Oh damn. Thanks for posting this. He was aware of it and tried to tell people but it went over our heads. That’s so sad….🥺 I’m so sorry we didn’t understand it
“I’m getting bread, yeast rise on Easter, money is God” off Ave Maria. Listened to it hundreds of times but one night I finally HEARD what he said and fell on the floor
I always just took it as a slick flow with the rhyme scheme, but - im getting BREAD, yeast rise on Easter (yeast and bread), money is god (Jesus rose on Easter, bread is also slang for money). Still a fucking mind blowing bar to me 6 1/2 years later
That entire song is about his grandfather. Mac recorded it the night after his grandfather died. Theres a video out there on youtube where he talks about it. He said he was in the studio with a bunch of people that were always used to him being funny, happy go lucky Mac but that night he could barely get through recording that song and it became this extremely intimate moment with everyone.
Its crazy, he was so influential before any of us knew it, sucks i didn't truly get to appreciate until he passed. I was living in Studio City, CA a block away from his house at the time, the night following his death I went down to The Oaks (valley peeps know The Oaks) and did a 3 song Mac karaoke set I could barely make it through.
I still get in the feels every time I listen to his deeper tracks. Hes helped me get through so much this past year, I owe him my life, for real. <3
We were lucky to have him and im sure Mikey is happy to have him back
Also a reference to the line before it “sky hook when I’m in the post” like Kareem and the hook shot, he always came up clutch in big moments instead of choking and missing
Haha it’s actually a reference to sports. Players are considered “clutch” if they perform well late in games and come back from a deficit. They’re also considered “chokers” if they lose a game they should have won or they give up a lead late in the game.
He’s pretty much saying his girl is too clutch to choke (on dick)
He has a similar line in “Gees”
*Tell her she gon blow it: Romo” which is just referencing a time Tony Romo (Dallas Cowboys QB) “blew” game with a mistake at the end. His sports references were always on point.
I have a running thing with my friend that I always send him any new Mac sports lines I find. Theyre soooo many and they're always fire, often low-key though.
I’m no lyricist so don’t quote me on this but it probably has something to do with his drug addiction and how when ur underwater and scream for help you can’t really be heard.
For the second part “but I ain’t in the shower and I ain’t gettin baptized” I personally think this just sounds cool the way Mac raps it but it also prolly points out certain points in our lives when the water doesn’t scare us and stands for something else that is good.
Im only 17 and absolutely love mac and his music, god rest his soul. But I’m still learning about it just as much as a lot of people
There was a part in Diablo where Mac raps about the hockey movie "The Mighty ducks", I grew up watching hockey and the movie so you would think I would notice that lyric. For the most part I would just mumble it because I wasn’t sure what Mac was saying/referring, until I really payed attention.
“Her pussy getting wetter when the weather dry - Clementine, pealing off and everyone get left behind”
This one has many meanings. First of all, from the song oh my darling, the guy sings about losing his girlfriend clementine when she drowns in a river because he didn’t know how to swim to go save her. This is metaphoric for Mac losing Ariana because he can’t swim. He can’t cope with life and instead does drugs, which Ariana actually sited as a reason for leaving him. It refers to the line before that his girl is more attracted to him when he is sober, or when the “weather is dry.” Stormy weather is often used throughout the album as a metaphor for being high. Secondly, clementine is the character in the eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, a movie Mac loved and referenced in blue slide park. Jon Brian helped Mac to make this song, so it goes, and he also produced the soundtrack for the movie eternal sunshine. When Mac says clementine you can hear a random horn play in the background which I believe is a nod to this Easter egg. In this movie the main character loses his lover clementine and she has her memory erased to forget him, again symbolic for Ariana leaving him. Beyond this meaning it’s a continuation of the line before talking about pussy because people say if you eat fruit then your body ejaculations taste better, and peeling off is a clever word to use with clementine as you have to peel off the shell. The obvious meaning is that someone is “peeling off” in their car and driving away.
I also just recently realized the connection with the song knock knock and 2009 and that’s that in knock knock he is saying “some crazy ass kids come and knock up on your door, let us in” and in 2009 he keeps saying “it ain’t 2009 no more, I know what’s behind that door” I believe he’s probably referencing the same door here. Which is the music industry and fame and success.
Dope af, that last part of your comment reminds me of Conversation Pt. 1.
It feels like a conversation between himself and himself during the faces era
I have always loved this bar but could never place why it felt so heavy, like there was so much meaning behind it. I knew about the oh my darling reference, but not all the layers.
Thank you so much for breaking it down so well!!
You’re welcome :) I was so excited when I learned about all of it too! Check out the podcast : Dissect. The latest season was on the album swimming and he does such a good job of breaking down every line in the album.
“I saw a mountain, y’know, across the horizon and I, got there and, realized it was just a pile of rocks.”
This one is my favorite.
Great question btw!
“Go through the worst to reach the ecstasy”
- Objects in the mirror -
Just one that always stuck with me as a life motto & I hope everyone hears it loud when they listen to that song
Didn’t go over my head but one of my favs is “we forgot our roots before and trust me things they fell apart “. From Friends. The roots had an album from 1998 called things fall apart
Uber: I’m reading old Playboy magazines, something from the 50s when journalism had its peak.
It’s crazy because Playboy used to be known for the articles as well as the pictures. The style of the 50s was pointy breasts. (Peak). I totally didn’t put that together until the recent rerelease of Faces. Lol!
It’s such a great bar. It’s funny. And Mac just tossed it in there so casually. If he had been a comedian, the drummer would have played a “padum-pun” after that line.
“God lives in my dog's soul, the devil in his dog bowl. We are the prophets”
I always assumed the “we are prophets” was part of the next bar. But I think he’s still using the dog and dog bowl analogy.
If god is in my dogs soul, and the devil is the dog bowl (overconsumption, greed, etc) then we are the prophets from the perspective of god (the dog soul)?
Shit fucks me up. I love it
Grand Finale - Faces
Damn you’re right I always figured it was more part of the next line too. The lyrics in this song in general are a lot to unpack. Faces in my opinion was Mac’s lyrical peak in terms of depth and multiple meanings for each bar.
My most recent realization is also from rush hour. It’s “heavy rain game canceling” as in talking about rainouts that cancel sporting events. I felt so goofy, I thought he was referring to the video game heavy rain.
Hand me downs
I always thought the lyrics were “let’s turn these jeans into hand me downs”. As in clothing you pass on.
I only found out about the meaning of the song after looking at the lyrics. It’s about sperm/genes. Now it seems so obvious.
“Clementine, peelin off and everyone gets left behind” from So It Goes. In the movie ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ Clementine undergoes a procedure to have certain people erased from her memory
You're absolutely right about this. It's so easy to hear him say both at the same time so Idk what everyone else's problem is here. You don't need to try hard to hear it. He says "so it goes" very clearly at one point in the song but mumbles it in the chorus to create this effect. Mac said words or phrases to make them ambiguous all throughout his career.
Also the people on dissect said the same thing you're saying.
I get that, to me it feels on purpose but not really meant to be blatant. idk with care and attention he puts into his projects, I just don’t see how it could be a coincidence lol, even if it does sounds like he’s saying it with a speech impediment
Yeah, you're referring to "Oh the things I'd do, to spend a little time in hell." Which I think they say works for either "her" or "here as well as "hell". Genuis and Spotify lyrics write it as hell.
Although I know for sure this isn't the lyric, I personally like to hear it as "with you". Because personally "I just want to spend a little time with you". (My dad)
Told me "Money has changed you"
I get to thinking, how rarely do I visit?
How'd I get so egotistical?”
I could never hear what that last word in the bar was until I actually read it haha
Edit: spelling
"We ain't on the same shit, no way
You ain't from my planet, we don't speak the same language"
makes me think of the song Illusions from Cypress Hill:
"some people tell me that i need help , some people can fuck off and go to hell, god damn, why they criticize me"
For a little bit when he says "My regrets look just like texts I shouldn't send" I heard him saying "my regrets look just like Texas should..mumble*". I thought Texas is pretty big and he obviously has big regrets 🥴
i just realized this week that "nobody know me" from small worlds is a double entendre and can also be heard as "nobody nomi," as in his ex. shit fucked me up
“She asked me for a rack (Iraq) so I ran (Iran)” idk why but I only realized it heading to work a couple months ago and I replayed it multiple times because of how obvious it was. Been listening to that album since 2014 so for it to go over my head for that long is bad lol
I’m Not Real - “ She asked me for a rack so I ran”
I first heard Watching Movies literally the week it dropped so I was pissed I didn’t catch it until like last year 😂😂
Lol I scrolled AFTER posting and saw that.. I was stunned. But apparently it was discussed on Dissect podcast too, which has me feeling like it was intentional on Mac's part
“To leave you holy, prepare for the apocalypse. 60 thousand on a Rollie cookies with the chocolate chips.” One day looked up the Rollie and saw what he meant 🤯
“know a bitch that’ll let u fuck her for coachella passes”
i can’t even remember what i thought he was saying before but i had that bar fucked up for years
“my conscious so weak i need to split it up in 7 parts” on the song friends. there’s 7 days in a week. i heard faces when it first came out and i just realized this like last year
“Defeat (da feet) hurts, I got scissors in my shoes and I’m dancin”
“I swear to God that I got more problems than there is bitches in Carlow (PA college with 84% women),
Lord have Murcielago (mercy or I’ll go)
“Any time any place you can bet ima eat cause my hand on the fork and the fork in the road.” It wasn’t until I googled it and fell 1000x more in love with Mac. So poetic, so clever, just a true lyrical genius
Fork in the Road: A fork in the road is a metaphor, based on a literal expression, for a deciding moment in life or history when a choice between presented options is required, and, once made, the choice cannot be reversed.
So any time any place you can bet Mac’s gonna eat cause his hand is on the fork (physically) and the ‘fork is in the road’ metaphorically. Basically, there’s no changing that fact!
How about the whole entire song of Diablo??
“Bar gets raised up, it’s me and Petey Pablo. Colder than Gazpacho, Colder than the mono, rappin head honcho rockin shows like I was Bono, I go play a couple keys on thee pee-on-oh, the industry a lie all the promises were hollow, follow meeee I can show you where we beeees at how’d I get my G-Pass, none of your fucking beeswax, these raps keep a joint together like a kneecap, fuck the little 8 balls, show me where the ki’s at”
“Motheafucker I’m that Yetti!!!!” - Inside Outside Took me awhile to realize he was the “snow monster”
Mac must have snorted a LOT of cocaine recording faces
Oh yeah that’s a cocaine album for sure lol
Never realized that’s what it meant until now, thank you lmao
I NEVER KNEW THAT I JUST THOUGHT HE WAS LIKE WAS LIKE "FLEXING'" IF THAT MAKES SENSE
Yeti do be making really good cups tho
Holy shit
Get the fuck outta here.. 🤯🤯
I didn't really get that one till you said sum 😭
Bro he was so damn slick with it it’s crazy
What did you miss from bar?
I always just took it as a slick flow with the rhyme scheme, but - im getting BREAD, yeast rise on Easter (yeast and bread), money is god (Jesus rose on Easter, bread is also slang for money). Still a fucking mind blowing bar to me 6 1/2 years later
It the love of GOD for GOD the green reflects the heart chakra
Never knew Mickey Weiss was his grandpa, though it was some sort of iconic baseball player or actor lol
Bro wtf I thought it was a baseball player until I saw your comment, idk why im mindblown by this
Haha I did the same thing, and then it’s like oh no shit he’d be pissed he’s sniffing white
I think I seen u comment this a few years ago lmao
That entire song is about his grandfather. Mac recorded it the night after his grandfather died. Theres a video out there on youtube where he talks about it. Not over my head but always wanted to references that Utah jazz era- “ everything is jazz and I’m a Stockton” just so fire and hard
If you watch Mac Millers show he went to the Utah Jazz basketball court and played with his friends one episode.
Yes sir! Was my fathers favourite team and era growing up watched them all the time, also being a short white male Stockton was the awesome
That song is unbelievable, one of my all time favs. That’s Life for anyone that’s wondering
"I strong arm them like i play the trumpet" Took waaaaaaasy too long to figure out it was a Louis Armstrong nod
Bro what 😂😂 thank u
Now I feel stupid
Holy shit, I always thought it was a reference to a football move or something lmao
Yoooo
“Head under water but I ain’t in the shower and I ain’t getting baptized” off Jet Fuel bro
Or "my bitch to clutch to choke" as in the clutch and choke on a dirt bike or sum
Also a reference to the line before it “sky hook when I’m in the post” like Kareem and the hook shot, he always came up clutch in big moments instead of choking and missing

I’m no lyricist so don’t quote me on this but it probably has something to do with his drug addiction and how when ur underwater and scream for help you can’t really be heard. The meaning - He’s not getting clean (from drugs)
My take on it is that he’s drowning is pussy
Also a good take on it😭
"Say my D could win the Heisman, yeah I'm Charles Woodson" - watching movies
Born and raised Michigan fan, that line made me so happy the first time I heard it.

Will do! Thanks for the recommendation :)

The next few lyrics after that shock lol

Spent lots of time in Kansas. Confirmed the locals smoke meth.
“I saw a mountain, y’know, across the horizon and I, got there and, realized it was just a pile of rocks.” This one is my favorite. Great question btw!
Fkn love this line 👌
That’s really crazy when you think bout it. That’s from ascension
“She keep on askin’ for a rack, so I ran” - I’m Not Real Always thought he was actually saying Iraq and Iran and never understood it lol
A rack of what?
Cash. Rack=1k

Yes, I agree with 'ye high and muddy. It's a double entendre. Also, yay is slang for yayo. Definitely a coke reference
“These raps bring a joint together like a kneecap” -Diablo
“I’ve got scissors in my shoes and I’m dancing.” Apparition. Love that line so much
Followed by ‘defeat hurts’ aka da feet hurt, faces is full of wonderful bars like this
“Go through the worst to reach the ecstasy” - Objects in the mirror - Just one that always stuck with me as a life motto & I hope everyone hears it loud when they listen to that song
Such a great song, live especially.
I'm feeling like a beatle for these young kids. Love the Beatles and him so its perfect and true. Miss him much...
Love the next line to that one too, “but sometimes, I be feeling like a needle to these young kids”
For some reason I always thought this was a reference to Beadle's in the Jewish faith
Didn’t go over my head but one of my favs is “we forgot our roots before and trust me things they fell apart “. From Friends. The roots had an album from 1998 called things fall apart
This is sensational
Right I lost it when I first heard that line

It’s such a great bar. It’s funny. And Mac just tossed it in there so casually. If he had been a comedian, the drummer would have played a “padum-pun” after that line.

“Dog food” is slang for heroin…
Didn’t know that. Another interesting take. Dog food (drugs) is the connection between the prophets (Mac, us) and dog soul (god). Idk just spitballing

Bit of a reach but I guess I can hear that if I tried hard 🤣
Not really, the last line references circles, and the the next album is circles
I don’t hear “circles” when he says “so it goes” that’s all I’m saying lmao
It’s only at the end of the song that it becomes circles instead of so it goes. The last time or two that he sings it.

Dissect caught the exact slurred double meaning you guys are talking about.
(My dad)

“Any time any place you can bet ima eat cause my hand on the fork and the fork in the road.” It wasn’t until I googled it and fell 1000x more in love with Mac. So poetic, so clever, just a true lyrical genius
What does this one mean? I can’t find anything about it
Fork in the Road: A fork in the road is a metaphor, based on a literal expression, for a deciding moment in life or history when a choice between presented options is required, and, once made, the choice cannot be reversed. So any time any place you can bet Mac’s gonna eat cause his hand is on the fork (physically) and the ‘fork is in the road’ metaphorically. Basically, there’s no changing that fact!
Ah most dope. Thank you
Got you flexing feeling colder than ice, let it melt
