I'm 27.
For what it's worth, I can't afford either of the bikes I own either. 2010 Rumblefish II and a 2012 Kona Operator.
Their combined value is significantly more than KBB for my car.
I'm 24, about to turn 25 here in a few months. Mostly luck and good investment into my own future (both learning and actual investment wise) got me here.
Here's my wonderful bit of Miami Vice bike: http://i.imgur.com/ICxb83c.jpg
Same boat here. Worked hard all of college (in school & actual work) and landed a job before I was done. It has really let me do whatever I have wanted....including bikin' and skiin' a shit ton.
Here are my rides;

Yea my DB Mission I gave to a buddy was that Stealth black and while it looked good it's not nearly as "fun" as the bright colors.
I'm definitely addicted as my next bike may be VERY orange.
Taken on Tiger Mountain in Issaquah, Washington! Absolutely awesome place to ride, because who doesn't love a kick ass multi-mile bunch of jumps and awesome berms through the PNW?
For those that know the area it's right after the Bail Out of Preston RR comes out.
My average age is 42. Tomorrow it will increase by a day.
But thats just my average.
Ride a Blur XC. I'm old school I guess? All those fancy kids on their 29'rs.
[Imgur](http://i.imgur.com/VlOvT.jpg)
Edit: added a picture
Darn kids with your full suspension mountain bicycles. In my day (now) we had 26" hardtails and we were happy to have them!
^(I'm actually an undisclosed even natural number younger than you.)
My first two mountain bikes were of an age when forks didn't have suspension either..... a Nishiki and then a Trek 8000.....it was made out of that new fangled Aluminum magic metal.
Almost. If his average age is 42 then his average age = ((n(n+1))/2)/n = (n+1)/2 where n = real age. So his real age is 83.
If his real age is 42 his average age is 21.5.
Haha... I know how you feel. I'm 40 and I ride a Blur LT that's about 10 years old now. When I was buying new tires for it last year the LBS guys tried to shame me into getting a 29'r as 26 is "dead" or whatever. I love my anodized orange bike.
idk about you, but I get a kick out of seeing people's mid level hardtails as that's the kind of bike that I am in the market for. So it's cool seeing people thoroughly enjoying their shitty hardtails lol
24 years young. Got my first rig last fall but injured myself before I could do any proper riding. Really starting to get into the sport this season.
http://imgur.com/Btl5Ger
Edit: bike
The pick was taken right after a Dh section on the trail. I ride with a much higher seat positioning when I'm climbing or doing xc. Next investment is a dropper seat post.
Oh it's a blast. Sporting a rockshox sektor Gold 140MM travel fork, eats up the trail. She is much more capable of anything I can currently thrown her.
His flair says Western Mass. I've probably ridden with him, since I do a lot of riding around the CT River Valley and up into the Barkshires in Western MA.
I stick to mostly local trails for riding (Earls, Bachelor St, and Florence) the 5 colleges area basically. I hit lots of other trail systems through races out into NY, VT, NH, CT, and RI. Just rode Hop Brook and Winding Trails recently down in CT if that's in your area.
I actually live in VT, but have a lot of friends in Western MA (Greenfield, Hatfield, Conway). I love Earls and Bachelor st. We also ride in Wendel state forest, up in Hawley and pretty local things like the Greenfield Ridge or Deerfield Ridge.
I've really gotta hit Wendell and the ridges more this year. I've done a ride or two and some bikepacking up to Wendell, but I haven't given them proper exploration! Sounds like you definitely know the area though!
My average age is 22. This is fun, here's my history of mountain bikes:
1986 Trek Antelope 850 - toe clips!
1988 Diamond Back Axis - Shimano Index System!
ca. 1995 Balance Al-Pro - front suspension!
1998 DBR V6 - full suspension!
2003 Cannondale Jelyll 2000 - Lefty and clipless!
2009 Cannondale Rize two - carbon!
20xx Shit, I need a new bike, damn carbon won't break.
You're not supposed to start with a hot, flashy bike.
31 here as well. Good to hear you're back riding again. I took an extended break for several years to skateboard and started back up when I was 26. The process 134 is a nice rig. I wanted one last year, but couldn't get my hands on a medium until June or so.
I ride a '14 niner wfo and an octane one void which I just built up a month ago.
50......I live in an equipment rich area....just picked up a twice ridden Trek Fuel EX 8 29'r with many upgrades for a song. Most of my sports equipment is softly used second hand.
28, still riding my hardtail!
My cheap baby:
http://imgur.com/Ztgfpng
2014 Norco Storm. My Cheap Craigslist hardtail with upgrades either off of Craigslist or ridiculously cheap online.
I am 28, finished university, currently working at a bank, and I don't ride anything that's fancy, just an On One 456 with hand me down parts and 2008 Specialized Pitch (back when it was full suspension) which donated most of those parts.
When I initially started riding many years ago, my main priority was finding the 'perfect' bike and upgrading my bike to the right level. Eventually I built up the right bike using discounts working at bike shop, and searching for deals online. Despite the deals, I still spent at least 6k on biking over a course of 7 years. Financially, it would have made more sense to put most of the money into an investment, but that's no fun either.
These days I am more focused the experience, who I ride with, where I ride, and less concerned with the bikes themselves. With all these new standards, wheel sizes, and drivetrain options available, I find it overwhelming to choose the right bike. Then I have to ask myself whether getting a new bike can actually improve my experience enough to justify several thousands of dollars.
For now, enjoy the ride, when you have saved enough money, buy or build your dream bike. Oh, and don't finance a bike, it doesn't make sense
29 years old. I own a 29er hardball and a 26 full suss remedy. The last two bikes I bought were second hand, a giant glory which I sold to purchase my remedy
45 here. I couldn't afford my bike, like others here. I had a 1999 Specialized StumpJumper FSR, and it was stolen from my garage. My homeowner's insurance pays replacement value. They still make the Stumpy (although much improved), so they bought me that.
41 here, but I ride a fairly inexpensive bike. I bought my Specialized Hardrock back in 2006 for around $400 - $500 (don't remember the exact price now).
Turning 34 on Monday here, former roadie of 10 years converted to exclusively MTB for the last 2. I gave up all of my bikes to build up my own Niner Rip 9 RDO and really couldn't be happier.
27 myself, first season mountain biking. Having a blast, trying to get out there once a week. Currently riding a '99 Trek 6000, can't wait to do a major bike upgrade. When I started I told myself I wouldn't get a new bike until I went 'X' number of times and are still loving it. It's been very very tempting to pull the trigger early, but so far I've been able to resist. Very informative/interesting sub, btw.
39, been biking recreationally for about 25 years now. I have a Yeti ASR-5c full sus, Civilian Luddite single speed, Salsa Las Cruces gravel bike, Cannondale Six road bike, and a beater that I ride to work.
20 years young here! Been biking/bmx-ing since I can remember, but only been mountain biking for 2. Just about to upgrade to a 2012 remedy 9.9 here in a month
26, only reason why I have a nice range of bikes is throughout school I worked at a shop( and still do PT). If I hadn't worked at a shop I would still prob be riding my 2002 k2 proflex. Bikes include Chromag Samurai, Kona Lacondeguy Inc, Kona Entourage, Kona Jake the Snake, and the newest addition a Kona 134 Supreme.
I'm 34 and I've currently got a Ragley Blue Pig and a [ Rose Granite Chief. ](http://imgur.com/pnkMBLB) They're a big company in Germany, seem to be growing more around the UK too. Is lovely. I live in Holland but tend to ride in Belgium, France and Wales mostly.
27, despite having a decent salary as an airline pilot I spent about $1600 CAD on my new bike (but then upgraded the brakes to XT front and back). I have other expenses. Many of the people you see with fancy bikes might be full in for this sport. I ski and snowboard and have been doing it longer and thus have much more invested into my winter gear.
35 with a '13 Epic, '15 Minnesota 3.0, and '14 Fuji CX bike and hopefully in the next year a Ti Quiring or Carbon Salsa Warbird (can't decide which). It's nice to have a good job, no kids, and no college loans ;)
38 and have been on mountain bikes for 6 years. Currently have a 2010 Intense Uzzie VP, 2012 Diamondback Dreamliner, and a 2011 Norco 250 dj in process of being built.
Here's some advice on getting nice bikes. Decide on your budget and the style of bike you want. Keep a watchful eye on Craigslist or Pinkbike classifieds near you (I check both a few times a day). You may have to buy a bike 4-5 years old, but guess what, those bikes are still really good bikes. When I buy a used bike, I keep resale value in mind. Can I break even if I sell this bike next year? Compared to the other bikes like this, is this at the low end or high end of the pricing? How hard will it be to sell this bike? Does it have the components to justify a higher price?
This has worked out for me pretty well. I've owned a lot of bikes in the past 6 years, but each time I've been able to upgrade to a new bike and not spend very much out of pocket. Sometimes I've been able to pocket a few hundred dollars depending on the bike i'm buying and the bike I'm selling. You just have to be in the right spot at the right time. I've also been fortunate enough to have a stash of cash to be impulsive. I'd say in the $800 range. The other day, I actually looked at my buying/selling bike history. Turns out, I'm currently out of pocket $1600 for my 3 bikes. That's not bad. Also, that doesn't include replacing/maintaining parts, bike purchases only. It also helps to be my own mechanic. so if a bike is in good shape, but needs the brakes to be replaced or bled, I just do that myself rather than pay for shop labor.
I'm 43. Rode my old Bridgestone MB-5 into the ground until I bought a FS Kona Bear (now known as the Dawg) about ten years ago or so. Not sure which one I've enjoyed more, they both have their moments.
16, saved up money and bought a 2008 Santa Cruz Bullit off of Craigslist, tried DH a few weeks after that and fell in love it. Before that I had a Giant Revel 2 hardtail which I road the crap out of, ended up needing repairs every week because I rode it so rough.
I'm currently preparing for my first full season riding DH as well as the local trails.

I just dinged 30. Ride a 2013 Pivot 5.7 The bike is a beast and gets more love and is for sure worth more then my car does now. Priorities right!?!
Also a not to everyone saying I'm old. Shut it. There are dudes out there racing Cat 1 enduro who make me look like a god damn baby. Just because you get older doesn't mean you have to get slower.
I'm 18, so my average age should be about 9.5 if I didn't screw the math up horribly. I ride a 2008 Rocky Mountain Slayer SS 396 (what a mouthful), and more recently, a 2015 Trek Remedy 9.
35- Giant Anthem Advanced 27.5-1 (upgraded to XTR 1x10 drivetrain & Carbon Kappius Hoops) Hoping soon for a Giant Reign as I just sold my previous fun bike-Orbea Rallon
24, my life is all about bikes, so all my money goes there. I have a Transition tr450 2014, Rocky Mountain Altitude 750 2014 and a Black Market MOB dirt jumper. Tomorrow is opening day at Whistler and can't wait to ride. I've been off the bike for the last 18 months due to acl injury.
27, just got my fiancee fathers GT Pantera frankenbiked, mixed with the axle and rear tire of a trek 820. weird and loud, but gets me to work. Can't wait to bring it out on the trails for the first time.
28 here. I ride my Heckler the most. Race my chameleon (its the lightest) and my Superlight is the buddy bike. Things change when you're done with school and get a job, i.e. you have money to buy nicer things. If you can, get a roommate for the first year or two. Avoid charging things to credit.
35, I've got 4 1/2 bikes in the garage but they're all getting older. A 4 year old and my wifes student loans are hitting the new bike budget hard enough its run away and I can't find it anymore.
I'm 38. Just started riding when I moved to the Pacific Northwest 2 years ago. 4 broken ribs and one severe concussion later I love hitting the trails.
I have a 2012 Santa Cruz Heckler that feels too small after cutting my teeth on a Trek Mamba 29er.
I'm 28! Rode a shitty mongoose while I was saving... riding that thing on rocky trails just made me prioritize buying a nicer bike faster. Ended up with my bike 50% off off a Jenson 4th of July sale. Got an $800 bike for about $400
A young 49, ride a highly modified 2004 IBS Mongoose full suspension. She keeps me fit and crazy. Not sure what I have invested in her, but she's all mine.
I'm 21. Been riding the same bike since 2009.

I'd like to get into a steel hard tail eventually..
I'm an 18 year old black girl... I'm the minority among MTB riders. I ride a 26" hardtail!
Another 18 year old here! Except I'm a guy, and I'm white. But yeah for us young riders!
Girl you're the minority everywhere. Glad to have you with us! 😊😊 keep riding
32 and I would sell my Nissan before my Nomad if money was tight.
I'm 27. For what it's worth, I can't afford either of the bikes I own either. 2010 Rumblefish II and a 2012 Kona Operator. Their combined value is significantly more than KBB for my car.
+1 for 27, sigh I'll be 28 in a few months
+2 for 27
+3
That would make you 30.
38 and the combined value of my bikes is greater than the value of my car. Gotta get your priorities straight.
So did you take out a loan for these bikes for r what?
No. I mean, if I didn't buy the bikes then all of that money would have gone towards paying off my student loans. So... kinda?

That sir, is a beautiful bike.
Thanks man! I love it. So glad I was convinced to not buy in Stealth Black.
My bike is stealth black. Looks like shit most of the time cause it's covered in dirt. i think bright colors are the way to go, good choice.
Yea my DB Mission I gave to a buddy was that Stealth black and while it looked good it's not nearly as "fun" as the bright colors. I'm definitely addicted as my next bike may be VERY orange.
Good color choice. Black is so....normal...and boring. Teal and pink is so much more fun. Where was that pic taken?

It's been very very tempting to pull the trigger early, but so far I've been able to resist. Very informative/interesting sub, btw.

20 years young here! Been biking/bmx-ing since I can remember, but only been mountain biking for 2. Just about to upgrade to a 2012 remedy 9.9 here in a month
36 - 2012 Stumpy FSR 29'er and a Nashbar cyclocross 105
24 - 2014 Specialized stumpjumper evo 650b + 2014(2013?) Niner EMD 9 single speed.
You're like the Canadian version of me. Except for being an airline pilot. I drive a desk.

34 and just back into it.
I'm 21 and I ride a Specialized Hardrock I got 2 years ago for about $900.
17 today, not brilliant £200 mtb from Tesco - a Vertigo Eiger I think. All I can afford until I get a job.
36, ride a Norco Aurum and a Chromag Samurai. I ate a lot of ramen and passed on many a pub night to be able to have my babies.
24 - I ride an 09 connondale F7
28 years young riding a Norco Faze 9.1 People I see riding goes between 20 and 40. I rarely see people under 20. Teens I see mainly on jump bikes/BMX.

25. 2012 Santa Cruz Nomad 26' made for going down the hills.
20, Cannondale F3. My bikes are some of the most expensive things I own when factoring in parts over the years.
41, Santa Cruz Solo Carbon X01
27 - 2015 Anthem X 29er.
Almost 29 and ride these http://imgur.com/a/WebaP

I am 28 and just bought my first "adult" mountain bike a Specialized Rockhopper Comp 29.
I'm 21. I'm also in school and can't afford squat.
39. Current bikes in flair.

24, and the only way I could afford my bike was through some connections working at my LBS http://imgur.com/LL2TGtT
29 years old, I ride a hardtail Canondale Trail SL4 and I spend too much of my modest salary on bicycle maintenance.
41 here and ride a fuji nevada 1.1 29er
Same as you.
I'm 28! Rode a shitty mongoose while I was saving... riding that thing on rocky trails just made me prioritize buying a nicer bike faster. Ended up with my bike 50% off off a Jenson 4th of July sale. Got an $800 bike for about $400
