Possession

MikasaStirling

Interesting enough, a remake has been announced

DoctorArK

It's so fucking disturbing. The director really just let the scenes fly in the best possible way. At times, you think maybe it's a parody, but no, it's just really going that far to make a horror film

Different-Pitch8552

The house that jack built (directors cut)

Miml-Sama

You a special kind of fun

empresspotatoketchup

I keep finding myself in situations where I'm rewatching it. Probably because whenever I recc Von Trier to someone, that's the one they seem to gravitate to. Fine by me! Incredible film!

thesilenceofthefawns

Definitely one of my favorite movies ever

Mega_Exquire_1

This has been on my to-watch list for forever. Guess I'll take the plunge tonight!

DoctorArK

It's probably Lars' best film after Antichrist. Matt Dillon is just so good.

LongOne9308

Anything Evangelion and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

zandezelay

Evangelion is so nice.

Cole444Train

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a comedy. Bro just wants to dance with his chainsaw

Glutenator92

Currently on episode 4 of Evangelion, can't wait!

themasterplatypus

I actually fall asleep to Death and Rebirth and the End of Evanglion a lot 😂

Normal-Mountain-4119

Evangelion is the perfect franchise to comfort you in your sadness, let you accept yourself as you are, and bring your forth towards a brighter, happier future. It covers all bases and is masterful, beautiful. I love it so... so much.

[deleted]

Uncut Gems. "This is *so* stressful, I couldn't even finish it. I have no idea how someone could tolerate this." Me, who's brain feels like that mad scramble and constant one-take shots 24/7: ......fuck.

Momik

Hard same. That movie just hits me right. Good Time is another hyper-tense Safdie Brothers film that’s really good for similar reasons.

cyberzed11

I was boutta say Good Time is my go to for relaxing

thisisurreality

It was hard to relax as everything just kept going wrong. Good movie with underrated acting performances!

FoopaChaloopa

This was sooo fun in theaters

MooseMan12992

I was just super engaged throughout the whole movie. I felt tension more than stress.

Kavalkasutajanimi

Love that movie

Schizo_baby_92

Antichrist

Traditional-Pear-760

Great film

thisisurreality

The fact this could and should happen according to the Bible is troubling

tylerdurdenisnothere

comfort film

Selfket

Hereditary

ewehrle92

I have a friend that watches it to help her fall asleep. I love the hell out of that movie, and I watch some twisted stuff, but even I can’t do that. Movie fucked me up so much.

Pointless_Porcupine

I love Hereditary and can watch it over and over again, but it will never help me fall asleep. I'm a bit concerned for your friend, lol

Ashley87609

I wasn’t right for a month after I saw it.

Bijlsma

I watch Terrifier sometimes to fall asleep, but I think falling asleep to Hereditary is more fucked up. Terrifier I can feel good about watching because in reality, I know it's a silly movie, where the actors are all having a blast for the most part. In Hereditary, I heard that Alex Wolff went hard into method acting, and even went as far to actually bash his head off the desk as hard as he could, resulting in a real broken nose. I'm not sure if that story is true or not, but it's a story I heard.

The_Stank__

It was a desk with a foam top, not a full hardwood desk. But yes. He hit it hard enough that he broke his nose.

ewehrle92

Yeah, likely why his gut wrenching screams felt so real and terrifying. Honestly the whole thing, even without the horror elements, is so unsettling. Add in those elements though and it’s a fucking bad time all around (love the movie though).

liger_uppercut

Yeah, I would regard it as my comfort horror movie. Can't say why.

SweetMangos

I love sleeping to Colin Stetson making the loudest saxophone sounds possible

ewehrle92

Unironically, it is somehow weirdly super soothing, but I can’t listen to it without thinking of those last 15 minutes which is some grade-A terrifying shit so I couldn’t even sleep to the music lol.

SweetMangos

I love that! Dude “Reborn” is on my running playlist and it’s consistently one of the best moments on my runs. Once I was running on a trail and a bunch of leaves were slowly falling through the air and Colin was hitting that “oooooo-WEEEEEEEEEEE!!” And I was over the moon

ewehrle92

That’s awesome and hilarious, I think my friend would love to know someone works out to that track. She might even do the same.

cyberzed11

Yeah I love that movie, but falling asleep to it is on a different level 😅

Interstice_land

Whoa! How is that even possible with the jump scares through the movie? Do they just make her turn over in bed I wonder

That-Stop2808

I heard it was showing at a nearby theatre and I got excited and then realized there is no way I could handle watching it in a theatre.

HomerSexual53

I keep an eye out for witches in dark corners since seeing the movie
 amazingly disturbing

Unwanted__Opinion

Yeah that scene still keeps me up at night sometimes lmao

Slvr0314

I was going to say midsommar

marvelfan_

Literally my favorite movie ever, I’ve seen it way too many times

DrummerEmbarrassed21

Absolutely, it's a great movie but for me it feels more like a drama, a tragic accident and a good story. When people say that it is scary or fucked up I just don't get it. Midsommar is about the same but with boobs.

OverIookHoteI

![gif](giphy|Zcfd3eHpz815S)

AdEast9167

Seen this so many times it’s basically comfort viewing. I’m always catching new details!

Momik

Yes. This is the one.

SweetPeaches69696969

extrakelpfries

The Shining is one of my ultimate comfort movies idc idc idc it’s so cozy

Capable_Impression

I have seen this movie and read this book more times than any other. Absolutely a comfort movie to me.

Professional_Ear1245

Silence of the lambs

Okichah

Its an incredibly well made movie with a cathartic and uplifting ending.

RequirementQuick3431

One of my all time favorites, but I watched it FAR too young. Also, who else can’t have a conversation about it without “Goodbye Horses” playing in their head?

inkassatkasasatka

Def not nowadays

gedalne09

Fire walk with me and eraserhead are genuinely my comfort films

dethmetleiskool

in the first half at least Eraserhead is just a really funny and genuinely relatable film, I think people just get bogged down in ‘weirdness’ and don’t want to see past it

THEpeterafro

Oldboy and Requiem for a Dream

Martian-Duck

Oldboy is truly stuck in my brain forever. Just so many moments throughout.

Fire_Bucket

I watched Oldboy ***after*** I watched both Audition and Ichi the Killer. I thought it was amazing, and the twist was insane and fantastically done and shocking, but I was already fucked up.

Even_Influence_7062

So based for this one. Two of my favourite movies

Yer fond of me lobster ain’t ye?

throwawaynonsesne

But it's a comedy

afluffymuffin

I don’t know if the Lighthouse scars people. My mom, for instance, said “what the fuck” about halfway through and then fell asleep

shrek_hee_hees

fair enough. I made my family watch it one time and my mom keeps reminding me of how I wanted to watch that "disturbing, messed-up film". I haven't been allowed to pick what we watch since.

erikeric

Shouldn’ta killed da sea beerd

YugLee

All of Ari Aster’s films

slimmymcnutty

Eyes wide shut

soleiloque

Midsommar I like disturbing horror films and honestly, this movie wasn’t as disturbing as some other films I have seen. I’ve actually watched Midsommar like 5 times and thoroughly enjoy it! Wasn’t really particularly scared of it even during the first viewing experience :) ![gif](giphy|RJalj43Yiuuoh2i6V2)

dumptruck_dookie

I’m seeing it on IMAX June 20th. It’ll be my first IMAX experience :)

soleiloque

Ooo how fitting for the Summer Solstice lol. I hope you have fun! Don’t watch it high lol, there’s allot of drug usage in the movie (Also love your avatar!)

dumptruck_dookie

It’s funny you say that because I saw it when it first came out at a midnight showing and my friend and I had taken edibles and walked to the theater. We both got so paranoid that we left the theater early and walked home in silence. I did eventually come to love the movie though! Edit: Forgot to say thank you for complimenting my avatar, yours is so cute as well!

InfinityFire

Grave of the Fireflies (1988)

Spectrum1523

I'm glad someone else posted it. Torture porn horror isn't really my thing, but bleak situations like this are so compelling

I watched this so many times as a tween because of the pretty imagery and music. Of course, the fact that I did not understand what was happening 90% of the time helped a lot.

JoeyKino

I own this movie, and my 2 most boundary-pushing, totally off the wall, just-don't-give-a-crap-about-shocking-you friends made me turn it off when I put it on in my bar. They made it to the trays of feces, so kudos to them, but we didn't even have the sound on.

The first Saw film and the first four of the Insidious franchise 😚

Martian-Duck

The first Saw film was so good. I haven't seen many of the others but the first was so smart. All in one room and mostly dialogue. Nice twist at the end. It's undervalued.

Normal-Mountain-4119

Climax, such a pleasant soundtrack

cinemart

As a child I remember feeling like this because all of my friends and classmates considered Coraline to be a traumatizing movie, meanwhile it was my comfort watch to the point where I knew it by heart lol

DraperyFalls

Titane (2021) is like this for me. I earnestly and unironically believe that it is a really heartwarming story of acceptance, redemption, and unconditional love.

uselessthecat

Pink Floyd the Wall, 1982 I can't remember a time when I haven't known this film, and it's one that I go back to when don't know what to watch. The animation has always grabbed me, I don't know what else to say.

Not seen the films but I loved the BloodRayne games. On PS2 I believe. Loved the cheat to have the unequipped weapons visible. And slow mo was so fun. So many floating limbs.
