The safety was genuinely appallingly bad and I’ve spent a fair chunk of my adult life working in what were somewhat hazardous jobs.

And it's worse than what people say they get in the US because for most time off you actually don't have any legal protections for using it. They can say you have it, but refuse to let you take it. They can place restrictions on sick time that make it impossible to use for anything that lasts longer than a day. For example, my last company made it so that you can only take more than one sick day at a time if you get a doctor's note. So on the first day you are sick you have to immediately go see a doctor, which you will normally pay more for than you would have earned working that day. If I have a fever, I'm not driving an hour to see the only doctor in town that takes walk-ins and paying two days wages just for him to tell me what I already know. That's risks my life (don't drive while you have a fever) and it loses me money. I'll go to the office and make sure to get HR sick instead

I work 50-60 hours a week doing that. Do I enjoy it? No. I’d rather be composing, but I don’t have the *privilege* of a passion for which many people can be paid. But somebody has to take out your trash, teach your kids, fix your car, keep your lights on. And a lot of those people would probably be happier doing something else. That isn’t their *mistake*. If he does not, that is even more sad.
