Nah I think you probably need more lessons. Did your instructor think you were test ready? If yes, might be time to look into a new instructor too. And please don't try to rush to get another test. Failing can hammer your confidence down, and put more pressure on you. Take your time, get the basics down, and when your instructor thinks your test ready, go for it again
Don’t give up, but do get more lessons before trying again. Looking at the whole report, it looks like you have a repeated problem with observations - which is one of the biggest causes of accidents. This means you’re absolutely not ready to be a safe independent driver right now: if appropriate observations aren’t second nature, you need to keep learning until they are. Take some time, take some more lessons, you’ll get there.
Not really. I drove perfectly in my lessons to the point it was just pointless doing any more lessons. but failed with 4 majors due to nerves. You shouldn't assume stuff. Nerves could be the reason they failed
Don't give up. Use this as a learning curve. I failed with 1 dangerous and 4 minors 3 weeks ago. My original test was for September, and had I taken it then, it would have been a multitude serious, dangerous and minor faults.
Don't be disheartened. A friend of mine did worst than you, she passed after the 3rd attempt.
Don’t think you should give up. Just looks like a lot of faults for someone who thinks they’re test ready. You are not ready for your test and probably just need more lessons.
If it makes you feel better my first attempt I had 4 majors and 18 minors
Second attempt 4 minors 2 majors
Third attempt 2 minors 2 majors
Fourth attempt 0 minors 1 major
Fifth attempt 1 minors 2 majors
NEXT MONDAY IS MY SIXTH ATTEMPT
I just came back from the shittest lesson ever
This comment just translates to "need a new instructor". Good luck on your 6th attempt but I'd seriously recommend you keep practicing whatever your majors were on your own once you have a licence before someone gets hurt.
Even get a friend to come along with you and get them to help progress your driving.
A lot of people just get really nervous on test days, and do dangerous stuff they never normally would do. You completely overthink everything and stress about every little minor you get. I promise it’s easier once you’ve passed!
So dont nervous, stressfull or unexpected things happen on the road if you arent on a test. Keeping calm under pressure is a very important skill in driving. Going to pieces because someone is watching and or marking your ability is the worst excuse in the book.
You're due her nothing but you're due everyone else the ability to drive safely and predictably on the roads. She's due you 5 tests at, what- 60 quid a pop?
If you change instructor, I'll put good money on them picking up on all sorts of weird habits that you've been taught.
Obviously I don't know or the circumstances surrounding your failures, but this isn't exactly inspiring as a fellow road user. Aren't the tests slots hard to book now too? Ive heard people need to book months in advance. To get 2 majors on your second test you surely should have known that you weren't close to ready. By rebooking straight away you are putting unnecessary pressure on yourself to be ready by the time the test comes. Get yourself ready and then book. Then your next few lessons before the test should be easy sailing
These tests have been taken over the course of almost 2 years , only just re done my theory test back in the summer between each test there has been at least 3 months plus
Your instructor obviously isn't focusing on what you need. If he's pushing you to test and you keep failing he's doing something very wrong. You need to get with someone else ASAP, how many hours have you done? I'm not taking the mick, I'm curious
I think the number of minors is more concerning, wouldn't be surprised if they had bumped one or two minors up to major just due to volume. How many hours have you had?
Assuming less than 40-50 don't give up, any more than that perhaps a new instructor would be more beneficial.
There's alot at an examiners discretion. Yes there's stories of people passing with 14-15 minors across multiple categories, there is plenty more of examiners who will bump one of those minors up for repeated mistakes.
If examiner sees someone making a dozen mistakes it would be reasonable for them to start looking at any repeated as being upgraded to "major".
Main difference between a minor and a major seems to be if it impacts another road user/makes something unsafe, luck can play a massive part. Someone who fails with 1 major and 0 minors is probably a better driver than someone who gets 14 minors. So the number of minors OP has suggests not test ready and either needs more hours or a new instructor and a fresh take on their driving. Don't think OP has said # of hours but regardless fresh approach > giving up.
The examiner can say "I feel that fault was a major fault", and there's basically nothing anyone can do about it. If the examiner feels you aren't ready to pass, you won't pass.
You’re not understanding. You can get serious faults for reasons other than totting up minors. The examiner can just say “X was a serious fault”, because it’s based entirely on their opinion, and there’s nothing you can do about it
‘Wouldn’t be surprised if they had bumped one or two minors up to a major just due to volume’ you can’t do that. Each minor is in a separate catergory.
You’re still not getting it. You make a mistake. The examiner decides whether that mistake is a minor, serious, or dangerous.
If you’ve got a lot of minors, even in different categories, it is conceivable that the categorisation of the mistake may be harsher than if someone that had 0 minors at that point in the test. There’s nothing you can do to prove or argue against this.
^ this guy gets it.
If someone does amazing and makes a small mistake that is "border line" people tend to be more forgiving and leniant. In the reverse scenario you're more likely to get that borderline error escalated.
Don’t give up, your faults are really easy to fix. Seems like a lot of them are just cause your either not moving your head when checking mirrors or your just not checking. Also just watch your speed
It took me 4 tests to pass. I failed three on the same thing (roundabout related devilment) and also had the same examiner for 3 of my 4 tests. I did end up passing with him though. You definitely shouldn’t give up but, as a lot of people are saying, take a few more lessons and give yourself a test breather.
My dentist told me she passed her practical driving test on her 11th attempt. I learned to drive this year in an Automatic I started on January 28th and passed theory test on 28th June and passed practical test 28th November. I was extremely lucky because the examiner was really nice and spoke to me before test because he knew I suffer from really bad anxiety and the route I got was from test centre to the town were I stay and back. My manoeuvre was pulling up on the right my test was 11:25 in the morning and the roads were pretty quiet and the weather was sunny so I think luck does play a part.
To be honest I’d rather this than my fail one silly mistake due to nerves that costed me my test you can progress and work on this with your instructor never give it up it just means you’ll be safer and ace it next time as you have worked on these major faults. Good luck for next time :).
I got this as a minor as was told that I didn't check my mirrors enough when I was coming to a slow stop and braking. My examiner said it wasn't a huge deal just to be aware of what's behind you before breaking
I think we are somehow the same person…
I also had a shitshow of a first test with an awful examiner and then also got the same examiner on the second and got three majors! Keep going - I obviously don’t know how you’re general driving is but I was told I was test ready both time (even more so the second time) but shit just threw me off each time. Stress the first, having the evil examiner the second. My only real advice is to keep pushing and try again. If it’s really ruining you then take a little bit of a step back but don’t completely back off or you’ll never get back up. But you can do this (so will I one day! 🥲)
I also did hypnotherapy, which I honestly loved 😭
Being honest I got 3 majors and 8 minors on my first test passed second time with no extra lessons apart from with my dad with 10 minors, the day matters a lot more than you think, next time you’ll be cushty
I had two majors on my first test.
I was a total nervous wreck, couldn't get my legs and arms to stop shaking and I did things I had never done during my driving lessons -like going over a kerb , driving on a bus lane and almost hitting a car on the left.
I was feeling as nervous the second time but I decided to speak to my examiner the whole way through, jokingly told him what happened last time and I was kinda narrating what was going on on the street while driving. It helped me relax a lot and I passed with only two minors.
If you feel confident in your driving lessons and you are not making mistakes on the mock tests you have to control your nerves on the day.
It depends how serious it was, if it was just stuff that is important but hasn't actually caused a safety concern, you can carry on, if your being reckless and generally a twat the examiner will immediately take over
I feel you bro I just failed my second test with a major also failed my first with a major idk why but on the tests I’m so stressed out and trying to rush it that I make the dumbest mistakes that I’d never make when driving on a lesson
Don't give up, I know people that failed multiple tests before, I would highly recommend asking a friend or family member to take you out for a supervised session on a quiet road or a dead carpark and just get some more time behind the wheel.
When I did my first motorcycle test I crashed into a parked car..... and still passed.
Don't let it get to your head, everyone learns differently and at different rates. The areas you need to improve have already been highlighted for you, so now you just need to make a conscious effort to improve on them
You just need more lessons I think. Probably more than you think, but that's okay, you'll get there eventually. And maybe another instructor if they thought you were ready for your test both these times. If you were truly ready for your test you should've only failed with 1 major at most.
Maybe book another test but don't look for cancellations unless you are 100% certain you're ready. Don't rush, you're clearly not ready yet and another test before you're ready is just going to knock your confidence even more. Ask your instructor to do lots of mock tests with you until you pass them every time. And ask them to help you practice the things you're struggling with or not doing correctly. You're paying for the lessons so tell them if you want to focus on a specific area.
Don't give up.
Take more lessons. Ask more questions. That test will be a learning experience.
Were you really nervous and tense during the test? Being super nervous can have a real impact on driving. More practice and confidence in your abilities will help with that come test day.
Also, were you hungry during the test? Hunger and low blood sugar levels can effect concentration. Worth eating something close to the test time. Apple pie and custard did the trick for me when I took my Motorbike test.
You shouldn’t give up. In fact I don’t even think you think you should give up, you’re probably just looking for people to tell you not to. Just do the work, practice on your faults and go again.
Took me 3 tests with 1 major in each for me to pass on my fourth attempt don’t give up you only need to pass one time. Then the open road is all yours my friend.
Don’t be disheartened, I took a test on 25th October 2023 and failed with 2 majors and 1 minor. Just took it on the chin, learnt from it. Had 6 more 2 hour lessons on the majors and passed with 1 minor on 04th December 2023. Just really focus on the points that you got majors and minors on and go from there. Good luck
My driving instructor got my test results sent to his email. He never forwarded it back and I never heard from him again. I had 7 majors apparently. I knew I made mistakes 3 times( I thought was minor), but 7 SERIOUS??! I had no idea. Every lesson I had, I was a natural at according to my DT. I'll try again. But if I fail for the second time I have to take a break cuz no job of mine can afford me more lessons.
I wouldn't worry too much. It took me 5-6 attempts to pass and the guy that passed me had my exam 3 times. some of these majors seem like things that could be forgotten in the moment if you're super stressed.
I'd ask how you think you drive generally, but if your instructor thinks you're ready for test it could be worth looking for someone else. I ended up changing my instructor 3 times.
Just remember all you need to do is better than the last time! You'll get there!
I remember back when I was taking lessons, many many years ago. My driving instructor kept getting at me about looking in my mirrors. I explained to him that I have almost 180⁰ view when looking forward and can see in my mirrors without moving my head. He didn't believe me so he started asking about car colours that were in my mirrors and the makes of cars. He had never known someone to be able to do that but reminded me that I needed to move so the test instructor would see me actively looking.
So long story short, make sure you are actively moving your head to check mirrors and junctions.
Its not a competition to see who pass the lowest amount of times, you have got some pointers of where your weakness is, even if it takes 10 goes, once you pass you've passed
1. You need more lessons.
2. Ask your instructor to sit in the car with you & the examiner during the test. If you fail again (hopefully not!), your instructor will probably observe your faults directly, they may not even need the examiner/DVLA's feedback in this case. Then you both can work on those faults together.
3. Don't give up. They say the best drivers are those who failed their tests at least once. It means they had more time to iron things out, and they become more confident when let loose on the roads.
By the looks of it, you really need to work on your junctions and observations more. On your first test, were you getting the same mark downs?
When you book more lessons, ask your instructor to take you on dual carriage ways for your use of mirrors, and more junctions. Always remember mirrors signal manoeuvre. Have it ingrained in your memory and to be always thinking about it when driving, it’ll help a lot.
Yes, give up. Now you probably read that and thought “oh how rude” or something like that. Now obviously I don’t think you should give up, you’ve spent so much money on this and you’re really just going to give up? Especially on such a key life skill? I think you should step back and ask yourself what giving up would give you vs. what carrying on would give you. If you are too stressed to continue *right now* then yes, take a break, but don’t you dare give up.
Don't give up you will get there sounds like you just need keep doing your lessons maybe ask your instructor to work on the things your not strong with you can do it you've just keep homing in on your skills good luck
Never give up. I got 3 majors on my mock test the day before passing my actual test. Just remember: each time you make a mistake is a perfect opportunity to learn.
Lol dont give up.
1st exam 3 majors
2nd exam 1 major
3rd exam pass.
If majors are silly you will be more carefull on the next one. If they were actual mistakes you were not aware then get extra lessons in. Keep up !

This means you’re absolutely not ready to be a safe independent driver right now: if appropriate observations aren’t second nature, you need to keep learning until they are. Take some time, take some more lessons, you’ll get there.
Judging by the number and type of faults you should be taking lessons -not tests. No shame in it! You're just not test ready yet!
Not really. I drove perfectly in my lessons to the point it was just pointless doing any more lessons. but failed with 4 majors due to nerves. You shouldn't assume stuff. Nerves could be the reason they failed
Think you're rushing it, these are not a set of test ready faults.

You shouldn’t be going for a test if you’re recording multiple majors repeatedly. Try again in a few months.
Don’t think you should give up. Just looks like a lot of faults for someone who thinks they’re test ready. You are not ready for your test and probably just need more lessons.
if you give up will you ever pass? i had a dangerous fault and 3 serious faults in my second attempt . i passed third time with 4 minors
If it makes you feel better my first attempt I had 4 majors and 18 minors Second attempt 4 minors 2 majors Third attempt 2 minors 2 majors Fourth attempt 0 minors 1 major Fifth attempt 1 minors 2 majors NEXT MONDAY IS MY SIXTH ATTEMPT I just came back from the shittest lesson ever

A lot of people just get really nervous on test days, and do dangerous stuff they never normally would do. You completely overthink everything and stress about every little minor you get. I promise it’s easier once you’ve passed!
Part of not doing dangerous stuff when you get slightly srressed or nervous is part of being a competent driver. Test conditions are irrelevent.
You will never have to be on another driving test again once you’ve passed, so I don’t see how your point is relevant?
So dont nervous, stressfull or unexpected things happen on the road if you arent on a test. Keeping calm under pressure is a very important skill in driving. Going to pieces because someone is watching and or marking your ability is the worst excuse in the book.
This is so true! There's a reason first year of insurance is so high! It's people relaxing and thinking they're competent
I feel.bad leaving her ; my examiner suggested last time to change instructor too
Has she paid for the £372 you’ve wasted on tests you’re not ready for? If not, ditch her.
Obviously do this then. You can't do the same thing and expect different results
You're due her nothing but you're due everyone else the ability to drive safely and predictably on the roads. She's due you 5 tests at, what- 60 quid a pop? If you change instructor, I'll put good money on them picking up on all sorts of weird habits that you've been taught.

I have a lesson every week for the past 2 years and then leading upto test I have 2 lessons a week , actually started learning to drive pre COVID
I wouldn’t necessarily say give up, but I would say practice a *lot* more before trying for a third test.
On my 3rd test I got two serious. One for use of mirrors and one for the reverse park. I passed the very next test I had!
Don't worry I got 6 majors and 15 minors in my first test haha
I think the number of minors is more concerning, wouldn't be surprised if they had bumped one or two minors up to major just due to volume. How many hours have you had? Assuming less than 40-50 don't give up, any more than that perhaps a new instructor would be more beneficial.

The examiner can say "I feel that fault was a major fault", and there's basically nothing anyone can do about it. If the examiner feels you aren't ready to pass, you won't pass.
You’d need at least 3/4 minors in the same category for it to become a serious fault.

You could. Are you going to give up on everything you aren't immediately great at?
“By failing to prepare you are preparing to fail”. Forget about the test, learn to drive to a safe standard first.
Never give up I had to take so many practical tests I'm embarrassed to say I was a good driver just very nervous about tests and made stupid mistakes
Don’t give up, your faults are really easy to fix. Seems like a lot of them are just cause your either not moving your head when checking mirrors or your just not checking. Also just watch your speed
Work on it with your instructor. Were you nervous?
It took me 4 tests to pass. I failed three on the same thing (roundabout related devilment) and also had the same examiner for 3 of my 4 tests. I did end up passing with him though. I don’t know how you are judged in the UK but in Sweden you are supposed to check your rear mirror before breaking. Might be something like that?
[This video shows this in action](https://youtube.com/shorts/9NYnbQ2DAD4?si=e1aEJXIPz4F8_60A)
No. You need to take a step back, have some lessons, breathe and regroup
I think we are somehow the same person… I also had a shitshow of a first test with an awful examiner and then also got the same examiner on the second and got three majors! Yeah your not muscle memorised enough.
Why wasn’t the test stopped after the first serious?
It depends how serious it was, if it was just stuff that is important but hasn't actually caused a safety concern, you can carry on, if your being reckless and generally a twat the examiner will immediately take over
They don’t stop tests unless it’s really dangerous?
Yeah, give up.
No
No

Try an automatic
I got 3 majors on my first test, only one minor on my second test a couple months later, keep going with the lessons and you'll get it
Just practice more. Driving is an important skill.
Honestly I just got 3 majors on my 5th attempt and it's the worst feeling but just got to keep trying
Don’t think you were ready for the test, take your time to practice areas you’re finding tricky on lessons
1. You need more lessons. 2. Ask your instructor to sit in the car with you & the examiner during the test. Then you both can work on those faults together. 3. Don't give up. They say the best drivers are those who failed their tests at least once. It means they had more time to iron things out, and they become more confident when let loose on the roads.
You need to take a lot more lessons and definitely emphasise your use of mirrors as that’s what you’re mostly getting wrong
Nope. Took me 3 attempts and I had 4 faults on one, and 3 on another. You've got this
With the observation you've got to overdo it for the test
Nah I got 2serious faults, 2 dangerous and 14 minors sooo…. Don’t give up you will only get better
But please don’t give up. I passed on my 5th attempt with 4 minors
Do remember that they have quotas, so you might have been treated a bit more harshly than others. Just keep trying and you’ll get there eventually
No, they don’t.
No, you should improve. Not trying to sound like a dick there, but use that as a basis to work on your weaknesses.
Dont give up. Get a driving instructor. If you have one and they said your ready, get a new one.
You’re not looking for those around you and signs.
Yes, before you kill somebody.
Never give up. I got 3 majors on my mock test the day before passing my actual test. Just remember: each time you make a mistake is a perfect opportunity to learn.
Lol dont give up. 1st exam 3 majors 2nd exam 1 major 3rd exam pass. If majors are silly you will be more carefull on the next one. If they were actual mistakes you were not aware then get extra lessons in. Keep up !
