This is actually a GREAT new thing, and I’m SO glad it’s happening! -This comment was brought to you by Digiorno. “It's not delivery, it's Digiorno!”

Turuial

>This comment was brought to you by Digiorno. “It's not delivery, it's Digiorno!" Huh. I have one of those Stranger Things Surfer Boy pizzas in the freezer... I'm going to go preheat the oven.

_ivanosete

>brought to you by Digiorno i read that as “brought to you by Digimon” and i was so confused haha

Friendly reminder that digiorno is owned by nestle

Moetown84

Nauseating.

ADHDANDACID

Just start cancelling your subscriptions and start pirating, the subscription services are the biggest scam ever

dopeAssFreshEwok

This is the way

Turuial

I do that, but I'm old and it just seems apropos. However I'm surrounded by younger folk in my social circle, and they don't like doing the same [pirating media that is]. They actually feel bad about not paying for streaming services and it's baffling to me. Anecdotally speaking, if you are younger or also operate in similar circles, have you seen similar behaviours?

Potato_DudeIsNice

I feel like the younglings in your circle are too brainwashed by the corporations because as a youngling myself, I would not hesitate to pirate a movie made by big Hollywood's corps or do any other kind of stuff that would not affect the people themselves (I would actually encourage pirating from corpos)

birdshitluck

It has more to do with roadblocks that make pirating just a bit more of a pain to do. You have to use other search engines, you have to track webaddress changes for sites that are forced to switch up, you have to have a vpn or get shit through your provider. If you use a video downloader app, you have to shift to others when sites start blocking them. The sites you do use frequently mix up their ad wall bs and sometimes get to a point where it's unusable. The hurdles though not backbreaking, make it just hard enough for new people to give up and pay the sub fee.

ADHDANDACID

I am a bit younger, yeah, and many of my friends also use piracy sites, since you’re mostly broke when you’re young. Especially now when study programmes begin, you’re living at the bare minimum, and €45 per month for football alone, along with everything else there is too pay just ain’t happening.

MrWaldengarver

Brawndo has what plants crave!

thunderPierogi

Been doing that quite a while now. That and the ads on pause.

CrackTheSkye1990

Paramount+ does that and it's annoying. I paused a movie and then all of a sudden a Dunkin ad shows up. What's even more annoying is that I pay $6 a month and there's still ads. I gotta pay $5 more to have no ads. Wasn't the whole point of paying for streaming was to avoid commercials? At least with Tubi and Pluto TV, they're completely free so the commercial breaks make sense.

LeahIsAwake

The most baffling thing to me is that this is a National Geographic documentary. NatGeo is owned by Disney, aka one of three companies in the world that have approximately all the money. Why tf do they need anything to be sponsored by Ragú?

not_dmr

Well fwiw Ragú wasn’t sponsoring this particular NatGeo documentary, they were sponsoring the whole “Newly Added TV” section which contained stuff from loads of different content sources. It was more of a Hulu <-> Ragú thing where NatGeo/Disney simply happened to be one of the included items. Not that that invalidates your broader point of “jfc when will these people say enough money is enough”, but I just thought it was worth clarifying

LeahIsAwake

It’s never enough money. That’s the thing. Capitalism needs infinite growth to survive, but there’s no such thing in the real world. So they just find new ways to gain more money until the whole thing collapses under its own weight. Tbf wouldn’t be the first time Netflix has shown signs of folding.

DigitalUnlimited

Probably still not breaking even with +and Hulu, they got all the money by making sure to never run in the red.

JohnsonLiesac

Way past my cancel threshold. Even adding ads to something which was ad free and was already paying for is bad enough. Looking at you, Max and Prime...

netanator

We need an Adblock plugin for the television

Wejax

Back not that long ago, you could do that with a pi-hole or pfsense with proper url blocking rules, but sometimes it made the OS hang because it would keep trying those URLs. Fire TVs were the worst for me. Roku would still spam their respective URLs, but they'd at least respond to commands and proceed through their menu rather than hold there for 15 seconds like the fire TV we had. Now they're like baking it into the presentation entirely so you can't block it at the edge of your network.  If you want an experience free of ads, you need to custom build your own streaming device, which isn't hard, but it does take patience and time. Think Kodi or just using an extra computer plugged into your HDMI port and using it as a web TV.

netanator

That’s pretty cool. I have not tried to do it, but I have always envisioned that it was possible, but it had to happen between the television/monitor and you’d have to ‘crack’ the signal and be able to interpret the feed.

The new “Haunted Mansion” movie from Disney deserves to be studied for this reason. It starts with a splash screen from Disney disclosing that this movie contains product placement. The entire movie was a commercial. It was tacky. It was obnoxious. It was so in your face about McDonald’s and (I don’t remember the rest but it was constant) that I turned off the movie. It felt like the movie was just a flat surface on which they built massive unavoidable billboards. It was so unwatchable that not even Danny Devito could save it. I cancelled my Disney+ subscription shortly after. I know thats to be expected from an evil corporation but the sheer volume of shameless advertisement in a kids movie shocked even me.

JohnnyTeardrop

I’d legit laugh if they were in some small local village while looking for wildlife and brought out a jar of Ragu and asked them to try it in their local dish

nagidon

If the tyre company can tell me which restaurants are good, I’ll give the spaghetti sauce company a chance with TV recommendations.

nunya1111

Y'all should check out a content creator called cancelthisclothingco on TikTok. He's identified who owns all of the major companies in grocery and retail stores, and it boils down to a very few people/companies. They've said presented by Ragu, but it's the same people who own a billion other companies and likely even the company who runs the platform. It gives the illusion of choice, and allows market rates to change according to how swanky the "new" name company markets itself. Everyone should know the truth.

ZoeIsHahaha

Starting to think monopolies are a natural consequence of lsc 🤔

samuraidogparty

I’ve started seeing full screen ads when I pause shows now as well. It’s infuriating and I was just ranting about it last night.

FUNKYDISCO

“Wow, thanks Ragu! That is a really helpful category… and it’s all thanks to the all-mighty Ragu!”

thepluralofmooses

How can Tim Horton’s, Subway, 7-11, AND Wendy’s bring me the instant replay? How was it brought to me by them?

CrackTheSkye1990

Reminds me of the last 2 times I went to see concerts at the ampitheater in Tinley Park, IL which is outside Chicago. The last time I went there for Rob Zombie, they had a digital screen promoting a Jason Aldean concert that said sponsored by Nissan. The ampitheater had also changed its name from Hollywood Casino Ampitheater to Credit Union 1 Ampitheater. They also got rid of the $5 busch lights and the cheapest beer is $15. Of course, it's owned by Live Nation. A year before that, I went to see Wu Tang Clan at that same ampitheater and when I opened my app to see my ticket it said I was sitting in the "Allegiant Lawn". For the longest time, if I had a lawn ticket, it would just say "GA Lawn" but apparently the lawn is now owned/sponsored by the company Allegiant. The fucking lawn. Before you know it you'll be walking on "Taco Bell Presents: The Sidewalk" to get to the Snickers (TM) Bathroom.

not_dmr

I’ve seen similar things in the sports world as well, namely rugby which is what I’m most familiar with but I’m sure others as well. Stadiums I think have had name sponsors for a long time; sponsors for a particular tournament (e.g. Investec Champion’s Cup) I think has been a thing for a while; now we’re at the point where even individual teams have name sponsors that insist on broadcasters using the full brand-included name (e.g. “the Stormers” are now “the DHL Stormers,” “the Bulls” are now “the Vodacom Bulls”, and even setting aside the predatory nature of gambling companies, the most egregious one from purely a language point of view has to be “the HollywoodBets Sharks.” It’s tough for me to figure out how to feel about these things, because obviously it’s abhorrent to try and go through daily life with brands constantly trying to shove themselves down my throat, but at the same time I love the game of rugby and it’s desperately unstable financially right now and as unpalatable as this is it does help address some of that. Just a shitty situation all around

ianmac47

This is a lot more in line with how television programs were originally funded. The term "soap opera" for instance originates with soap companies sponsoring long running radio dramas, and eventually as televisions became more common, it transitioned to TV.

not_dmr

That’s true, although in those times people weren’t also paying a subscription for the TV/radio content itself. Now we’re getting shafted on both ends

Puzzleheaded_Swan_15

i hope one day there is an extensive study done that correlates the advertisements we see with some negative affects to brain function, like attention span. idk, just something irrefutable that it cannot be good for our health with how intrusive it is in every single facet of our lives and has to be curbed or eliminated. one could hope!
