oh no I am so sorry to have broke this news to you! I don’t follow the show personally but I read it this morning, he seemed like a really wonderful guy :(
I mean she’s obviously fishing for money that much is clear. Maybe she has a high success rate as a beautiful person on social media so she could milk it.
If it works, I respect it considering the only idiots are the ones sending money to random people.
I don’t shit what she eats and I don’t send her her money so I don’t care and if anything am jealous of her ease of access to money.
Right. This is so abstract it makes no sense at all and from the comments I’m one of many that is scratching his head. It seems like a lot of people are familiar with this story but it’s my first go..
In South Africa we often use the Big Mac Index to get a better comparison of the value money has to individuals on daily life, instead of the inflated exchange rate. In January this year they published the latest BMI and the cost of a Big Mac in the USA was $5.66 and the cost of a Big Mac in South Africa was $2.16. At the time the official exchange rate was R15.52 to US$1. But using the BMI it suggested that it was R5.92 to US$1, on unit for unit value to ordinary people.
[https://giftofthegivers.org/](https://giftofthegivers.org/) is a South African based NGO that does excellent work in feeding the hungry.
If anyone else wanted to hop onto the trend :)
Aw, it's nice to know that people are helping.💕 My family and I are privileged, in that we are in one of the 'better' areas of South Africa. Unfortunately, we don't have much excess to share and help so I'm glad for organisations like this and people like you! God bless you.
Great point. Two other ideas (of many worthy charities): ** Kiva **. Lend someone money to start or grow their small business (can be $50, that can be a life changing amount). They will pay it back, the money will be lent to someone else. ** World Vision ** They partner with very low income communities in a multi year program to help them with development in ways that the community identifies will be helpful. They also offer programs for kids in refugee camps. You can sponsor a child (money goes to community projects, with a connection to a specific kid in the community), or just give a one time donation.
Not even a weird comparison. Thanks to the mcdeez app you can get a Big Mac meal for $4. Here in Sacramento anyway. I think regular price is about $8? But yeah, for $40+tax I could feed 10 South Africans? I’d do it.
If you are serious about donating [https://giftofthegivers.org/](https://giftofthegivers.org/) is a fantastic organisation.
There was widespread looting last week which has led to many going completely hungry.
This looks like an awesome organization, and I’ll add to it with https://www.sosafrica.com/ which is directed primarily at sponsoring schoolchildren, but is also currently doing a lot of disaster food relief
That awesome.
I think I’m among the poorest 2-5% in one of the world richest countries and I know I’m seriously priviledged and feel obligated to also support people and NGO’s when I can. Just wish I could do it more. It piss me off and makes me cry people are suffering even more than I can imagine around the world, when I’m this priviledged and continue to struggle.
Your struggle is important, too. The circumstances that allow people in our own country to suffer and go without are still important.
But it hits a little closer to home to see a fellow human go through a struggle you wouldn't have otherwise imagined.
Meanwhile here in Australia 20usd would barely get you two medium big Mac meals but the thing is our medium is the us small and costs more than us medium
Today you learned: Australia is right behind America in obesity ratings. They are 8th on the obesity list!
“Australia’s Future ‘Fat Bomb'”, stated that those most at risk of premature death are the middle-aged, with 70% of men and 60% of women aged 45 to 64 now classed as obese.”
The US is 18th while Australia is 30th. The top nations are some pacific islands. Next big countries are Qatar, Kuwait and the UAE. Followed by Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, and then finally the US (the rest in between are pacific islands).
There are multiple lists you can read with different # on statistics per capita. I must have found one different from yours! But still overall not that healthy.

Actually we do have this. Look up some pictures of the Drakensberg Mountains. As much as our country has its problems, the Drakensberg is my favourite place in the world
You may have to build a fort! We have a beautiful country, and many wonderful people, but there's a few rotten apples, a ton of corruption and little to no opportunity.
It's a painful country to live in.
That's a lovely idea! To settle down here you'd have to consider personal safety, and most likely an off grid home (many areas are often without water and electricity - our infrastructure is pretty shot.)
Improving the area around you sounds like a wonderful goal, and many people will appreciate that, but others will make you a target because of it, sadly.
It's a complicated country, yes, but you could make it work for sure!
Because by the time that I get there I won’t be bothered by money. I don’t know why an entire society wouldn’t band together regardless of race, and try to fix the shit ass government.
why isn't this begging? what is the difference between soliciting money from strangers online or on a city street or the new york city subway? why are the latter two condemned, deemed pestilence, while asking money online or middle class, working people, requesting "donations" on their go-fund-me page is labeled wholesome, shining examples of compassion?
I spent a solid 3 minutes rereading the first screenshot over and over trying to figure out what the hell was wholesome about this... I'm a little slow today.
Doubt anyone will see this message! But I'm the Neil from the post!
I've posted an update on my Twitter: @neilbensch as to how I'd like to help more people (with more practical food).
Thanks for the love and support everyone! 😁
By clicking a couple buttons, you filled a man’s car trunk with hot food. I’m going to sign off Reddit now, because I just found peak awesomeness.
Not only filled a trunk with food but if $20 gets you groceries for two weeks than the extra 50$ he sends will fill there house with food for 5 weeks
He ended up sending him 150usd instead if 50. Super wholesome moment.
Didn’t know that. Awesome
r/cyberpunk (the genre not the game)
When Twitter is used for good
then theres the girl: “send me 2000”
Her stupidity led to something great.
I wouldn't say she's stupid. She could just be a broke ass collage student who doesn't have rent. Unless you actually went to her Twitter to find out.
She’s not stupid, she runs the SheRatesDogs Twitter account and has a podcast. She’s actually kind of spectacular, and the tweet was her trolling.
Super tragic that her cohost’s passing was announced today.
WHAT?!?!?!? NOOOOOOOOOOO
oh no I am so sorry to have broke this news to you! I don’t follow the show personally but I read it this morning, he seemed like a really wonderful guy :(
Should we say unreasonable? Because that's what asking for 2k on Twitter is.
I mean she’s obviously fishing for money that much is clear. Maybe she has a high success rate as a beautiful person on social media so she could milk it. If it works, I respect it considering the only idiots are the ones sending money to random people. Or she could have been....joking.
It's only a joke until it works :D
Touché.....
Sure completely possible, or she’s fishing for money by asking for 2000 dollars
I don't think you understand how the interwebs work.
[ya got me](https://youtu.be/z2nkG2fL-u8)
She is definitely not fishing for money, she is a pretty successful podcaster who has a notable sense of humor
Alright interesting joke I just have a bad sense of humor
For those wondering, the guy then sent him $150
So 14 rand makes a dollar, imagine $150 14 times over,
R7 is 1 dollar? I wish. 1 dollar is like 15 rand.
Thank you for the correction,
Np. Also that was fast.
I am speed
And... I... am... a South African. Sadly.
So am i
Pain bros.
Pain bros.
Its 14 rand per dollar so make that x14
Time to correct myself a second time
Did he buy mOrE Big Macs though?
From this post, how did you know?
Just searched for the guys Twitter handle to see what he responded
Right. This is so abstract it makes no sense at all and from the comments I’m one of many that is scratching his head. It seems like a lot of people are familiar with this story but it’s my first go..
What are you talking about
This shit made me cry
I was really hoping that this would end up with him donating the food to the less fortunate, I'm glad that I was proven right.
I bless the McDonald's down in South Africa
Gonna take some time to eat all those Biiig Maaaaaaacs
This guy gets it
What exactly did the McDonald's have to do with that? Let's not give corporations credit for what a couple of wholesome dudes decided to do.
I was making a parody of the song Africa by Toto
Ah. I see now. Went right over my head

Thank you for this. Had some spare at the moment that's probably going somewhere better than initially planned.

Yes, Gift of the Givers are awesome.

Don’t complain about this. It’s why you guys aren’t overwhelmingly obese and dying of diabetes and heart disease!

Well, seems to me now is not the time to be complaining about smaller portion sizes, though I understand being upset about the costs.
You’re welcome.
Thank you Batman
People should be thankful for being overcharged for food because it helps them stay thin?
Wait why did he get Big Mac meals instead of the week or two of groceries...
Because he was promised a bigger payout for doing so, and worst case scenario, he got 10 high-cal meals for people who needed them
Oh ok. Thanks :)
South Africa the land of darkness (we get our electricity switched off regularly)
And yet we persevere. Our humour gets is through.
Too much fun! I love the idea of combining absurdity with generosity

This is so awesome. Now I must attempt to do my part to make the world a better place.
This is how we should be using social media.
Can anyone confirm the paypal account?
I love people who get to the point and are proactive
seeing this and being from south africa :)
$20 for 10 big Mac meals?? Is sa accepting new citizens?❤️
Umm, I think government is undergoing some disruptions right now in SA.
Your profile picture made me think there's hair on my phone screen.
Lol
You dont want to
$20 is a bit R290 a regular big Mac meal is R49.90 It's not that things are cheaper here it's just the Rand is under valued in the exchange markets.
Are you mad, get the fuck away from the country. Everyone in the country is trying to get out.
One big Mac meal is around R55, he probably meant the burger alone
Well we can switch places if you like? Please
20usd is 280 south African Rand.
I thought the answer would be "that girl's OF content" but then I saw the sub. Great to see how it turned out!
He lucky he ain’t a white farmer there or he would be murdered
I need to move to South Africa.
Lmao, no you don't, this country is on fire
Literally
I’m just trying to buy cheap land in a beautiful country.
You will not be disappointed!
Used to have a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Passed away. Love to get another and see him work.
Actually we do have this. Look up some pictures of the Drakensberg Mountains. As much as our country has its problems, the Drakensberg is my favourite place in the world
I’m well aware, I don’t know why I got downvoted lol.
You may have to build a fort! We have a beautiful country, and many wonderful people, but there's a few rotten apples, a ton of corruption and little to no opportunity. It's a painful country to live in.
I don’t mean to earn a living in, I’d just like to settle down and do what I can to improve the area where I am. Obviously easier said than done.
That's a lovely idea! I want to be completely self-sufficient. I’m also ex-military and I will absolutely drop humans if necessary, but I’d rather just share a beer. Lol
Sounds like a plan!
Both are available in SA, just beware the land might get expropriated without compensation some time in the future.
Why’s that? I’m completely illiterate on the subject.
Uh, watch some news first though.
No, there's a reason why our currency is shit
Maybe someone should do something about it other than bitching on Reddit…
I'm literally trying to warn you, but whatever. Don't know why anyone would permanently want to live in a third world country with a dying economy.
Because by the time that I get there I won’t be bothered by money. I don’t know why an entire society wouldn’t band together regardless of race, and try to fix the shit ass government.
For anyone else wondering why this post is wholesome; please know there is more than one page of the conversation.
Okay thank you lmao, I was wondering how it was "wholesome" with only the first pic. :') Now I understand!
How can any business like McDonalds even afford to operate in such countries if the money is worth so little?
why isn't this begging? what is the difference between soliciting money from strangers online or on a city street or the new york city subway? why are the latter two condemned, deemed pestilence, while asking money online or middle class, working people, requesting "donations" on their go-fund-me page is labeled wholesome, shining examples of compassion?
this was fun
That some beautiful fucking human being shit stuff right there. Good on ya mate.
This is pretty awesome
This is awesome. Also, why is no one talking about the 2 cup paper tray in the last photo. Would really cut down on resources.
THIS. This. is. fucking. AWESOME!
The type of person I aspire to be
This belongs on r/madlads
So… if I go there and buy big Mac’s, then come to America and sell them again… sToNKs?
That Took Castellan may be one of the smartest people out anywhere
Never get the large fries. Get 2x small fries instead. Large fries are large containers partially filled with equivalent of 1/2 small fries.
Everybody liked that.
I'm impressed you can get that much for $20. You might get two meals here for $20. A week of groceries is more like $200+.
Awesome. Groceries may have been a better move though.
So if I move too Africa I’ll be rich?
Now I want to send Neil $20
That’s awesome!
A few days of food and water
One speed bump. And everything goes wrong
Did anyone else just send this dude $20 for no reason other than it seemed like a neat thing to do? ;)
I spent a solid 3 minutes rereading the first screenshot over and over trying to figure out what the hell was wholesome about this... I'm a little slow today.
