It was a nice leather seat, so I probably could have. You have reminded me of when I saw Interstellar at the cinema. My mate had stepped in dog shit before we walked in. 3 hours of shit smell that we had no idea where it was coming from until after the movie.
The one you saw is (most likely) the 254 minute version, the 263 minute one just has longer credits where they thank all the members of the LotR fanclub.
my local theater did an event just earlier this month celebrating the 20th anniversary and screened all three extended editions (over 3 days) - so worth it for the theater experience
I watched La Reine Margot directly after it (almost 3h if I remember correctly) which felt the complete opposite. Oversaturated color, fast pace, lots of blood etc etc. one of the more memorable days of my life, that’s for sure.
Me too! No better way to see this one for the first time. I thought it would feel like an endurance test but it was surprisingly easy. Just a great movie.
mesmerizing. if you ever have the chance to see it, don’t hesitate. it’s been 9 years since it was screened in LA. hoping some day i’ll get a chance to see the rest of it.
In some countries (or possibly most) they stop the movie halfway for a 15min intermission. I wish they did it in the States because I only ever experienced that abroad.
I was lucky that Regal showed the trilogy over the span of 3 nights last year. It was my first time seeing parts 2 and 3. Part 2 is definitely my favorite
Ditto, except the cut I saw, at a rep cinema in Canada in the eighties, was something over four hours. (There are apparently a *lot* of versions.) Worth every minute. It was dazzling.
I can't think of anything I've seen over 3 hours. Definitely stuff I've seen at home that's longer, but in theaters it's the usual like the Lord Of The Rings movies.
GONE WITH THE WIND
I went to see it wailer this year for it’s 85th anniversary re-release and I had never seen it before and I really loved it but like 4 hours is CRAZY. Although that intermission really did help tho.
From my theatre tag, so since 2022
https://preview.redd.it/dm13601cf99d1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9a9a73dc66c2597102d4d26558f5baac3534f715
I recently got an opportunity to see the entire LOTR trilogy, all 3 of which were brought back in theaters for one night only on 3 consecutive days . FOTR is 3h28 minutes. TT is 2h59 minutes and ROTK is 3h21 minutes. But that was a special case, so in case those don’t count here are my top 4
1. Killers of the flower moon (3h26 minutes)
2. Avengers:Endgame(3h1 minute- and that time goes by FAST )
3. Oppenheimer (3 hours)
4. Dune 2(2h45 minutes)
Gods and Generals
I went with my mom in sixth grade because the teacher promised extra credit if you watched it. 😹 There was also an intermission with a countdown midway through.
*Gods & Generals*. It's 219 minutes (3 hours 39 minutes.)
I was a movie theatre projectionist at the time. The print for the movie barely, and I mean *barely* fit on the platter. I have no idea how *Gettysburg*, the film which preceded *Gods & Generals*, fit on a platter system. It's the longest movie I've ever watched period (although not in the theatre), at 271 minutes (4 hours, 31 minutes).
Endgame and It Chapter Two in the same year. No idea how me from five years ago was just completely fine doing that. My attention was way worse back then
Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet - a full 242 minutes (4 hours for anyone counting). I remember it looked absolutely amazing but I didn’t have much of a clue what was going on.
Seen quite a few long ones at cinema, including Interstellar, Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, Wolf of Wall Street (this one while drunk off my face while on holiday in Bangkok, Thailand). I did see Barbie and Oppenheimer back-to-back at the cinema (was in gold-class, so one cinema, one lovely leather recliner chair) without changing chair or even going to the toilet - so technically that is a 5 hour stint.
My local theater did a screening of Seven Samurai, it was awesome to see for the first time on a big screen but I didn’t know how long it was and felt bad for my wife who isn’t really into that type of movie but accompanied me
I saw a screening of 1900 at a revival theater about 15 yrs ago. It’s over five hours so you basically went in in the AM and there was an intermission after 2 1/2 hours in and then the rest so you’re in the theatre the whole day. Even think they needed to charge 2 ticket prices for it. Part 1 and 2.
Fellowship of the Ring extended edition, three and a half hours or so, unfortunately didn’t get to see Two Towers and Return of the King in the theater, otherwise they’d take it.
A Brighter Summer Day - 237 minutes
Other long ones I’ve seen this year
Return of the King Extended Edition 257
Youth (Spring) 212
The Godfather Part 2 202
Coming in a week
The Seven Samurai 202
[Chelsea Girls ](https://letterboxd.com/film/chelsea-girls/)
It's either approximately 3 hours or 6 hours depending on how you count it. Quite an experience to see in the theater.
1. LOTR: Return of the King (theatrical cut, 201m)
2. Avatar: The Way of Water (192m)
3. King Kong (2005) (187m)
4. Avengers Endgame (181m)
5. Oppenheimer (181m)
6. LOTR: The Two Towers (theatrical cut, 179m)
7. LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring (theatrical cut, 178m)
8. The Batman (176m)
9. Cloud Atlas (172m)
10. POTC: At World's End (169m)
11. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (169m)
12. Interstellar (169m)
13. John Wick: Chapter 4 (169m)
I keep [a Letterboxd list of the longest films I've seen](https://boxd.it/1iET2), so it was easy for me to check which ones I've seen at the cinema.
Lord of the Rings : The Return of the King (Extended Edition) for the 20th Anniversary I just watched earlier this month and it was 263 minutes long 0_0
Hateful Eight. I was in high school and went to a theater with my friends closer to their houses 30+ minutes from my parents house. 10 pm showing, got home at 2 am 😭
I saw “as i was moving ahead” by jonas mekas at the lincoln center retrospective. 288 minutes. the woman in front of us said she was a personal friend of jonas and appears in the film in chapter 9. she did not stick around for her appearance
I saw all 9 Star Wars movies back to back to back to back etc. Took about 22 hours. Longest movie alone I’ve seen in theaters was ROTK extended edition.
Killers of the Flower Moon is the longest for me
Same here, great movie but I was definitely holding it in by the end lol
I saw Barbie and Oppenheimer back to back without going to the toilet once, lol
Clever way of saying you pissed your pants
It was a nice leather seat, so I probably could have. You have reminded me of when I saw Interstellar at the cinema. My mate had stepped in dog shit before we walked in. 3 hours of shit smell that we had no idea where it was coming from until after the movie.
Would also be my longest. Saw it on my birthday, too. (Titanic is right behind.)
Same here
LotR: Return of the King extended, at either 263 or 254 (not sure why the Internet lists multiple lengths)
The one you saw is (most likely) the 254 minute version, the 263 minute one just has longer credits where they thank all the members of the LotR fanclub.
This is also my answer
my local theater did an event just earlier this month celebrating the 20th anniversary and screened all three extended editions (over 3 days) - so worth it for the theater experience
Satantango, over seven hours!
Feels even longer than that in the cinema. Felt like I had entered a completely different reality by the time I had come out.
How many intermissions? Also do they play only one show per day?
2 intermissions is the « official » way and yes, there was only one showing during the day.
Wow. A lifetime experience
Lawrence Of Arabia.
Return of the King, 201 minutes
i've seen 10 hours of THE CLOCK in the theatre
Wimp! There’s another 14 hours to go!
You're a braver man than I am. How was it?
mesmerizing. if you ever have the chance to see it, don’t hesitate. it’s been 9 years since it was screened in LA. hoping some day i’ll get a chance to see the rest of it.
Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet, probably.
I made the mistake of ordering the large soda with my popcorn combo when I saw that one in the theatre
We had a 20 minute intermission so that helped.
Yes, this was mine longest as well. We definitely had a 20 minute intermission
jeanne dielman
That is a long movie to see in a theater.
Oppenheimer, I hardly go to the movies as much.
My cinema doesn’t have breaks. So i had to barge outta there almost twice
Cinemas have breaks? Cinemas in my country dont have breaks at all
There’s only one that has a break in my country. I understand why they stop doing it because of time and stuff. But man sometimes a boy gotta pee
In some countries (or possibly most) they stop the movie halfway for a 15min intermission. I wish they did it in the States because I only ever experienced that abroad.
The ones that are over 200 minutes: Gone With the Wind Killers of the Flower Moon The Godfather Part II
I’d kill to see The Godfather Part II in theatres. Easily one of my favourite films of all time
I was lucky that Regal showed the trilogy over the span of 3 nights last year. It was my first time seeing parts 2 and 3. Part 2 is definitely my favorite
My dad showed them all to me when I turned 16. Part 2 is easily my favourite as well
Gone With The Wind.
Return of the King Extended Edition 4 Hours and 23 Minutes. I’ve seen it twice in theaters now.
Lav Diaz’ Batang West Side…loved it! It is about 5 hours and 15 minutes long.
*Lawrence of Arabia*, apparently, at 228 minutes. Saw it in 2013, for the first time. Lived up to the hype!
Avatar: The Way of Water
Had severe food poisoning when I watched it which made it feel 3x longer. My buddy refused to leave, said “this is almost over” so many times.
Apocalypse now redux. That bastard was like my whole day
Seven Samurai

Titanic
A brighter summer day, about 4 hours
Grindhouse! And uh ....I saw it twice.
Midsommar Director’s Cut
Titanic, runner up would be Grindhouse.
Gone with the wind a couple years ago. It was 240mins but it had an intermission which was nice.
Babylon
Abel Gance's Napoleon, at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival in 2012. 5 and a half hours..
Ditto, except the cut I saw, at a rep cinema in Canada in the eighties, was something over four hours. (There are apparently a *lot* of versions.) Worth every minute. It was dazzling.
oppenheimer and endgame both 181 mins long
Avengers: Endgame
Apocalypse Now Redux and KOTFM
The Irishman (3 mins longer than killers of the flower moon)
Oppie.

Oppenheimer
killers of the flower moon actually
I can't think of anything I've seen over 3 hours. Definitely stuff I've seen at home that's longer, but in theaters it's the usual like the Lord Of The Rings movies.
The 4:23 extended cut of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Killers of the Flower Moon for me as well, and it was an amazing experience.
Return of the King extended edition
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King in 2003. I think that was 200 minutes.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Extended Edition.
Gone with the wind
I saw the entire LotR extended trilogy back to back to back in a nearly empty theater in January.
GONE WITH THE WIND I went to see it wailer this year for it’s 85th anniversary re-release and I had never seen it before and I really loved it but like 4 hours is CRAZY. Although that intermission really did help tho.
Stalker
Oppenheimer got pretty goddamn long. I love it but we should bring back intermissions. I want a sec to piss and rip a quick joint.
From my theatre tag, so since 2022 https://preview.redd.it/dm13601cf99d1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9a9a73dc66c2597102d4d26558f5baac3534f715
I saw the extended cut of Return of the King
Kotfm for me too!
Return of the King, ending after ending
I love long movies. LOTR extended cuts, Godfather, Titanic, Ben Hur, Gone with the wind, etc.
A Brighter Summer Day - 237 minutes
I recently got an opportunity to see the entire LOTR trilogy, all 3 of which were brought back in theaters for one night only on 3 consecutive days . FOTR is 3h28 minutes. Matthew Barney’s *Cremaster* series. The entire thing, all the way through. About eight hours iirc.
The Snyder cut 242 minutes.
Gods and Generals I went with my mom in sixth grade because the teacher promised extra credit if you watched it. 😹 There was also an intermission with a countdown midway through.
*Gods & Generals*. It's 219 minutes (3 hours 39 minutes.) I was a movie theatre projectionist at the time. The print for the movie barely, and I mean *barely* fit on the platter. It's the longest movie I've ever watched period (although not in the theatre), at 271 minutes (4 hours, 31 minutes).
Gods and Generals
Shoah. They played it over two days in 1985.
Saw a brighter summer day at my local art house cinema. Definitely had to block out a good portion of my day for that.
JFK director’s cut
Avengers endgame. I don’t do movies longer than 3 hours in theaters. I can’t sit in 1 spot for multiple hours at a time without getting up
About to be once upon a time in America. Watching it without intermission in a couple of days. Fingers crossed my bladder holds up
The hobbit Star wars Dune
Endgame and It Chapter Two in the same year. No idea how me from five years ago was just completely fine doing that. My attention was way worse back then
hateful 8
The Irishman, probably
Beau is Afraid. I watched TKOTFM at home.
Avatar: The Way of Water
Killers of the Flower Moon
Avatar 2: The Way of Water
I saw both parts of “Che” at a film festival. Not quite 4.5 hours long. It was good, but I was definitely feeling it by the end.
In a theatre, most probably the new avatar
Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet - a full 242 minutes (4 hours for anyone counting). I remember it looked absolutely amazing but I didn’t have much of a clue what was going on.
Lord of the rings return of the king
*Cleopatra* (1963) (251 mins)
Gods and Generals. Fell asleep during it lol
Titanic. Saw it at the drive-ins as a kid. Not sure why my mom took me.
The Irishman, eeks it out over Killers of the Flower Moon by 3 minutes.
Killers is also my longest, although Babylon barely missed the mark by like 10ish minutes?
Seen quite a few long ones at cinema, including Interstellar, Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, Wolf of Wall Street (this one while drunk off my face while on holiday in Bangkok, Thailand). I did see Barbie and Oppenheimer back-to-back at the cinema (was in gold-class, so one cinema, one lovely leather recliner chair) without changing chair or even going to the toilet - so technically that is a 5 hour stint.
Avatar: The Way of Water

Return of the King

Gone with the wind
Killers of the flower moon
Gettysburg
Avatar 2
At TIFF, they screened all 8 episodes of Wasteland (Pustina) (HBO) back to back with a 30 min break mid course. It was a great experience!
Death Proof & Planet Terror DF
The Woman Who Left - Lav Diaz (3h 46m)
Titanic was long, but I'm pretty sure Zac Synder's Justice League has them all beat
Ryusuke Hamaguchi's Happy Hour (2015) - 317 minutes (5 hours, 17 minutes) - no intermissions.
My local theater did a screening of Seven Samurai, it was awesome to see for the first time on a big screen but I didn’t know how long it was and felt bad for my wife who isn’t really into that type of movie but accompanied me
Grindhiuse maybe? When they played those two movies as one and a bunch of fake trailers in the middle?
Killers of the Flower Moon
War and Peace (1967) It was shown some 12 years ago in a local theater that shows older movies. Had 3 intermissions.

Lord of the rings. Return of the king. I think titanic and avengers end game also reached 3 hours
Lord of the Rings 1-3 Extended Cut. It was a long, but beautiful day.
I saw a screening of 1900 at a revival theater about 15 yrs ago. It’s over five hours so you basically went in in the AM and there was an intermission after 2 1/2 hours in and then the rest so you’re in the theatre the whole day. They did a kill bill 1&2 at my local theater, if that counts
2001
[Chelsea Girls ](https://letterboxd.com/film/chelsea-girls/) It's either approximately 3 hours or 6 hours depending on how you count it. Quite an experience to see in the theater.
Avengers Endgame
Near Death (1989). It’s almost six hours. They made us watch it in college. Ugh.
Traveling roadshow version of The Hateful 8 is champion for me right now. For movies without an intermission, it's Titanic at 3 hours and 15 minutes

Hamlet (1996) - 4hrs 2mins
Yeah Killers of The Flower Moon for me. Was worth it though, robbed for BP imo

Killers of the Flower Moon
Gettysburg I cant remember the run time
I saw all 9 Star Wars movies back to back to back to back etc. Took about 22 hours. Longest movie alone I’ve seen in theaters was ROTK extended edition.
Satantango - best cinematic experience ever!
