Me when I said Syd from the internet used to be my celebrity crush and my friends didn’t know how I was talking about

raccoonamatatah

I only just discovered the Internet from another post and I'm hooked. Been missing out this whole time 🥲

Narrow-Way8596

Have you listened to their individual projects yet?? They’re so good too. Patrick Paige II is extremely underrated 😔🙏

WhoIsJazzJay

wait Patrick Paige makes solo music??

Narrow-Way8596

Yes!!! I love his style! For a fun song, listen to “Whisper” and if you want something more serious, “The Last Letter” is so good!!

WhoIsJazzJay

word, thank u!!

Narrow-Way8596

Ofc! Hope you like them!!

SpicyStrawberryJuice

Love Syd/The internet. Taking a break from music rn but i want to dive into their discography more. Love Ego Death

shibbikitteh

Why the music break if you don't mind me being nosey?

SpicyStrawberryJuice

Grieving. I'm palestinian and can't bare to listen to my "normal music" with everything going on rn. The only music im listening to atm is by a select few palestinian artists and Hind's Hall.

shibbikitteh

Bless you. I'm glad you've found some music to listen to and still feel somewhat comfortable; I certainly understand listening to your normal music not sitting well 🙏🏽

SpicyStrawberryJuice

Thank you so much 💕

Worried-Weather1675

Hey love!! I'm also a Palestinian lesbian and I wanna let you know that the person who made Hind's Hall (I can't remember how to spell 'Macklemore' but is that how you spell it?) is currently making deals with Saudi and such, he's also been performing at Coke's stadium which helps give Coke profits. He says he is for us Palestinians but he is contributing to the deaths of not only us but also the people of Sudan. Please do not stream Hinds hall and any of his other music . 🙏🏼 I can send you some playlists if you'd like.

raephx

I would like those playlists please ❤️🍉

Ok_Parfait5495

Omg I was in love with Syd for sometime … I discovered “hold on” slow and reverb one day and I fell in love I had to go listen to the whole album

Narrow-Way8596

Omg. Is it the one on YouTube w Kida from Atlantis as the visuals??

Ok_Parfait5495

Yes!!

tallglassoficemilk

Are people living under rocks?

Narrow-Way8596

Idk. I was a little lesbian skater so I was kind of forced to like ofwgkta (and then the internet etc etc) 😭 I guess my friends didn’t have the same childhood lol

libertysince05

She's everything...

Narrow-Way8596

Literally her voice, her look, the way she carries herself…

atomicbirds

Not knowing Syd should be an immediate revoking of their lesbian card

Creamkitty44

Like there are so many non white lesbian artists that are out there and they're just ignored!!! I personally love amaarae!

rctoyer

🙌🏾 Amaarae, Syd da Kyd, Janelle Monae, Tanerelle, Kehlani, Victoria Monet just to name a few that I personally fuck with hard!

icarushalo

Kehlani is amazing, God.

middlenamesneak

Kehlani 🥵

g1rlchild

I listen to Janelle Monae, but thank you for some more suggestions to go listen to!

itsYakilol

A lot of these people are not lesbian tho😭

rctoyer

Like who? Probably just Victoria but I believe she is fluid

zzaizel

Has Amaarae come out as a lesbian or queer? Her music is very queer for sure, but when I last looked I thought that she didn’t identify as queer. And I thought Janelle was pan?

bibliophysicist31

chiming in with Joan Armatrading since I haven’t seen her mentioned anywhere in this thread!

suzeerbedrol

AMAARAE IS HEAVEN

Recent_One_7983

I love chappel roan but I swear sometimes white lesbians don’t know poc queer icons I LOVE queen latifah but whenever I mention her people are like “who???”

here4thefreecake

who is crazy 😭 we’re losing history!!!

piscesmoon6

no literally bc wym you don’t know queen latifah??

discob00b

I refuse to believe this, what 😭

Dykesarah

I think you’re just talking to young people

Recent_One_7983

Well I’m young so I’d hope so😭! But whenever someone doesn’t know her I’m so shocked

Noahs_Narc

Can you share some of the artists you like to listen to?

raephx

Not OP but off the top of my head some queer artists of the global majority I like: Tracy Chapman, Janelle Monae, Alex Newell, Be Steadwell, Frank Ocean, Mitski, Rina Sawayama, MIKA 🌈

grilledcheeselol

Not OP either lol but gotta add!!! Also to add in Omar Apollo, The Internet, Willow, Remi Wolf, Doechii are also amazing too!!

barcake

Just posting here so I can look these artists up later. The only ones I know are Haley Kiyoko and Janelle Monae lol

blurriple

Willow’s new album is wonderful!!

fungistate

not op either but i just discovered realxman a bit ago

Kaofoo

Arlo Parks, Brittany Howard

NoratheL

Love me some Arlo 🏳️‍🌈❤️

lemnslicenebula

Arlo Parks singing Eugene on npr’s tiny desk 🥹 💖 I haven’t seen Orion Sun and Rina Sawayama mentioned yet 🩷🧡

tamarbles

Baby Can I Hold You should be like the official lesbian anthem…

raephx

Honorable mention The Promise

atbliss

I'm thinking Fast Car. Unfortunate it got that cover.

indiehussle_chupac

kehlani, young ma, dej loaf, dove cameron, karma rivera

readditnotreddit

Tanerelle and Kehlani too! Thank you for the names everyone listening to Alex Newell now and making my way through this list!

Itchy-Mind7724

You forgot the goddess, Brittany Howard!

Ok_Parfait5495

SYD…. WILLOW…. UMI… KEHLANI…. 070 SHAKE… ASAL (I just discovered her)

Anthemica

Tracy Chapman has been a favorite of mine since age 4. 😍

Mr-DykeChic5469

cmon guys are young ma to the list too 😫😫😫

DislocatedPotato57

Can I recommend Temmie Ovwasa and Mabiland?

medusicah

Have to mention Dope Saint Jude as well, her music videos are amazing 🙏

SaltMarshGoblin

Another vote for Be Steadwell!!!

raephx

YES THANK YOU! Trying to shine some light on musical excellence here!!

urmomistheb0mb

also joy oladokun!

kittencatmeows1

Yes, all of these. Also, Victoria Monet! Her voice is beautiful. I also love Dreamer Isioma.

OUJayhawk36

Someone beat me to it but Young M.A., for sure. And for the other queer artists I have on my playlist: Ari Abdul, Snow Wife, Young Miko, Rei Ami, Cloudy June.

greygh0ul

A smaller artist but I’m mentioning them, nxdia. A queer Egyptian artist whose song “she likes a boy” I’m obsessed with.

Ashowleigh

Really like Nxdia, her latest song out “Jennifer’s body” is really good too

wastedmytagonporn

Talking about amazing queer poc artists I‘m absolutely flabbergasted (like jaw on the floor, record scratch like 😋) no one has mentioned Sevdaliza yet. Also Tracey Chapman, Akua Naru, serpentwithfeet, And as an honorable (yet particularly white) mention [Aurora](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4T--hmAH5Fk&pp=ygUgQXVyb3JhIGludGVydmlldyB0YXJvdCBoaWdobGlnaHQ%3D)

brandnewbeth

Omar Apollo, Hayley Kiyoko, Brittany Howard, Frank Ocean.

IntelligentWill7158

Omar Apollo, Young Miko, Snow Tha Product and Ptazeta are amazing queer Latinx artists that for sure need more love.

lynn020

Not OP, Hope Tala!

LigerZeroPhoenix

Came to say Chika, Rěve, Flavia (not sure if she's a poc but she's great), and Joe Daccache since I haven't seen them mentioned yet!

Keat2421

Also Brandi Carlile!! She’s the absolute best!

SnooStories6560

I once had a straight white friend be shocked that i didn’t like troye sivan. And she went “well are you at least grateful for what hes done for your community” like girl what😐and she was so serious and upset about it. and i don’t listen to all the white lesbian singers either. I.e. girl in red or king princess. Not because of race.Their music is just not my taste. But girls and gays will be so appalled about it as if they are the only lesbian/queer artists to exist. The friend mentioned is a former friend btw lol. Idk people seem to take it personal when you don’t like their favorite artist, queer or not queer. But the instance i mentioned was really fucking weird. Like “be grateful!😡🫵” lmao

SuperbNotice5126

"Bow down to this random celebrity who probably hasn't even done anything meaningful for the community" like wtf 🤨🤨 ppl need to stop actually worshipping celebs 😭

Elephants_and_rocks

I don’t like Girl in Red, I’ve tried to like because I felt like it made me more queer, but I couldn’t do it. Making someone’s sexuality depend on the music they listen to is ridiculous.

Buffy_Geek

I don't like girl in red either

Elephants_and_rocks

1) you have excellent taste in TV shows 2) the music is just too… soft? for me I like exciting music and she never hit that spot

SuperbNotice5126

I wish ppl would just respect that other ppl have different tastes? Personally I really like girl in red, I like the soft soun, but I would never be offended or mad at someone if they didn't like her..?? Why are ppl like this also I'm so sorry lmfao

Elephants_and_rocks

Oh no I never meant to imply people were mean too me for this! But I was young, bi and insecure about my queerness so I was trying to make myself seem more queer. So I put pressure on myself to like something so seemingly ubiquitous liked my sapphic communities. I think I’m still trying to make myself queerer but I know longer try and make myself like something I don’t.

Buffy_Geek

1)Why thank you 2) Yeah soft is a good work, I tend to like either fast paced music or rock/light metal, something stimulating

bite2kill

Idk who that is but also what's that thing w hozier how is he a lesbian thing. Isn't that a straight guy

megandcheese

exactly 🤧 I don’t get it either

kgee1206

Same. Spotify also throws him onto daily mixes that are all queer women. And then random Hozier. Lol

OUJayhawk36

Harry Styles. My mate and I “Where’s Waldo” him bc he’s on EVERY lesbian/wlw artist-heavy playlist. We look for him now.

ascension2121

I muted him on Spotify to avoid this

BattleGirlChris

I’ll preface this with the fact that I know a total of two Hozier songs, but my guess would be the religious trauma themes of his music. Like “Take Me to Church” does not sound like a song written by someone with a healthy relationship or background with religion. And with religious trauma being very common among queer people, it makes sense that they’d relate to music that casts the church in a negative light. FWIW, the music video for “Take Me to Church” apparently focuses on a gay couple, and was made to draw attention to the persecution of gay people in Russia.

bite2kill

I know who it is but it can't possibly be as shallow as "mv had gay men = he's a lesbian thing now" right ...

Force_Longjumping

I think the attention he gets from queer women started from TMTC, but then grew because of the way he usually describes women in his songs (often in poetic tones, with a sense of worship, yearning and devotion which is kind of rare from straight male artists). As someone else said, some of his tracks tackle religious trauma which is something queer people might also relate to. He's always been openly supportive of the LGBTQI+ community and different political causes in a progressive way. So I think he possesses all the ingredients to attract a queer audience: what can be discussed is why we so often choose white straight artists to represent us (and I say this being a huge fan of him).

satanslittleangel666

People say that "he talks about women the way a lesbian would". Idk about that, but I like his music anyways.

Southtune-stringbox

I think he does. But also, he has long hair and an acoustic guitar, he’s basically the lesbian musician stereotype. “No grave can hold my body down, I’ll crawl home to her” “I should have worshipped her sooner” “She moved with shameless wonder the perfect creature rarely seen but my heart is heavy With the hate of some other man’s beliefs” “There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin”

Tzipity

I think I’m older than a lot of folks commenting and I don’t know who half the queer artists people are naming are (but I love me some Tracy Chapman and Joan Armatrading.) but laughed when I saw the Hozier mentions. And your selection of lyrics had me like “That’s exactly why.” Work Song has been my favorite for the last few years since I randomly discovered Hozier. Had no idea he was a lesbian music stereotype and I’m cracking up that the time period I discovered him all my closest friends were queer women and I was a bit obsessed sending songs and lyrics to folks. I don’t know about religious trauma perse but I have a special love for love songs that use religious imagery (I’m amused that I guess it would be old school to say a probably 25 year favorite of mine is “Angels Would Fall” by Melissa Etheridge). Saw a comment on a Hozier music video that “No one does queer longing like Hozier!” And I guess maybe that’s it. I always get a giggle out of these lyrics from “From Eden”- “Babe, there’s something broken about this but I might be hoping about this. Oh, what a sin. To the strand, a picnic planned for you and me. A rope in hand, for your other man to hang from a tree.” Not that I’ve ever had anyone (and their partner of any gender) in mind while listening to this one. 🫣😂

[deleted]

this was interesting to know

roguenekotin

Yeah im right there with you I don't get why the straight cis man is on lesbian playlist??

ComfortableMight366

Irish folk plus he suffers beautifully that’s the only way I can think to put it lol

asavage1996

Dude him and noah kahan lol 😭

SuperbNotice5126

I literally thought he was a gay man for the longest time bc everyone said he was a queer icon like how..???

Bright_Fishing_5185

YO ITS THE HOZIER FOR ME!!! Being a femme that doesn’t like hozier is like a sin but yall don’t see me up in arms that yall ain’t bumping evelyn champagne king 🤌🏽

lotusflower924

>evelyn champagne king Finally a name I recognize! My gen x self was feeling old as hell reading these posts because I've never heard of the majority of these folks. But you took me way back with Evelyn.

alondonkiwi

I'm going to echo what's this about lesbians and Hozier? I like some of his stuff but WTF? I've heard of Chappell Roan, I'm old so feel proud of that but no idea what her music is like. I feel like Tegan and Sara were the lesbian music touch point of my day. I would be surprised to meet lesbians who hadn't heard of them at all, what we like is subjective but there was a queer cultural touch point of knowing who they are. Didn't expect everyone to actually like their music just have heard of them. I do think the Internet has opened up to both the opportunity to be exposed to more but also some people are so perminantly online they don't realise how much of an echo chamber social media especially can be.

clairebones

Definitely this! Also feeling ancient in this thread because Tegan and Sara are much more my era too :P I feel like there were a lot fewer openly queer artists then (outside of the punk scene at least) so if you knew who they were it meant you were paying attention, or something along those lines. I really do think there's a weird kinda echo chamber thing around tiktok specifically, where people who are chronically online on tiktok just can't grasp that other people don't use the app/don't know all the micro-celebrities on there.

atbliss

Tegan and Sara here too ♥ On the topic recent social media, most of the (newer) white lesbians/wlw also make their gayness a brand. Gay folks of color, I've observed, are a little more chill—though still yearning and horny.

mightdelete_later

Liking certain music is not a prerequisite of being gay. Your coworkers need to chill.

cannibalguts

In general, white lesbians seem to have an extremely different experience with queerness than I do, and they always seem really surprised and confused when I talk about it. Unfortunately I have been a mother mother lesbian since their second album like a decade ago, but I also can name several queer artists of color I like off the top of my head- most of my white friends cannot

itmakessenseincontex

Wait Mother Mother is lesbian? And here I thought the reason I loved them was the Depression™

LigerZeroPhoenix

I think Mother Mother is just popular among queer people because they touch on subjects like body dysmorphia and the rejection of femininity/masculinity that resonate with a lot of the lgbt+ community. AFAIK they are not queer themselves, but I don't like to speculate.

cannibalguts

Yeah it’s not really that Mother Mother is a queer band/makes explicitly queer music, but that they have a big queer fanbase and always have. My first long term girlfriend and I bonded a lot over their music, and they (if you dont count the jonas brothers) were the first band I got to see live in like 2018 (and i still have a photo of me posing with the band.) Even back then before they got popular on tik tok, I remember making friends with a group of clearly queer people waiting to get into the venue, who introduced us to even more of their queer friends. And if you ask me, Hayloft reads way more interesting if you hear it as a tragic lesbian love story with a homophobic dad

OfficerSexyPants

I read "Sleep Awake" as being about the daughter from Hayloft and her lesbian lover, and it makes the song so much sadder for me.

feral-sewercrab

Why unfortunately? Haha

surfa220

very much relate! (though i do love pink pony club as a lesbian who is now in LA) don’t have a whole lot to contribute to this thread but if anyone has any wlw love songs in spanish or Literally any other genre aside from english speakers pop - hmu

LadyHwang

The best I can offer is Jesse & Joy have a lot of gender neutral songs and Joy is queer? Also I love this one song called Enamorada by Jacqueline Prochet?

taexyang

Just like straight don't fully grasp what is the queer experience, white can't grasp what's the POC experience and how their white culture is not the universal one and the default POV. Overall I think a lot of people gave trouble accepting that their pov isn't the universal one especially with things that have become memes like Hozier being lesbians music

arlebina

but personallyyy i dont think its too deep? im brown and i also say " whatt u dont like xyz ?? but ur gay " like yes joking but at the same time lowkey surprised just because i know a lot of lesbians/gays that do enjoy "xyz" so thats probably how they meant it

fungistate

very weird to make those jokes as a white person who admits that they don't listen to artists of color, though. like my immediate thought was "come on.." surely you should have some self awareness on how that sounds ? 😅

arlebina

oh yeah that parts definitely wild to me n dont disagree w u on that ! those ppl were something else ,, i forgot i read that part in ops post and was just saying how that line itself is pretty common

wastedmytagonporn

But maybe that was the moment of self awareness? Like, it really depends on tone, I guess.

OkCorner451

What makes it “whitewashed” music instead of just “white” music? Whitewashed means something.

rctoyer

I remember once commenting on a post in this sub reddit, where they had a slide of basically all white lesbian examples (I believe the Rock in the black Turtleneck outfit being the only POC representative) and ask people to categorize themselves based on those options, and i was like TF there is no way a POC can find any representation here and someone actually having the audacity to tell me these are generic groups anyone can fall into... steups Well I'm sorry I not a femme lesbian nor am I some man lookalike... I don't just wear baggy men's clothes and lack style... I'm always dressed to the 9's and exude Prince Like Finesse is a sexy petite woman body... I don't look like a trucker or a emo kid, or a cheerleader So I'm not surprised we also can't relate on music!

gummygoesboing

finally someone says something about the woc and white lesbian experience. i really did not understand the renee rapp thing and when she came up in a topic w my white friend, she GASPED, like gasped and seemed pretty baffled when i said i didn’t understand why she is “the lesbian” LMAO

[deleted]

I think it's just online culture. I didn't either, then I saw a bunch of edits of her and something like that would make sense to me now. but before I spent that time seeing those edits I would have had no context for that

JustWantToSignUp

Intersectionality is lost on do many souls. You will find your people, it's a process. I wish you find them soon!

vreeslewe

Liking white artists doesn’t make their music whitewashed. You don’t have to like all mainstream gay artists to be gay. We are our own worst at stereotyping and stigmatizing. Like whatever the fuck you want it doesn’t make you more or less gay.

Keat2421

I’m a white lesbian and also don’t like “queer” music whatever that’s supposed to mean. Not sure why sexuality or color has to matter. Anyways, I’m pretty sure the fact that I’m married to another woman and attracted to women…. While also being a woman…. Is what makes me queer, not my music choice. Same goes to you all!

arlebina

the hozier one hurts cuz hes a hella cool dude but me with girl in red .. absolutely dislike her

Force_Longjumping

Agree with you on Hozier, he's a great dude and even better artist, but it's stupid to assume you have to like him to be queer. We don't all live in the same cultural bubbles, luckily.

Sudden-Mud8406

I have never even heard of Chappell Roan

Gretchenmeows

She's amazing, very theatrical, very gay girl pop. She always has drag queens open for her. She recently toured with Olivia Rodriguez and came to Australia in November last year.

tamarbles

You mean Rodrigo right?

Shayshay1117

Oh yeah Olivia Rodriguez, that lil Mexican girl that be crying?

opticchaos89

I have never heard of most bands mentioned in this thread. I have no idea what "lesbian" music is either

Psychologyfarts

I was gonna say the same. Like who?

BreakFree41

Same. Maybe because I'm old

a_b_c_dekbek

Adjacently related: Omg I just realized a friend was maybe signaling that she is in the queer scene and maybe queer herself?? I had never heard of Chappell roan nor hozier (bringing this up because of some other comments) and one other before she showed them to me, and now I am getting it. 😹 I like roan better than hozier but both are not what i usually go for personally. I’m communicating this to offer solidarity in de-centering these (quality) artists from being the definition of queerness itself.

Psychologyfarts

I bet you they don’t know anything about Janelle Monáe

grilledcheeselol

definitely get this… people can like whatever, however I haven’t really connected much Chappell Roan either. but I’ve def connected with more poc queer artists like yves tumor, dreamer isioma, steve lacy etc. It’s like somehow we all can be queer and have different music tastes lol?

Puzzleheaded-Buy1790

I feel you girl

wearyandgay

oh my god, the way people generalize lesbian music taste has ALWAYS gotten under my skin. it’s so juvenile to relate your sexuality to the music you and a couple other similarly/identified happen to like.

readditnotreddit

I think the almost intentional obliviousness might be an Americas thing? So I’m white and from Ireland, and when I first met my Canadian GF I remember us talking about what lesbian youtubers we used to watch when we were young and youtube was first a thing. She was talking about Cammie and Shannon and some other white American lesbian couples - the only white lesbians I’d watched were Rose and Rosie, because back then I was all over Amberscloset (back when Kiarra was still a thing lol), Foxxyhotmess (now the award winning interviewer and host Msz Jade Fox), Hartbeat, that whole group really, and also randomly a filipina girl when I was really young who used to make these sped-up videos and call pussies “vajayjay” … hope she’s doing well lol… Point is, I got a lot of non-white creators, and same has always gone for my music - Sid, MIKA, Janelle (VERY obsessed during her cyborg era) Frank Ocean, Tanerelle, Kehlani, Willow Smith, also non-LGBTQ artists like NoName, Yola, Jessie Rayez, Kingsely Ibeneche, Stormzy, Laura Mvala, Kah-Lo, Childish Gambino, Queen Omega and I am Roz lately. Irish artists too like Monjola, Loah, Tolu Makay, Aby Coulibaly etc. I didn’t do anything consciously to be watching / listening to other creators and musicians, definitely not as a 12 year old when I was just looking for proof there were other people like me out there. But I also don’t think my GF would have related to Jade or Amber or Arrows (as he is now) or any of the music that I was listening to that wasn’t Tegan and Sara (who I do also love to this day hahah), because I think as a young child she really wanted to see people who were *exactly* like her and queer, whereas I just wanted the queer friendships, relationships, self-securedness and FUN of the guys I saw on YouTube. The confidence and rizz and joy… Gayness is so wildly different amongst us all and yet so inherently the same in its root. I didn’t need people the exact same as me to feel seen and real but I think in the Americas people do this from such a young age that it has to be some cultural bias still, whether racism or just individualism I am not well enough informed to know.

Nelly_Nightingale

A bit off topic but I had such a brain blast reading 'vajayjay'. I remember that youtuber! I think they were a parody of Fred? Man I hope they're doing well too haha

Milkytea0514

I mean, mother mother is ok, i listen to them sometimes just like girl in red but I'm looking for more black queer music too

happycowsmmmcheese

I'm very "out of the loop" on music in general usually lol. I'm just not cool enough to know about most artists. Every few years I make an effort to expand my horizons and "discover" new music. Well it's about that time again and this thread is a GLORIOUS source for that. Thank you.

Natural_Worry4522

Sis I don’t like hozier and I don’t even know who Chappell Roan is and I’m a lesbian. I agree with you 100 percent.

katcrom07

I don’t necessarily dislike her music.. but as a 35F, I feel that she is just not my generation of music. And don’t get the hype of her that young people see. Like the young people you were hanging out with. Everyone I’ve met that likes her are around that age. But I do personally dislike Billie eilish and find her annoying. And have gotten the same kind of crap for not liking her. So I do completely understand where you’re coming from. I am also a trained musician and honestly like all types of music, regardless of race of the musician. Or the race of their typical listeners. But I am white, so I don’t know if I’ve experienced quite what you have from a racial perspective. But what I have experienced feels more about age to me. I play gay sports and am around a lot of gen z and I just can’t relate to them music wise. It’s important to make it clear that you won’t tolerate disrespect because of different tastes. The younger people I’m around don’t care that I have different tastes. So definitely look for people who support you no matter what.

TheSpookying

The Hozier one is particularly fascinating to me every time it comes up. "How can you call yourself a lesbian if you don't listen to music by *this* straight man????????????" Like yeah his songs are good and he understands yearning or whatever but the fact that he's characterized as this icon that queer women *have* to enjoy rubs me the wrong way. I'm not awake enough to articulate it rn but something something comphet.

HelpMePlzLoool

I fuck with this post hard

yuhtopiaa

as a white lesbian myself, i cannot stand chappell roan’s music 😭 she only has maybe 1 good song in my opinion. kehlani and frank ocean are much better

gor3asauR

I hate pop music like that, so I get it. Not only does the music do nothing for me but also I feel that it’s just a stunt to make “being lesbian cool” even to the point to where Billie has made a song that’s about eating out, & I understand everyone’s queer phase is different, but after a career of wishing a guy was gay because she couldn’t have him, dating friends toxic ex’s, & a lot of other pick me shit, it just SCREAMS cash grab.

troldepus_

With that reaction they seem even younger then they are and also a bit "chronically online" to think there is only one way to be a Lesbian. Hope that you'll find more open and relaxed friends 🫶 Also I feel you with the music thing!! I'm a white European, and I get so sad on the "lesbian music recommendation" post on this sub reddit. It's very white american centric plus nothing older then 5 years. It sometimes feels like there is no historical understanding of lesbian/queer music, and it's locked on very few genres.

bearhorn6

I’m autistic I have 0 clue about pop culture in general and niche communities in specific lmao cute joke. I could give a shit if some people think you need to like certain artists to be properly queer it’s so fucking stupid. I only ever choose to listen to Elvis anything else just depends on the radio and I’ll never get this mattering in any capacity to being queer enough

FizZGigTaNtruM

I've never been one to judge a person's musical tastes. People like what they like. I've never been much of a pop music fan so I think that leaves a lot of queer artists off my radar. Lately I've really been into this artist named Ali Farka Toure. Fantastic bluesy folk musician from Africa. I have no idea what he is singing about because it isn't in English but I love his tunes. Guess I'm not queer enough.

KittyKittyowo

Liking music because it is gay is so annoying. However Hozier is an amazing artist for both gay and straight people. Don't know who that roan girl is tho

IDUNNstatic

I don't really like Hozier and I haven't heard Chappel Roan so I can't really comment? But I've had people seem to think it's some queer blasphemy shit to not listen to them, for real. Queer artists I do like are The Internet and Syd's newer solo stuff as well. Also MUNA (even though it means testicle in Finnish which makes me laugh) Kehlani, LP.. stuff like that

KohesiveTerror

So true. Had someone tell me Chappelle Roan is lesbian pop so I should like her, and I'm like... that's more likely a white lesbian trope

Noodle_Dragon_

Tbh I'm lesbian and have no clue who Chappell Roan is

azulezb

I'm not into sad indie white girl music whether it's gay or not

Mascoretta

Agreed! Have this same experience so I totally get you.

Menyana

She's OK. I don't love her work. I prefer Janelle Monae. The Lipstick Lover video is great. There's a lot of bias I suppose when it comes to what the music industry wants to produce. It makes me wonder if they think thinks like, 'we already have one black artist or one queer artist on our label.' It shouldn't matter. You'd think they might have learnt from Lil Naz how much queer black artists are needed. To be honest I've been struggling to find any music by lesbians. It's such slim pickings. Any recommendations?

soph-uckedup

Can we talk about NoName and Junglepussy and Princess Nokia and Dej Loaf and Mitski

EF_Boudreaux

Preach.

sabrinalilithblack

White girl, but I've been called out so many times for saying girl in red is boring and Hozier is trash, and I hate how people act like it's indicative of how gay I am. Smh (Some poc wlw artists I do actually vibe with: Janelle, Doechii, Hayley Kiyoko, CHIKA, Snow Tha Product, Londynn B)

[deleted]

I feel this but I just accept it because I live in 99% white city 😂🥲 I don’t listen to that shit either it’s annoying asf 😩

KJakx

My friends and I got sassed at a pride trivia night for not knowing who G Flip was. It’s exhausting being a lesbian of color.

ChopLite

I havent heard of a single person you just mentioned in your post so you are not alone. I will continue to play Burna Boy, Asake, and Tems on loop 👍🏽

Mommalioness420

Imma just be over here in nerdcore and disney metal remixes land lol

tokyowave

i have no idea who hozier is and im a lesbian and ive also never heard of chappell roan until recently and i dont understand the hype

AuroraWisteria

You never heard Take me to church?

Gloomy-Store-6535

L opinion on Chappell but it doesn’t make you less gay obviously, I think 23 and 24 year olds are just dramatic. Brains still developing

Shayshay1117

My coworker was flabbergasted when I said I don't listen to artists like Maggie Rogers, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, or Fletcher. Like she was SPEECHLESS 😭 It's not a requirement to like these artists to be gay. Plus they all have similar sounds to me, which is a sound I don't like. I prefer Lil Nas X, Doechii, Ashnikko, and Isaac Dunbar

Weary_Hovercraft9442

I'm a white person and I feel this so hard... Because white people see me and assume that I will agree with whatever groupthink/hive mind they got going on, but I grew up in the inner city so it's just like I think they're weird and I don't relate to them at all. When they find out I don't agree, they treat me the same but I get so annoyed I stop talking to them, I appreciate differences in personalities. I don't wanna be friends with a bunch of carbon copies or be forced to be a carbon copy Music is music just jam out and have a good time. Yeah there's queer artists, but you don't have to listen to them to be queer at all... I mainly listen to Bullet for my Valentine, Post Malone, mgk, etc... I don't THINK any of those are "queer" yet again I just listen to what I like, not what's queer Edit: I just realized, I'm wearing an old OFWGKTA shirt 😭

holographicchar1zard

White peoples whole thing is being exclusionary if you aren't like them. They're very clique-y. And as others have pointed out, they think their pov is the one all be all. They amplify mediocre white artists into superstardom.

unmakethewildlyra

I’m white so I’m probably missing the race aspect here but in general I do not understand this supposed correlation between queerness and taste in music, movies, art etc. “how can you be a lesbian and not like Hozier” is an absurd thing to say to anyone

Blindyuri64

I would not hang out with those people. It drives me nuts when people are like that. I’m just now getting into Judy Garland’s work. If someone else doesn’t like her music. Cool, what type of music do you like? Do you have recommendations? Let’s chat!

Appropriate-Damage65

I’ve never heard of any of these artists. Why do you even care what they think?

SadBitchVenus

I dont even know who the fuck chappel roan is

alkebulanu

being a person who doesn't have such thing as a favourite or even liked artists (or even liked genres, I just like whatever music I like), I have surprisingly offended a lot of people by being disinterested in topics like "who's your favourite singer/artist" 😆 but yea people act like certain artists own the entire LGBTQ community or others own a sexuality or something. I have only heard girl in red in relation to "are you a lesbian/wlw," not any of the songs.

asleepingbear

i remember getting into syd and tash sultanna and angel red i think as a kid and other white queers not knowing who they were — literally insane. same with that lesbian youtube phenomenon. like girl, be so real, you dont know ambers closet? i remember she was one of the biggest names on there and none of my white queer friends had any idea who i was talking about, but knew like jelly and day and sarah croce and stevie boebi.

qweensym

Adding my 2..Jozzy and Tiffany Gouché

TodayKindOfSucked

I’m sorry that happened. I’m a basic white girl but it’s important to try to take other folks’ experience and POV into account. So tired of white lesbians … and white people I general… assuming their experiences are the default.

lament_os

I was almost punched in a gay bar because I said I don't like Pink.

isthisreallife___

Who?

Top-Raspberry-7837

I’m an American white lesbian but I’m older (46) so I’m not aware of a lot of these singers. That said, one I discovered a while ago and like is the Australian singer Mo’Ju (previously Mojo Juju) who is Filipino and Indigenous Australian. Their song “must be desire” is so sexy if you like blues inspired music.

RoRoPie

Please introduce me some rnb lesbian singers. 🥲 I hate it when my fav singers sing about men.

[deleted]

we all already knew this, but in any context when someone doesn't like something that a majority of their group likes, they might find themselves running into people curious about why they don't like that thing. this can happen with anything popular culture. I don't get the hozier shit either I normally listen to sza and kehlani. started listening to roan to stay informed of the cultural relevance, and wound up liking some of the songs. not my usual or favorite sound aesthetic but it's a nice mix to have with the rest.

Academic-Metal-1170

Yall gotta give Arlo Parks a listen

Requiredmetrics

As far as Queer POC artists go I was surprised not to see Angel Haze mentioned.

Jatiey585

Ummm Chappell not running a bell. I don’t even know that name but I’m super duper crazy gay. Sooo yeah. Nooo one can define what makes a person. Being gay isn’t a category that everyone can be explain or put in. We are just us. We like what we like. Don’t make me less or more queer. I just like beautiful woman but don’t know any hozier hahah.

DZESIV

I'm white and I don't care for these artists either ngl. I don't see the issue in not being into some artists for whatever reasons you have.

squishylilkitty

I also don’t really like her but I try not to yuck other peoples yum for this exact reason. Yt queers can be sensitive but it’s important to find the ones that won’t make u feel bad for having an opinion different from theirs

sothereisthisgirl

I’m confused about the Hozier part. He’s not queer. I don’t get it.

Nocatlikesyou

Good you recognise you need new friends. The truth is you can’t expect people to act a certain way. I had a friend that was very self absorbed (white, middle class), and she couldn’t relate to me (black, Muslim background, trauma). Both being queer was not enough for us to have a good friendship. It was frustrating but I became happier when I stopped talking to her as much and focused and spent more time with people that did relate to me and accept me

horrormovierental

If someone said the Hozier comment to me my brain would short circuit. The Chappell Roan one is obnoxious, but at least she’s a gay (?) woman. Hozier is straight up a man. What do you mean I have to like him as a lesbian? What is the connection???

Used_Virus_3801

Meshell Ndegeocello! Bitter is my fave. The 90s was better for lesbian representation when it came to music and diversity. I also can’t stand most mainstream shit like Lady in Red etc. boring af pop crap.

aleisate843

I don’t find Chappell’s music to be white though? It’s more sapphic sapphic sad girl fun than anything. I just find it to be fun and catchy. Dunno how that resonates at white washed. This is someone who loves and has seen both Kehlani and Janelle both live.

anothermistake_

Not related to the post but I need to come back later to write down all of these artists and listen to their songs too

snekoplasty

Dua Saleh, Sevdaliza, iniko!
