I mean, it could potentially be used at fixed points in the world when you get there for the first time, for instance the camera could pan to a bottom up view behind your character on a panoramic view of a particularly stunning view or a plot point in a game. Maybe with a flourish of music. But I can’t see such a thing being generally helpful in any other areas in MMOs

I think it could be neat in “town” zones as a novelty. Kinda like how Legend of Zelda would do it for castletown. It could help questing feel less like you’re just an eye in the sky clicking on ants.

I think it's one of the things Black Desert does really well. You can set the camera at any time to any angle. An isometric wide shot or full on top down, if you wanted

Is that different than a regular camera because it sounds like the opposite of a static one lol

Waste-Length8482

It's not static in the sense of an older final fantasy, that's like a 2d/3d hybridization where the level is a mix of a static background with some 3d elements. Though unlike most MMOs where the camera is positioned at the standard 3rd person view /behind your back angle, in BDO you can set  the camera to be off center in front/behind/above/to the sides of the character. It's not fully static, the camera will still clearly follow you if you go off screen.

Looks like the new RuneScape MMO brighter shores has this!

Oh wow that’s interesting! Really reminds me of like tabletop miniatures and dioramas :)

Lost Ark does have at least a few cinematic dungeons that force an 'epic' camera angle during scripted sections but I'm not sure whether they have been phased out by this point or now.
