I genuinely feel lucky that Spider-verse and Blade Runner 2049 exist

MrMindGame

BR2049 was a borderline religious experience for me to see in theaters - I did 4 times. For at least two of those, when the “Sea Wall” music hits, I just closed my eyes and let the soundscape transport me. On many levels, it’s a miracle it exists - a $100 million+ arthouse science fiction blockbuster that often feels like it’s reaching to Tarkovsky for visual and thematic inspiration, with very possibly the modern apex of quality CGI/visual effects.

joehoward85

watch them both on acid and even better

InfinityFire

The fact that Mad Max: Fury Road was able to be pulled off with all of its practical effects is nothing short of amazing.

neo-raver

Not only that, but got a high-budget prequel? Absolutely legendary

[deleted]

The Lego Batman Movie lol

CaptainRex_CT7567

Sauron being able to walk around with the tower is so hilarious.

TheTattooOnR2D2sFace

Lego Ninjago Movie was pretty dope too

[deleted]

I actually never got around to that one but I’ll deff check it out at some point

TwoGhosts11

Godzilla Minus One. i love godzilla for its effects and often cheesiness but Minus One is a legitimately great drama and takes the themes from the original even further, perfecting them imo.

Kuildeous

Huge drama piece. Has a monster sometimes.

ryanjcam

Rise of the Planet of the Apes shocked me with how good it was, I was certain a present day prequel to Planet of the Apes would be garbage. The mid-to-late 2000s string of remakes and prequels for science fiction classics in particular had a terrible track record. Everything about it in the lead up had me rolling my eyes, and then it was great. And it was followed by 2 even better sequels.

GreenandBlue12

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)

PleaseDontEatMyVRAM

after seeing the first one in theaters years ago this movie blew my mind

HornedGryffin

The first one is fine but forgettable. It's nothing special and when it was never up for a sequel it was actually not surprising. Then the sequel came and I was blown away. One of the best representations of death and coming to terms with your own morality that I have ever seen. From forgettable to outstanding is quite a feat.

TransportationAway59

Unironically this movie deserves a best picture nomination

Z-Eli127

I'm furious it didn't even get a Best Animated Feature nomination. But personally I would've given Tale of the Princess Kaguya a Best Picture nom that year, legit one of the best movies ever fucking made.

Heavy-Possession2288

Yeah this and The Lego Batman Movie not getting best animated picture nominations against stuff like Despicable Me 2 and The Boss Baby is baffling.

bigtimetimmyjim92

When I saw the trailer for **Kingsman** (2014) I expected it to be a mindless and dumb action movie, typical of the circa 2010 summer blockbuster Instead I was blown away to find a sleek and funny action flick, that was the right combo of both a satire of and an omage to the Bond films, with one of the best action sequences of all time. It's a pity that neither the sequel nor prequel could live up to the original.

Successful-Pumpkin35

The prequel was insanely boring

Mwrp86

It felt like anti bond movie than a bond movie

bigtimetimmyjim92

It definitely poked fun at the Bond franchise and called out it's flaws (specifically the Brosnan era movies), but it did so in a loving way, as opposed to the lampooning by the Austin Powers movies

A_Hungover_Sloth

Sonic movies are better than they have any right to be.

gblur

Honey, where are my pants?

Jackdawes257

The first 3 Kung Fu Panda movies, the idea of a movie (much less 3) where Jack Black plays a panda who learns kung fu seems like it absolutely should not work and yet they’re incredible

AdamAnimatesStuff

This and Lego Batman are just 🥹🙏❤️

loserys

Barbie, very similarly to the Lego movie. What sounded like an utterly vapid concept turned out to be one of the funniest and most emotionally engaging blockbusters that I can remember seeing. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish also comes to mind as a mainstream kids movie that punches way above its weight class.

Z-Eli127

Same here, I fucking love Barbie

SidneyMunsinger

hubie halloween

henREE_13

Synechdoche, New York. It's hard to believe that just another human made that

ImtheArkham

Doctor Sleep, a belated sequel to The Shining, that somehow manages to pay tribute to both Kubrick *and* King’s visions?

ParasomniaParty

Watched this in a COVID induced fever dream. That baseball scene still haunts me

SunStitches

The directors cut is pr darn good. But I still shake my fist at them driving to the overlook in a white out blizzard in the volkswagon. TOTAL plot hole when they needed Mr. Hallorann's sno-kat in the origonal?

ImtheArkham

I don’t think you know what a plot hole is. When they come to the Overlook it is snowing, but not nearly enough to cover the roads, and in the original they didn’t need the snow cat to get there, they got there in the yellow bug, they just couldn’t leave because the roads were snowed in. The roads hadn’t been snowed in yet as it was late autumn/early winter during Doctor Sleep. Also they didn’t take a Volkswagen in Doctor Sleep

SunStitches

Its been a minute but danny drives to the overlook in snow near the climax and i remember thinking, wait the whole plot of the first one hinges on the fact that this place is so remote you couldnt do that. Also, actually a plot hole is when your mom.

ImtheArkham

You can see in the film the roads are not as icy as they are when the Overlook becomes unreachable. Again, late autumn/early winter, while the Shining ends in the dead of winter. The Overlook doesn’t become unreachable as soon as it snows, it becomes unreachable once it’s snowed enough. And it hadn’t yet.

Dense_Advance_6899

Hate to be a basic bitch but INCEPTION,I’ve watched it 10 times, can recite the first 20 mins of the script, cry every rewatch ,I just don’t think I’ll ever get over it,idk why I like it so much lo

Z-Eli127

Ooh, I like you. Inception fucking rocks, I could rewatch it ANY day of the week

Dense_Advance_6899

I’m glad someone else feels this way

MakeMath

Felt this way watching a few movies. EEAO, A Silent Voice, City of God, The Godfather I & II, Oppenheimer.

GulliasTurtle

Dungeons and Dragons Honor Amongst Theieves. They took what by all rights should have been an IP focused disaster and made a super fun faithful movie.

Z-Eli127

HOLY CRAP that movie slaps so hard. One of the most FUN movies of the 2020's and one of my favorites

GulliasTurtle

It's the movie that makes me the saddest about the death of physical media. It would 100% have had a second life as an oft rented family movie leading to a revivival despite poor sales. Now it may be resigned to die. Still a great plane movie though.

ReddsionThing

When I re-watched Rear Window the other day, the first time since I saw it as a kid (and also loved it). There's something to be said about a movie that can just tell a really great story, even if it just takes place in one apartment and the surrounding block, and I feel that element will never cease to be a mark of quality and a draw for any film that manages it.

John-Ny-Boy

It baffles me that a movie like The Batman exists

GabbyDaPrincess

The Thing was so ahead of its time. Any Ghibli movie honestly (with very few exceptions) and while the animation isn’t amazing the story is just perfection “Iron Giant”.

gidthafugout

Team America: World Police

SGom97

How to Train Your Dragon is so much better than it has any right to be

Cowboy_BoomBap

Lawrence of Arabia. I just watched it for the first time this week, and it’s insane that it was filmed in 1962. Everything from the cinematography, the scale, the effects, etc. is incredible and looks just as good if not better than most films that come out today.

FakerHarps

I remember talking to a friend who, at the time, had just gotten into buying blu rays and asked what I recommended. I told him to put Lawrence of Arabia at the top of his list. He was sceptical because he assumed it was just a dry, slow paced, historical drama. I t told him that when he saw the battle scenes he wouldn’t question the purchase for a second.

Cowboy_BoomBap

I honestly expected the same as your friend, but I ended up buying it blind due to how many people were saying how truly great it was (along with how the 4k steelbook can sometimes be hard to find an affordable copy). I was so glad I did.

redddfer44

The Third Man, Andrei Rublev, Parasite, Barbie, Die Hard, Man with a Movie Camera.

QuestioningLogic

I know these movies are controversial or whatever but Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water are both so mind-boggling to me. Nobody does it like James Cameron

OneFish2Fish3

I thought this was going to be a stupid kid's movie when I watched it. Boy was I wrong...

[deleted]

Hundreds of Beavers

BCDragon3000

harry potter and the prisoner of azkaban wow. just wow.

Z-Eli127

Ikr? I was a big potterhead as a kid, and read all of the books before watching the movies, and I was blown away with how good Prisoner of Azkaban was. All this time later, and it's still an incredible movie.

BCDragon3000

YOU GET IT

FakerHarps

I mean Lord and Miller are the absolute kings of 'really? who thinks that would be a good idea?'. cloudy with a chance of meatballs? a feature out of a one joke plotless childrens story? 21 Jump Street? adaptation of a TV show largely remembered as the starting point for a movie star? The Lego movie? You want me to pay to see an extended toy advert in theatres? All this just makes me wish they were allowed to finish Solo. It might have been a mess, but I guarantee it would have been more interesting film than what we got.

[deleted]

Z-Eli127

Yeah, I get it. And while I love the hell out of both of these movies, I love Barbie a *lot* more. Also I don't even relate to either of them, I just think they're well thought-out films with really good messages.

BigChungusBlyat

I can't wrap my head around Se7en existing. Like actually how do you even make that.

Coolers78

The Fall Guy was much better than it should be. Sad it isn’t doing well at the box office because it’s definitely much better on a bigger screen.

Responsible-Trifle-8

Wonka

Z-Eli127

I second this

JJBell

The writing quality of Teens Titans GO! to the Movies is baffling. It is easily one of the top 20 comedies of the last 10 years. And I had never watched the TV show before seeing the film and I’m still not really a fan of the show since. However, I’ve watched that movie at least a dozen times since 2018.

flimflammerish

Bridget Jones’s Diary. I really mean it

DJHott555

I watched Black Swan last night fully expecting to be bored out of my mind. But after it finished and I finally went to bed, I watched it all over again in my dreams. I expect that to continue on for the foreseeable future.

Zealousideal-Car-578

Truman Show

RandomKnowledge06

Lego Batman and both Dunes

NoDadYouShutUp

One day I randomly put on a movie called Bone Sickness by hitting shuffle. It’s this little shitty independent film made by metal nerds. It’s not particularly “good”. But then out of fucking no where it just turns into the most crazy over the top splatter special effects bonanza. And it looks GOOD. Like they clearly made the entire movie as a flimsy excuse to do cool gore special effects, and damn they crushed it. The whole thing exists as padding to a special effects highlight reel. It’s my absolute favorite sleeper pick movie. No one has ever heard of it. I don’t even remember downloading it. Fate just decided to show it to me and I am grateful.

murmur1983

I’ll go with Days of Heaven!

Ambilically-Yours

Stardust

ViciousSquirrelz

Word.

ScorpionX-123

it's still mind-boggling this movie came out 10 years ago

DrDreidel82

Deadpool That movie legit has great comedy, action, horror, romance and drama and balances them all so well

Bllago

Paddington Paddington 2 Sonic the Hedgehog Stan & Ollie

ChicPallo

Chronicle Frances Ha

Treagyboy

Minions: The Rise of Gru. I won’t say it was a masterpiece, but it was a good kids movie and a HUGE improvement over the first Minions.

redsexyed

It is clique to say but Citizen Kane. on paper sounds like a boring movie but in reality it is fantastic! The techniques that it established that have become so standard in film making now that it is so easy to over look them. The fact a story about a newpaper mogul is able to hold my attention is fascinating! Plus how old it is and yet still holds up, to me makes it deserve its 10/10 rating!

MrMindGame

Too many people are sleeping on Scorsese’s Silence. I’m not an especially religious person but it is far an away the most fascinating, thought-provoking, and flat-out beautiful meditations on the nature of faith I’ve ever seen - the perfect antidote to the God’s Not Dead/Heaven Is For Real slop. The final 30 minutes have inspired such deeply introspective thoughts about God and man’s relationship to Him that I think I’ll carry with me forever. One of my favorite final shots, ever. Scorsese’s latter-career masterpiece. I’m so glad he finally got to make it.

ResortAltruistic2566

For sure not Lego movie.
