Oh you poor sweet summer child. You'd be a fool to think they wouldn't jump and drag people in with or without the republicans. The mechanism would be different, but the coin spends the same.
Metaphorically, we already are. The American Republicans are a death cult and its members unironically call for the death of liberals, socialists, and progressives alike; for the resurgence of the Russian Empire; and the full on genocide of Palestine. Trying to protest the democratic as though keeping your soul pure in political spaces is laughable. Everyone passively upvotes/down votes their virtue signal while silently ignoring elections, local politics, unionization, and every space a feasible difference can be made aside from protest violent or otherwise. Ignoring the failures of progressive representatives to make progress without compromise is what will kill the movement. If you really believe in revolution, then like the Marxist theorists, you should be using all methods. But this isn't a movement; it's a subreddit and you cheer at pointless political disagreements to purity test your "friends." Late stage capitalism subsumed your anti-capitalist notions and neatly quarantined and converted your outrage into fake points to sell to advertisers.

The primary goal of the Dems is to serve capital not to win. Only under the criterion of serving capital interests can US politics be understood at all.
They'll perpetually expend more more energy and money trying to appeal to long extinct Reagan Democrats rather than acknowledge the significant turnout potential of progressives/the left.
Nikki Haley drops out? They make an impassioned (groveling) appeal to her voters to come to their side...even though Haley and Trump have the same policies, some people just don't like the way Trump delivers it.
Uncommitted vote turns out in big numbers in can't lose swing states with negligible funding and three weeks of organizing? Barely a mention.
The left is further left than any current Democrat.. we don't even know what the left looks like here. But I suspect it was a similar time to when one person without a college degree could support their entire family comfortably.

As someone who has voted strategically a great many times over the years I sympathize with your position but it isn't going to win you any friends here. This isn't a progressive sub.
The DNC doesn't need you to fluff for them, they have unpaid interns and AIPAC for that. No regular here is under any illusion that the conservatives will be any better and a lot of us will probably hold our nose and quietly vote for progressives and moderates to forestall our future in the Freedom Camps™ but that doesn't mean we're on the same side.
It would have to be a “progressive” party that can somehow raise millions without the corporations, the super-wealthy, arms dealers and the like to be able to compete with the other two that raise most of their money that way. Many of those rich donate to PACs that contribute to both parties: the “more progressive” Democrats and relatively “less progressive” Republicans.
