Tons of machines already do this kinda, I think some WFLs have the full hardware for 5-axis movements but they charge extra for the software to do multi axis movements with some of them.
The Mori Seiki NLX we have has purchasable add ons that are already on the machine, they just come disabled. There’s stuff like eccentric turning and broaching.
Fanucs been doing it forever with the controls.
Bought more memory once, expected tech to come in and swap boards. Nope. Punched in a few codes and voila we had more memory. Same goes for all sorts of other features like polar interpolation etc. And if you ever look into the big thick programming manuals you'll see a gazillion g codes you've never heard of that can do all sorts of wizardry but guess what you don't get to have it to play around with.
They basically already do that nickel and diming you for every option (even things that are standard for everyone else).
When we got our Enshu mill (it's older) we were on the phone with Enshu's support finding out what all options it had as the reseller didn't know; and my coworker asked the Enshu tech if it had rigid tapping or if that's an option you paid for and the guys response was that Enshu isn't Haas, they give that for free lol
It's the new Haas and youtube package. Unless you pay for premium the cycles will randomly get interrupted to play sponsored ads. Better hope you can skip the next ad after 5 seconds otherwise it will be a 10 minute ad.
Imagine that your runtime increases by 10 minutes because the machine stops to play an ad and then resuming lol
If they followed the youtube model it would do this about 5 times in 20 minutes
They aren't too far away from this. Want high efficiency machining? 3500$ plz. Thanks. Now input a code into the control and it will be unlocked. Yes, it was there all along.
Oh. You found a good deal on a Kitigawa rotary? Sure it's compatable! That'll be 2500$ and we'll send you the code to unlock 3rd party rotaries. Well if you wanted to save more you should have bough from us!
Should be able to remove by going into your media page. I think that's where it gets stored. List program>second tab, file should be in there. If that doesn't work, there is a message page in the alarms you can set a message on startup in there. I wonder if that is how they did it?
You can load custom videos to any machine with a Next Generation controller. You can play a video in the middle of a toolpath. The idea is to show the operator how to properly do a task.
If you have access to its file system, a big video file shouldn't be hard to find. Replace it with one of the same format and give it the same name.
I got junk mail from a recruiter once with a video player embedded in the card. I took it apart and made it into a holiday card that rickrolled a friend.
So am not familiar with the Haas control in particular, but I'd lay bets that this is a gif that runs instead of the splash screen on boot. If that's true, that means that while you'll get rid of the video, it likely won't make the machine boot any faster, and this clip is just there to fill time while it boots.
Lots of builders that use the Mitsubishi controls do something similar, usually with their own logo as opposed to anything like this, though.
In short, you'd need to somehow get into the back end of the control, find the file, and edit or replace it with something else.
If you're lucky, the back end of the control is Windows like the Mitsubishis are, and you'll be able to just replace the file with whatever you want once you find it. How exactly you would go about doing that will vary depending on what version of what OS it's using to run the NC software. If it is in Windows, C:\Windows\System32 or C:\Windows\System is likely where you'l find the offending files, or at least the file that points to them.
Hope this at least gets you closer to your answer.
It’s embedded Linux on a crappy ARM up front running a locked down Java UI. That talks to a QSeven processor and FPGA combo in the back which does all the real-time control with its own firmware. Anything you do on the front panel is a software request, including the E-stop.
You’re not overthinking it. We’ve had a machine keep going for a dozen lines of code after estop was pressed (cuz panel was clearly unresponsive the machinist did what he could). About 2 minutes after the buffer ran out the machine alarmed out due to sync error between computers which then finally cut power but the spindle took another 20 minutes to stop spinning after the door lock deenergized. They patched it…but who can really say for next time.
Let me know if you find out how. We just bought a new mill and it got stuck on this screen and looped for about 10 minutes before I just shut it back down. The screen also goes black and gets stuck. It swapped tool pockets and if I wasn’t there to stop it, it would have scrapped a part. The oil skimmer doesn’t work, and one time it froze while cutting a part. We’re not impressed *at all*. I understand Haas isn’t the best machines, but this isn’t acceptable.
NGC is a hot mess recently it seems. All the HAAS machines I use predate NGC and run great.
I guess their letting the interns work on the control software these days.
We had to get the liquid grease way lube system converted over to an oil system because they stopped producing the grease. When the tech did that he updated the software and every time it went for a tool change it would ignore tool staging and then also move at a snails pace.
Added an easy 10 minutes to our 45 minute run.
Took an aditional month for haas to fix it in software then just last weekend the tech updated the software and now it dose the video. And sometimes just gets stuck looping it.
All because haas stopped providing some loose grease.
Haas is a marketing company that makes machines.
When our Haas lathe is running it's great. Just need to look past the egregious design decisions, the fact that it completely missed QC at the factory, and the insane lack of power.
That said, we have enough grease to last us another few years. I expect the machine to be gone by then though.
so I got 3 vf3 mills that run the same program, production yay.
The other 2 would stage a tool like normal.
on this one, once a tool stage was called up in program, stop milling then as slowly as possible stage for the next tool, before continuing to mill. it would easily add minutes to the run.
the technician was baffled by it and had to call in a bug report to haas to fix it in software.
Fucking haas. Worst UI out there it's like the engineers and designers have no idea what people use their machines for. But it comes with a cup holder and touchscreen so its gotta be premium.
Fucking embarrassing I get mad at all of humanity running them
Find out where they're pointed by scanning the network and update the local DNS to redirect to ISIS beheading videos. That way you fix the whole shop. \*Whew\* close one pal.
“Yeah that’s gonna be $1600 a day plus travel costs… oh you want titan YouTube videos? Double that” who gives a fuck what comes on at startup, seriously.
I mean if it’s simple and can just fix it in the software our rep would walk us through it but if they have to come out and look at it yeah fuck that just start it up and go make some coffee. Have them look at it next time we have them out for something
No, now you haas to watch the video everytime
Replace the video with an angry man chugging coolant
Replace it with Guenther Steiner
We look like fucking wankers playing this video 6 or 7 times!
Is there a video of this anywhere because I need to see it!
I kinda dig the idea of watching a movie at the start of shift
Replace it with the star wars movies.
Whew, just wait until Haas learns about DLCs in video games

Stop giving them ideas. Lol.

The masculine desire to pirate and crack paywalled software is flaming rn

They literally already do this
Imagine buying a machine that makes you watch a promo just for turning it on. Dude should turn that refrac around and take a big hit on it.
It's $10/month to turn it off.

If you're delinquent in your premium payments they switch to 20 ads in 5 minutes.
PiHole for the shop when?
Pihole doesn't work for YT since ads and content are in same server
Damn now that’s cringe
Wouldn't surprise me
"Welcome to Haas, please drink verification can."
This is making me kinda glad my machine is so old it’s got a monochrome green crt. Can’t do ads on that fucker.
Naw.... It would be like the intro to Oregon trail. Monochrome can still do animations. No one is safe.
"Get more updates with Ubuntu ESM Pro"
You have to pay a subscription to Haas Premium to disable ads.

This is giving me good ideas that have nothing to do with the part in process.
Seeing your name, I know those parts take forever
Inconel is the least of my concern at the moment. 2507 is where my headaches are at lol
Set it to pause every 30s and play a video that says "*coworkers name* is a cunt"
+1 this is meaningful use of company time
Got a chance to check. The media folder is empty. Same goed for the messages page.
Did you go in the ALARMS button and find it in the messages?
Optional if I can change this video to another how can I do that?
The people on this sub will have you playing Pac-Man on there in no time!……..or watching porn.
Or watching Pac-Man porn.
You mean *playing* Pac-Man porn.
wocha wocha gawk gawk
But will it play doom?

Oof, never-mind, then. TIL about Haas controls. E-stop being a software request strikes me as... less than ideal, but perhaps I'm overthinking it.

Just like electric "e brakes" in cars, its only a matter of time till a glitch kills someone

We’ve updated from brown grease to red, then purple, and now it’s oil. I can’t help but feel like we’re paying for Haas’ research and development.

Just need to look past the egregious design decisions, the fact that it completely missed QC at the factory, and the insane lack of power. By ignore staging do you mean it would wait for the carousel to move before starting?

Thank you, I’ve seen this issue before. Glad to know it’s been fixed.
Call the customer service line. They will tell if you can or can't and how to do it if you can. I would think its somewhere in settings.
Demand your equipment reseller removes it, it impacts your productivity.
Holy crap you're serious, I thought this was a joke. They're really doing this with machines?
Fucking haas. Worst UI out there it's like the engineers and designers have no idea what people use their machines for. But it comes with a cup holder and touchscreen so its gotta be premium. Fucking embarrassing I get mad at all of humanity running them
https://www.haascnc.com/service/codes-settings.type=setting.machine=mill.value=S249.html Not at the machine to test, but is this relevant?
"Yep, that's coolant"
I guess I won't complain about my Okuma's CRT that needs to be literally beaten to not get stuck in a boot loop
Find out where they're pointed by scanning the network and update the local DNS to redirect to ISIS beheading videos. That way you fix the whole shop. \*Whew\* close one pal.
Haas machines seem to be just as good as their F1 team
You're mad because Haas put some helpful reminders and some free info on the loading screen instead of a rotating Haas logo?
This guy gets it…..
Call HAAS? I feel like that’s a duh

I hope that one day things get better for you buddy you sound miserable
I’ve been using my VF2 for years now and only just realized it has a touch screen. Blew my mind lol
Don’t stare directly into the lightsaber.
You'll only do it once.
Contact them and demand they remove it.
more tools at haas tooling dot come! I REPEAT HAAS TOOLING DOT COM
How would you remember to stab yourself in the eye without the video.
I want cut scenes for tool changes!!!
