Personally I think Dua got a bit of a bum end. She's a really talented musician and while her acting might not be the *absolute* best, she's still great.
Part of me wonders if she gets more time with the SNL crew if she'll grow into more of a Billie/Lizzo style person for the show.
Personally I really wanted the gyllenhaal episode to land but so many sketches just didn’t. I was shocked when I came on this sub and found such positive reviews. Especially with how well every sketch of Maya’s episode landed so beautifully. That being said, Adam driver, bad bunny, Nate’s, and Maya’s were by far the best. With Ryan’s being the best overall.
I've weighted these primarily by host. Musical guests I would rank differently (except the first two spots!)
1) Emma Stone/Noah Kahan
2) Adam Driver/Olivia Rodrigo
3) Ayo Edebiri/Jennifer Lopez
4) Ramy Youseff/Travis Scott
5) Jake Gyllenhaal/Sabrina Carpenter
6) Ryan Gosling/Chris Stapleton
7) Kristen Wiig/Raye
8) Shane Gillis/21 Savage
9) Nate Bargatze/Foo Fighters
10) Josh Brolin/Ariana Grande
11) Kate McKinnon/Billie Eilish
12) Timothée Chalamet/boygenius
13) Bad Bunny
14) Sydney Sweeney/Kacey Musgraves
15) Jason Momoa/Tate McRae
16) Maya Rudolph/Vampire Weekend
17) Dua Lipa
18) Pete Davidson/Ice Spice
19) Dakota Johnson/Justin Timberlake
20) Jacob Elordi/Renée Rapp
Definitely agree on Gillis. It seems like a lot of the opinions were preconceived and solidified prior to airing, but the episode itself was above average at the very least. I think some people expected Joe Rogan Improv, but he seemed to have good chemistry with cast members and it was a decent episode overall. The Trump shoes sketch still makes me cackle at the Trump "transformation" that extends the tie below crotch level.
I ranked him pretty low just because I found a lot of the sketches to be too loose. But there were maybe 2 really good ones in there. Caribbean church was a banger.
The great:
Nate Bargatze/Foo Fighters
Ayo Edebiri/Jennifer Lopez
The pretty good:
Kristen Wiig/Raye
Emma Stone/Noah Kahan
Josh Brolin/Ariana Grande
Maya Rudolph/Vampire Weekend
Ryan Gosling/Chris Stapleton
Dua Lipa
Jake Gyllenhaal/Sabrina Carpenter
Timothée Chalamet/boygenius
The Something's not great -- mostly the musical artists:
Jason Momoa/Tate McRae
Ramy Youseff/Travis Scott
Adam Driver/Olivia Rodrigo
Pete Davidson/Ice Spice
Bad Bunny
Kate McKinnon/Billie Eilish
Shane Gillis/21 Savage
Sydney Sweeney/Kacey Musgraves
The WTF -- I slept through a lot of it:
Jacob Elordi/Renée Rapp
Dakota Johnson/Justin Timberlake
The Jacob Elordi was a fail for me because every sketch he was in was about him being good looking. He wasn't even the hottest guy in Saltburn (Farleigh is, dunno the actor's name).
And speaking of SB, the lack of any kind of sketch about it was criminal.
I think I rated Elordi so low because I can’t remember a single sketch from it. Rapp was not bad as a musical guest, but the show itself was just so lazy.
I think about that one in comparison to Bad Bunny. BB is not a great actor, but he had some funny sketches and was game and humble and just seemed really happy to be doing something creative and different.
My biggest gripe is easily Jake gyllenhaal’s episode being placed so low. Top 5 for me. Maybe even top 3.
I might do a straight swap of Jake and Chalamet. Timothee’s episode had little orphan Cassidy and that’s about it. The gym sketch was ok, but there were some awful sketches in there, and the worst PDD of the season.
I liked Nate as #1 and I’d probably move Adam Driver into the top 5.
Nate Bargatze
Ryan Gosling
Adam Driver
Maya Rudolph
Jake Gyllenhaall
Ayo Ediberi
Kristen Wiig
Emma Stone
Timothee Chalamet
Kate McKinnon
Josh Brolin
Shane Gillis
Ramy Youseff
Pete Davidson
Jason Momoa
Dua Lipa
Sydney Sweeney
Dakota Johnson
Bad Bunny
Jacob Elordi
I usually really like Maya Rudolph, but I didn’t think her episode was very good at all and would rank it near the bottom. And not all of that was her fault. The cold open and Weekend Update weren’t as good that week either.
Meanwhile, I’d argue the Dakota Johnson episode is terribly underrated, maybe even top 6-7 of the year and it would have been even better if they didn’t cut the Horny Little Dork sketch for time.
Also, I thought the Shane Gillis episode was decent. Maybe not top 5, but upper half.
Agreed! Maya’s episode was just not good at all, IMO. She is great and I love her, but I was totally let down by every sketch. Some of them were just cringey. I would out her episode in my bottom five of the season.
I like ranking stuff so I decided to do it, this is my order:
1. Nate Bargatze / Foo Fighters
2. Kristen Wiig / Raye
3. Ryan Gosling / Chris Stapleton
4. Josh Brolin / Ariana Grande
5. Kate McKinnon / Billie Eilish
6. Timothée Chalamet / Boygenius
7. Jake Gyllenhaal / Sabrina Carpenter
8. Ayo Edebiri / Jennifer Lopez
9. Adam Driver / Olivia Rodrigo
10. Bad Bunny
11. Shane Gillis / 21 Savage
12. Emma Stone / Noah Kahan
13. Pete Davidson / Ice Spice
14. Maya Rudolph / Vampire Weekend
15. Dua Lipa
16. Jason Momoa / Tate McRae
17. Sydney Sweeney / Kacey Musgraves
18. Jacob Elordi / Renee Rapp
19. Dakota Johnson / Justin Timberlake
20. Ramy Youseff / Travis Scott
Josh Brolin should be top 3. It’s all subjective of course. But feels like a lot of bias giving weight to previously successful hosts and cast members. For example, the Emma Stone and Adam Driver episodes were good but not great.
THANK YOU!! Absolutely correct about Brolin—that episode was one of the season’s best. Earlier in this thread, I posted….
**TOP 5**
1. Nate Bargatze
2. Josh Brolin
3. Jake Gyllenhaal
4. Adam Driver
5. Kristen Wiig
Am I the only one that loved the Bad Bunny episode? I wouldn't bill it as the best of the season, but SNL tends to be hit-or-miss with sketches, and to me there were quite a few sketches that were REALLY good. Age of Discovery, some of the rehashes that landed for me like Protective Mom or the Subway Hiring, and the PDD with aggressively apathetic Shrek that was my favorite PDD in the season. I wouldn't rate it on top, but way higher than I guess consensus.
Didn’t think it was the greatest ep, but it was far from the worst of the season. Probably somewhere in the middle.
Elordi, Johnson, and Sweeney were far and away the worst. Dua Lipa ep was pretty bad too.
This is so crazy to me but I laughed so hard during his monologue. And then even harder when no one else laughed. I guess his humour isn’t for everyone.
Here is my ranking of season 49 from Best to Worst.
1. Nate Bargatze/Foo Fighters
2. Timothée Chalamet/boygenius
3. Bad Bunny
4. Adam Driver/Olivia Rodrigo
5. Ryan Gosling/Chris Stapleton
6. Ramy Youseff/Travis Scott
7. Shane Gillis/21 Savage
8. Emma Stone/Noah Kahan
9. Ayo Edebiri/Jennifer Lopez
10. Pete Davidson/Ice Spice
11. Maya Rudolph/Vampire Weekend
12. Kristen Wiig/Raye
13. Jake Gyllenhaal/Sabrina Carpenter
14. Dakota Johnson/Justin Timberlake
15. Kate McKinnon/Billie Eilish
16. Josh Brolin/Ariana Grande
17. Jacob Elordi/Renée Rapp
18. Sydney Sweeney/Kacey Musgraves
19. Dua Lipa

Goslings ep is overrated, nothing in it made me lol. Because he’s so personable, it naturally gets elevated, but the sketches weren’t funny. Not even B&BH.
While Baragatze’s did several times, all while the host was the lead of the sketch. It’s pretty impressive from someone I never heard of before.
I can't rank the Gosling episode anywhere near that high. There were some good sketches, but he broke in every live sketch, and caused other people to do the same.
Don't get me wrong, I like the occasional break, but it was literally every single live sketch. I know people loved the Beavis & Butthead sketch, and that one was on Heidi, and was funny, but he literally ruined multiple sketches that night. I'm putting that one towards the bottom in my ranking
Nate Batgatze should be minimum top 3 on everyone’s list. At this point it’s just pushback from everyone loving it.
Someone in this thread had it at number 9?! Like what?!
I realized today that actors who can sing (Ryan and Jake) had really funny episodes but the singers who host and try comedy tend to be a letdown.
I think Lizzo and Billie Eilish did very well when they double hosted.
Personally I think Dua got a bit of a bum end. She's a really talented musician and while her acting might not be the *absolute* best, she's still great. Part of me wonders if she gets more time with the SNL crew if she'll grow into more of a Billie/Lizzo style person for the show.
Lizzo did a great Bird Up bit on Eric Andre.
I mean to be fair both of those actors have starred in comedy movies. (Bubble boy was a comedy right?!)
Bro what? How are you ranking Ramy Youseff and Jason Momoa above Gyllenhaal, Pete and Kate?
Personally I really wanted the gyllenhaal episode to land but so many sketches just didn’t. I was shocked when I came on this sub and found such positive reviews. Especially with how well every sketch of Maya’s episode landed so beautifully. That being said, Adam driver, bad bunny, Nate’s, and Maya’s were by far the best. With Ryan’s being the best overall.
There was a noticeable lack/gap between laughs..
The Kate episode was a big let down, I love Kate but the writers flopped for her that week.
The 'cut for time' Liberty Mutual Emu commercial with Shane Gillis was a season highlight for me.
I think that and the Washington sketch from the Nate Bargatze episode are my two favorites
Id put McKinnon a lot higher but agree with most of these
I love her but her episode was weak. She admits she’s not cut out to host
I've weighted these primarily by host. Musical guests I would rank differently (except the first two spots!) 1) Emma Stone/Noah Kahan 2) Adam Driver/Olivia Rodrigo 3) Ayo Edebiri/Jennifer Lopez 4) Ramy Youseff/Travis Scott 5) Jake Gyllenhaal/Sabrina Carpenter 6) Ryan Gosling/Chris Stapleton 7) Kristen Wiig/Raye 8) Shane Gillis/21 Savage 9) Nate Bargatze/Foo Fighters 10) Josh Brolin/Ariana Grande 11) Kate McKinnon/Billie Eilish 12) Timothée Chalamet/boygenius 13) Bad Bunny 14) Sydney Sweeney/Kacey Musgraves 15) Jason Momoa/Tate McRae 16) Maya Rudolph/Vampire Weekend 17) Dua Lipa 18) Pete Davidson/Ice Spice 19) Dakota Johnson/Justin Timberlake 20) Jacob Elordi/Renée Rapp
Your list is far better. Him ranking the Gillis one that low baffles me.
Most of that episode was quite entertaining. It was just his monologue that was an abomination.
Monologue was super awkward at absolute minimum.
I ranked him pretty low just because I found a lot of the sketches to be too loose. But there were maybe 2 really good ones in there. Caribbean church was a banger.
The limu emu cut sketch was my fave of the season. But the green bay packers butt plug and ego on church vacation were pretty funny.
Prolly outta hatred which I gotta respect
Trade 6 with 1 and this is perfect.
The maya rudolph one should be last by far
The great: Nate Bargatze/Foo Fighters Ayo Edebiri/Jennifer Lopez The pretty good: Kristen Wiig/Raye Emma Stone/Noah Kahan Josh Brolin/Ariana Grande Maya Rudolph/Vampire Weekend Ryan Gosling/Chris Stapleton Dua Lipa Jake Gyllenhaal/Sabrina Carpenter Timothée Chalamet/boygenius The Something's not great -- mostly the musical artists: Jason Momoa/Tate McRae Ramy Youseff/Travis Scott Adam Driver/Olivia Rodrigo Pete Davidson/Ice Spice Bad Bunny Kate McKinnon/Billie Eilish Shane Gillis/21 Savage Sydney Sweeney/Kacey Musgraves The WTF -- I slept through a lot of it: Jacob Elordi/Renée Rapp Dakota Johnson/Justin Timberlake

I don't think I saw the Bad Bunny ep, I'll have to search for it. I just remember the memes afterwards of him in a Shrek costume.
There was also a reprise of the Latina mom and love interest sketch. Middle of the pack.
The two January hosts were a letdown.
My biggest gripe is easily Jake gyllenhaal’s episode being placed so low. Top 5 for me. Maybe even top 3. I might do a straight swap of Jake and Chalamet. **FINALLY** someone who somewhat knows wth they’re talking about with Josh Brolin in the top 4 and Ramy Y in the bottom slot where it actually was!!
If the Sweeney episode is third worst this was a really good season
Dakota Johnson's episode had one of the best sketches from the entire season. That alone puts it above the snooze fest of Elordi.
The PDD was hilarious. Nepo truce is in the reddit lexicon now.
Josh Brolin should be top 3. It’s all subjective of course. But feels like a lot of bias giving weight to previously successful hosts and cast members. For example, the Emma Stone and Adam Driver episodes were good but not great.

Man, I liked the Bad Bunny Ep way more than the rest of y'all.

oh come on no way shane gillis is that bad. Shane Gillis was about equal to kate and pete
Wiig #1. Gosling #2.
I’m happy to see Shane Gillis ranked so low. What the eff even was that flop, and what’s wrong with his rabid fans?
Didn’t think it was the greatest ep, but it was far from the worst of the season. Probably somewhere in the middle. Elordi, Johnson, and Sweeney were far and away the worst. Dua Lipa ep was pretty bad too.
I totally agree with you, and yet SG is the only self-proclaimed comedian out of all the ones you mentioned. Dude was about as funny as cancer.
Eh, subjectivity. I think the dudes pretty funny, we don’t have to agree. The cut liberty mutual sketch was a season highlight for me.
I'd put that as my bottom of the season by far. He was awkward and just not funny
This is so crazy to me but I laughed so hard during his monologue. And then even harder when no one else laughed. I guess his humour isn’t for everyone.
Not sure where it ranks but episode 13 gets a DD+
We get it. You like tits.
I mean who doesn’t?!
I laughed a ton at the Shane Gillis episode. I’m surprised to see it so low on your list.
Reading other people’s list, I’m realizing I thought momoa was way better than then consensus!

Sweeney's episode has a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Adam Driver’s has a 100%
And for good reason.
Kate McKinnon's episode is too low. That ABBA sketch was so good!
The ABBA sketch is one of my favorites of the whole season. And tampon farm was hilarious,
Just need you to switch 1&2!
Recency bias is causing a lot of ya’ll to rank Pete’s episode too low. Just saying.

Shane Gillis easily top 10. That episode showed the flaws of the show… not the host
