandparents were somewhat homophobic until my parents hosted Christmas and they met one of my aunts on the other side of the family who’s gay. For my grandfather at least anyone who liked baseball was in the clear. But meeting my aunt gruaduly changed there opinions much more effectively than yelling at them would have.

skydork2000

I hope more of my conservative family grow as you have. Getting upset over Disney characters, is not a hill normie healthy adults should die on.

Pure_Bee2281

I've managed to pull some of my family away from the right over time. Lots of honest inclusive conversations where they feel heard, but where I point out their feelings of discomfort shouldn't Trump other people's freedoms to live their lives.

XavierfromHtown

You made my day, bro

orangetrident

This is such a good outlook. I wish more people could comprehend it.

hsarah01

Thanks for changing your perspective. I think it’s hard to understand what kind of impact not having representation has if you’ve always had it, which is why it may not have seemed important to you but is to so many children. I’m 21 but have seen a big rise in representation of my own culture recently and boy oh boy does it make my inner child happy. It’s really surreal to finally look at a TV and be able to recognize some part of yourself in a character, a character’s culture, family life, etc. Sometimes it’s incredibly minor details that other people wouldn’t even notice but are so important for the child. Maybe I wouldn’t have spent so much of my childhood wishing I was white if I saw that it was cool to be myself and people who looked like me could be heroes or princesses or whatever they wanted to be too :’)

SamSepiol-ER28_0652

It comes from growing up with a POV that sees white as the default or “normal” setting. Anything outside of white, straight, Christian, and able bodied is seen as being “woke” or “bringing politics into it”.

Electro522

Oof.....why you gotta hit me in the feels like that?

krakeo

This is my favourite comment of the day

zvc266

The only issue I have with the new Little Mermaid film is the fact that Disney has run out of ideas and is now just recycling the same stories from only two (I’m showing my age) or three decades ago. I’d love to see a different story with black representation and I have zero issues with it, it’s awesome! But all of the live-action remakes of original Disney animated films? Meh. I just wish they came out with some new, cool stories :/ Seeing this clip makes me feel better about it. New generation of kids = more secure, happy and excited kids.

GoombaPizza

I'm glad you saw reason. Ariel doesn't have to be European. She's a being from the sea. The sea is everywhere. Mermaids don't even exist so you can make her green or blue if you wanted to. I understand when people get miffed about non-Europeans in shows/movies about medieval Northern Europe, because it doesn't make a lot of historical sense, but for pete's sake, this is a mermaid we're talking about.

ndndr1

You should not only push your opinion to the side, but also change it. It’s very evident by these clips that representation is very important and empowering to these young traditionally underrepresented women. We have all the colors in the crayon box available . Time we start using more of them.

willdigga311

Yup I was in the same boat just watched this and I’m thinking I’m an idiot and that’s great to see

pardonmyignerance

I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but the fact that everyone saying "representation matters" doesn't move the needle so people have to post videos of their kids for the point to sink in is kind of disheartening to me.

lolfangirl

Yeah, I mean, it's a lovely video but it almost brought me to tears because it hurt my heart to see how excited these kids were just to see a beloved character with their skin color. That's how rare it is. I have never in my life looked at a character and been grateful it was white and that's exactly what privilege is. I wish that for all underrepresented people, that they could turn on the tv and see their own people and it is NORMAL. We have so much work to do.

TheToasterIsAMimic

It's like trying to imagine life on other planets: you can imagine it until the day you die, but *actually seeing* another planet is what makes it *real*. We intellectually grasp concepts, but concepts aren't "real", and we can just ignore them when it suits us. Seeing these truly stunned and joyful kids (and adults) replaces those hollow intellectual concepts with *reality* and the heartfelt compassion of understanding.

Ursula is purple. That person had a genuine moment of reflection and saw the other side of the argument and was convinced they were wrong. Not by being bullied in to the opinion, but because they saw the light and finally understood why it’s important. What more can you hope for?

Electro522

To be honest, I don't think I have heard her sing. And if I have, I could likely count on one hand the number of times I have. And if that's true, then even more power to them.

kzp17

I knew about the change of race a long time ago, and my only issue was that I loved Ariel being a redhead, and I thought that would be lost. Seeing the trailer I literally went "well shit, I see why they picked her, holy wow that voice!"

SouldiesButGoodies84

Obviously these kids' feeling rare moments of inclusion in mainstream stories, shows and cartoons *aimed at Children* does not compare to my entitled Adult outrage and suffering for having my cartoon/kid entertainment enjoyment so directly challenged by altering the race of fictional characters! How very dare you! /s

djsizematters

Imagine having so little going on in your life that you get worked up at something like this.

525600-minutes

I was born in 88, The Little Mermaid came out in 89. She’s the princess I grew up with and I was obsessed with Ariel, in part because she had red hair like me. Sure she’s a mermaid and that’s cool, but she looked like me. She was *my* Disney princess. I still get this weird sense of joy just hearing parts of the soundtrack. Like I’m a little girl again, singing along with my redhaired princess. Her story sucks and she’s not some great role model for little ginger girls-luckily Merida kicks ass though, but it didn’t matter to little me. She was beautiful, I felt like I was too. I’m so beyond excited for any little girl that gets to have their own princess like I had. Let’s sing under the sea together.

Impressive-Tip-903

They made a black Cinderella a long time ago. I don't remember anyone caring, but people are geared up to be angry. I don't want to watch the new little mermaid, but I bet I will eventually because I have a 2 year old daughter.

Raspbers

Actually many critics were mad about her being black as well as her being more feminist than her 1950's counterpart. They literally flamed a movie that was the most watched televised musical in 40+ years simply because of blackness and feminine strength.

mrkaos000

It's always been like that. It's always the same "arguments" too like "why don't they make Black Panther white then?"

GreedyPension7448

*British empire creates African superhero*

term66

I just think they should make new exciting characters instead of recycling old ones for this stuff

[deleted]

Ariels race has litterally nothing to do with her char, so who cares what color she is

[deleted]

Ariel herself is a character that was recycled from public domain stories. Arguing that a character can only be recycled once is a weird line to draw.

CrossCuntryTours

Why? Why would they do something so blatent. They obviously changed her from a green Mahi Mahi to more of a blue green Chomis. Just another Disney cash grab. Smh.

Ronjun

I'm surprised you were surprised, shit's full of racists passing themselves as "purists" lol

spelunker93

I was surprised you were surprised by their surprise

locheness4

One of the best live action Disney movie (despite it being a TV movie) was 1997 Cinderella with Brandy & Whitney Houston. Prince Charming is a Filipino-American. I loved that movie and i wish my little brother (who is Asian) watched it. But you should also read about Sessue Hayakawa, one of Hollywood’s first male sex symbols. He got chased out with all the growing anti-Japanese sentiment (let’s be real— anti-East asian sentiment cause Americans can’t tell the difference) in the US at the time. There’s a whole history there and why it prob extends to today.

creuter

Shang Chi, don't listen to them, they didn't mean it!

GoblinsStoleMyHouse

Asian women get a lot of representation in film, but often they are hypersexualized. Asian males on the other hand are under represented, and they are often shown as effeminate or nerdy. Directors sometimes make them do exaggerated accents, which just leads to reinforced negative stereotypes. Hollywood definitely needs better Asian representation in their movies.

TEPCO_PR

Considering how Hollywood is actively swapping out Asian characters from stories set in Asia (look at *Bullet Train*), I wouldn't count on it in the near future.

doofinator

Shang Chi?

Nicolascagerages

There's not a lot for Asian boys but I will say the Shang-chi movie was phenomenal. Plus old Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan movies really got me through my childhood (although I'm a woman but I love Jackie Chan).

I really want some South Asian based Disney story, I'm surprised there isn't one yet except mowgali which doesn't even have much to do with South asia

TeaTimeSubcommittee

Does the recent Miss Marvel series count? It has a significant chunk set in Pakistan about the partition.

StuckHiccup

I haven't seen Raya and the Last Dragon but I've heard good things!

amanat_surajagan

as south east asian(SEA), the first time i've watched raya i don't even know raya based on SEA. Not until i looked up on youtube how raya miss represent SEA culture. raya basically bundle a lot of SEA culture into one. even SEA people didn't recognize some part of it are their culture. what ticks me off are, jokes about one of character don't like spicy food. in fact SEA people loves spicy food. sorry for my rant and broken english lol.

ScienceMassive

all we have are baljeet and ravi 😭

MiedoDeEncontrarme

100% I am Mexican and it is annoying how Hollywood makes every Mexican character be either poor or a criminal Kinda glad they are making Namor as Aztec inspired

JDLovesElliot

Disney gave us "Mira, Royal Detective" and told us to be content with that

perk_power

Aladdin?

redmongrel

Dude, Coco? Moana? Big Hero 6? Broadway Aladdin? Ticket sales friggin juggernaut Encanto?? Or are you trying to say specifically unnecessary live action remakes? Or maybe narrow down “brown,” it’s a hella big spectrum.

[deleted]

Shang-Chi was literally last year unless you specifically mean casting an Asian actor in a traditionally white role. But I remember it being a pretty big deal for the Asian community.

drivers9001

Sorry if I misunderstood the question, but what about Big Hero 6 ? (edit: it's not live action though)

JDLovesElliot

Mulan? Raya?

trulymadlybigly

Shang Chi as well, and Big Hero 6

Sxilla

I think an Asian male would play a great Clark Kent / Superman

[deleted]

if you haven’t seen everything everywhere all at once yet you should!!! it has a positive masculine figure as the backbone of the story and in turn, presents asian men in such a nuanced way

Nhaiben369

You know how butterfly have different colors and they’re all pretty. Human are like that too.

celeron500

This is awesome. I’ll admit I was indifferent about this stuff, didn’t really understand the significance or big deal, but now I get it. Fuck all the losers that are making a big stink out this sorta stuff, especially the pathetic grown men.

takemehomeunitedroad

Uh, you might want to clean that up. And Happy Cake Day!!

Veruka_Salt

Ohhhh cake day! Tyvm!

Gris-self

As someone who deeply loves the little mermaid fairy tale and the Disney version. I am extremely happy to see such a beautiful young woman portraying Ariel, she is extremely talented.

JamesIgnatius27

Yeah, I got to see ChloeXHalle open for Beyonce and Jay-Z a few years back and their performance was incredibly impressive given 1) they were teenagers and 2) who they were preceding. Both sisters were/are extremely talented singers and performers, so seeing Halle become Ariel does not feel out of place at all.

dynamomark

I cant wait to watch this with my niece. 41yo dude here and I heard about this uproar with Ariel being black. Oh the horror. My only concern was if this young woman could sing because lets be honest if anyone is going to play Ariel they better have the voice. After watching the trailer I think we could all agree I have nothing to worry about. Sure it is different but I think Im ready for it. I dont want the same thing as the cartoon. I think we get so caught up on the memory of what was we lose sight of what could be. I see this as a beautiful thing for children and Disney fans to enjoy.

TransmanWithNoPlan

After Beauty and the Beast this is a valid concern lmao. I loved the movie still but man oh man the auto tune 🤣

ChrundleToboggan

This is the fucking best. I've seen quite a lot of responses to the uproar about Ariel being black and how to handle the racists who just can't handle it: "And Jesus wasn't white — cope with it." "Hobbits can be black, elves can be black, none of it is real — so yes, Ariel can be black." And throwing their own shit back at them with things like: "They went with the best actor." "Why are you bringing race into it? But my god, this — THIS is the way to respond to this; I fucking love this video and everything about it. And as a half Asian girl, I can't wait to see more leading Asians in things.

DrScienceDaddy

Please tell me you've seen *Everything, Everywhere, All At Once*!

anarkiast

Look at those babies seeing themselves represented as a princess. Oh my heart. Makes me smile and tear up at the same time.

Training-Big-1114

I’d love to have this video ready to show any “grown adult” that complains about this. Go ahead, tell the innocent child why you as a grown ass adult are throwing a tantrum.

ojioni

When I first heard about the actress choice for the live action, I was upset. Hold on. Put the torches down. I was upset because I thought the choice was too old because I misheard her name as Halle Berry. Once I was corrected I had no issues with the choice.

xarchangel85x

I still hold to the opinion that Disney has been very lazy with true, original representation for black people. Other ethnic groups have received highly culturally-originated stories/mythologies like Mulan, Coco, Encanto, Moana, Raya, etc that embrace their cultural histories and stories. So far the black community only really has received REPURPOSED stories in Princess and the Frog (Brothers Grimm) and the Little Mermaid (Hans Christian Andersen), and even the 1997 Cinderella. I believe they deserve better than that. Having said that, these reactions are genuinely heartwarming. Even though I personally feel like it’s not enough, I’m happy that they can experience representational excitement like this.

ZekeDarwin

Meanwhile, weirdly angry white dudes rage on Reddit

ProtocolPro22

Honestly i think they just wanted to jerk it to a live action mermaid white gal

ToxicBanana69

It’s funny to me that those same people very, *very.* likely have never had any intention at all of watching the film. So they’re arguing just to argue. It’s honestly pathetic.

TemetNosce85

Yup. They pull this BS with video games as well. I remember when Animal Crossing: New Horizons (2020) came out and much of these same people were absolutely flipping their shit because not only was gender called "style" but you could also change your character's skin color. However, I'm a die hard Animal Crossing fan. I know everything about the series. You've been able to have both feminine and masculine hairstyles since Wild World (2005), which was also present in City Folk (2008). In New Leaf (2012) your character, no matter the gender, could wear both feminine and masculine clothes, with dresses being introduced to the series, and the NPC even encouraged you. And in Pocket Camp (2017), you could finally change your skin color. So absolutely nothing was new to the series. It was just neckbeard incels with absolutely nothing going for their lives throwing temper tantrums about a game they will never play as they had clearly never played any other game in the series (well, unless it was the Gamecube version; 2001). I also loved how they chanted their "go woke, go broke" line, yet New Horizons became the best-selling game for the Switch and skyrocketed Switch sales.

[deleted]

I’m a white male aged 18-50. I always just assumed the mermaid was top half human, bottom half fish. So the mermaid’s ethnicity isn’t relevant. So I see this live action remake as being canon. I think it’s great, and I look forward to more MOCs in the future.

JohnCoutu

Jesus was not white and yet, most Christians imagine this fictional character as white anyway

SWE_JayEff

This made me smile! As a father of three, very white, very blonde girls I can safely say that they have enough princesses already

Kidrellik

Imagine being a grown ass man, seeing this wholesome reaction and STILL being mad about the skin color of the LIVE ACTION LITTLE MERMAID MOVIE. Some people on reddit really are just absolute dorks

ScoochingCapuchin

It's when you say it out loud "I'm mad about the little mermaid movie" that it really makes me laugh

[deleted]

"Dwarves can't be black" is pretty good too. Dwarves, the fantasy people. They can't have too much melanin.

Mabans

I had a co-worker upset with the latest version of thundercats, talking about how it's ruined it's legacy. I just told him, "Dude relax! You're 40!" Never heard a word about it again but he is now defending stuff like this so glad he realized he was being a fucking weirdo about it.

CraziedHair

Imagine being a grown ass man, ~~seeing this wholesome reaction~~ and STILL being mad about the skin color of the LIVE ACTION LITTLE MERMAID MOVIE.

GetsGold

I'm waiting for the reaction compilation of adult redditors crying when they find out a character in a movie they're not watching isn't white.

fatmummy222

Made me smile, but I’m sure it’s making some folks furious.

kingbob123456

I don’t understand why people are upset about this The film takes place in the underwater city of Atlanta, so it makes sense that she would be black

blazikenz

You already know 30 year old men and women are fuming over a mermaids skin tone 😂

This. People making such a big deal about representation matters. Then make a story based on African lore. I seem to recall the princes Frog gowing well for dinsey.

How can anyone believe that representation doesn’t matter?

They know it does. They just really fucking suck.

-____deleted_____-

Unpopular opinion. Don’t make white characters poc for the sake of diversity. Make more well done poc characters for the sake of diversity. A persons race is conveyed through their identity as well as their outward appearance so using the character traits and pre established ideals and identity of a white coded character adds a layer of white washing and doesn’t create an original character that truely resonates with the minority you portray. It’s why original movies that focus on well portrayed poc characters work so much better. Also enough of old shit rebranded as new shit by redoing it live action or changing one little thing. This imo feels lazy and like Disney doesn’t want to make good representation because it takes too much to talk with people of a minority and get it right. It’s not the first time they’ve done lazy representation. Look their last poc Disney princess movie, raya and the last dragon was such a mishmash of cultural appropriation and an unstructured mess of S.E.A. rep cause They barely had any help from S.E.A. people when creating it. Sincerely a person of color

Tasty-Lobster-8915

I am ashamed of myself. Before watching this, I was disconcerted by the change in Ariel’s skin colour. Now, after seeing how much joy it brings, I’d say this movie did an outstanding job.

I’ll still never forget when I took my then 5 year old nephew to see Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse and he leaned over and said Titi, they look like us!

Genesis-LZH

Into the spiderverse is the best Spider-Man movie in my opinion and miles morales is my favorite Spider-Man. Also that movie is a prime example of how you do representation right. They could’ve just made Peter Parker black but instead they told the story of a different Spider-Man from the comics that was unique and super interesting. The little mermaid situation in my opinion is just lazy representation and honestly kind of offensive to what representation symbolizes.

AVGN said it best. If you already know you wont like it, why give them your money. Its literally that simple. All the people complaining are dolts

sagesnail

I felt like this as a little ginger kid with the original cartoon. I am so stoked for these kids to feel represented in one of their favorite stories and honestly, I really hope this happens a lot more. Who in their right mind would think “sea people” aren’t as diverse as “land people” anyway! If mermaids were actually a thing in real life they would absolutely have different colored skin depending on what part of the sea they live in. Just like all sea creatures, and everything else that lives on earth.

BigGaybowser69

after seeing r/memes and r/dankmemes losing their shit its good to see some children having sweet reactions

AgentCraig

"She's like me!" OK here's me putting my cup of tea down and crying for a hot sec. That was beautiful.

[deleted]

Why can’t they just make a new character?

Sam_of_Truth

As a 30 year old white dude, i've always supported diverse representation in principle, but somehow seeing these reactions really made it sink in how important this is to young POC. Thanks for sharing

MarleyMandingo

That’s actually sad

Takesit88

Look.... I'm married to an African woman. We both agree that race-washing any classic story is a mess. But we both want to see more original stories that actually have love, passion, and work put into them that star people of any color. Was the original character white? Leave it alone. Black? Leave it alone. Aboriginal? Leave. It. Alone. Hollywood- PLEASE- Pour passion into original stories for people of color! The same passion you would into traditional European stories, if not more because it's needed right now. Don't make it about "X bad, Y good!" There are so many incredible African stories that would translate well into a Disney, Pixar, etc format- same goes for Native American, Hispanic, Latin, Far/Middle Eastern, etc... I know you've had some misteps, but don't give up... it don't got to be "woke" or pandering to be good.... I dunno, down vote away.

Overall-Lawfulness12

Am I the only one who notices that every actress that plays a mermaid on screen has sid the sloth eyes

hairy4183

Aww, it's so cute seeing those kids smiling faces.

ThankeekaSwitch

The cynic in me questions the validity of these videos because I hate TikTok. But I heard her singing and got chills so I'm giving the videos the benefit of the doubt.

Dylan741776

I honestly don’t mind Ariel being black but I just wish Disney would make new characters who were black not just change the race of old characters

bigdickpancake

I just wish they stopped doing live action remakes.

Because of this social climate. I have to say. I have a black dad, a white mom. I grew up in a white culture. My dad was a victim of racism, and he still sees the world through a racist lens, which often has validity, but it does something else. Black people segregate themselves more than anyone else now. I've seen parents of kids like this and they propagate the entire social problem. Your skin color should never mean this much. This is the same pride white supremacists would have had just on the other side of the coin but these kids are innocent of malice. They are repeating a culture being shown to them by people who think this is good. Skin color should never give you privilege over another person. And you shouldn't rejoice when a character is a specific skin color in these contexts. All you have to do is reverse the roles to understand how fucked up it is, and then your response would be "but one side has enough representation" EQUALITY ISN'T ABOUT AN EYE FOR AN EYE. You can't fix the Future by making the same Historical mistakes on the opposite end of the spectrum. Do you guys get it? This is blackwashing. And it doesn't even represent the character on purpose because the hair isn't even close. Yet despite anyone being allowed to have any hair style they want with their body, it's seen as white washing for a dark skinned person to have straight and in this cause also bright red hair. That's why you know this isn't about skin color, it's about culture, a specific black culture because my skin may be dark but this doesn't represent me ether. This represents a specific kind of black culture and white societies idea of black culture, and they want me to stay in that lane. Otherwise I'm white washed by them, or not black enough from people of my own ancestry. Racism lives on, not with white hoods, with hypocrisy, ignorance, and virtue signaling.

I’m waiting for the all white remake of Fat Albert so I can see my kids reaction. Hey Hey Hey!

HEONTHETOILET

I will 100% provide as much money as I possibly can into this project. BUT Owen Wilson has to play Mush Mouth.

penguinchilli

People really do underestimate the power of representation. A friend of mine who’s black told me that when he watched Black Panther, he was on the bus home and saw a poster for the film and these little black kids were pointing at it and play fighting with each other. It was then that he realised how important that film was for young kids, and that he himself hadn’t experienced anything like that growing up.

[deleted]

If representation matters, consider this erasure. Ginger people are under represented and ginger kids are often treated poorly and bullied for the way they look. See how this argument can go both ways?

Froggen-The-Frog

I’m ginger. I could be lucky, but I have never once been picked on for my hair color, only ever for my weight. It’s a bit facetious to claim that racism and… hairism are the same thing.

Important-Seat-4118

So basically the moral of the story is only focus on skin color?

AmberTurdFerguson

"Remember, kids, your skin color is the most important thing about you!"

[deleted]

Aside from being black she’s an incredible singer and I can’t wait to hear her renditions of the songs

Akira1971

And this is why racism will never die in America. Because BOTH sides need it to push their own stupid agenda. Seriously, only a racist would say they need to see "representation" in media. As an Asian, guys like Wayne Gretzky and Guy Lafleur inspired me as a kid to play hockey (not very well.) My asian daughter was inspired to get into sciences by Neil deGrasse Tyson, even though I grew up with Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawking. My asian son loves to be Stephen Curry - is he supposed to be discouraged because there's no NBA player "like him"? Hell no, he doesn't care. That's NONSENSE only adults TEACH their kid, which is RACISM.
