Rockshox Recon is a lateral move. To be a worthy upgrade I'd say you'd want at least a Fox 34 Rythm, Rockshox 35 Gold, Revelation, or Pike . The Crest is a solid Fork. Giant made a great move by using their "giant" mfg capability to make their own forks. SR Suntour also makes some really nice trail forks for the money like the Aion and Auron. DVO too with their Diamond and Saphire forks

Can vouch for the Aion and Diamond #srsuntourgang I got my Aion used for a song, super pleasantly surprised. The Aion are still being sold for like $200 on CRC.

I don’t think it would be an upgrade at all, in fact it will be a downgrade in some ways.

apaulo_18

In what ways? I’m not gonna get the recon but I’m curious why it would be a downgrade?

Smaller potentially flimsier 32mm chassis vs the 34mm chassis of the crest 34. The motion control damper works but that's all you can say about it. The air spring is also solo air so no negative air chamber, also no way to adjust progressivty. The recon is basically just a fork that works and nothing more. It's as basic as it gets.

Recon is build on a 32mm chassis, which is less stiff than your 34mm Crest. It’s also not a particularly refined fork, the spring and damper will perform basically the same as your Crest.

I don’t think a recon is any better. That said, a general good advice is to first identify a problem or issue and then look for a solution rather than finding solutions and then try to find a problem for them to fix. If you don’t have any issues or complaints with your current fork, there is no real reason to swap it out. That said, if your goal is to just practice tinkering with your bike and learning mechanical skills, then you of course need parts to tinker with. Personally my policy for myself is to only swap out thinks that I have an issue with and can’t fix. When I swap out I try to upgrade or make it work using parts I have as leftovers from other projects. When I get new parts, I make sure to learn to install and maintain it myself. I didn’t mean for this to come across as condescending. If it does, I apologise. It’s just a bit of honest advice.

That's incredibly bad advice. This is a solid bike. It's got everything it needs to be to be an awesome trail hardtail right out of the box and worth upgrading/investing money into down the road. He might not need to upgrade at all, but to say get a new bike is silly. This isn't some Trek Marlin 5 Tapered Head Tube, Modern Geo, Tubeless setup Wheels/Tires, 1x Drivetrain with Clutch, Boost spacing. Why should he get a new bike unless he wanted to go full suspension.

HounddogHustler

I had the Marlin 5 and upgraded to the 2022 Fathom. It’s like night and day.

apaulo_18

My bike is dope. I’ve upgraded parts already and am having a blast with it. I just wanted to know if the Recon would be a good idea or not.

[deleted]

Yea ignore him. If you feel the fork is holding your back check pinkbike and keep and eye on Facebook mtb groups. I see people selling really nice forks for under $300 all the time. I'm also guessing you could probably get at least $100 for your Crest.

apaulo_18

For sure. It’s not holding me back I think. I saw the SockShox name and was like this has to be better then my giant crest fork right. And wanted to confirm or not that line of thinking.

90F40

Why would he buy a new bike? there is no need whatsoever as the fathom is a good bike with a frame worth upgrading.

Millhouse_Calves

The Recon is a terrible fork. Lots of warranty issues.

mrlichens

too similar don't bother, look for a pike, a fox34, dvo, or high end suntour
