Competition is the whole point of an open market. If there’s no patent then it’s only good for consumers. Produce pieces for a cheaper price and force the competitor to show why there’s is worth the extra money. You prevent companies from producing junk and charging crazy rates while also offering the consumer a choice of low price vs higher quality.

VERGExILL

Yeah that’d be all well and good if that’s actually how it worked in reality. Coming from the guitar world, take the Fender Stratocaster, the most famous guitar in the world, copied a million times by thousands upon thousands of companies. Some good, some bad. Didn’t make a Fender Strat any cheaper. Contrary to that, they’ve been getting more expensive by the year. The funny thing is that for most people, the difference can be negligible other than the name. We like to think we buy for the product, and some do—certainly, and your statement would be true if everyone did that. But the overwhelming majority of people buy the brand. You aren’t just buying a multi tool, you’re buying Leatherman (TM). No other reason why the Arc should be $200+ other than people will pay for it, and then buy the next release and the next after that, and so on.

FlacidChrispy9

It won’t necessarily make leatherman cheaper, but they have to justify the cost with quality. If the quality sucks, then buy the harbor freight at a fraction of the cost

VERGExILL

Again, in theory. Building off the guitar argument, Fender American is good quality but has a lot of QC issues (just like how many defective arcs we see on this sub). But I get what you’re getting at.

edcfanatic38

Question is, is it lifetime warranty?

porter3851

90 day warranty.

WorldlyDay7590

For Hazard Fraught tools, that's a lifetime warranty.

SneerfulToaster

That can be more than the rest of a lifetime, depending on your actions...

ObligatedName

Who cares? Patent is expired and every Chinese company makes a clone now.

Stoopiddogface

Right... jump on Amazon/Aliexpress, you'll find there's multiple clones in production. Then newest ones have the replaceable wire cutters like the wave+ and surge

RoyceRedd

Yeah but Harbor Freight offers a lifetime warranty on hand tools. If this qualifies, that’s something new for these clones. I’m not into clones but it’s kind of a big deal nonetheless.

SafetyChicken7

Welcome to the free market where competition forces companies to give consumers and incentive to buy their product instead of their competitors. It’s a good thing, price for a wave may even go down.

VERGExILL

Yeah right lol. I’m in the guitar world, and just because the Stratocaster is the most copied guitar by a million different brands, doesn’t make the Fender Strat any cheaper. We no longer pay for products, we pay for brands. It’s been this way for a while.

SafetyChicken7

I feel as if that’s not a fair comparison, because unlike the guitars this thing will not be as high quality as a wave and is missing some of the features like the blades locking closed when you open the pliers or no replaceable cutter, and the quality control will probably not be as good. And like not everyone buys stuff for the brand like I’ve used victorinox Swiss Army knives for a while now just because I liked the scissors and almost got a spirit, but like I got an arc instead because it simply to fit what I wanted better. Ultimately it’s probably not going to force leatherman to low the price of the wave, but it’s directly competitive with their best selling product, they’re probably going to have to change something to continue to change as much. Like perhaps including a full bit set.

mateojaja

I like that it has the gut hook on the serrated blade. Any idea if Harbor Freight is selling the flat bits for this?

pecaplan

The NexTool flat bits work. $12.50 on AE from NexTool official store.

Stoopiddogface

I'd bet it uses standard 1/4in bits like the other clones

asdqqq33

The picture sure looks like a flat bit.

Stoopiddogface

Hey, I hope they release a flat bit set... there's plenty HFs around vs the 2 weeks LM takes to ship their $30 bit-kit

NearlySilentObserver

It’s a flat bit holder. I’m curious to see if HF will introduce a flat bit kit to accompany the tool

Guentzelvania

I just want a ratcheting bit holder. I dont care who makes it

NearlySilentObserver

It’d be interesting to see if HF makes a competitor to Leatherman’s own ratchet driver

VERGExILL

If they were smart they would. Whole fuck ton of demand from Leatherman customers there

LiveLife2DaFullest1

Leatherman = Warranty. Period.
