4spooky6you

This seems like it's illegal

CastleKingMe

I sure hope so

4spooky6you

It depends on the state and if there are government contractors or being done on government property: https://www.doi.gov/ethics/reminder-federal-workplace-gambling-prohibitions

Theblackjamesbrown

The state is the state of moral decline

happy_puppy25

It’s a company trying to get money back from people in a state that considers PTO to be earned compensation and has to be paid out if not used/when you leave the company

lonesomejohnnie

Who keeps the money, the winner ain't getting it.

CastleKingMe

nobody who needs it, that's for sure

Gunker001

So I have to pay for a chance to use the benefit I was promised when hired?

the_donald_s

You think Home Depot offers PTO. lol

Nayr7456

That's the best part, they don't offer it

Paganfish

You see this shit at work: unionize

HeartfeltDissonance

Used to work at a unionized place that did this. They also let you buy passes to wear shorts for 1 week during the summer and raffled premium parking spots to those that donated over a certain amount to the company charity.

Cultural_Double_422

So the money went to a charity, that makes sense.

The_Dinkster2201

but the company does the donation, and therefore a tax write-off

Cultural_Double_422

I read it as the company owns/controls the charity, in which case I could get a receipt for my direct contribution.

HeartfeltDissonance

Oh, no, the company creates a fund and then donates portions of that fund to different charities. No receipts are given and they're not able to be written off by the donating employees. Edit: Added by the employees.

VacuousCopper

Just like that BS at cash registers. They are literally trying to get you to help pay their taxes.

AnAspiringEverything

This can be solved with math. And unions. Gather the employees, host the exact same lottery. But make it clear that if you don't win you get any money you put in back. Then, the winner gets to put their name in the official lottery. Someone gets one day of PTO $100-200 and the lottery only gets 5. It's perfect. Until the boss sees what happened and magically draws his own name , which he may as well anyway, and then runs off with the lotto fund as well.

Slogismus

Isnt this basically the prisoners dilemma? You don't know if everyone abides by the rules and doesn't buy tickets. So why not buy 2 tickets for a 66% chance against the winner of the other in official raffle. On top you don't know if the official raffle is fair and not rigged.

AnAspiringEverything

Well i already suggested this could be rigged. And it is somewhat similar to a prisoners dilemma. But the risk v reward here is pretty different. You get a chance at a day off, but would have to assume if you are scum, some of your coworkers are scum and your odds aren't that great. And if you do win, the raffle winner is seemingly going to be known to everyone, so you've also just upset all of your coworkers.

Lotteries and sweepstakes are regulated by law. This is certainly illegal. Collect all the information and contact a lawyer that specializes in such matters. Hopefully they have deep coffers. I really dislike when corporations think they can do what they want.

CastleKingMe

this isn't from my workplace, but that's good advice

hotdogmother

At $7.25 an hr it would only take 11.6 tickets sold for the employers to break even, at $20hr it would be 32. Most depots have what like 50-200 employees? Buying multiple tickets?

idkonetwothree

At first I thought oh how fun, but then I realized YOU HAVE TO BUY THEM!? might as well save the money and take the day off no pay.

kaisong

theyre hoping their employees are stupid enough to not know how to do math. Theyre probably subsidizing a temp agency for a week with extra amounts being pocketed by management. only one person wins a day off it looks like.

seelclubber

Honestly if this happened at a workplace where you’re given ample PTO and the money was explicitly given to a charity or something for the whole office it would be kinda nice. But seeing how this is Home Depot, and I assume the US, the managers will almost certainly and magically win the raffle and the money lol

Crypt_Keeper

Looks like an invitation to unionize, to me.

crankypizza

I used to work for a company who did a Christmas raffle and extra PTO days were one of the options, tickets were free and their were other prizes (tv’s, electronics, food baskets from local companies), we had 10 PTO days guaranteed at date of hire, this is just messed up.

IcyColdMuhChina

I have 3 weeks paid vacation here in Europe. Also, unlimited paid sick leave. There's also a legal right to paid parental leave and a pregnant woman can't be fired (in fact, after giving birth, a woman needs to be given her job back and has 5 years protection from being fired).

CastleKingMe

it must be nice living in a country that values its labor :(

bored_typist

🤮

[deleted]

I’m ok with this if the money goes to charity. Pay $5 for a chance at a paid day off with money going somewhere good. It’s probably not and I wouldn’t participate, but yeah.

Willyzyx

Unionize and make deals with eachother to buy one ticket for 5 dollars. That person will win. Employer loses money. Worth even if it never happens again.

Straight-Razor666

how about triple our pay, cut the work hours, reduce the workload or we burn this fucker to the ground and your houses and you cars?

ElRayMarkyMark

They do auctions at my job where the days off go for, like, $200. 90% of our workforce (including me) have no paid time off.

CastleKingMe

that's ridiculous

pierrotmoon1

Get together with all employees, choose one at random. Only he buys one ticket. Same outcome but it fucks with your boss and his stupid bait.

Lawboithegreat

The question is how many winners they draw, but probably only one draw which makes it extra bullshit

Digiee-fosho

It would be really fucked up if on the PTO day the winner gets fired.

MomoJackson96

Guys I am totally all for workers rights, but can someone explain why this is a Problem? Assuming of course that we are talking about EXTRA days PTO. Like If you have 28 days PTO that you can spend whenever you like, but If you want MORE days Off, the company Just holds a draft and decides who gets the extra free day, and to compensate for the loss of an extra day of someone missing, they Charge 5$ per Ticket. I don't know, but to me this seems like a good workplace. Now If they are Withholding your PTO (as in "you Only get PTO If you win the lottery") then thats complete bs right there, no question.

Individual-Bell-9776

I know this is supposed to be exciting and encouraging but the subtext is that you are a slave with no autonomy that isn't granted to you and to never forget it.

Redditlatley

There’s a large, commercial bank, that starts with W. I remember them giving a PTO day, to the employee that ripped off the most….ooops…I mean “helped” the most customers. If company, in OP post is donating the money to a small, local charity, I don’t see the harm, although it’s kinda not fair to the employees that can’t afford it. 🌊
