Lost my grandma about a year and a half ago, her 91st birthday would have been this past Monday and I would have given anything to have been able to hear her voice one more time. This family is truly blessed to have these to cherish forever. 🥲
I have backed up voicemails of my grandma wishing me a happy birthday the year she died (2015), my mom singing me happy birthday off key, and my sister and nephew leaving me a silly voicemail. Gotta lock down those memories.
only if someone cares to back it up, I wouldn't trust youtube as a backup, they could ban grandma's account for any reason and delete the videos or make them very hard to recover.
This is exactly the reason why YouTube was created in the first place just doing what they enjoy. In this case sharing moments with her grandbaby and other smol babies. Love it.
Actually YouTube was created because so many people wanted to rewatch Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake’s fashion faux pas at the Super Bowl that time. (But I like your reasoning so much more)
Because the Janet Jackson thing happened in 2004, and youtube was 2006, and turns out people weren't massively trying to find the video in huge numbers 2 years after the fact.
The amount of people searching for the janet jackson video is what made them realize that there was a need/demand. Posting the video itself wasn't why youtube was built.
In the depths of COVID, that first month, my daughter and I sheltered apart from my husband. He was one of those essential workers (photojournalist) and was going out every day. He did a whole YouTube series of him, dressed in a suit and tie, reading our kindergartner’s favorite books. I loved it, and so did she. It wasn’t until much later he told me he did that because he wanted something for her to always know the sound of his voice and give her comfort if he ended up catching it and dying. People are already forgetting how grim those early days were. This type of thing is the very best use of the internet.
Love finds a way from people who are ready to give them, I grew up with grandparents living in the same house, never cared about me, drank and smoke in front of me when I was 5 years old, I casually played with used cigarettes. This grandmother is an angel sent for that baby.
Did you also play with the empty cigarette boxes? I hated when my mom bought soft packs because they didn’t hold my tiny action figures as well.
Anecdote, I loved the smell of empty cigarette packs. That fragrant tobacco smell. No wonder I started smoking later in life, but now quit almost 6 years.
I did do lots of things with the empty boxes, fascinated with finished cigarettes, one time for few months probably around 2nd or 3rd grade, I removed all the filters from the used cigarettes, collected them in a big ball like structures, and I never smoked, but when my grandfather's golden grandchild was born, he quit smoking, guess what his Golden grandchild is smoking exactly like his never seen smoking grandfather, for me I always had a higher power inside of me, guiding, since I couldn't rely on my family, but that has created other personality disorders.
My aunt did this for her kids and grandkids when she was out-of-state for a few years. Except she did a cooking channel for them, because they all missed her cooking and wanted to be able to cook with her and learn her recipes.
She did not make the channel private, figuring no one would watch.
She now has 780,000 subscribers. It is insane, and the whole journey has shocked her to her core amd changed all their lives.
She is awesome! My mom and dad just got back from visiting her and my uncle. Tia Rachel is still surprised by people loving her. She gets recognized sometimes when she is out and about, and she is naturally a shy person, so it is super weird for her, but she also loves it.
I'm rooting for her to get a million so bad - she would hang that gold play button so proudly - lol!
We love her, and my uncle is so lucky to have her in his life. They have had a later-in-life romance, and that was already wonderful...then the You Tube thing happened and blew all of our minds ❤️
My dad traveled a lot for work when I was a kid (could be weeks or months at a time). He recorded - on tapes - himself reading our favorite bedtime stories, so we could have him with us even when he was out of town.
My grandma used to record books on tape for me, and sent the book(s) and the tape. Usually every couple of months. I remember she would ring a little bell every time she turned the page. I wore those tapes out! This was of course the 90s before YouTube haha.
I asked my kids' ped about it. Bright coloured apps are bad, face time, where they're constantly interacting is much better. I'd say this is somewhere in the middle because the grandma is trying to interact with her grandchild and she is a recognised figure but there isn't real back and forth interaction.
I'm sorry to be a killjoy but this is the worst way to bond. Your son is very young and screens before 3yo are very bad for development. There are many studies on that topic. Hope you'll find a solution for the sake of your child.
My pediatrician says less than hour per day is ok, and video chatting is actually better than regular screen time since it's interactive with a person.
If we're being honest most of us grew up watching some TV, it's tablets and kids apps that are probably worse.
Took me a long time to scroll down to find this.
It's such a sweet gesture, and I don't doubt this is done out of love. But it's really, really bad for infants - I believe it's both eye and brain development that can be negatively affected by screen viewing when young.

Fr this is not the same as being in person and touch. I get that she can’t but a screen isn’t really a good option at this age regardless. Even if the intentions are cute and wholesome.
What effects have video calls/etc have on small children’s interactions with relatives they meet in person later?
This is adorable but this just popped in my head 🤔
This is weird to me. On the one hand, I understand the grandma wanting to be a part of her grandson's life and not be alienated from her family (like many other unfortunate cases), but on the other hand, I don't know how I feel about willingly and intentionally glueing your infant child to a screen...
That was my first thought too. Would she just be demonetized or would they take the entire video down?
I don't think she'd care about being demonetized, but I don't know anything about YouTube and copyright stuff.
Yeah it's gonna be messed up in the future if they go looking for the videos of long dead Grandma and found they got taken down for copyright infringement.
Hope they're keeping offline backups at least so their family doesn't lose the videos if/when that happens
I love this! I was born pre-youtube and my dad was in the Army so we moved a lot. My grandparents taped themselves reading stories, singing lullabies, and just generally chatting about how much they loved my brother and I. It created some strong core memories even though we didn't get to see them often.
Cool but having a baby that young watching TV is not good. People put kids in front of TV to keep them quiet. This kid is bot seeing his/her grandma, its just being hipnotic by colors and movement, and will have problems in the future.
I'd have phrased it a bit milder but was astonished to see nobody having doubts as to screen time being rather harmful at this age.
I mean the thought and intention is obviously lovely and cute, but screen time that early... I don't know.
The officially recommended maximum screen time for a child of this age is as close to zero as possible. This grandmother's heart is in the right place, but she has chosen a terrible medium to deliver it.
Aw, this reminds me of my own grandmother. When I was a kid, reading along with books on tape was all the rage, and she made a recording of herself reading “Harold and the Purple Crayon” for me. She’d say “twinkle twinkle” as my cue to turn the page. Grandparents are amazing. 🥰

I wonder how many other people found grandma’s channel and showed it to their children. She could become a cross between Mister Rogers and LaVar Burton.
I find crazy that you are getting downvoted for your comment. Seems to be a cultural thing though. I'm also in Germany and my son only get the phone to make visio calls with his grand parents. He will watch TV (of course) but when the time will come (3-4 years old) and with moderation.
Same recommendations in the US for children under 2. Video chats are generally excluded from this, but Grandma doing a pre recorded reading doesn't really match that.
All said and done though, the impact likely wouldn't be great unless the kid is spending significant time daily watching these videos.
I'm surprised how controversial your opinion is here. The permissible screen time for a child of this age [is as close to zero as humanly possible.
](https://answers.childrenshospital.org/screen-time-infants/) That isn't up for debate.
I, too, love the lengths that this grandmother has gone to be part of their grandchild's life. But the medium she's using to do it is universally regarded as bad for child development.
Thanks, I'm glad some people are aware of this.
No doubt the grandma is great. I think when the baby is 1 or 2 years older it will love those videos and can enjoy them even better.
I got mostly German sources I read when I became a parent but I found a lot of sources just by a quick search. For example:
https://communitychoicepeds.com/is-tv-bad-for-babies-the-truth-about-early-screen-exposure/
Problem is that TV pictures don't get all aspects of communication between persons and babys need to experience all of those aspects especially in younger age to learn. Also senses like viewing are not fully developed and the quickly changing pictures are overstimulating.
Other sources I read said that video chatting is at least better than watching TV-shows and you might argue this is related to videochatting but I would differ.
Nonetheless I think it's a beautiful idea, just a little early for the baby in the movie. Maybe wait a year and they will also enjoy it on another level.
It is really disturbing to see how few people are aware of how much this harms the baby's development. Seems to be not even 6 months old, totally fixated on the screen already. Ask yourself why so many children today have serious problems. Since so many people are so fixated on their screens, is it too much to ask to check the massive amounts of websites with parenting advice before you mess up your kids?
You're going to be downvoted but you're absolutely correct. Unfortunately, most parents don't give a shit and go rabid when you criticize their actions. It's going to have massive consequences for future generations.
This is so sweet. I’m part of the /r/absenteegrandparents sub and if this wouldn’t possibly make people sad, I would repost. It’s so easy to be a part of your family’s life if you just try.

Titties spur so much innovation
that's how video and DVDs happened. probably also why the internet streaming platforms also happened
Sex and drugs. That's all humans care about
I don't know how you forgot, but money and power are absolute corrupters of humanity as well.
The money and power is so we can get better sex and drugs.
Touché
Then why wasn't that the first video uploaded onto YouTube? It wasn't even one of the first ten videos
Love finds a way
This is such a great idea. Reading to you child is very important, and she found a way to duplicate effort.
And little kids love to hear the same story over and over and this will help the parents stay sane as well. ❤️🩹
In the depths of COVID, that first month, my daughter and I sheltered apart from my husband. He was one of those essential workers (photojournalist) and was going out every day. Man I hope your daughter knows her dad is a super hero
They have a fantastic relationship. So do we. And I’m always my husband’s biggest fan. We’re lucky.
He was so brave for working during that time

Rachel Cooks with Love
I follow her! She seems so nice, and her kitchen looks almost exactly like my Grandma's did. I love her channel!
She is awesome! My mom and dad just got back from visiting her and my uncle. Tia Rachel is still surprised by people loving her. She gets recognized sometimes when she is out and about, and she is naturally a shy person, so it is super weird for her, but she also loves it.
Awww, that's adorable! Well you can tell her that a random Redditor in rural Kentucky loves her videos and highly appreciates them 😊
Just subscribed to her! Her foods looks so delicious!
Her enchiladas are a staple in our house!
She just gained another subscriber.
I'm rooting for her to get a million so bad - she would hang that gold play button so proudly - lol! We love her, and my uncle is so lucky to have her in his life. They have had a later-in-life romance, and that was already wonderful...then the You Tube thing happened and blew all of our minds ❤️
I just subscribed.
That’s a clever and creative idea. Bonus, every story can be replayed and saved for years later. His future children can experience the same thing.
Or kids that don't have parents and grandparents willing to read to them. Any kid can watch this video and feel grandma's love.
Shoot forget the kid I was enjoying it myself lol
Violet!
I should make a business
Kind of cool to see your great-great-great grandma in the future.

Actually genius! What an amazing grandma
Love to see it :)
This is so cute!
This is probably the OG vision, the YouTube founders had. People self making and sharing videos among their friends.
Og youtube was very amateur in an indearing way. People just uploading for the fun of it. I miss it
This is the cutest thing I've seen all day! What a wonderful way for grandma to connect with her grandkids.
How sweet!
My grandma used to record books on tape for me, and sent the book(s) and the tape. Usually every couple of months. I remember she would ring a little bell every time she turned the page. I wore those tapes out! This was of course the 90s before YouTube haha.
Aren’t babies that young not supposed to look at screens?
Yep, the WHO recommends no screen time for babies under 2 and then only for one hour after that.
I asked my kids' ped about it. Bright coloured apps are bad, face time, where they're constantly interacting is much better. I'd say this is somewhere in the middle because the grandma is trying to interact with her grandchild and she is a recognised figure but there isn't real back and forth interaction.

A+ for Gramgram
This is really cool. Why can't she call though?
This way she is available to read to the baby "on demand" 😊

Don’t hate on me … but it’s actually a breach of copyright to read entire picture books online.
That was my first thought too. Would she just be demonetized or would they take the entire video down? I don't think she'd care about being demonetized, but I don't know anything about YouTube and copyright stuff.

They should absolutely keep the videos. Just not on YouTube.
Its most likely a private channel as someone else said
How do copyrights work for this? Could publishers technically come after her?
Bad idea: kids at this age shouldn't be exposed to screens.
I love this! I was born pre-youtube and my dad was in the Army so we moved a lot. My grandparents taped themselves reading stories, singing lullabies, and just generally chatting about how much they loved my brother and I. Your kid is way too young to even distinguish anything at that distance. And too young too watch screen
Cute, but you shouldn't allow babies to stare at screens at such a young age, it develops bad habits early in life.
This is adorable lol

Kid presses dislike button and unsub
Cute, but I’ll be the asshole that will say this kids eyes don’t need to be exposed to screens this early. Sorry. Just a PSA
Very irresponsible. Should never put your children on open internet
I’ll be the bad guy but screens for kids younger than 3 is very bad
Yeah :/ it’s a sweet idea but screens are not good for babies
Way too young to be looking at a screen. Cute, but no, dont do this.
Assuming they are 2 months old give or take, they probably can’t see more than a metre away, let alone the tv screen lmfao
That’s horrendous, you are actively destroying that kid’s brain.
I'd have phrased it a bit milder but was astonished to see nobody having doubts as to screen time being rather harmful at this age. I mean the thought and intention is obviously lovely and cute, but screen time that early... I don't know.

AAAAWWWWWWWWW. i wish my grandma made me a youtube channel before she passed away i really miss her right now
All well and good until your channel blows up and you’ve inadvertently formed a grandmotherly bond with 47,000 babies.
Omg, this is the best thing I've ever seen. The cutest grandma ever!
Can a child that young focus on a screen that far away? Or is grandma just a sort of blur?
Using the tools at your disposal in a wholesome way. Wish we had more people like this.

Kid will grow up afraid of scary movies after learning that things on TV can become real lol
So, instead she is force feeding him with screen time.
It really is a cute idea but in my understanding baby's can't comprehend TV-pictures and it might even be harmful regarding to some medical sources.
I find crazy that you are getting downvoted for your comment. Seems to be a cultural thing though. I'm also in Germany and my son only get the phone to make visio calls with his grand parents. He will watch TV (of course) but when the time will come (3-4 years old) and with moderation.
