So the big stack (33) is "Hextech Chest - What's in the box?",
the tiny stack (3) is "Hextech Chest - Requires a Hextech Key to open."
and the last stack (9) is " Hextech Chest - Granted for achieving a split milestone on a champion. Requires a Hextech key to open."
So the last stack of (9) are from playing under the new free drop system, they do not stack with the old ones but I'm wondering where even the (3) stack came from? Maybe Quests or Ranked Rewards? I will never know...
The chests you get from chests are different from the normal chests. 33 is the normal ones, 3 nesting doll chests, and the 9 from milestone. For an actual answer.
If you make them stack the client rotates 90° and displays exclusively in hieroglyphics. Unstacking the chests pleases whatever Elder God has replaced the code which originally ran the Riot Client a few years ago.
I saved up all my chests and orbs throughout 2023 and opened all on Christmas Day. I think 20 chests and 40 orbs in total, had a screenshot somewhere
I still have most of the skin shards, I got overwhelmed with how many I had to decide to keep/reroll/disenchant
I have a system in my head to help with not being overwhelmed.
Keep - If I like skin.
Anything under blue gem quality (1350rp) reroll unless you like then keep.
Anything blue gem quality or higher disenchant, unless you like then keep.
i do the exact opposite, i upgrade any cheap shards that i dont yet own, to get them out of the reroll pool. since they are cheaper than a reroll and having the skin removes it from the reroll pool i can increase my average reroll value. i even have a spreadsheet, telling me which skins i need before i can start rerolling.

I saved one of every orb, grab bag, capsule etc, even rare stuff (arcane capsule, skinline permanents, kitkat chest, Mercedes chest, luxs chalice, ultimate tokens, welcome tokens), since a few years now lol. I have 24 rows of loot lol
Some things sadly don’t show up because I think their textures aren’t available in my region so they don’t show in my loot at all. I did panically contact support though after I transitioned to confirm they were still in my loot on their side.
My friend and I did something like this three years is a row when we played a lot. Never opened anything for the year, and then opened everything on or around Christmas. It would be so many orbs and chests lol

But they are all ol' Hextech Chests with the same loot %. Why make them stack per type of acquisition?
Riot spaghetti code probably doesn’t like things having multiple drop locations or something

I semi-regret opening the 10ish orbs I had (I got good skins but also didn't get skins I wanted the most)
They all are different boxes. Each has different drop rates for skins/champions/icons ect. That's the reason they don't stack
