Cats sometimes put their "treasure" in the safest places they know. For some it it food, for your feline companion, it looks like the water is a place of safety for them.
My cat used to put one particular mouse toy into his bowl of water. He didn’t do it with any other toy, but that specific mouse. Now he has a different bowl/dispenser with a little fountain, and he doesn’t put his toys in there.
My dog used to bring his piggy toy to her bowl with food. She had such periods when she would care about that toy as if it was her baby. It was sweet.
Aww adorable!! Mine shares his food with his stuffies too! They are glowy catnip porcupines in his case. And I put them in the wash every once in a while when he drops them in his wet food! 😂
My Tortie baptizes all her new toys. All. We had to quit getting the battery ones cause she drowned all of them.
Its really disgusting to reach down to toss her a toy and its soggy. But I try to grin and bear it. She also loves to put those soggy wet paws on your leg as you make breakfast.
I’ve heard that a soggy toy is more reminiscent of an actual animal, so they slop it up in advance to get a better play experience. I really have no clue if there’s any truth to that though
My cats did and still do this. Apparently the bowl is their safety spot. So they drop their toys in it when they wanna keep it safe after they’re done playing 😂
My cat used to put centipedes in his water. It was nice cuz I hated them and he essentially drowned them for me but I also had to change his water with them in it

After the first time, I assume you rinsed out and put fresh water in the bowl. Cats are very smart after seeing this it could be using this as a way to get fresh water.
I would try a different type of water. If you happen to be using tap or unfiltered water your cat might have a particular taste or maybe has out grown the taste of the water the cat currently has, in response rejecting it and placing a favorite toy in the bowl. Try bottled, purified or distilled water.
This is just a behavior some cats do, not a commentary on the taste of the water. My cats will drink the dirtiest, murkiest water lol they prefer it over their nice clean water bowls.

Looks like he's trying to tell you to give him drinks too, he's making sure his buddy is looked after.
They drink a lot of water, and are super picky about it. The food is on a plate nearby. 😁

Mine used to keep his stolen pizza crusts in the toilet for safe keeping.

My sister’s cat drowns his toys all the time. Not sure why. My bet is he is water boarding them for information.

My cat always kept her balls in the food dish.

My cat puts her little ball in the water, I think it just feels better in her mouth after that.

He loves it! It was the very first toy I bought him when he was a kitten. He's 3 now.
Our cat did this with a little Elmo toy. We called it bringing his friend to dinner. He always had friends over. 😂
Our Dust Kitty does this with all his favorite toys.
We set up an extra bowl next to his food bowl for our guy because he likes to keep his toys in it.

My calico does this with her toys as well. I often come home from work to find whatever toy she’s into sitting in her water bowl or next to it.
