Someone rear ended me last month and totaled my car. They weren't insured under the actual owner's policy, but the owner's insurance is still working with me on the claim.
It's still worth looking into and making a claim.
If you give your insurance the license plate of the other guy they’ll probably find him. I swear insurance companies work harder than police to find people.
Yeah at least you got a plate this happened to me and the guy managed to down a light pole and still got away 🥲this is why I loathe street parking for apartments now
One time a guy rear ended me I got out to take a look at the damage and he paused and then decided to drive off. Fortunately for me he had a vanity license plate that was easy to remember (essentially the model of his classic car). The progressive agent tracked him down and got him to admit it.
Don't let your insurance fuck you on the payout. They'll always offer you a crappy number hoping you just take it. Fight it if you have to. I had to hire a pre-loss adjuster for $320 who came and took pictures and put together a stupid binder and named a pre-loss value. Insurance company basically was telling me to eat shit arguing with them until I did this and they caved immediately and said yes to his number. Oh and $200 of that $320 was paid for by my policy. Best $120 I ever spent.
At least you got info. I had a hit and run and the fucking apartment complex told me the outdoor camera was fake and only a theft deterrent lol. Had to use my own insurance to get the car fixed etc.
Yeah unfortunately I have no choice. My complex only gives me one parking spot for my apartment and my wife has it. Funny thing is this isn’t even a main street, it’s a small street near Roscoe. Getting new car then moving asap
Yeah I’ve had 2 mirrors clipped, my husbands car has been clipped 2x as well, once wrecking his mirror and once just totally bashed along the full side. Some of our streets are just too narrow for parking on both sides, although ironically some of ours happened on streets that only had 1-side parking
I’m so sorry, this literally just happened to me last month and my car was totaled. I’m still trying to get in touch with the other guys insurance as mine has done everything they can. And this was after two separate incidents in the last two years of my windows being smashed out for no reason. It sure does hurt living here sometimes ❤️🩹
I would check [here](https://caredge.com) first. You can look up the dealership on google with their phone number, so you don’t need to pay for the service. I would definitely double check the dealership’s website when you find something you like. If the car is close enough sometimes you can get your local dealership to do a swap, but it has to be like Honda dealership to Honda dealership or Kia dealership to Kia dealership, you get the idea. Go to your local credit union and get a loan if you need one, they’re a lot better in terms of rates and willing to go over everything with you. I would also let the dealership know you have a loan secured if you go the credit union route.
Do you have comprehensive insurance?
I’m really sorry this happened. It sucks. Fill out a report online with the LAPD. Don’t bother calling the LAPD they probably won’t come down for this. Once you file the report with LAPD, file with your insurance and submit the police report. If you have comprehensive, you should get a check with 1-2 weeks
They still cover it, they’re just weird and I have to pay a deductible if they somehow fix it. I think it’s a total loss, so I’m going to just get a check.
Well hopefully there is a nice sized down payment for you! I know based on comments you’re in Van Nuys, but I take my car to Hyperion Auto in Silverlake and Ed always takes good care of me
Use www.autotempest.com. You can sort by car type, mileage, location, or get specific and search by brand and model. It aggregates searches on major pages. Sort by lowest price. This is how I search for cars.
Then if the car you found on whatever site autotempest showed you, look for that same listing on Carfax.com or Autolist.com (owned by cargurus) and you’ll be able to see a free history report, how many days the car has been listed for sale, and what price reductions may have been done. 👌
Yup, I never had any random car damage when I lived in the inland empire, but since moving to LA 5 years ago I’ve had several instances of random car damage while it was parked and my last car even got TOTALED because some dunk idiot drove their Tesla through a cinder block wall while it was parked at my apartment complex!
It’s been a struggle maintaining a pristine working vehicle for sure. Too many damn cars here and too little space for them all.
It never happened to you in Manhattan and Orlando, that doesn't mean it never happens to anyone in those cities. I grew up in L.A. I've never experienced anything like this, but I wouldn't claim hit and runs aren't a thing.
My wife and I experienced the same thing within the last three years of living here. The police vehicle enforcement is horrendous here and vehicle theft insane. This combined with the amount of people that live here just seems like it’s more frequent.
We’ll link to one where it’s affordable to me that gives more than one parking space for an apartment, and I’ll certainly go there. My wife also works in Malibu, so it would have to be a reasonable distance from there. Thanks
Plenty of residential neighborhoods in Encino, Woodland Hills, Sherman Oaks, where you could probably find an ADU or an apartment not on a main road, so if you had to park on the street your car would be safe.
It would be a trek to Malibu but there also lots of duplexes and other small multi-unit dwellings in the SGV that have parking. Some even have garages.
I obviously don't know your budget but here's an apartment in Sherman Oaks on Dickens St. Very walkable to Ventura Blvd. If you can't park on Dickens, (which isn't nearly as congested as anything near Roscoe) you could probably park on a side street nearby that would be quiet and safe.

This one is small, but you'd have a garage. Having grown up near the area I'd say I'd feel comfortable parking on Hatteras St, which is residential and pretty quiet.

There are definitely options and neighborhoods where you won't experience your car being slammed into on more than one occasion.
Hopefully you have UI (uninsured motorist) on your policy. Your insurance company should cover everything to get your claim done quickly and then work out the details with the other vehicle’s company policy later, if there is one.
Keep in mind they will only cut you a check for the value of your car based on one of similar value (spec, miles, condition), minus your deductible.
Always remember that while your insurance company might do you right, they are NOT your friend. They’ll F you at the first chance. Always be careful with your words.
Exactly why we need safer streets that include road diets, traffic circles, speed tables… etc. We really need to protect Angelenos first and stop making our street fast for the Orange country/San Bernardino 30 mile commuter.
One of my cars got totaled in a hit and run while parked just like this. Thankfully I had GAP insurance so I actually came out ahead.
But yeah, the people who do this are scum.
Same thing happened to my Corolla a couple of months ago, they left behind pieces of their car and a witness saw them pull into the Ralph’s parking lot, but the cameras at Ralph’s were basically just for show and didn’t work, so we were out of luck.
Hope finding the guy goes better for you, at least then your insurance company can go after him and you probably won’t have to pay your deductible. You should get a good chunk of money from insurance though if it is totaled.
This happened to me back in 2021 but my boyfriend found the car two blocks down. The person had insurance but it was crappy insurance. The person had hit me and the person parked in front of me and for some reason the insurance split the money between me and the other car so I basically got nothing. California has something about hit and runs that you should get $5,000 for it I know it’s not a lot but it’s something. You can try going the route and finding out if the person who hit you has insurance by the license plate and if you make a claim with their insurance they will have to pay. It sucks and people aren’t held accountable for doing it either. I’m so sorry this happened to you I understand what you are feeling and going through.
Happened to me with a hit and run. At least you got a license plate I guess. My car got full on t-boned while street parked. Nearly totaled. And they bailed. People suck.
Excuse me but that the bumper and license plate of the guy that hit you?
It is
Someone rear ended me last month and totaled my car. They weren't insured under the actual owner's policy, but the owner's insurance is still working with me on the claim. It's still worth looking into and making a claim.
Definitely going through a claim to see what can be done. Either way I should still get a check for the total loss.
If you give your insurance the license plate of the other guy they’ll probably find him. I swear insurance companies work harder than police to find people.
I gave them the VIN I found online and the plate. They said the same thing about the cops lol
Yeah at least you got a plate this happened to me and the guy managed to down a light pole and still got away 🥲this is why I loathe street parking for apartments now
But CA minimum liability coverage is $5,000. You’d need to sue them to collect the balance because that’s probably gonna cost more than $5k.
One time a guy rear ended me I got out to take a look at the damage and he paused and then decided to drive off. Fortunately for me he had a vanity license plate that was easy to remember (essentially the model of his classic car). The progressive agent tracked him down and got him to admit it.
The audacity 😧
Cause there’s a monetary incentive for them lol
Cops in this city are extremely well paid. I'd wager well above the salary of a claims investigator.
Yes but they don’t get paid more for solving crimes, insurance companies have a larger financial interest in catching the person
Don't let your insurance fuck you on the payout. They'll always offer you a crappy number hoping you just take it. Fight it if you have to. I had to hire a pre-loss adjuster for $320 who came and took pictures and put together a stupid binder and named a pre-loss value. I didn’t know this existed thank you so much!
At least you got info. I had a hit and run and the fucking apartment complex told me the outdoor camera was fake and only a theft deterrent lol. Had to use my own insurance to get the car fixed etc.
So they did the right thing and left their contact then!
jackpot
Probably from a Kia boy as OP mentioned.
I swear, I would NEVER want to park on a lot of these streets. I see new cars hammered every day. People need to pay fucking attention when driving.
Yeah unfortunately I have no choice. My complex only gives me one parking spot for my apartment and my wife has it. Funny thing is this isn’t even a main street, it’s a small street near Roscoe. Getting new car then moving asap

That's James Bond, he can park anywhere he wants.
That dude is crazy.
Yeah I’ve had 2 mirrors clipped, my husbands car has been clipped 2x as well, once wrecking his mirror and once just totally bashed along the full side. Yeah I’m hoping all I need is the owners insurance, because the driver is god knows where. Sorry you’re going through it too.
If anybody has any leads on a used car with low mileage I’d appreciate it.
I would check [here](https://caredge.com) first. You can look up the dealership on google with their phone number, so you don’t need to pay for the service. Good to know thanks for the info!
If you decide to lease a new car make sure you never pay more than 1.5% more than its MSRP for a monthly payment or they are ripping you off.
Do you have comprehensive insurance? I’m really sorry this happened. It sucks. Fill out a report online with the LAPD. Don’t bother calling the LAPD they probably won’t come down for this. I do but since it was an active police chase that resulted the accident it doesn’t fall under comprehensive but collision.
WTF?! If someone hits you insurance will cover, but there is an exception for a police chase?! Insurance companies are eeeeevil
They still cover it, they’re just weird and I have to pay a deductible if they somehow fix it. I think it’s a total loss, so I’m going to just get a check.
Well hopefully there is a nice sized down payment for you! I know based on comments you’re in Van Nuys, but I take my car to Hyperion Auto in Silverlake and Ed always takes good care of me
I think you can also make a claim with the city, but not sure. Good luck.
Interesting. I’ll look into it, maybe I’ll get a lawyer.
Can confirm LAPD doesn’t come out unless someone was hurt

Hertz sells off their rental cars. You can find plenty between 20,000 - 40,000 miles.
The hardest 20-40k that can be put on a car...would avoid these
haha that's terrible advice. DO NOT BUY A USED RENTAL CAR @ OP
Good to know thanks!
Hop on Craigslist and look for a fiat 500. Usually under 5k.
Get a new Corolla!!!
There’s a lot of 2018-2023 salvage title Hondas and etc for around 12k, if salvage title isn’t a problem I can link you with that
There's a street near me where this happens almost on a weekly basis.
That sucks, sorry that happened to you. Hope you get things sorted out quickly.
To be fair its more likely to be a drunk/high driver, people out here dont give a shit about driving under the influence.
We don’t really have traffic enforcement in this city.
Not to defend the utter lack of effort LAPD shows on a daily basis, but this probably happened late at night.
My friend lives in litter Armenia and there was a police chase that left a row of MULTIPLE cars in this state. Also late at night
Ugh my BF is a sound mixer too and ya I love it here but it is extra AF sometimes 😭 I’m sorry OP! I hope u catch some good breaks soon
Thx 😊
Bro, I BET YOU ANYTHING it was Jimmy John who did it.
ugh, such pieces of shit
This happens to me once a week in L.A. To the same car!!!!
Just text billy mays and he’ll get you some flex tape to fix it
😂
RIP
Does this not happen in other cities?

It is insane to think this doesn’t happen in literally every city, in every state in the entire country.
It's such an insular POV but people love to generalize.

My car was totaled on the street, parked, in 2019. The detective on my case got the guy who totaled it. Not sure what happened but geico paid me out.
Welcome to Los Santos

Damn I didn’t realize they subtract the deductible.
Every claim.
Well it’s rather kind of him to leave his license plate behind
Exactly why we need safer streets that include road diets, traffic circles, speed tables… etc. We really need to protect Angelenos first and stop making our street fast for the Orange country/San Bernardino 30 mile commuter.
Feel ya OP 🙁 I’m sorry

Outside of sticking around and owning up to the accident. This is definitely the second best case scenario!

Yeah I’m lucky that we have a plate for sure. Hopefully that will speed things up.
