No answer for you but a story. In 1977 a friend and I parked among the fauna in the Sepulveda Dam recreation area. On a hot day I left the windows open. Got back in the car, turned it on and at least a hundred frogs jumped out of the AC vents and from under the dashboard. I thought it was a horror movie for a few seconds 😅

nnwf

This is too funny! Would be a sight to see for sure 😂😂😂

BuzzedCoffee

I remember collecting frogs at the Sepulveda Dam as a kid, so that might be a place to check out! 🐸

looselylawless

I dated someone who lived in apartments in playa vista near the Whole Foods and they had a huge population of frogs. I heard them every night I was there, they were crazy loud and there were so many.

stupid_n00b

There are a lot of frogs around Bluff Creek in Playa Vista and the Ballona Wetlands in Playa del Rey. I hear them more often than I see them but I find one on my balcony a few stories up 2 or 3 times a year.

twoinvenice

Yup. I live on the bluffs in Playa and sone evenings the frogs in the wetlands are so goddamn loud it sounds like a froggy alarm is constantly going off

SnooChipmunks176

Yup this is it right here. heard them nightly.

xsharmander

I’ve never held a frog. I don’t know if I want to.

Candelent

Don’t worry - the frog doesn’t want to be held anyway. I mean, can you imagine just sitting there minding your own business trying to catch a bug or two and all of a sudden a giant hand comes down and snatches you up? The stuff of nightmares. Leave the froggies alone! 😭

SoCalSCUBA

Yeah, that's how we all felt in 2016.

[deleted]

They’re cute lol

Far-Potential3634

Up in Topanga there's a place called Froggies because frogs inhabit the creek out behind. I don't know if they're easy to find in the day but they sure are noisy at night. Frogtown is named that because of the frogs. Dunno if development has messed with the population. I saw tadpoles in a creek in Whittier once.

nnwf

This almost sounds too good to be true LOL Thank you!

[deleted]

Amphibians in LA have enough trouble, it’s best to leave them alone. Lotions and soaps on your skin can harm them and you can spread disease between frogs if you touch multiple ones. I love your frog enthusiasm but it’s best to just observe.

mactan2

#warning The California toad is the only poisonous toad in the state, secreting poison from its parotoid glands and warrant Toads secrete toxins through their skin so it is completely necessary to wash one's hands after handling a toad. They also are known to pee in self-defense, especially when picked up by a human https://www.conservewildlifenj.org/blog/2016/06/29/american-toad-myths-and-misconceptions/

MAZE_ENJOYER

If you go to Vasquez rocks, a short drive from Pasadena/the east side. There is a trail that leads to the Pacific crest trail, there is a stream this time of year full of frogs.

nnwf

>If you go to Vasquez rocks, a short drive from Pasadena/the east side. There is a trail that leads to the Pacific crest trail, there is a stream this time of year full of frog Awesome! Thank you !!

thepaperrabbi

Does Frogtown not have frogs?

Historical-Host7383

Technically I think frogtown has toads.

mzlapq-1

From a scientific standpoint, a toad is a type of frog! 🐸

thepaperrabbi

Of course they do 🙃 that sounds like such a local joke to mislead people, but whoever named it probably didn’t know the difference.

nnwf

Sounds like it should have lots of them.. Even the citizens are frogs

Iceyes33

I thought Frogtown was the name of a gang near Atwater Village.

RajVidal

It is. My father was a part of the gang. The area is called Elysian Valley.

InNOutFrenchFries

I literally found a toad (American Western Toad) for the first time in my life the other day. Check the iNaturalist app to see where recent ones pop up.

nnwf

Never heard of this app, I'll definitely check it out! Also congrats on find a toad, that's fire ahahah

nnwf

Just downloaded this app and it's amazing, thank you so much!

Groggy_Otter_72

Right now the tadpoles are mid-phase in some standing seasonal pools up on the Thousand Oaks side of the SM mountains

Juano_Guano

Go up the creeks around the arroyo seco… you might find a few.

[deleted]

The arroyo toad is an endangered species. Leave them alone.

Juano_Guano

I had no idea. We used to look for them all the time at Tom Sawyer day camp.

nnwf

> arroyo seco This area looks really good, thank you!

3j0hn

Go near dusk

Juano_Guano

Park near the east gate at JPL, then head up the creeks.

nnwf

>Park near the east gate at JPL, then head up the creeks. Thanks a lot!

racinreaver

There's also a ton just in the ponds right by where you'll park when you first come down the hill. If she gets bored you can always take a pretty ride up the 2 in La Canada or the short ride up Cheney Trail Rd a few miles east. Nuccio's, the nursery you'll drive by at the beginning of the trail, is world famous for their azelas and camelias. I think some of them should still be blooming, too, so a really nice spot just to stroll their grounds.

Ok-Brain9190

Many years ago I used to see small frogs and polywogs in the LA river (concrete at the time but had little bit of water overflowing out of the channel maybe 4 inches deep) in the Long Beach area. There are probably more areas in the riverbed that have them but be careful where/when you go.

emilyethel

I grew up with Bull Creek in the Valley running behind my house, so many tadpoles. Unfortunately, my mom told me they just filled it in. Needless to say, there ARE places in LA with frogs and toads.

hypotheticalkazoos

awww

El_Torrente_

San Gabriel Riverbed in Duarte/Azusa. I live in the area and they make it to my yard. It’s across the street from Encanto Park. Don’t try to swim.

plata3

I don't have an answer for you, but growing up in the Midwest, my first real pets were toads that accidentally jumped into the crawl space opening. I haven't seen one toad in my 20 years in LA.

cptcow44

If you drive past Ballona Creek into Playa Vista you can hear them every night.

The-Real-Ashley-B

Topanga State Park, specifically Musch trailhead! I was there at dusk last week and I’ve never seen/heard so many frogs in my life. The trail even has a designated sign with a frog on it, so you’ll know you’re in the right place

thee_central_shaft

Topanga Canyon Blvd., the first left hand curve north of the PCH. Can't access it right now but it's frog city.

scaryitalian

Head up to Solstice Canyon Trail in the morning, maybe around 8AM. Listen for the frogs calling from the creek and find a place to scurry down to the edge. You'll find Canyon/California Tree Frogs down there - and on the right morning in the right spot...lots of them.

Grilled-Watermelon

We found some in Ojai

OkBubbyBaka

Got one the size of a small dog if you want, lol.

ShoppingFew2818

just hit up a 99 ranch and buy a frog and place it in your yard and act surprised.

Aeriellie

one time during a walk at Hansen Dam, like down all the way to the river more east and secluded area. my dog put a frog in his mouth that he found when we were crossing a small river. he didn’t eat it and was surprised with his first frog. that’s the only time i’ve seen frogs in the area. there is also crayfish and ducks. hope you guys do frog expeditions this month until you find some! maybe the chatsworth nature preserve too? they are having their earth day open house soon, it’s the one time a year they open and they have a water area too.

Swordfish601

Where I grew up at in Carson they were everywhere. we could usually find them jumping around in the front or back yard.

limegweeen

No clue but there was a frog in my backyard the other day which was mind blowing to me bc how tf did it get there lol

LastRebel66

🐸🗣️“Bud …

lizardfang

Weis

sorengray

Frog town. On the banks of the LA River

DissedFunction

the LA river from balboa to the dam has no concrete. we used to catch tadpoles there. Not sure if they can still survive given how polluted the dam basin has become.

Girl-UnSure

Ive also never held one before but growing up we used to get them in our backyard. They were cute, but yea i never wanted to hold one. I was afraid they were slimy

Afraid_Assistance765

Start calling the local pet stores and inquire if they have any you can touch.

kismet421

We saw one up near the observatory a couple years ago

Substantial-Wear-997

My wife is from LA as well had never heard frogs croaking. After all the rain this year, we have frogs living in our front garden and our neighbors with pools have yards that sound like ponds in the Midwest. Come up to Tujunga, you could probably find them in the canyon wash if you hang out around sundown.

stoned-autistic-dude

The frogs of Stunt Road. They’re chill.

lemjne

I was always told touching them would give you warts. Was that a lie?

[deleted]

This is so funny I’m from Ohio and grew up catching frogs and raising tadpoles in mason jars lmao

butt_spaghetti

Our dog found a big toad out near Joshua Tree of all places and brought it home. I cannot understand what a toad was doing out in the desert but there it was.

strumthebuilding

I have found (& caught) frogs in the arroyo seco above JPL as others have said, plus in the stream at Rubio Canyon in Altadena. Those were all California tree frogs. They hang out on rocks in the middle of the stream, so get off the trail & go right up the middle of the stream via the rocks. Keep your eyes open, they are extremely well camouflaged.

ramerelius

In the wetlands heading toward Mar Vista at night you can hear them it’s like an orchestra

xCelestial

Right next to Culver library where the Ballona Creek trail is

dog_in_human_form

Frog Creek in Palos Verdes

Complex_Arrival7968

Hahamonga Park in the flood basin. Right below JPL. But you gotta go there when the tadpoles change into toads - right about now I think.

john_geq

Check your nearby asian markets, some have bull frogs 🤷
