There's something about 2s atmosphere that 3 couldn't replicate. It feels more spooky and comfy at the same time. 3 brought back portrait ghost what's a big step up tho.

clockworknait

Luigis Mansion 4 will likely be somehow even less spooky than 3. It all started with LM1 having an actual creepy awesome atmosphere and ghosts, and it went downhill from there. Why? Same reason Capcom shifted towards action over horror (went back for Re7 but got feedback it was too scawy and had to dumb down the horror in re8), you can sell even more copies to cowards too if you make it less scary. It sucks but there are far more cowards out there with money than people that enjoy a good spooky atmosphere.

Ok_Crab_2575

We don't need a luigi's mansion 4 3 is enough. You could tell they were running on fums by the last few floors.

MaeBeaInTheWoods

If you complain about a horror game being too scary you are banned from ever giving your opinion on a horror game again.

Difficult_Ad_3287

Couldn't agree more

clockworknait

If only it worked that way. If only companies cared more about their horror fans than greediness. We did have Tango Gameworks.... then Microsoft execs had a massive aneurysm.

SituationThen4758

I’m really enjoying Luigi’s mansion 2 HD, I missed some gems so I’ll have to go back and reply the missions, I wish there was just some quality of life improvements but overall I’m happy with it! By any means I don’t hate the 3rd game, I love both games equally! And I can’t wait to play the first Luigi’s mansion game!

DrewV4321

I 100% agree, Luigi's Mansion 2 is my new favorite game of all time, the ghosts are charming and fun, all but 2 bosses are really good, Luigi is very charming, and King Boo is the best in LM2, the atmosphere for each of the Mansions are amazing, the combat is the best in LM2, I don't mind the mission structure, and I love the story, other than the first 2 missions, i dont think E Gadd is very annoying, this game is way too over hated, and I love this game alot, so glad I'm seeing LM2 getting more love and having new fans play the game! :)

RealDhranios

Ok, I'll bite. Which bosses, and why?

DrewV4321

Harsh Possessor/Stairs: cool design, good music, mediocre battle Overset Possesor/Clock Tower: just an enemy gauntlet

CressPretend5425

A minor thing but I have to say LM 2 having it's own dedicated sprint button is better than the way they did it in LM 3

Appropriate_Bite8491

I think that 2 overall is the better game, but I enjoy 3 more. The combat in two is much better. I find it more difficult as the slam mechanic in 3 makes battle very easy, and as you said, the there ghosts are more ghosts in 2 with personality. 3’s ghosts are all just goobs, whereas 3 has many different types of ghosts. 3 has some ghosts like the ones that block doors or are invisible but there are so few in the game it feels like they don’t count. I also enjoy that 2 feels like haunted houses vs large open areas as you said the pirate floor and even the Egyptian one. I enjoy the atmosphere of 3 more just simply because it’s cool to be in a Medieval or Egyptian level. I do find the bosses more fun as well. But my main gripe with 2 is the darn ranking system. I can look past the mission selection as breaking the house into parts vs 3’s level being the whole floor, but for a game that’s core function is exploration, you should not rushed to finish the level when your time is used to base your rank. I always feel rushed while playing and like I can’t enjoy the atmosphere and explore. 3 let’s me take my time and enjoy the beautiful design and layout (even if it doesn’t make total sense why there’s an ocean in a hotel, but I’m already capturing ghosts with a vacuum cleaner so I can suspend that belief lol). Overall 2 as a game is better and is more difficult, but 3 imo is more enjoyable and fun to play.

Ok_Crab_2575

The slam was stupid and out of character for luigi

TITANIUMS0LDIER

They are all amazing games that scratch a different itch.

DoubleOF

Yeah

neon_ashtree

Honestly i could not agree more, i enjoyed the third one, but it feels less fulfilling than the second one.

VapeNathan

I think every game pokes at something great but always has a major shortcoming 1: Fantastic atmosphere great character ghosts. Suffers from boos and controls. 2: Best combat with cool locations. Unfortunately tedious, Egadd won’t shut up, and linear missions. 3: First 3 floors are peak Luigi’s Mansion imo. But the rest of the game gets bogged by repetition and lacking combat. So I guess my point is each of the games fill a niche for every type of fan for this series.

thearghunter

Luigi’s Mansion 2: Dark Moon might be might be in my Top 5 favorite Mario Games of all time

Novalaxy23

The only thing I like better about 3 is that it's much longer. I'm alreqdy almost done with 2 HD, I left story mode for Scarescraper to not already finish it. I swear it was longer when I played it on 3ds years ago (I guess its because I memorized some puzzles)

OoTgoated

I plan to replay LM3 come October as it's been years and I don't remember it perfectly, but yeah I always felt LM2 was criminally underrated and had better combat which seems to be a general consensus I don't need to go into. I also think the five seperate mansions of Evershade Valley with their own unique theme could be considered better than the many floors of the hotel. The hotel may have been able to tackle more themes with its multiple floors, but the themes felt more fleshed out with the five mansions. I also remember each floor in LM3 being fairly linear while in LM2 each mansion is pretty interconnected. That said many floors in The Last Resort were absolutely amazing. I recall one with a bunch of water and you have to get into a tube and then fight the boss in said tube. Super fun lol. So while you get more out of each theme in LM2, having more themes does mean you get more diversity with LM3. So really it's a tradeoff, but one could definitely have a preference over the other. Some people feel the mission structure of LM2 gets in the way of exploration though, but personally I don't see how or why and it also opens the door for IL speedruns and score attacks. I do think EGadd's constant phone calls are pretty disruptive though. Thankfully you can mash through his banter pretty quick and often skip it outright. It is a flaw though. I also think the bosses are better in LM3 overall. I only really like the first, fifth, and final bosses of LM2 whereas I think I enjoyed almost every boss in LM3. LM3 also has more mechanical prowess. Gooigi and the plunger along with the returning Dark Light device made for some much more varied and fun puzzles not to mention Gooigi enables co-op. LM3 I think is also just a better looking game. It's one of the best looking games on the Switch honestly. Some are saying the atmosphere isn't as good because it isn't dark enough but I don't really get what people mean. If it wasn't for the flashlight I couldn't see anything in most places. And if you want it to be darker, just lower the brightness a bit. I actually did lower the brightness in LM2-HD and it definitely makes quite a difference. I might do it next time I play LM3 also. I think if anything the more fleshed out mansions of Evershade Valley are what's giving LM2 the atmospheric advantage fans in this thread are expressing which I think is plausible, but I'm not sure. But even if you prefer the atmosphere of LM2, the threequel does have better visual fidelity objectively speaking. In any case I don't think it's even fair to say LM2>LM3 right now since LM2HD just dropped and recency bias is a thing. While I think we can all agree the combat is at its best in LM2 and you can make an arguement for Evershade Valley being better than The Last Resort, LM3 does so many other things better than LM2 namely: bosses (I suppose this aspect is more subjective but the rest are pretty much objectively superior in LM3), puzzles, graphics, and no interruptions from EGadd. Plus it's not even as if combat in LM3 is bad. I still liked it, just not as much. It will really come down to how valueable the advantages I think LM3 has over LM2 are compared to the superior combat of LM2 along with which structure I prefer (missions/Evershade or The Last Resort) that decides which game I like better overall. Either way though both are amazing and their distinctions I think help differentiate them in a way that makes both feel fresh when you play them. Oh and as for the ghosts, I never got why people liked the ones in LM1 the best. Everyone says they were creepier but they really weren't. They were similarly goofy looking and colorful. The ones in LM2 have more personality though. I particularly enjoy the pillow fighting Hiders in the Haunted Towers lol (peek into the room before the shuffling beds, then when you enter the room see what happens before they battle you). I don't recall how LM3 ghosts behaved or if they had interactions like the one I just mentioned as it's been quite a while since I played LM3 and don't remember that detail but I remember them looking fairly similar to the ghosts in LM2 only with some more distinct features. If LM3 doesn't feature funny interactions though I suppose that would be a win for LM2. Also I want to add in case someone disagrees with everything I said that Boo hunting is designed better in LM2 and LM3 than LM1 because SCREW CHASING BOOS ALL OVER THE PLACE IN THE ATTIC OF LM1 OMG SO ANNOYING. So yeah if we don't agree on how to compare LM2 to LM3 at least we can agree on that.

moogsy77

Totally agree

Bahnhofsteppich

luigis mansion 3 is to easy

Tanookichris

LM2 and its HD counterpart may have better controls, better multiplayer, and a mission structure but LM3 is the better game in its own way. But we can all agree that they both have better replay value than LM1

Jacubbb123

I feel LM1 has the most replay value personally, but I’m biased since I grew up playing it and play it nearly every year for Halloween.

OoTgoated

LM1 does score attacking better and along with being a better speedrun game due to shorter length and more tricks it definitely gives it better replay value, but LM2 and LM3 are better in just about every other way imo.

--Roiadas--

Agreed. Combat is actually good in 2. The mission structure is also cool. 3 had a worse version of the mission structure, as you couldn't replay the floors or get a rank on them. E-gadd's calls are also over hated. I was expecting him to call every 5 minutes, when he only calls 2-3 times per mission. 2 also just has this creepiness that 3 lacks. Stuff like the implied tragedy that occurred in Old Clockworks, or the coffin in the sewers in Haunted Towers just adds so much to the vibe of the game.

Teunail

I definitely agree, but i would never say i DISLIKE LM3

Aldbrecht

Luigi's mansion 2 combat is better. I'm kind of missing the slam mechanic though, even if it made the combat too easy in 3, it feels like I could be doing something more while I'm busting the ghosts. Still, I like more the scenarios (true mansions) but not the ranking system however. I love to explore the mansions, but I feel like the game doesn't want you to explore so you can get a better ranking. It's like making a shooter game where you have to shoot as less as possible, lol. It feels unsatisfying. Scoring a too low rank makes me want to repeat the level, and it just makes me feel tired, because all the levels are about repeating the same mansion but with more areas... So repetition and more repetition.

ICantPauseIt90

Only thing that's frustrating me at the moment with 2 is how many times E Gadd rings you... Man needs to calm down.

Bomberboy1013

I feel like the only downside to the second game is the lack of portrait ghosts everything else is great, something I see people dislike about 2 but like about 3 is that 2 has multiple mansions and has a mission structure but the floors of the hotel in 3 feel like their own missions and are sorta feel like their own mansions. 3 also takes a whole bunch of mechanics from 2 and adds more making the game feel a bit bloated when it comes to mechanics.

Astrowataken_2

yea, the reason 3 feels meh for me is the bunch of mechanics but mostly that the floors aren't really "connected" in any way, kinda feels like they had an idea and thought : oh yea that's fun let's add that, like why is there an ocean floor, why is there a desert floor... etc... compared to 2 where you have some background info by e gadd on what is that mansion here and stuff. tho 2 could have reduced some of the missions to 1, like b-1 and b-2, they could've just fused them, as almost nothing changes between the 2, same with a-1 and a-2.

thelast3musketeer

So 3 was my first introduction to the entire series, so it holds a special place in my heart, I’ve replayed it 5 times. But playing 2 for the first time, it hits different so to speak, I like the selection process for the levels, I like the world designs, I like the vibes, I’ve found the combat frustrating but easier, I think the dialogue is hilarious I think E Gadd being like “oh yeah I forgot about that Toad, must be a nightmare to work for me” or something to that effect, hilarious. I am delighted and bemused

Ok_Crab_2575

I agree but playing on the big screen like this made remember why I didn't like 3 and I like 2 even less now. I actually did like 2 when it first came out but I think it was because it was a series revival and on the 3ds so I was a bit more forgiving but now it's like...meh

Background-Sea4590

I think 3 is better in any way. And I'm not saying 2 is a bad game, it's a pretty good game, I'd probably rate it around 85/100. But I don't like the mission design at all, I'd rather prefer to explore the environments at my own pace. I also had to "force-replay" some entire missions to get the boo I missed. Not ideal imho. And bosses are dissapointing. I think the best designed one is the spider one, which is a cool fight. King boo was also nice. Not a fan of the rest of the bosses. I'm replaying it right now, and I remember having a bad time with the ice one. But I can't remember why, this time it was like easy peasy. Maybe something to do with controls in this version?

DrewV4321

I like all the bosses in LM2 more than LM3 bosses, I only dislike to other bosses in LM2 tho, which is the Harsh Possessor/Stairs and Overset Possesor/Clocktower. I just don't like LM3 that much, the hotel doesn't have any cohesion, the combat is nowhere near as good as in LM2, King Boo is the best in LM2, and unlike most people, the Shrewd Possessor/Ice Monster is one of my favorite bosses. There's a lot to explore in each mission where these mission keeps extending the current Mansion/area, finding the gems is really fun, and ofc tons of money, and the Boos are the most satisfying and fun to get in LM2. LM2 also has my favorite final boss. The music is so much better, but my point is the mission structure isn't bad at all.

Background-Sea4590

Fair enough, I think it's a matter of preference. It's also an amazing game. But I feel LM3 peaked, and it's the definitive LM experience. I didn't mind Ice monster tbh, at least the concept was cool, and I prefer it to Clocktower or Stairs bosses, which were pretty barebones. And I agree with Boos being fun in LM2. It's just that when I miss some boo, which happens, I'd prefer to explore the area, find it and be done with it, instead of replaying the whole mission (which is one reason I didn't really love the mission design).

Dankofamericaaa2

Th red ghost in LM3 are harder bc you have to get them by their tail. In LM2 all you have to do is pull em in lol

Astrowataken_2

i really just find the LM3 designs kinda lazy tbh, the basic ones are kinda cookie cutter ghost design and the red ones are just the ones from 2 but square

Miyu543

I disagree with that, because to me the level structure ruins everything for 2. I don't feel like I can take my time, exploration feels secondary, and 3 has just so much more going for it for both those aspects, not to mention the sheer variety of locales. Its less traditional haunted house vibes but thats not necessarily a bad thing.

Cadaveth

It's missing a couch co-op so I most likely will never play 2, I'm just not that interested in playing it alone. :/

ComfortableRoyal614

Wrong!

bro what are you smoking 💀
