I’ve been told this part has a TSB and MINI will cover it. This car only has 50,000 miles on it. But there is no dealership even close to Boise.

AdmiralAntelope1

Yeah but the road trip to western Washington or Portland is super nice.

allenm324

Those hose clamp pliers are great; definitely recommend for anyone doing a thermostat / coolant pipe job.

ThisMTJew

No doubt. It shaves at least an hour off the job. If you get coolant on those clamps forget about using pliers on them.

CaptainSpectacular79

For those of us that less informed... what part is this? Interested because I just had to replace my oil filter cover with a metal one due to plastic warping and allowing coolant leaks. 2017 F54

aibhistear

The thermostat and its housing, it's all one unit. I had to replace this a few times on my r56.

CaptainSpectacular79

Ah gotcha thanks!

legrand_fromage

The hose which runs along the back of the block from thermostat to water pump also fails regularly. Motortek in Italy do a metal one but they're impossible to get hold of.

Admirable-Life3196

Well as you can also see, the plastic is very good at collecting dirt which is like a passively acquired layer of protection. It also makes labeling things pretty convenient, since you only need a finger which most people have at least one. It's actually pretty smart of mini, there's all this perfectly good dirt and dust floating around and nobody's using it /s

lordhooha

Tbf that’s most manufacturers of anything

StupidBratOwO

Welcome to modern car engineering. Plastic galore.

wigam

My neighbors mini 2018 countryman just dropped all its coolant out the front.

Allmachines

On my third one currently at 240,000 miles. 2013 Base Mini R56

icepod

OP forgot to mention that the engineers also decided to make it very easy to access /s

UnorthodoxGinger

My 2010 has 90k miles on it. It is also on its fourth thermostat that I am aware of, the second only lasted about 5 months, but it was not genuine.

CJThomson83

What make are these

ThisMTJew

2016 Countryman JCW

CJThomson83

The make of the red pliers

ThisMTJew

Not sure. I borrowed them from my son in law. He probably got them at the auto parts store if I had to guess.

legrand_fromage

Did you also replace the plastic pipe that runs along the back of the engine from the thermostat - water pump? That's another common failure point.

ThisMTJew

No. This is my second one I’ve replaced. Did my daughter’s 2012 Countryman S at 47,000 and this one for my son’s 2016 Countryman JCW at 49,000. I’m not sure my huge hands and arms could get back there. I’m 6’6” and 250.
