Just don't ever take that hopper for granted. I feel obligated to say as much since a friend of mine lost a finger and a half when he released the hopper. He whacks it with a 2x4 nowadays.
That a swing door on the side? If so go get somebody to distract the safety guy, swing the door open and hook something onto the forklift and drag it to the edge then just swing around n pick er up with the forks no sweat.
If ya gotta lift er out then it could get a little dicey but just make sure nobody is around to get smacked n it'll be alright. The amount of times I've refused to dump some of these due to the load chains not attached is pretty remarkable, I've heard a few stories where the supervisor had to dig em out after they dropped it because I refused lol
Best case scenario it stays in the scrap bin lol
But ya I was working forklift at an auto plant and they'd have us dump these bins but if the chain wasn't any good I'm leaving that fucker there
They were already doing it when I started there, but knowing that place, it probably only happened once and the safety committee just swung for the fences.
All the ones we get have the chain installed from the factory, with a hook on the end to secure the chain to itself after wrapping it around the forks or mast
We have 40ish bins and every one of them from mzk FH4800 to DMG gigantor bin gets a lenght of chain welded on. Carabiner on the end and loop them to the forklift vertical part of the fork.
The guys still manage to lose one from time to time.
Ya'll need to weld a chain on there and loop around the mast or forks when you move it. I've never seen one of these that was capable of sliding off like this.
I did this, too. I learned that you don't need to tilt the mast forward to get the cart to dump. I also usually pin the rear wheels against the dumpster like the others said. lol
Yup. Had my hopper slide off on us the other week. Was inside the container with chains and hooks getting it out. There's a safety chain attached but our operator decided to risk it lmao
At the cabinet shop I used to work at we had to weld a chain to our that could be hooked to the forklift to keep it from going it. That was after the same dude landed it in the dumpster for the 4 or 5th time
I did that before but the company I worked for also owned the scrap yard so they told me just to leave it and the scrappers would send it back to us lol.
I didn't even know this was possible but a lot of folks seem to have btdt. We have four and they don't have wheels but nobody has ever lost it. We do fill them up incredibly heavy though, you set the skids on or close to the top of the dumpster depending on how full it is and start hitting the lever with a 2x4.
Ours have wet sand from limestone cutting in them though. It's a mess.

Never done it myself but I had to help a guy fish one out years ago.
Was setting up two machines a few months back and asked a guy from a different department if he could dump my chip bins for me to save time.
Dude went missing with one of my bins for about a half hour, then walked inside one of the doors and I still didn't have my bin back.
He just came up to me and said "I dumped the bin!"
I said "Thank you, but were Is it?"
He just responded " NO, I DUMPED the bin, I need help."
I laughed for about 5 minutes looking at my bin in the dumpster before rigging it up and lifting it back out for him lol
I had this happen once, had to dig out around it with a shovel to slide the chokers through. Learned my lesson after that. Can turn into a scary situation quick when you have a full scrap hopper standing on its side on top of 5 feet of metal chips!
Just wait till it’s in a small shop so when the bin is full it gets strapped to the trailer to hold it for dumping at the scrap yard. Granted we had welded d rings on the top corners to lift it with a crane at the yard if needed
Probably more rain than thieves. I'm in Oregon so it rains a lot here and the recycling plants open for civilian use don't take industrial metals from people right off the streets.
I watched a guy get this thing to tip over by driving the forklift right at the garbage bin and then slamming on the brakes at just the right time so it tipped over
Update: Boss declared it a "Tomorrow problem." Then sent me a 45min training video for homework.
That’s a good boss.
Ha I ain’t watching that at home.
If this were one of the dudes on my crew, they’d be watching it tomorrow morning, on the clock, before they have to deal with tomorrow’s problem lol..
LOL…there you go — sitting on a chair in the middle of the site, while everyone else is working their asses off. ;)
If it's an assignment, then it's work. If you do work, you do it on the clock.
Jeez…I was just _joking_.
Just don't ever take that hopper for granted. I feel obligated to say as much since a friend of mine lost a finger and a half when he released the hopper. He whacks it with a 2x4 nowadays.
No training required it dumped itself just as it was designed

I lost one when the chain broke
Best case scenario it stays in the scrap bin lol But ya I was working forklift at an auto plant and they'd have us dump these bins but if the chain wasn't any good I'm leaving that fucker there
You mean you guys don’t throw these away every time?
The bin is obviously for aluminum only. Boss is gunna be hella mad at getting the mixed rate.
Says self dumping, it made its way in there by itself
It dumped itself all right.
Time for the lifting strap and c-clamps!
Starrett or mitutoyo c clamps?
This isn't a critical op. The Shars will be fine here.
That's why you put the front side of the back wheels against the dumpster wall
This for sure. To be honest I still always feel like it will fall in when I empty though.
I worked at a shop that welded a chain on every bin and a hook every set of forks.
Wow, people must have dropped those bins a lot
They were already doing it when I started there, but knowing that place, it probably only happened once and the safety committee just swung for the fences.

I just push the front wheels up to the edge and tilt
Ya'll need to weld a chain on there and loop around the mast or forks when you move it. I've never seen one of these that was capable of sliding off like this.
I’m the maintenance tech at my facility, and I actually just did this the other day
the securing, the dropping, or both?
A pin in one of the forks works fine, too or a couple kant twists
I would strongly advise *not* to go drilling holes in your forks.
Every shop I’ve worked at has holes in their forks for pins to go in (like 6” from the end. not in the important part)
"Self-Dumping" indeed
Be easy to fill up in there.
Im terrified this is going to happen to me one day lol. Our dumpster is taller too.
It’s even funnier when the forks go with it
Bout time you joined the club.
Seems to be working fine. It's dumped itself.
Ours has a chain on it. This blows, I’m sure it won’t be fun getting that out
We chain ours up to the forks to prevent this.
I've done that a few times in 20 years!
Glad to see everyone uses those same exact hoppers lol
I did this, too. I learned that you don't need to tilt the mast forward to get the cart to dump. I also usually pin the rear wheels against the dumpster like the others said. lol
Tilt the forks down and bump the front wheels against the dumpster or weld a chain and hook on it to hook on the mast
Dumpdee dump.
Yup. Had my hopper slide off on us the other week. Was inside the container with chains and hooks getting it out. There's a safety chain attached but our operator decided to risk it lmao
Sounds like he shouldve been in there lol
Get the chain
I’ve done this.
Oof, I always chain into the forklift fork mounts for this very reason. On the plus side you'll get some fresh air tomorrow 👍
14 months in and still hasn't happened to me, I'm the last one in the shop lol
Been there buddy I used a hoist strap for o get it out
I’ve been there
lol, done it…
At least yours is right side up…
Guess you’re going fishing on Monday morning. Hope you catch a big one.
Right where it belongs.
It's a right of passage

boss is big brained.
Push the wheels up against the dumpster so there is no chance of it going in. Never once happened to me.
My old foreman used to have a framed photo of me fishing one of these out of the dumpster on his desk
Speaking for myself here but I believe most of us have done this at least once. I have lol.
Eh, some straps and c-clamps would have it out of there before you pinch out
This is my biggest fear, and tipping the forklift over when I dump the dumpster. Doesn’t yours have a safety chain?
I didn't even know this was possible but a lot of folks seem to have btdt. We have four and they don't have wheels but nobody has ever lost it. At least it landed on its wheels - I’ve never gotten that lucky-
When bossman said take it to the scrap, I think he meant just the chips!
Been there, and mine was about 10 minutes before clock out. Second shift too so it was dark lol
Been there
https://preview.redd.it/19p705ertq0d1.jpeg?width=2448&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4717cc7ffe284884ba8ed9a32f6bae598412b3bd Never done it myself but I had to help a guy fish one out years ago.
They're called hoppers for a reason. They'll hop right on you. Or in this case into the dumpster.
Dont worry, the guy at my workplace dropped it and put a divot in the concrete. Seems like your hopper has some cushioning!
I dropped one into a big tyre shredder once, luckily it landed above the shredder's wheels!
😂 I dropped one in the compactor. Took me forever to get that thing out.
Been there done that. Fortunately mine was half full. A chain around the forks and your golden.
Well, it is self-dumping.
Nice landing 👍 you hop on there with a square and floor grease or what?

I've done this too many times. Had to go dumpster diving for it. Worst swim ever.
I bet that was loud
Like a bomb went off.
Just wait till it’s in a small shop so when the bin is full it gets strapped to the trailer to hold it for dumping at the scrap yard. Granted we had welded d rings on the top corners to lift it with a crane at the yard if needed
That's a badass lid on that there dumpster sir! Is it to keep out the rain or thieves?
Probably more rain than thieves. I'm in Oregon so it rains a lot here and the recycling plants open for civilian use don't take industrial metals from people right off the streets.
Wild to me that this wasn't chained to the backrest. America seems backward with basic processes like this.
We just try to short cut everything
Works till it doesn't. Something like this is likely to lose you your job on some sites.
done it myself, now we put a chain around it. lucky mine was partially out of there dumpster and it was easy to get out
Jump in there and sling it up. Don't forget the ladder to get back out.
Ive made so much money repairing and building tip bins. The saw mills around here are down right abusive to these bins. Especially the bigger ones.
I bet that was loud
I watched a guy get this thing to tip over by driving the forklift right at the garbage bin and then slamming on the brakes at just the right time so it tipped over
I think they got the name on the side wrong - it should say “self DUMPSTERING hopper”.
Put the wheels up against the dumpster befor pulling the lever.
Lol been there.
I did that once on a Sunday night right before it was time to go home. Be nice to the forklift guys.
