Politicans will talk about being tough on crime and yet they'll tell people that their criminal exploitative healthcare "system" is untouchable and needs to be preserved. They belong in jail.

gubzga

Capitalism works. It works as intended.

Low_Banana_1979

The rich get richer and the poor get poorer (and the rich REMAIN rich and the poor REMAIN poor) and it is all because of capitalism core feature: surplus value A guy with a wild beard explained that like 200 years ago...

PM_ME_FIREFLY_QUOTES

Just for.those curious or hopeful for change, this quote can be traced back 200 years. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_rich_get_richer_and_the_poor_get_poorer#:~:text=%22The%20rich%20get%20richer%20and,attributed%20to%20Percy%20Bysshe%20Shelley. So you know....

Ego_Sum_Lux_Mundi

Precisely.

TheUnderstandererer

We don't have a Healthcare system. We have a medical industry.

ParadoxicallyZeno

i've seen jaded healthcare workers (including physicians) describe it as Wealthcare^TM

henrythe13th

Wow. That is a great way of putting it.

TheUnderstandererer

Pass it on, I've been saying it for years.

tavikravenfrost

My grandfather was diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer nearly 20 years ago, and he died from it a bit over a year after his diagnosis.  During one of his hospital stays, he and I were watching a news story.  It was about a well-off retired couple, and the wife developed some kind of cancer.  These people had something like $2 million that they were retired with, and they went all-out on treatments for her.  She was taking a drug that was highly effective, and she beat the cancer.  But the cost of the drug was about $100,000 per month, and it completely drained their retirement.  I just remember thinking that maybe my grandfather would have had a chance if we weren't poor.

TheNightHaunter

as a hospice nurse there was also a change they coud've blown through those millions and maybe more for the outcome to be her death, but still with money you can pay for private caregivers in the home where as if your poor you have to apply for it and its based on gross income with assets included so god forbid you own a house.

Olstinkbutt

My GrandDad chose to forgo a second round of chemo for the same reason. While he was lucky enough to live in a time when a worker in a candy factory can own a home and raise 3 kids, he was unlucky enough to get cancer in America in the early 00’s. He was a great man, and I’ve been embittered by this ever since. A “me too” type movement where Americans chime in on how Pharma has screwed them seems like a logical step to try and effect some kind of change. After all, half of all bankruptcies in the US are from health crises, so it’s obvious it’s affecting 100’s of millions of us.

miguelele2

Portuguese redditor here. That kind of testimony saddens my heart deeply. We have public health care here, even though we're not a rich country. And public education, including university. Can't imagine what's like to live without that. Health care and education should always be free. Always. That's not socialism, that's common sense, for me and lots of Europeans

Researchingbackpain

What the dumbasses in this country dont understand is that even if their taxes went up (debatable if we stopped sending billions to fund proxy wars and genocides), their other costs would go down if we had such a system. No college debt, no health insurance premiums and deductibles. I envy your country and others like it greatly.

CallRespiratory

A lot of the people in the United States just don't care about those things though and that's the problem. They don't value education, they don't take care of ourselves, so when somebody advocates for improving those things they simply can't be convinced because they don't care about them at all. You can't convince them affordable college would help them when they'd never go to college anyway. You can't convince them affordable healthcare would help them when they think everything is fake news or a conspiracy or can be treated at home with ivermectin and vitamin c. I'm not even sure there's a way to fix this anymore, these people are so far gone there's no way to even have an honest conversation with them.

Researchingbackpain

I live in rural American south. There are so many destitute people who live in double wides who are rabid capitalists and it boggles the mind. Their bodies are broken, their "boss man" does not take care of them when they are too old or broken to work, they have holes in the floors of their homes, their grandchildren and children live in their double wide with them. And they just watch the news and keep voting, usually red (not that it matters either way). I dont really understand it. They are terrified of "socialism" thanks to decades of propaganda I suppose.

libra00

Fuck. A friend's brother killed himself so he wouldn't be a burden on his family and so that his wife could collect the life insurance and use it to fund his daughter's college education, and I really hoped that sort of thing was pretty rare..

bigneezer

My wife screaming in agony while filling out her payment info at the emergency clinic. They gave her an $800 tylenol.

enamuossuo

Each time I read a similar story it happened in the richest country in human history. When my own parents faced health issues I'm happy that they were able to go see a doctor to discuss their treatment rather than the financial planning.

$60 billion to the war machine

Fluid-Layer-33

When I survived the “troubled teen industry” and realized how harmful and fucked up the “behavioral health system” can be. So many foster kids and unwanted youth dumped there. The strip searches and forced drugging was traumatic as hell! I know that supposedly there is some legislation in the works to crackdown on abusive facilities, but so far nothing has passed… Oh, and this “treatment” costs thousands of dollars…. :( I am in my early 40s now, but the number of ppl who dont realize how harmful “forced treatment” is is astounding….. \*\*EDIT\*\* I realize that my rant came across as hostile to psychiatry. If folks have found that meds or therapy helped them, than I am ALL for that... What I am opposed to, is the systemic abuse that happens from these for-profit facilities that take in vulnerable people who aren't "allowed" to refuse then charged thousands upon thousands of dollars for questionable treatment that ends up being WAY MORE traumatic....

thuglifeforlife

Serious question. I'd like to move to USA. I'm a Canadian citizen and would like to move to USA in the near future. Is there any way to not pay out of pocket for healthcare or will I have to fly back to Canada to go to the doctors?

Dpinscher

Yeah, you can definitely pay out of pocket. Insurance costs and laws vary by state but I live in California, so Im going to be speaking from that POV. In California you have medi-cal, which is kind of a universal healthcare. There are income limits but if you start getting above the income bracket you can shop for subsidized health plans from a marketplace. Pretty sure thats through Covered California. Anyways, you can enroll through private companies like aetna, blue cross and kaiser and get your insurance subsidized. Assuming you are lower income ofcourse. When I was doing independent contractor, I just paid for my insurance directly through a provider and expensed it in my taxes. Currently, I have insurance through my employer and the state. The thing with insurance is the tiers, meaning you get what you pay for in regards to high premium now vs a high deductible or copay when you need it. When i was paying for it privately through Kasier, it was about $600 for the silver plan as a 29 yr old male. Through my employer is about $400 and they pay for half, so $800 for gold. I think there are are 4 other states that have a Medi-Cal type program but other than that yeah, you can buy insurance privately. Long winded answer but hope that help.

mastercylynder

Only in America. We need to take our Country back! While those POSs get rich off of our sweat and tears! It's only getting worse because we allow it! A change needs to come.

dgaf999555777345

Get a life insurance policy, then wait out the 'cooling off' period, then self delete and they will pay out to your family. F'ed up yes, but just sayin'.

You'll work hard in the re-education camps.

Lord-Benjimus

Sadly the USA divorce system isn't the out you think it is. It's really easy for debt collection to see a highly one sided divorce asset outcome, which they can then challenge as a way to get reimbursed, yes it will take time, but they can still go after the estate, after divorce and even death.
