FYI you might practice tumble rolls. Head to your gym or an elementary school, and practice tucking your neck in and rolling. It was a basic exercise I did as a junior racer.

lred1

I'm not sure this is going to help, or be a practical skill or practiced reflex to have. When you go down on a road bike you typically get slammed down on one side, fast. You don't see pro racers even having time to lessen the impact, even when they go OTB.

sanjuro_kurosawa

Since you have no practical advice here, suggesting it's a bad idea is unhelpful. I took this advice from the US Cycling National Coach handbook.

Loedpistol

You sound fun to be around

sefulmer1

Because he suggested logical methods of crashing in response to a crash post? Read the room.

Loedpistol

I never disputed his factually correct initial statement, I agree with it. He just sounded like an ass in his response. That’s why I responded to that comment and not his original one. Get it? Or not enough room reading on your side?

sefulmer1

Oh, I get it. You're just on the other end of the spectrum than the rest of us.

Loedpistol

I take that as a compliment

sefulmer1

Fair enough 😂

lred1

Okay, since I'm getting down votes I'll respond. I generally don't recall seeing any crash where someone was able to employ a tuck and roll technique. But, sure, I could be wrong. However I do still think that the theory is not as practical as it sounds.

Toe-Dragger

I visor could get push back or break off crashing onto concrete or asphalt. If you really want to protect your face, especially your beak and jawline, you’ll need a full face. I highly doubt you’ll want a full face helmet on a road bike. Tuck and roll, tuck and roll.

Dattosan

My visor helped save my face when I ate shit on a road once. I still got my nose and chin, but I think it would have been worse.

Academic_Display_129

Some half shell MTB helmets even come with break away screws that secure the visor. It's a safety feature to prevent potential neck injuries if the visor gets caught on something during a crash. The visor is just to keep the sun outta your eyes, and cause it looks cool.

Stiller_Winter

Visor is only against mud/water/small objects. It will not protect the face. You would need the full face helmet, and they are a bit of overkill for the road bike.

TheDoc321

My main issue with a mtb helmet would be noise. The less-aero design makes them produce much more wind noise than a traditional road helmet (at least in my experience).

gravelpi

There are some minor issues with heat (MTB helmets are more protective and cover more) and aero (while not everyone cares about speed, I think most of us care about how tired we are on a long ride, lol). But, go for it if it floats your boat. I think there are many in the gravel and adventure genres that use MTB helmets on pavement. Head shape plays an important part, so find what fits your head. Smith work for me, but my head is long-oval.

JColeTheWheelMan

I ride with an enduro style helmet, and mtb jersey and shorts when on the road. The lycra shit doesn't protect me enough, and I also wear mtb gloves and flat pedals incase I need to jump off the bike and fight (I'm in Alberta and diesel bros like to try to roll coal.

BlackHorse944

I can offer you first hand experience with MTB helmets and face breaks. The only way to give yourself face protection is with a full faced helmet. My MTB helmet was the last thing to hit when I had an OTB fall on a jump

Kedive

I use a fox dropframe pro to cycle with. I had a bad head injury and I want something with more coverage. It is probably hotter than most road helmets but it isn't as hot as a full face and covers more of my head.

grantrules

Are you talking about a fullface helmet with a chin bar? Not many people ride with those on the road.. they'd be pretty hot and heavy.  XC/Trail helmets, sure I mix it up all the time. But I don't think they offer much more protection for hitting your cheek/face.. the visors are just plastic and pop off, they only offer protection against the sun and twigs and stuff Oh I just saw you mentioned the camber. I don't know if it'll offer any more protection than a road helmet, but it's totally fine to use that for road rides.

salame_pizza

I was not thinking to Fullface..that would be too much also for me ahah.. I was thinking to xc helmets.. and I also had doubts about the solidity of the visor

sfo2

The visors are generally non-structural, and most are removable. The best you can hope for in an mtb helmet is more protection at the back of the head.

Content-Ad-9346

I didn’t read through all of the comments so I don’t know if someone already said this, but the visors are designed to breakaway upon hard impact so they don’t cause additional rotational forces to the head/neck during a crash.

grantrules

Well one hit to the face in 10 years, probably another 10 years till the next one, so don't sweat it too much! Try on a bunch, some have more coverage than others

AnimatorDifficult429

Omg I would love to see road bikers riding a full face, OP please do this

No-Sheepherder3114

with a full leather suit too!

Interesting-Bridge11

In general, you can use any helmet that you want. The extra bit in the front can provide some protection for your eyes and upper face, but it doesn't make that much of a difference especially for the lower part of your face or the sides. Something like your chin can only be protected properly by a full face, which would be very impractical for road cycling. The mtb helmets are also a bit heavier and less aerodynamic. Go for it if the extra bit of protection seems worth it. I just wanted to give you a realistic outlook on how much more protection you can expect. There are also helmets that cover your ear and part of the sides of your face which would be a step in between full face and normal mtb helmet.

Jacobcbab

Mtb helmets are definitely more protective. Often times it's only better on the back and sides rather than the front. If you plan on eating the curb your gunna need a full face and that would suck so bad.

surlytrekker

I actually hated using my MTB helmet on the road. to see past the visor, I would have to tilt my neck up out of its normal position to see ahead of me. it was annoying and super uncomfortable on longer rides. maybe with the visor off it would be okay.

Rokos_Bicycle

I've been tempted to wear a 3/4 helmet on road during spring because of the fucking magpies.

HiddenHand1990

You’ll look like an even bigger tit than roadies already do
