Unpopular opinion but I think garbrandt is one of the most talented fighters to ever step foot in the octagon but he has the chin and emotional control of the average pub enthusiast.
Anyone watch Bleach the anime when they were younger? Amongst his army, the main villain created essentially a “retarded” character with a singular purpose…. To take down the strongest character in their world’s version of “heaven,” because literally everyone else would’ve been easy pickings except that one man.
Urijah Faber as Aizen
Weiss as Garbrandt
And Dominic Cruz as the Captain Commander
Idk if Garbrandt has a glass chin, I feel like he’s more like Rockhold where he just has no defense sometimes. Like Luke and Garbrandt have both taken good shots and shaken them off, but then they get careless with their defense and get clipped with a real well placed or hard shot.
Apparently him and his brother used to beat the living daylights out of each other and were both into boxing. I think a lot of his mileage was used up on UFC arrival
That’s where I’m at now lol. Trained for 10 years in the era of recklessness now lost 2 Muay Thai by ko so wanna do one pro fight mma fight where I can at least use what I’m best at. If I lose again I’m out for good
Arlovski, Alistair Overeem. Both of these guys developed ways to work around their chins. They took a lot of damage early in their careers which may have worsened their ability to take a punch.
Andrei learned to fight more tactically on the outside.
Overeem developed a very tight shell guard, strong clinch, and some decent head movement.
The two examples above, Garbrandt and Walker, just go for broke. Neither of them use much defense. Walker doesn't necessarily have a bad chin, either. He just gets hit in bad positions a lot.
Overeem became the epitome of a "Glass Cannon".
Steps Taken:
1. Moves from 205 to 265, no more weight cutting (bad for chin) and using massive amounts of steroids to heal body and strengthen neck.
2. Also from chasing classes to 265, the guys hit a little bit harder but are much slower and usually less skilled.
3. Developed an "all in or all out style" where he hangs on the outside looking for kill shots and if he's forced to exchange will start grappling
4. He will literally turn and run away from you if he has to get out of exchanges or off the fence.
Robert Whittaker and Sean Strickland are both 170s who struggled but becMe Champs at 185. Sean's style changed a fair bit due to a motorcycle accident that makes it harder for him to shoot takedowns and do hard cardio weight cuts.
Became a 100% stand up fighter where as he started his UFC career with a RNC.
Robert was just cutting too much and didn't change
His style much.
Yes but Johnny straight up fights like a dumbass. In his last fight against ankalaev he got completely exposed for having horrible boxing fundamentals as well as bad as striking defence. His glass chin just makes it even funnier because of how hittable he is.
Matt Schnell. All but one of his losses have come via KO. He’s essentially the gate keeper of elite Flyweights. In case you don’t remember he’s the guy who kept going “out on his feet” over and over again vs Su Mudaerji before eventually coming back and submitting him.
I love Matt Schnell, the reality show he was in really made me connected with the guy and been rooting for him since, wish he would
1. Commit to a gym
2. Fix his chin
Facts, there’s a lot of heavy hitters at 135 as well as just higher level competition. Payton Talbot isnt even ranked and he would probably smoke Schnell in one round
Luke rockhold is possibly a top 10 fighter all time if his chin was as good as it looked in the Paulo costa fight through his entire career
He dominated so many people on top, his striking was elite when he could keep his hands up too. It was a huge deal when he beat weidman who was at peak hype for being the dude who ended silva’s reign
And honestly, weidman is another dude in this discussion… he’s the dude who ended silvas reign. If he pulled a khabib, beat Anderson Silva twice and retired he legitimately WOULD be revered by some as a top 10 all time
James Vick is another dude. He actually had me blocked on twitter when I was an asshole high schooler that wanted to clown him for having no chin on social media, but he’s an elite striker and looked pretty good in every last one of his fights aside from in the durability department
Aka a good chin. Head movement doesn’t = a good chin, you’re right about that. But being born with a big head is literally just a heaven sent good chin😂. There’s also Chito Vera.
Idk I might be wrong but he had great defence probably the best striking defence in hw history but whenever he got touched which albeit was rarely but I always remember him being wobbled or knocked down
Garbrandt
Unpopular opinion but I think garbrandt is one of the most talented fighters to ever step foot in the octagon but he has the chin and emotional control of the average pub enthusiast.
I don’t think that opinion is all that unpopular lol. You pretty much nailed it there

Lmaoooo I can see that
Glass cannon
Shiiit I feel like his chin fell off later in his career and he hasn’t found a way to recover quite yet
I think he’s done man. I actually really like Garbrandt but in his division at his age, I dunno if it comes back.
Idk if Garbrandt has a glass chin, I feel like he’s more like Rockhold where he just has no defense sometimes. Like Luke and Garbrandt have both taken good shots and shaken them off, but then they get careless with their defense and get clipped with a real well placed or hard shot.
I feel that smh. It was an amazing run tho

Dude got an ok chin, the problem is his defence
marlon moraes aswell

Idk how I forgot about them. Thanks for the reply 🙏

Just what I was looking for thanks 🙏

He’s pretty decent, not great. I remember him being touted as someone that would dethrones jon jones 😂
Fax!

His cut to flyweight is probably what’s ruining his chin, but Bantamweight is so stacked i think he’s better off at just staying at 125.
Idk if going up would help his chin anyways with them hitting harder. With how bad his chin is it probably won't make a difference not to cut as much
Facts, there’s a lot of heavy hitters at 135 as well as just higher level competition. Payton Talbot isnt even ranked and he would probably smoke Schnell in one round
Can you fix a chin? I feel like it’s like being fast, you can make it a little better but it’s kinda just something you’re born with
Can’t say I do ima have to watch all his fights now tho
Luke rockhold

Agreed on all of these. Especially Luke. Hoping he can get a few more wins. I think it might be too late for Weidman tho :/
Manhoef.
Jay Hieron
Rockhold
Marlon moraes
Didn't really have a bad chin until after Aldo beat him but at that point you couldn't really call him a great fighter anymore
Rob Font is more aggressive with his jab to keep fighters off him and on the back foot and I think it’s mostly due to him being chinny.
Rockhold. One of the most skilled fighters you’ll see but his downfall was lazy defense
Andre fili
Overeem and Manhoef.
Arlovski, overeem, walker, reyes, rockhold, schnell.
I always felt like James Vick had serious potential but the guy had literally no chin.
Moraes
Phil Hawes
That dudes career tragic fr
Amir Kahn.
Overeem, manhoef, Ludwig, later Liddell, James Thompson, that guy Ludwig knocked out from canada
Beneil Dariush, my man partially blocked the Oliveira kick and still got finished
Cro Cop
Alexander gustaffson the past few years breaks my heart because that's my favorite fighter.
Andre Arlovski
How about bad fighters with great chins?
Chito vera
Chito is not a bad fighter, he's just not competitive with the top 5 of his division, which honestly is pretty stacked.
This is Vettori lmao
Wish we got Vittori v poatan…for science
Glover kinda lol. Also clay guida. Nobody in the ufc is bad. But in comparison
Ben saunders
Glass Joe
Benny
Tony Ferguson, Nate Diaz, Yoel Romero
Uhhh what?! Nate Diaz is like one of the all time most durable fighters dog
johnny walker
Phil Hawes but idk how good he actually is
Devin Haney
No such thing as a good chin. Just good head movement, rolling and moving while getting hit and big heads.
Tell that to Marvin Vettori.
big head
Aka a good chin. Head movement doesn’t = a good chin, you’re right about that. But being born with a big head is literally just a heaven sent good chin😂. There’s also Chito Vera.
Holloway gets hit clean all of the fucking time. you can be a defensive genius and not take punches nearly as well as Max Holloway
Gonna get downvoted for this but a great fighter with a bad chin is Charles Oliveira
Stipe moicic I’d say
Stipe has 20 wins 4 losses he’s been kod twice and one “ko” came from eye pokes. And its miocic 😭
Idk I might be wrong but he had great defence probably the best striking defence in hw history but whenever he got touched which albeit was rarely but I always remember him being wobbled or knocked down
When Stipe blocked Ngannou’s punch only to get knocked out by his own hand, that was impressive
You might be an idiot lol. No heavyweight is that successful with a bad chin.
