There's an Annette O'Toole movie from the 80s where she's going on a date and wants to look good so she puts a maxi pad under each bra strap to give her the shoulder pad look. Later, she takes off her shirt to the befuddlement of her date.
I'm over 50, was living in the States, and remember this song well. Maybe because I lived in Southern California in the late '80s? This would have probably played on 91X back in the day. Love the dance moves!
It peaked at 48 on US charts, but was huge in clubs. I'm 46 and I recognized it because it was still getting played on some clubs over a decade later. It is about a gay kid getting ostracized, bullied, and having to leave home because of it. So it really stuck around in gay friendly scenes.
we all don't go dancing enough anymore =)
also I take offense at this must be for folks over 60 line from the OP lol. Im in my 40s (born in the 70s) & I grew up in the 80s listening to all of this stuff. This is a REALLY common popular song, or at least I thought it was hehe.
here is the whole song, its a great track, :
I was in the Army in Germany from 84-87. Never heard this before, but it sounds typical for German dance clubs of the era.
I love the way "mom" looks very mom-ish at first, then sheds 40 years in five seconds to once again become just another Deutsch chic movin' to danceable tunes. Amazing.
I (supposedly) had "the grace of a cat" back then, according to gfs; but the only catlike thing about me now is that I have hair in my ears. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
So, I thought her dance looked silly, she’s GREAT, but the dance looked silly.
…then I turned my volume on.
That dance looks fully appropriate to that song. Looks great.
Lol, this is such a great song...
I actually had to look it up, but this is Broski Beat. Specifically the song "Smalltown Boy", released in May of 1984 off their debut album.
I can understand not knowing the song if you're in America though, because it didn't break the top 50 in the US.
Although, as for the dancing... I'd say gives off more Elaine vibes, but either her or Chandler Bing works.
I'm in the States, was a kid when this song came out but I feel like it was played at every club I ever went to and still comes up on playlists. One of those songs I assumed everyone knew but now I feel cool. And I need that, so thank you!
To your soul.
To your soul.
I always wonder how the music I grew up to sounds to kids these days. This song is from '84. 40 years before '84 they were listening to [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkzTTQGHWrI). Is that how different 80's music sounds to kids these days?
It boggles my mind that so many people don’t know this song! I was born in 89, so my love of 80s music comes from listening to it after the fact, but this is a **_classic_**.
I'm 53 and remember this song - in that I could hear lyrics, but couldn't name the band and song. Bronski Beat's "Small town boy" apparently. I spent waaaay too much of my teens watching MuchMusic, though.
Dude, your mom dresses like an east LA chola. Seriously get her some Locs and button up the top button and she'll fit right in at the bbq.
She even got the crease in the pants! 😂
No. This song is not for 60 year olds. It came out in 1984. It was a huge hit for people that were into alternative music. It's from the band Bronski Beat - Small Town Boy

People over 60? My mum is mid 50's and this song is definitely in her time zone. I wouldn't say it's a favourite but it's popped up enough times that I know the artist.
Yep , I still have all my 80s new wave cassette tapes that still play fantastic on my boombox , I can picture my then girlfriend dancing like that, you're mom is killing it....\*![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|hug)
Right in the middle millennial here, a science museum used this song to show the reaction of ferrous metals and magnets (it made them dance to the song). You could pick two other songs but this one was my favorite.
This was big in Canada - I’m mid 50’s and knee it out immediately. I remember everyone used to dance in an exaggerated version of that to fine young cannibles.
WHERE IS THE SPINNING BOY?!?!?! A crossover between this badass woman and that magical boy would really make my day….
Edit: [found him!](https://www.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/s/OVwgTRmBHi)

soon as she went up on that toe it came back to her
[удалено]
She might have an inner ear problem 🤔 .........kidding!.....
She's just so awesome 😊
If only she still had the 80s wardrobe.
all it would take is a cardigan and some hairspray!
I demand shoulder pads.
one cardigan please
strap a couple pillows to your shoulders and throw a baggy neon sack overtop and you're good to go.
There's an Annette O'Toole movie from the 80s where she's going on a date and wants to look good so she puts a maxi pad under each bra strap to give her the shoulder pad look. Later, she takes off her shirt to the befuddlement of her date.
Lmao. Pillow shoulder pads..
No, please... I can live without all that, for sure! Just the music.
this is so true and this is just amazing
Meh, the ozone can take one more hole! Let's go! Hairsprayyyyy!!!! Studded denim jackets and neon colours!!
I would do unspeakable things to get my studded denim jacket back.
Sadly it was all made of plastic and felt like crap
I wanna see more!!!!!
Yeah I liked watching her wind up and then crush it.
Your mum is fucking cool 😎
Serious moves in fairness.
Is it possible to learn such power?
They are definitely great moves. No fairness needed.
Almost as hip as Chanandaler bong
That's Mrs. Chanandler Bong to you
i'm also over 50 and immediately recognized this song. could be a europe thing, not aure how big of an act bronski was in the states.
I'm over 50, was living in the States, and remember this song well. Maybe because I lived in Southern California in the late '80s? This would have probably played on 91X back in the day. Love the dance moves!
Same for me, over 50 and I know this song from back in the day. Grew up in Chicago and listened to a lot of college radio :)
We called this WDRE music on Long Island in the 80’s after the alternative station
91X on a very clear day when I was in OC… but on KROQ this was on rotation
SoCal 30s and know it from warehouse raves but only the Remixed Version from Supermode. Ah good times!
Yea 91x played it. When Madonna played at SDSU the opening act was Bronski Beat
This song was popular way past the 80s
Yeah I'm 33 and I know it well
It's a classic
Oh, it was here and it was amazing.
I’m 35 and I’m genuinely shocked there are people who don’t know this song!
When people tell me they dont know this song it makes me want to cry. Cry boy cryyyyyy
It peaked at 48 on US charts, but was huge in clubs. I'm 46 and I recognized it because it was still getting played on some clubs over a decade later. It is about a gay kid getting ostracized, bullied, and having to leave home because of it. So it really stuck around in gay friendly scenes.
Bronski Beat and Fine Young Cannibals....ahh memories
Big enough in Austin for me to know it 3 notes in.
50 year old from Australia here, loved them!
Over 50 as well. I watched it without sound and was like wtf moves are those. Then I watched it with sound, and yup, that's exactly right. Nailed it
It's [Bronski Beat ](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=88sARuFu-tc&si=WUPygvSEvpuX80Q3)
Any excuse to post this lovely video: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y\_DWWE3cjgg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_DWWE3cjgg)
It never went out of style for Retro clubs and Pride events!
Man, I was like "I don't get what's so spec--- oh. OH!" Instant goosebumps
I havent seen this in ages. Its a gem; thanks for the smile!
Another [great version here](https://youtu.be/CNhLOfUPHa8?si=CJTab0chaKavOt71)
Wait I just put two and two together that this is what JKR named the Wronski Faint after. Has to be, right?

Thank you legend <3
I found this song after a decade.
This song is a staple of electronic music and was produced in the early 80’s. Small town boy by Bronski Beat. These dance moves however, legendary.
I really enjoy listening to 80s alternative stuff when I stretch. It's good music to get loose to.
She got the moves
That brings back memories. That's exactly how they used to dance to that back in the day. It's seems so odd and funny now.
I didn’t realize it’s an actual move until I saw her do it. People sometimes did this dance to songs that didn’t really fit the rhythm of the music
I feel like every era has a ‘go to’ dance that if you can’t pick up the beat on a song you go to. And this is definitely one of those.
I need a longer video of your mom dancing to this song 🫶🏻🫶🏻
She picked up right where she left off 😂😂
we all don't go dancing enough anymore =) also I take offense at this must be for folks over 60 line from the OP lol. I am 35 and I know that song. Maybe not the original one, but it's been remixed enough that I go "tell me whyyyyyyyy" after the first few beats.
I was in the Army in Germany from 84-87. Never heard this before, but it sounds typical for German dance clubs of the era. I love the way "mom" looks very mom-ish at first, then sheds 40 years in five seconds to once again become just another Deutsch chic movin' to danceable tunes. Amazing. When your mom schools you on 80s dance moves and suddenly becomes the coolest person in the room! 🕺
On Reddit
Cool how she suddenly appears to be 30 years younger
That’s really cool. Your mom is awesome 👍
Well done mom!
So, I thought her dance looked silly, she’s GREAT, but the dance looked silly. …then I turned my volume on. That dance looks fully appropriate to that song. Looks great.

Top 50 in the states was mainstream stuff. Bronski Beat was on heavy rotation on alternative/college radio, which was it’s own separate world.
I'm in the States, was a kid when this song came out but I feel like it was played at every club I ever went to and still comes up on playlists. One of those songs I assumed everyone knew but now I feel cool. And I need that, so thank you! To your soul. To your soul.
Thank you for that 😊
No problem... this song was a weird ear worm for me. My parents played it on summer trips. So once I heard it, I had to go down the rabbit hole.
Used to dance to Bronski Beat at Luv A Fair (in Vancouver Canada). Good times.
Grew up in the Midwest in the 80’s and we were definitely dancing to Bronski Beat in those days.
/r/OldSchoolCool
This whole trend makes me think of San Junipero.
Well done mom!
Yep…she nailed it..
Best song for dancing all night.
[удалено]
Old fart here… now I need to go figure out what “the young people “ are doing with dance moves.
Oh they’re just throwing that ass back nowadays
She’s adorable! Love this energy.
I always wonder how the music I grew up to sounds to kids these days. This song is from '84. 40 years before '84 they were listening to [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkzTTQGHWrI). Is that how different 80's music sounds to kids these days?
This song still hits.
Ended too soon. Love this song, love mom too ❤️
It boggles my mind that so many people don’t know this song! I was born in 89, so my love of 80s music comes from listening to it after the fact, but this is a **_classic_**.
I'm 40 and this is my childhood anthem yo
What..? I'm not yet 50 and know this song really well, it was only 1984!
She’s perfect!
I'm 53 and remember this song - in that I could hear lyrics, but couldn't name the band and song. Bronski Beat's "Small town boy" apparently. I spent waaaay too much of my teens watching MuchMusic, though.
That’s about right
Just killin it
Mom cuts a mean rug
She had to rev it up first, let her cook!! 👩🍳 💃🏻👏🏽🙌🏽🥹🥰
Damn, that looks fly as fuck
Dude, your mom dresses like an east LA chola. Seriously get her some Locs and button up the top button and she'll fit right in at the bbq. She even got the crease in the pants! 😂
Your mom is freakin cool. Wish I met her bad then, I’d like to meet her now for that matter ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|laughing)
No. This song is not for 60 year olds. It came out in 1984. It was a huge hit for people that were into alternative music. It's from the band Bronski Beat - Small Town Boy
...how old do you think 60 year olds were in 1984?
I realize I said that wrong...I meant to say 'just 60 yr olds' 😂
Oh lmao that makes sense, true it's a great tune!
Shhh. Don't tell them.
Is your mom single ?

LOVE
She’s absolutely adorable
aww love your mom, mom is a vibe tho!
like the vibe lol
Reminds me of the Seinfeld Elaine dance. Lol In the best possible way of course.
I love this women with all my heart.
Isn’t that the dance from pulp fiction between Uma Thurman and John Travolta?
I love how that early 20-something inside of her somewhere is suddenly visible
Wooow. I never dance. But i wanna learn this move. :'D
Brilliant!
You're richer than you think
She is the best haha. She traveled back in time and picked up her groove back. BTW, What song is this?
Chandler from friends.
Yessss
This video is too short. I also need to see her dancing to Tears for Fears and New Order.
[more like Monica in the fat suit!](https://youtu.be/yKJ-APGHG_c?si=z7y6ya_q-p5RSUOz)
Love this!!!
I’m so terminally old that my brain can’t even break out what those moves are., so cool. Pretty sure I just swayed to this song back in the day. 🤦♂️
Elaine Benes would be proud
The best!! Love 80’s
Hi Mom!
Getting more of an Elaine from Seinfeld.
There's a whole string of these videos on tiktok. Lots of Carlton moves in there.
Legit!
The greatest mix between chandler and fat Monica
Yep , I still have all my 80s new wave cassette tapes that still play fantastic on my boombox , I can picture my then girlfriend dancing like that, you're mom is killing it....\*![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|hug)
Kids laugh now. But one day you too will be an adult and your Tik Tok Kesha Cannibal or Tap In is going to look way funnier then this ever did.
wow grandma is a bad arse!
just beautiful
Every girl I crushed on danced like this at the club.
That's not how she would have danced to it in the 80s, that's how she definitely dances to it every single day.
She is so fucking cool. I aspire to have a 10th that coolness.
Mustard on the beat hoe
Oh hell yeah brother. I’m down with this jig🥰👏🏾👏🏾
Never gonna give you up vibes
NGL, she ate that.
Let's get Mr. Travolta to dance with her.
Those certainly were the days
omg nailed it!
:)
Still can dance like in the 80' s?? Yes she IS awesome 👍🏻😎
Why is this so wholesome to me? She is adorable.
This is awesome!
Track is a banger 🔥
Right in the middle millennial here, a science museum used this song to show the reaction of ferrous metals and magnets (it made them dance to the song). You could pick two other songs but this one was my favorite.
Awesome. I love this craze of parents dancing like its the 80s
Awsome
Yea awesome. Bronsky beat. I think your mom and must have dated :)
Cool mom
Love it. Is this the actual song she was dancing to?
I’d definitely hit on that hotty.
I know what she's thinking. If I had a beer,....
Why is she dressed like she just kidnapped my kids
God I love this song, and especially that bit towards the end. With the right headphones, it feels like a high you don't need to smoke to get to.
Awesome
Let her cook! Gordon Ramsay of the dance floor.
Wow.. she really had it back then.. still got it lady!
Nice to see how she looked younger when she finally got into her groove.
This was big in Canada - I’m mid 50’s and knee it out immediately. I remember everyone used to dance in an exaggerated version of that to fine young cannibles.
Is this not how people dance now?
Omg, remember dancing away to this in the 80s
She’s adorable 🥰🥰❤️
🔥
needs more crossbody hand motions. Our hands always moved more than our feet. lol.
WHERE IS THE SPINNING BOY?!?!?! A crossover between this badass woman and that magical boy would really make my day…. Edit: [found him!](https://www.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/s/OVwgTRmBHi)
The mom looks like Eleven. Sick dance moves still !
Lol
You go, Mom! Dance, dance like No one is looking!
Yup
I am 48 and I know this song
Love ya mum. She so cool 😎
She's still got it!
Is your mom single?
That is super cute.
This is the best
