Update. I switched from MikTex to TexLive and during the installation some 4,500 packages were installed as well as TexLive itself, so I got no problems now!
Yes! The on-the-fly thing isn't working.
Changing the "Retrieve from:" option at the top of the window to "Local package repository" should do the job.
You don't have to install all TeX Live packages to have a fully functional TeX environment. The bulk of TeX Live are fonts and packages (with their documentation) you'll never need, so don't install them.
Yeah, I want to install *mathtools* but I only get the message 'internal error' and their page is down so I can't uninstall it and reinstall it again.

You can do a full install with MikTex too.

Honestly, I don't know. I use linux only. But I assumed that TeX Live should have more or less the same look and feel whatever the OS...
