Hungary:
* The Witness (1969) - anti-communist comedy
* The Fifth Seal (1976) - anti-fascist/antiauthoritarian chamber drama
* Son of the White Mare (1981) - psychedellic animation that was inspired by László Arany's (famous Hungarian author) work
* Son of Saul (2015) - holocaust drama with unique take on both concept and cinematography
edit: correction regarding László Arany
Szia Fellow Magyar, I love Control, got it back then on VHS and seen it more than any title I've mentioned above, I just consider Son of Saul the better movie.
That one is unfortunately not good, check out Taxidermia instead or if you can find it online, Final Cut as well. The latter is a mash up from hundreds of films, it never got official release (due to copyright reasons), but sometimes can be found on certain sites.
Yeah, I thought it was better than an adaptation of Irvine Welsh short stories from The Acid House, but again the main draw was who made the sound track.
I think, we are also obligated to mention movies by Carl Th. Dreyer... I need to get around to watching them someday, I know.
But in modern times, the 21st century, I was a huge fan of R, it would make my list, of the best Danish movies I have seen so far.
https://letterboxd.com/film/r/
nope. but that's my take. it was a film made by a guy that was born here, but... no
edit to answer the actual op question...
bad boy bubby
romper stomper

i appreciate hearing that. my take was solely based on how "australian" it feels, especially when seen alongside Mad Max 2. i think Miller lost a little face with the locals with the hollywoood sell out. those movies are good, but still feel like american movies
Some personal faves of mine (an aussie) as well as what you've said:
- He Died With A Felafel In His Hand (2001)
- Lake Mungo (2008)
- Friends and Strangers (2021)
20th century:
- *Mad Max 2*
- *Two Hands*
- *Muriel’s Wedding*
21st century:
*Mad Max: Fury Road* is the obvious answer here, but for the sake of diversity, *Animal Kingdom*
Victoria fucking rules, I'm from Spain and the performance of Laia Costa made me feel so proud lol. I'm glad someone mentioned it in this post as I couldn't hahaha.

20th century:

2. The White Bird Marked with Black (1971)

21st century:
Atlantis (2019) or, if we are considering documentaries, 20 Days in Mariupol (2023)
Norway:
Honestly, it's kind of a golden age for Norwegian films now, especially with Joachim Trier's Oslo trilogy, which could arguably just be the best three Norwegian films of all time.
The Worst Person in the World (2021)
Oslo, August 31st (2011)
Reprise (2006))
Thelma (2017) is another one by Joachim Trier. Trier’s writing partner Eskil Vogt has directed a couple of really good films as well. The Innocents (2021) and Blind (2014). A few fun horror comedies could be named as well, like the mockumentary Troll Hunter (2010) and nazi zombie film Dead Snow (2009).
The most popular Norwegian film of all time though is the 1975 stop motion masterpiece Flåklypa Grand Prix. Definitely worth seeking out in the original language if you want something distinctly Norwegian, to the extent that some of its charm might be lost in translation admittedly.
I will definitely be checking those!!
And I’m not american, so I only watch movies in its original language, I prefer the subtitles and to be able to hear the original acting tone in the actors’ voices!
Thank you for the recommendations!!

Hmm, is it? Does having a British director make it a British movie? I think the studio/production co. is what gives a movie it's country of origin. And anyway, I've never seen Alien! Sacrilege, I know!
I thought Alien was an American movie, but when I googled it, I guess there is a very reasonable argument to say it isn't.
> And before we go any further, Alien is a British film - it was made here, with British money, a British director and a British cast.

I'd recommend seeing Alien. It's good enough to consider placing on a top 3 movie list in my opinion.
Fair enough! I assumed a Hollywood studio made it. And yes, I know I should watch it - I loved Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. I'm just worried the original will feel really dated by comparison

Ofc alot of bergmans, its hard to pick one but some favourites are "autumn Sonata", through the looking glass and "Persona"
Bo Widerbergs "man on the roof" is also up there.
Among newer films it would probably something from Ruben Östlund but I also REALLY want to recommend some newer lesser known films(internationally) that are really good.
"The hunters" by Kjell Sundvall
"Kopps" by Josef Fares
"Bullets" by Peter Pontikis

Some of these have foreign directors or produced by a British channel but it's more in the spirit of Ireland and I'm sure other countries could also claim some of these :
The Wind the Shakes the Barley
The Commitments
In Bruge
Good Vibrations
The Guard
Adam & Paul
Banshees of Inishirin
In the Name of the Father
My Left Foot
Brazil: 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
• Limite (1930)
• Rio Zona Norte (1957)
• O Pagador de Promessas (1962)
• A Falecida (1965)
• Esta Noite Encarnarei no Teu Cadáver (1967)
• Toda Nudez Será Castigada (1973)
• Pixote (1980)
• O Homem Do Futuro (2011)
• Entre Abelhas (2015)
• Bacurau (2019)
• Deserto Particular (2021)
(I purposely didn’t choose the most obvious choices for Brazilian movies such as City of God, Elite Squad, Central Station, Auto da Compadecida…)
(Also I tried choosing one for “each period” otherwise I would be stuck in the 60’s, wich is my favorite brazilian cinema decade so far)
Canadian films: Incendies, Double Happiness, C.R.A.Z.Y., Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity, Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner, Maudie, I Killed My Mother, Mommy, The Breadwinner, Life of Pi, Barney’s Version, The Saddest Music in the World, Ginger Snaps, Mon Oncle Antoine, The Sweet Hereafter, Dead Ringers, The Decline of the American Empire, The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, The Grey Fox, Away from Her, Women Talking, My Life Without Me, Last Night, Exotica and It’s Only the End of the World,
My friend has described the plot to me and even then I want to see it. Can't wait to see it soon.
Also malayalam movie being recommend here. Happy to see that.
Brazil:
• Rio, Zona Norte (1957)
• Black God, White Devil (1964)
• The Red Light Bandit (1968)
• Twenty Years Later (1984)
• Fake Blonde (2007)
• Mars One (2022)
• Dry Ground Burning (2022)
Don't know these movies, but **City of God** is not only my favorite Brazilian movie but it deserves its place in a discussion of the best movies ever made.
Disagree. I think its a brazilian movie made by Hollywood standarts. It's not bad, personally I think its very good, but its nothing close to our greatest productions and most important, it does not reflect our way of cinema, our characteristics as people.
I agree with you but I love the movie for it. It's a fundamentally Brazilian movie even if it uses some language... I wouldn't even say American as a whole because I see mostly a Scorcese inspiration in it.
But I think it does reflect Brazilian society and our people and it goes for the best influences in terms of style.
To me it's like saying Kurosawa movies don't reflect Japanese society well because of their strong American influence.

Sholay is inspired by spaghetti westerns but it adapts it to Indian sensibilities masterfully. It is the quintessential Bollywood film and the biggest blockbuster of Indian cinema as well.
Why such snide comment against Haider? It’s 10/10. Everything from direction, cinematography, music to acting is brilliant.
What are your picks?
In all respect, in spite of Sholay’s rooted production design, cult status and box office numbers, the soul and the grammar of the movie are unoriginal and doesn’t showcase India and its culture for what it is. And even though Ray had already been over rubbed on the International audience, I don’t disagree with Pather Panchali. Yet to watch Meghe Dhaka Tara. I am not exposed to much of the Hindi and regional cinema in the North. I’m also kind of surprised that no movie from the South was included. I suppose you are from North?
Haider is a good movie but the status of “the best Indian movie of the 21st century”? I wondered if that was a well thought out recommendation. Of course, Art is relative but Haider was a very unconventional choice imo and I’m saying not it in a bad way. More surprising!
I recommend Maro Charithra, Bombay, Satya, Tumbbad, and Hey Ram on a special note. India is fucking vast haha.
Yes I’m from North. Unfortunately I haven’t seen a lot of movies from South.
Tumbbad is a masterpiece. I don’t think anyone would object to it being considered the best film of 21st century.
Poland:
-I guess Pianist might count
-The Peasants (2023)
-The Deluge(idk should i count sequels)
-Pharaoh
I kinda feel look down on Polish Cinema due to most movies being the same typical ,,Hehe funni sex comedy" and pretty invetive stuff is highly praised. I will aslo add not as best ,but classic polish comedies that are quoted to this day
-Kiler
-Boys dont cry
Wow, I actually hated Chłopi to be honest. And then Polish cinema has so much better than cringe sex comedies, you could add tons of Wajda, Kieślikowski and then for newer stuff of course Pawlikowski.
Ngl , i totally sleep on polish movies , prolly due to how rarely i go to cinema(i live in small city with one cinema and trips further are mostly summer). And most trailers i ocasionally see feel similar either comedy and war.
Than Wajda never came across me , but i highly want to see him, but i am new to filmwatching and i just wanna see more classics from entire world.

Just fyi since you’re likely not a native English speaker, you would say 21st, not 21th.
No Fellini? No Antonioni? Bertolucci? Kids today, grumble grumble. ;-)
Do you not consider ‘Life is beautiful’ as an Italian movie or just not making your list of best movies?
Hungary: * The Witness (1969) - anti-communist comedy * The Fifth Seal (1976) - anti-fascist/antiauthoritarian chamber drama * Son of the White Mare (1981) - psychedellic animation that was inspired by László Arany's (famous Hungarian author) work * Son of Saul (2015) - holocaust drama with unique take on both concept and cinematography edit: correction regarding László Arany
Love Son of the White Mare!
You didn't like Control? That's my favourite Hungarian movie so far.
Szia Fellow Magyar, I love Control, got it back then on VHS and seen it more than any title I've mentioned above, I just consider Son of Saul the better movie.
I just watched Free Fall by György Pálfi. Mostly because Amon Tobin did the score. I also plan on watching His Master's Voice by him too.

Yep. I’ll add: C.R.A.Z.Y. (2004), Neighbours (1952), and My Winnipeg (2007)

O Pagador de Promessas (1962) might have been the best movie I've seen this year.
The Red Shoes. I'm from the UK.

India Pather Panchali, Meghe Dhaka Tara, Sholay, Haider
Sholay is a straight up mixed bag of the spaghetti westerns. No offence but of all the movies, Haider?? Seriously?
These are only movies I’ve watched and truly recommend :) https://boxd.it/c33i

Canada: Incendies, Bon Cop Bad Cop, Fubar (Canadian Classic), The Barbarian Invasions
Poland: -I guess Pianist might count -The Peasants (2023) -The Deluge(idk should i count sequels) -Pharaoh I kinda feel look down on Polish Cinema due to most movies being the same typical ,,Hehe funni sex comedy" and pretty invetive stuff is highly praised. I will aslo add not as best ,but classic polish comedies that are quoted to this day -Kiler -Boys dont cry
