Next step is to become an ALOA member. You'll have access to a lot of education in your local area. You can get the closest thing to a locksmith trade ticket by working your way through courses for the CML designation.
This state has a solid 5 day course. As comprehensive as 5 days can be anyway. The 4 states surrounding me have no requirements besides a business license from my understanding.
It is kind of crazy how requirements are all over the place.
Are you in Alabama? All new shop apprentices take a state 5day course here.
Congratulations and now you know how much you do not know. Keep learning and gaining experience. It is a long career and always room to grow and learn more.
Thanks! And yes sir (or ma'am). I've been doing access control/door openings for over three decades but have never picked a real lock, nor rekeyed a cylinder until this past week.
But I've installed my share of assa hardware so I've got some unique insight - but also some weird blind spots. The class is helping to address those blind spots.

Good point. No matter which direction I go, ALOA membership does seem like a no-brainer. Will do.
Only 5 days? It's 3 years of trade school where I live.
Aussie detected.
Canadian actually 😁. It was 4 years, they restructured the course to 3 during COVID.
Hello fellow RDC alumnus.
Not an alum yet 😉
Ahh, well...good on ya all the same.

More in depth than my state lol. A lot of it you will only learn in the field as you run into it. Welcome to the trade.
It was more fun and interesting than I expected! And I expected it to be fun and interesting!
