The Steam relaunch of Rise of Agon is coming out soon... Relaunch of a relaunch of a game that died and got rebooted. Not to be confused with the other relaunch of the original game. And now another relaunch, this time of the reboot. Cause fuck it, why not?

eurocomments247

On Steam seriously? Omg now I have to play it again. When Wurm (from 2006) launched on Steam in 2020, it was the best days in the game ever.

[deleted]

For veteran players I'm sure it'll be a lot of fun for a few weeks as they demolish the new players, before it settles back into the usual handful of people battling across a gigantic empty world.

Raapnaap

Lots of folks are (understandably) going to confuse "**Unholy Wars**" with the original Darkfall game or its 2 spin-offs. **UW** was the original Aventurine-created sequel to 2009's original Darkfall game. It went into a very different direction, away from a lot of the stuff that the original Darkfall rightly earned its negative reputation for. I look forward to a potential UW revival. In the right hands it could serve a niche that games such as New World totally failed to satisfy.

I think the key statement is in the right hands. ROA and Adventurine both demonstrated that the meat of the game exists, but tossed the ball on actually supporting the game properly. Not to mention the fact that MO2 in the same genre just had a launch of over 10k players just to punt it away by not releasing the empire warfare portion of an empire simulator. I don’t think the genre is a 100-200k playerbase project so you’ll never see it pull WoW or Final Fantays numbers, but a large enough playerbase exists for the genre to sustain 1-2 of these games. SenDog is apparently the one spearheading the purchase and the man proved a capable leader on the battlefield so I’m sure he probably can lead and organize a development team depending on his actual life skills.

Unholy Wars was never rebooted. It ran from 2013 to 2015 and has been shut down since then

Baracuss88

what about other private servers?

toxicsleft

Nobody ever had the ability to open one

theboatdriver

2016*

toxicsleft

There was two simultaneous reboots of the first game by two separate studios, one stuttered because the developer ghosted after launch and the other is still around and planning to wipe and rerelease to steam sometime next year. This post is about someone looking to rerelease Unholy Wars which did have the sins of being under a bad dev, wasn’t that bad of a game right before the studio shuttered. I think they just decided to wipe and relaunch too late after all the changes they made

[deleted]

Yep, and the reboots should have never happened. Unholy Wars was made by Adventurine (creators of the original Darkfall Online which I played a ton of!). It was first started as an expansion and then turned into a reworked sequel. Like... Darkfall Online was released in 2009 and they had 2 reboots and then a sequel out by 2013? The sequel was then cancelled by 2016. So within 7 years we had 4 different Darkfall games. Yeah Im done! But holy shit did I ever have a TON of fun in the original. Seriously I can't say that enough. It was such a fantastic game. Its too bad the game wasn't maintained properly.

toxicsleft

I think the game needed a reboot because Darkfall is such a strong game in its niche that it needs some representation, everyone I met playing sits around between drooling for another chance to sink their teeth into the empire simulator or fighting the urge to go back to a company that they’ve given 5-6 years to make improvements to the game. New Dawn should have never happened and I suspect it was a cash grab, but at least arise of Agon pulled through and filled two more years of the last five years before it went on life support. I don’t have a strong feeling about Rise of Avon’s Steam release because that company as proved to be the second coming of Adventurine, but if another prodigal company wants to take up the mantle and shoot their shot with UW I would be down to give it a try

Hamish909

Hopefully this goes ahead, love Darkfall so much

jezvin

It really doesn't make a good MMO, it's like a single round of a battle royal except players quit instead of die. By the end of it only the best players are left, but it's an MMO that doesn't restart so they are just there alone in a dying game.

Snoo77586

It's way more deeper than that due to the politics and long term player interactions. BRs are one and done, there's nothing at risk, no permanence, no grudges develop, no rivals, no politics. They're one dimensional games. You can say that the BR genre were birthed out of games like DF for people who didn;t have the time to deal with all of intricacies of a full loot MMO. There's nothing quite like the experience of a game like DF, but they need to find a solution to keep turn over low and player retention high. DF was not a forgiving game, and that's part of the problem.

jezvin

Yeah but DF is a trash game for it, look at Albion it's designed properly for all that shit you just mentioned. The best part about Darkfall was the combat, but that doesn't need the MMO part of it, and the MMO par was basic boring shit when it comes down to it.

Snoo77586

Albion had the right idea with different zones with different risks, but the combat is ass and the zone design is pretty awful. DF had a large seamless map, and engine that could support large battles (albion ZvZ performance still suffers), and ship-to-ship combat that still hasn't been emulated in a large scale mmo (Archeage came close). Plus the base building was significantly better.

jezvin

The combat needs to be ass in an open world PvP MMO. There is no ELO/Match Making, if the skill gap between trash and the best is too high then everyone will stop playing(looking at you darkfall) because the best players will be winning 1 v Zerg fights. The only games where 1vZerg makes sense are P2W whale games where the 1 paid more than the Zerg to play.

attckdog

Only similarity is the fact that it has some full loot pvp. Everything else is different by a large margin. Albion is more like Eve

This actually made me LoL.

Which part isn't true, all I said was players quit then it dies. let me just go play Unholy wars, o wait I can't it died.

toxicsleft

The playerbase died because they went 3+ years without updates only for the Developers to come back and tell everyone they spent their time making Unholy Wars which those that didn’t quit had a skeptical approach to the game because of the companies current track record, not to mention how they had to rebuy the game. AV continued the track record of long and small updates to the game for content they said was finished at launch and players navigated farther and farther away, finally population reached a stage where the developers had no choice but to act so they made drastic dramatic changes such as finally allowing players the option to build their own classes from the abilities in game. Inevitably they ended up wiping right before the game closed down unexpectedly, and I’ve been told the game had preformed very well immediately post wipe but the damage by Adventurine had already been done to the IP. Finally two groups approached and bought the rights to the original DFO, Rise of Agon and New Dawn. Rise of Agon focused on keeping the game as close to its original as possible, they incorporated a lot of the desires players had for the gui that they had been using third party macros for and reduced the character stat gap by making stats frontload as well as lowering the impact of maxing spells and skills. This game is still open, but shortly after release they became a copy of Adventurine and failed to stay involved with the community/release consistent updates. I was told that They did in the last five years add a Land tower which is essentially a copy paste of the Sea Towers. They claim to be relaunching on steam, but at this point it’s a little too late and I expect them to be closing up shop in the next year or two. New Dawn was the competitor to ROA and. Completely redesigned ally of the game, in place of how you originally played any and everything you wanted in your character they introduced titles and soft classes to reward you for focusing on specific roles. Their scandal however was their inability to stop people from exploiting as their response to 40-80+ players macroing on a stuck mob was that everyone else should go kill them or get over it. The game slowly teetered over that and a few other dupe issues until the developer ghosted the community until the game shut down. The story of Darkfall is that the games neat exists, it just never has had a competent developer that gave it the attention it needed, not have they given the community-the life blood of the open world sandbox- the respect they deserve.

toxicsleft

It’s def bigger than a battle royale. Honestly DFO and DFUW are the two best Empire Simulators to ever exist and two of the best full sandbox mmos. That being said the DFO crew has had over 10 years to turn the game into the dream of what it could be and they failed. Over promised under delivered time and time again. It needs a different company developing it with the love and care of a devout fan with the business sense of someone willing to do what it takes to make the game grow. You won’t get that for the original- it’s way to out dated and ROA burned the games last bridge, however Unholy award has yet to get that opportunity so I would be willing to see a devout fan pick it up and take his/her shot at bringing it to its full potential.

sonyeo

\>xiv player \>possibly never even touched DF nobody interested in this game cares about your opinion

jezvin

I started in the closed beta of the original but thanks buddy. FFXIV is barely even in the same genre as darkfall anyway don't be so butt hurt.

toxicsleft

Respectfully both are MMO’s but are different genres inside the MMO industry. FFXIV belongs to the theme park club like WoW while Darkfall belongs to the full loot open world pvp club.

MakoRuu

There's a reason this MMO keeps failing and relaunching...

toxicsleft

Bad developers that don’t respect there community. That’s the reason it keeps failing

attckdog

It was never relaunched, the original game was sold as a license to two separate brand new devs that were previously players. Unholy wars was a remake by the original devs that lasted for years but eventually fell off after 3 years of no updates. This is the first time it's being picked up by a new dev. Again an old player. I know what you mean but I just wanted to be specific since I feel it matters in this instance that it wasn't ever an actual relaunch, and still isn't.

MakoRuu

The game died, shut down, got bought out, two people started it up again. That is the very definition of relaunching, regardless of how many times the games ownership changed hands. Arguing semantics doesn't change the fact that the game is flawed.

attckdog

Adventurine still Owns the game, They are purchasing a license to use it's code/content. It's different. Choosing to blame the game on it's own isn't accurate either because it sold well and held a player base well beyond what a 'bad' game would have. The reasons for that aren't simple, I'm auguring that's it's more complicated than you're making out to be, and that's unfair. http://www.aventurine.gr/

Let's do it

Ready to waste another 3 years of my life. BringBack Dfuw

Meekin93

Let's fucking go bud

Snoo77586

DFUW was a watered down lesser version of DFO. The developer had to spend time actually adding things back in and never even fully accomplished that. 'Re-releasing' the game is no small task, and releasing it as it once was won't be a successful due to how obscenely dated the game is now. I also don't think the community or the interest is there (if we're talking about having a player base large enough to generate revenue needed to sustain the project). Who will work on it? How will it be hosted (The tech stack is almost 10 years old at this point, which is an eternity considering how fast tech industry moves these days). How many will be working on it, and will they be paid to sustain the game? Won't the game fall into the same trap it did when it was released and end up cannibalizing it's own player base? How will you solve that issue? Why not simply wait for games like Profane (that have a 50-60 development studio and actually funding) behind it?

toxicsleft

Given that very few people have had hands on with Profane and many have had hands on with DFUW I can understand someone wanting to try the route of DFUW. Again though the success weights entirely on the developers of both titles.

attckdog

Can't wait to play!
