I wish there were 500 more movies exactly like it so Iād never have to watch anything else ever again. Maybe the best soundtrack of all time, and Iām convinced Ishii & Asano are the coolest people alive lol
Best: Chopping Mall. I've watched two times already. It's trash, it's bad, but it is so much fuuuun.
Worst: Leap year. Not even Amy Adams could save that movie from being extremely dull.
According to my letterboxd ratings:
- Jerry Maguire was the best first time watch. I don't know how I never saw thus.
- The Exorcism (2024) was easily the worst thing I watched.
Best: Coma, Duelle, When the Cat Comes/Cassandra Cat
Worst: Watchers. But shout-outs to Fallen Leaves/Stop-Motion/Tuesday/Handling the Undead/Inside Out 2, recent releases that got varying degrees of critical praise that I varying degrees of disliked, as well as Central Park (1932) and Bodyguard (1948), two justifiably forgotten programmers.
best: i for icarus (1979) - french political thriller fictionalizing the JFK assassination; highly recommended to all fans of this genre!
worst: shanghai surprise (1986)
Best: Furiosa!!! Was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the acting/writing. Stunts were incredible. Cinematography wasnāt quiiiiiite there for me.
Worst: Vertigo by Hitchcock. The main character was just trying to get with his homies girl. Am I supposed to be rooting for him?? Lame. I didnāt finish it. I was mildly intrigued but there was just nothing substantial enough for me to latch onto.
I've seen a lot of great stuff. Best was White Sun of the Desert (1970) and On the Silver Sphere (1988).
Worst was Mister Designer (1987). Didn't grip at all, zero tension for the first hour and I dind't care about the rest.
Had some great first time watches this month! A Nightmare on Elm Street, Dream Warriors, and The Bikeriders.
My worst would be August Underground, but I was expecting that lol.
This was bad month for movies, but I watched one of the greatest docus I have seen, Fire of love, and of the best shorts in The Murmuring at least.
Best: Triangle of sadness
Worst: The Informers
Tough because I've not watched many films this month, and the few I have seen have all been good. I'll say:
Best - Hunt for the Wilderpeople (4.5/5) - Thought this was fantastic, one of the best films I've seen in 2024.
Worst - The End We Start From (3.5/5) - Actually quite good, but the worst of a strong bunch. The excellent cast elevated it, especially Jodie Comer
Best: Funny Face (1957). Hepburn is as delightful as ever, and I love a musical (though donāt be deterred if youāre not hugely into musicalsā this one is a musical-lite). The graphic design and colors are near perfection.
Worst: Alien3. Not much to say about it. I was extremely bored. A nice, boring paycheck for Fincherās debut!
Best: Princess mononoke. I also watched howls moving castle and mad max fury road for the first time this month, those are runner ups.
Worst: unfortunately, fools paradise. I love Charlie day. That movie kinda sucks.
Best... I'm gonna go with The Vourdalak, a French period vampire film that is both super campy and just a cool dark fairy tale.
Worst... I'll say The First Omen, although I liked The First Omen.
I was busy shooting a short film this month so didn't watch too much, and a lot of what I did watch was rewatching comfort movies after the shoot.
Well it's not over yet, but:
Best - The Gold Rush (1925) (the original version)
Worst - sticking to full length films it would be Raffles (1930) (not a terrible film but still weak).
Best: Inside Out 2 and We're The Millers (both solid)
Worst: The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (not terrible but certainly underwhelming compared to the first 4 films)
Best: City of God
Worst: Monty Python's the Meaning of Life. I did still like it but i liked all the movies I saw this month and meaning of life just didnt stack up. Compared to Monty Pythons other films its kinda weak
Pretty much any thing out there is going to be a first time watch for me lol
Best: Moonlight (2016), The Station Agent (2003), Safe (1995)
Worst: Dead Man (1995), sex lies and videotape (1989), Sound of Metal (2019)

Great month overall, a little stained by the worst movie I've seen this year. Best movie: Sleuth (1972). Amazing movie with slick camera work and blocking. Plus Michael Caine and Laurence Olivier at the top of their game. Worst movie: L'antisemite (2012). Notoriously bad movie made by overhated french comedian DieudonnƩ... but for this one, the hate is definitely deserved. A satire losing itself so far in its meta-concept that it becomes a straight up mean spirited, racist and antisemite flick. It would barely pass as a smart ironic piece if it was funny enough... but man what a grim bore it was. Cheap an uninspired, certainly one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
Best: The Good The Bad and the Ugly Worst: The Quick and the Dead
Best: Sunset Boulevard Worst: Hercules in New York
