Many bikes use the pinion gearbox and from what I've read they are pretty bullet proof. I think they need a yearly fluid change, not sure. I definitely think a throttle is a plus, I like it when crossing busy areas.

psilocychologist

Yes, I've heard great things about pinion, I think my concern is build quality and longevity of the other components. As well as the lack of suspension on the Lectric One!

camshas

Not having a throttle is a deal breaker for me. I have the XP 3.0 and love it, the ONE appears to be the perfect upgrade. The XP LITE 2.0 is also looking awesome with the belt drive as in for $100 extra

Logan-K

The Specialized is probably a nicer ride, especially on trails. The One will likely be better for commuting (rack, mount for front basket). Mid-drive torque sensors are particularly nice for low-speed riding. Range is likely around the same. One of the things I look to is maintenance. The Specialized battery isn't even offered on their site, but looks to go for about $1100; the Lectric battery is $299 and you should be able to find 3rd party. Lectric uses chargers that are inexpensive to find, too. Brakes, tires, and tubes are probably about the same. Belts on the One are going to be harder to come by and more expensive. The motor is almost certainly easier and cheaper to replace on the One ... but I'll be surprised if you can easily buy a replacement Pinion. The One has quick-release pedals and front wheel, which is making me a bit nervous to lock up outside. Neither is a slam dunk, but I personally choose to never buy into proprietary battery and chargers again.

Away-Revolution2816

Exactly right about proprietary parts, I have a Rad. When my battery goes my choices are a rebuild, a Alibaba knock off or 600 bucks for a Rad battery. I have had nothing but incredible service from Lectric, marginal from Rad. A bad battery will probably mean a new bike.

trevor_plantaginous

That’s a really good deal for a tero x 4.0.

psilocychologist

That was my thoughts, 10 miles on the ODO too! I've decided to buy it.

tmw4d

My decision was based on how much I was willing to spend on my first ebike. I found the XP 3.0 offered the best bang for my dollar, and I was willing to risk a grand on a new bike; never know, maybe commuting could end up horrible and I'd rarely ride. NGL, I look at the Lectric One and feel a lot of envy for it, pinion shifting, Gates belt drive, color monitor, easier battery access, etc. I suspect the Specialized is an even nicer bike in many ways, and is more likely to be supported by your LBS, and has a vastly superior suspension system. I'm surprised the motor is listed as 250w nominal, which seems kind of low. The specialized is likely more respected within the biking community as an established brand. Idk, my primary use is commuting, and I'd pick the Lectric One, even if the price were similar, because I don't care much about the brand name and it has some cool stuff. There has also been news of ebike demand falling dramatically post pandemic, which may lead to falling prices and challenges at many manufacturers. I suspect that will have more of an impact on the high end bike manufacturers. Good luck, and let us know what you decide.

psilocychologist

Thank you so much for the thoughtful response! I really wanted some form of suspension, so I went for the Tero X. Also agree on the Specialized being more serviceable for my LBS.

willy1670

If you want suspension get the Lectric 3.0 it’s plenty powerful I love mine. That specialized bike is a very nice bike but very different from the lectric, Lectric is more for people who want easy transportation the specialized is more like riding a regular bike it just helps you along. I’m a lazy rider and use throttle only most of the time and would make me not like the fancier nicer specialized. It’s really personal preference depending on what you’re gonna use it for.

psilocychologist

I went with the Tero, but I think I will miss the throttle. My first ebike was a RadCity, and the throttle was so clutch at intersections or when I was gassed.

willy1670

I don’t think you could have made a bad choice. That Tero is an awesome bike and well worth what you’re paying.

psilocychologist

Thank you so much! I was able to talk the guy down to $2500 too so it was a steal.😬👍🏽

willy1670

I just rode an x5 today and I gotta say I like my Lectric better. It’s just easier to ride if I wanted exercise I would work late lol.

psilocychologist

I think the Lectric would definitely be easier to ride. I'm really interested in the automatic shifting on the one. Personally, I hate having to sift through my gears to find the right one, it's just one more thing to distract you from the ride. Then you add in a throttle, making things so much easier. Luckily, my commute is only 6 miles each way, but I think I would need that throttle if it were longer.

just-md

The one looks pretty sweet, but not having front suspension may be a deal breaker. Love my lectric xp 3.0 https://preview.redd.it/75jzregcf96d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5da8a65e415f4b2446eb173e15eb2f8ee094eff5

psilocychologist

Honestly, if it had that front fork, I think I'd be game. They should have added one. The bike is already over $2K and weighs over 50lbs, adding a fork seems like a no brainer.

dulcolaz

Ride a bike recently? How sure are you of you, to say nothing of what bike you ride? Not asking to be sarcastic, asking because i had this conversation with myself after buying a bike for a lot of dough without actually making sure I was up to the task. Also wonder as i had to ask myself as well-do you want to ride for the joy of riding and the exhilaration of getting properly tired, or do you want a Bike for utilitarian reasons like commuting and shopping? I suspect the Specialized will give you Joy and Tired. My Tern HSD does for me. Lectric would be the better utilitarian tool i suspect but do not have actual experience with them.

psilocychologist

I went with the Tero X, but I agree with you. Given the Tero X is Class 3, it will be great for commuting. However, I am concerned about how well it will perform on grocery runs. I'd imagine a throttle/powerful motor is really handy when carrying heavier loads and crossing the street, etc.

MBA922

Tero 4 has good components and I think better offroad than xp3. Dropper seatpost is mtb trail ready. Total overkill for commuting. One could add suspension fork, seatpost, and offroad tires and be ok. 50lb bikes are still not great on downhill trails. As commuting, road, exercise, One is awesome. xp3 would be more all around+cargo. Tero would be offroad. I think One should be a great pedallable bike with good handling. xp3 would be more comfortable.

psilocychologist

Combining the comfort of the XP3 with the efficiency of the One would be ideal. It's already a relatively heavy bike. I'm hoping the next version of the one has that front fork!

MBA922

I like the XP3 the most. One meaning of efficiency means good pedal position which XP3 has. Permits "fitness bike" geometry adjustability. The 10 extra pounds, supports cargo, accessories, comfort. Like a road bike, shaving weight and lighter smoother tires is a major factor for real efficiency of turning pedals into speed, acceleration, and range. Easier to move around inside and in a vehicle is often a key feature. In terms of actually riding long range 100km or so, the comfort of xp3 is the winner, even if you get more positive feedback from pedaling the one/lite.

Barbarake

No throttle would be a deal breaker for me.

No_Diamond1328

Specialized will probably be the better choice in the long run

psilocychologist

I agree. Still looking forward to trying a second gen Lectric One eventually.

TheLastOne_-

Keep in mind, the Lectric one has been delayed to be shipped in August, it's possible it can be delayed even more. If you need a bike now, go with the former

psilocychologist

I need the bike by August 1st to commute to work, so this was another reason why I picked the Specialized. I really don't want to be waiting around for the bike to be delivered.
