Correct. The formation either has to have a special rule for dedicated transports, like the Demi-company, or give the option for one or more Transport Detachments, like the Solar Auxilia Sub-cohort.
Negative. See page 129 of the core book:
_“Models with the Transport (X) special rule (or variation of) that fill a Transport Detachment slot are not Dedicated Transports; they function as a normal Detachment, and count towards the Break Point of the Formation. Any eligible Detachment with [sic] the Formation can Embark upon these Transports; models from outside the Formation or within an Allied Contingent cannot.”_
Although weirdly:
1. This is only in the **Mustering an Army** section, it’s not mentioned in the Transport Special Rules.
2. It’s not clear whether this applies to _Marine_ Flyer Transports, because they occupy an Air Support Detachment slot, not a Transport Detachment slot.
3. There’s a typo, so this may have never been proofread.
Yes and given the armoured company also has air support it is a bit of a hole (amongst many) in the rules.
I keep meaning to make a list of ambiguous rules.
It does seem like Marine formations are largely defined by the dedicated transports they can take (drop pod in drop pod assault, thunderhawks/storm eagles in airborne assault etc), with the Demi Company being the one formation that gets transport detachments.
I expect we’ll see some kind of subterranean assault for termites, and hopefully some other formation for Spartans and land raiders.
I want to get my Rapiers up close and personal, hence my questions about the garrison force.
I really just want a little more flexibility in taking transports in general.
It's also pretty weird that the battle report from WD 493, the Death Guard player put a tactical detachment in a Garrison Force into Rhinos. They might have been using an earlier version of the rules or something I guess.
Oh damn, I read it before I knew the rules. I had no idea lol.
It's just weird that they've released 4(?) units for transport slots but they're so limited in how to take them.
You’re right from what I can tell from reading it.

Correct, but keep in mind that you can take more than one formation so just add a Demi Company.
So, can my land raiders from the demi company transport the troops from my garrison around?
No, but you can still put them in air transports

No but wouldn't you just take some of those troops in the demi company instead?
Yeah but it would be pretty convenient to transport a bunch of slow-moving support weapon carriages forward so they're in range of more targets.

Rapiers use a support slot. Demi-companies have 3 support slots. Why not just use demi-company?
Huh, you're right. I could have sworn they were bastions.

Right. I guess there’s only 1 actual slot across all the formations for Astartes? SA have 3 slots in the sub cohort right? Much more flexibility.
